This is Children’s Piece No. 4 by Chick Corea, a noted jazz pianist who passed away on Tuesday from a rare and undetected form of cancer. He was doing a lot of publishing during the pandemic, helping to inspire thousands or maybe millions of musicians all over the world. He was one of the greatest jazz pianists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain (180 gram, Sony BMG, 2015) One of my favourite Miles Davis records. Sketches of Spain is such an evocative body of work. In typical Davis fashion it pushed boundaries, because Sketches wasn’t and isn’t a pure Jazz record. Gil Evans and Davis fused the musical movement known as Third Stream and Orchestral Jazz to explore a whole new genre of music. Some critics were not impressed. One wrote: “the recording is something of a curiosity and a failure”. The composer Joaquin Rodrigo (who wrote Concierto de Aranjuez, which takes up almost side 1 of the LP) was also not impressed, however Evans noted that the inclusion of Rodrigo’s piece on Sketches made the Spanish composer “a lot of money” from the royalties that came his way. On the whole Sketches of Spain was lauded and praised, winning Davis and Evans a grammy in 1961. in 2003 the album was ranked 358th on Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time.

For me it’s just a beautiful record.

Though primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists—playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz—Mulligan was also a significant arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. His pianoless quartet of the early 1950s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz groups. Mulligan was also a skilled pianist and played several other reed instruments. Moondog "The Viking of Sixth Avenue" 2xLP. I've got a handful of recent listens from the past month to catch up on! This is what I'm enjoying right now though. Moondog really nails minimalism in my opinion. Complex music that sounds simple. Occasionally so catchy a song of his will haunt your mind for days. Neil Ardley – Kaleidoscope Of Rainbows

Whenever modern jazz lovers got together to discuss the albums they’d most love to see reissued, Neil Ardley’s Kaleidoscope of Rainbows was seldom far from someone’s mind. Originally released in 1976 and promptly proclaimed a landmark of British jazz-rock (Melody Maker termed it “one of the great musical achievements of our age”), Kaleidoscope of Rainbows drew in contributions from Ian Carr, Tony Coe, Dave MacRae, and Barbara Thompson, the very cream of what was then an astonishingly vibrant jazz scene, and it was as beautiful as its ingredients demanded. This reissue was timed to coincide with a memorial service for Ardley following the composer’s death in February 2004 and, while it packs nothing in the way of bonus tracks, the remastering of its seven original tracks opens the entire album up to new appreciation. Sandwiched by the twin epics “Prologue/Rainbow One” and “Rainbow Seven” (all the tracks are numerically titled variations), the music wanders from gentle melody and rhythm to some startling wind passages, with “Rainbow Three” toying with rock passages, “Rainbow Five” nodding towards tribal percussives, and “Rainbow Six” tinkling with almost pastoral serenity. Certainly there are few albums that can offer so much variety within one single, well-defined framework; and, with Kaleidoscope of Rainbows appearing as monumental today as it did upon its original release, the accolades that accompanied it can only be restated too.
