"CHARACTERS - DAY TWO: Kieran (Technically this is an addendum to yesterday, but I make the rules here so nyah!) Heading into DAI, I had a bite-sized problem on my hands. I knew Morrigan would feature. I also knew we were importing previous choices. So now I had to contend with: the Old God Baby. Here's the thing about honouring previous game choices, from a design perspective: it's a sucker's game. What many fans picture, when you mention it, is divergent *plot* -- the story changes path based on those major choices. How exciting! But you will never be able to deliver divergent plot. You can deliver flavour differences (usually in the form of divergent dialogue), character swaps (character X appears instead of Y), and extra content (such as a side quest) -- but plot branching, particularly the critical path? It's a question of resources, and there's never enough to go around. "Here Lies the Abyss" in DAI was about as good as it gets, and even that was a far cry from how I originally pictured it (hello last-minute insert of Stroud when a DAO Warden import got cut). The Old God Baby was one of the main choices from DAO -- Morrigan has a baby? With the Archdemon's soul?! Most DAO players who flagged that choice surely expected *monumental* consequences. World-shaking consequences! And we talked about it. We did. There were, like, three different designs of the DAI ending where OGB Kieran could cause complete divergence: new path, cutscenes, the whole nine yards. But it wasn't going to happen. It was a decision from *two games ago* that only a small minority (hello telemetry) would even choose. To the rest, they probably neither knew about it nor cared... so how many resources could you invest? To do what? Set up an even bigger divergence for the NEXT game? The other writers acknowledged my anxiety with a grim nod every time it came up, but they had no solutions. Finally, I realized there WAS a solution, and that was changing how I thought about the choice: don't make it about Kieran. The players don't know him, never have. Make it about Morrigan. Thus began a feverish three days where I wrote probably the most complicated scene of my career: Morrigan's reckoning with Flemeth in DAI and the fallout after. Three different versions (OGB Kieran, non-OGB Kieran, and no Kieran), each with branching for other choices (like the Well of Sorrows). I did it all at once. There was no other way to wrap my head around the complexity of it. It was also a tough sell to the team, considering the amount of cinematics work, but they agreed we had to do *something*. And still it felt... underwhelming, insofar as divergence goes. But it was also good. I remember when I first spoke with Claudia, about how this was Morrigan's story. This was about how motherhood had changed her, how she'd grown up. Claudia got a bit teary-eyed. It was a journey she was familiar with, she said. Her first son, Odin, had been born in 2005 not long after DAO came out. And, man, she killed with that performance! Kate, too, but I'll get to her later. Claudia dug down, and that scene where Morrigan tells Flemeth she'll never be the mother Flemeth was to her? That came from someplace very raw. It was devastating to witness in the booth. There were tears all around. Not long after, Claudia called and asked if maybe - just maybe - Odin could play Kieran? He was a bit young (not yet 5, then), but it felt... right? We agreed. Claudia was in the booth, gently coaching him through his lines, and I think that was the first moment I felt I'd done the right thing."

Sadly, it's also cinematics. Art time for all those reappearing characters you probably want to look *just* right. And let's not forget we have to test all those permutations! User: "I’m actually shocked so little people chose the dark ritual. That was basically the main reason Flemeth sent Morrigan with the wardens, no?" David Gaider: "The impression you get of what "most" players do - in almost any game, not just DA - is very different if you're online a lot. Consider here that it's not just the % of DAO players who chose the Dark Ritual, it's the % of DAI players WHO PLAYED DAO and cared to import that choice 5 years later." [source]

User: "Is there anything you wish you had done differently, in hindsight?" David Gaider: "Probably just to not ever do importing choices between games in the first place." [source]

I wasn't expecting to be devastated by those scenes 😭 I guess when we complain about lack of consequences from prev choices in DAV we must also ask how MUCH are we willing to pay for those branches to exist?" David Gaider: "That's indeed it. Content directed towards reactivity would have to come from somewhere else. So essentially a shorter game overall for the sake of those hardcore fans who'd import - who would, I imagine, REALLY enjoy that... but it's a tough cost/benefit analysis to make." [source]

User: "Genuine question, not a critique - but what made the OGB decision one that couldn't be handwaved as canon no matter what was or wasn't chosen? Leliana and Flemeth being around no matter what come to mind. Was OGB simultaneously too major and too minor of a decision?" David Gaider: "Flemeth and Leliana being alive were easily explainable, and we knew we were doing it even back then. Circumventing the Dark Ritual… that would be too cheap. We did talk about it, but it just felt too dishonest. Too high a price for what we’d get in return." [source]

David Gaider: "We could maybe have gotten past the need to "reconstruct" the Warden, much like the Inquisitor was reconstructed in DATV (so I understand), but the need to give the Warden a voice was the final nail. Too potentially disappointing for the very people who'd be excited about it, aside from the cost." [source]

two years ago, i mentioned how i’ll be adding stuff to the devil timeline universe lol. this is part of that (sort of) and it is the type of cpn that will make so/os and other cpfs roll their eyes. but if you are into galaxy brain cpns & fake stuff then this is for you.

anyway, this is about the movie Crystal Sky of Yesterday. one of the characters (Qi Jingxuan) was voiced/dubbed by WYB. the film is uploaded here with english subs if you are interested.

story about dreams, friendship, family and first love in their youthful days. Tu Xiaoyi, Yao Zhetian and Qi Jingxuan are high school students in a small town, Lanxi, in southern China. This is a story about dreams, friendship, family and first love in their youthful days. ☁️

it’s a coming of age story, the characters are about to take the gaokao and are thinking about what they want to be when they grow up. tu xiaoyi meets the infamous qi jing xuan and they form a friendship that will stay with both of them for years to come.

i will be mentioning some similarities and why this is a queer film and the last part is the fanfiction aspect. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

the movie starts with Tu Xiaoyi in the year 2018 ( tho the majority of the film is in 1999 when they were in high school ) , all grown up and back in his hometown of Lanxi. he resigned from his job as a manga artist because he wants to pursue making his own story. looking at the character with the glasses and the fact that he is an artist immediately reminds us of XZ.

and it’s common knowledge that XZ has his own company with his friends ( design studio ) before he decided to enter the entertainment industry. so he had a similar story of sorts, working at an office then branching out on his own. you can also say that him leaving his “job” to become a “singer” is the same thing that the character is doing. he is following his dreams.

2018 was also the year they became closer— working on the Untamed together. A reunion of sorts. so that year being mentioned in the movie as when the MC goes back is an interesting coincidence. The source material for this was serialized in 2011 ( when WYB joined the circle ) & movie started production 2015 ( when XZ entered the circle ) 👀👀👀

The MC also likes to draw blue sky and white clouds + paper planes. two things that are a symbol in the bjyx fandom. not because we made up the connection, it was there. they both showed it to us so the cpn was so easy to make.

Qi Jingxian is someone who dreams of becoming a pilot. At some point, WYB said he wants to become a pilot ( during TTXS and tbh he can do anything he wants lol ). He starred in a film where he is a pilot too, Lei Yu in Born to Fly.

During the promo of the film, WYB posted on Douyin. It’s his photo as a kid and the transitions to him as Lei Yu. Idk if this is a direct way of him saying he dreamed of being a pilot, and now he technically gets to be one but the implication is v strong.

coincidence too that in the movie, QJX mentioned that his parents said he wanted to be a pilot and he had a photo. the photo is kinda like WYB’s.

it’s hilarious to me how WYB’s character is so like him. there is a sort of love triangle here cause the MC ( Tu Xiaoyi ) likes a girl. Qi Jingxian who views MC as a good friend knows this and helps him out in his own way. However the girl likes Qi Jingxian who is not even thinking about romance lol. He just wants to become a pilot and get away. 😂😂😂😂 the MC saw them talking tho and sort of holding each other so he went on angst mode. this brought some distance between him and QJX too.

years later, the MC is making a manga about their childhood and the panel shown is him with Qi Jingxian. Not the girl. 🤡🤡🤡🤡 the main page of the manga too — notice how prominent Qi Jingxian is?

the “reveal” part of this movie is giving some serious 🏳️‍🌈! i don’t know how anyone can miss it. earlier in the film , the girl gives the MC a “magazine” and inside it says “try your best.” It’s because of this that he finally decides to make mangas. but it was revealed that Qi Jingxian asked the girl to give it to MC. to make it seem like it was from her 😭😭😭

Right then I knew, from that moment i knew, the magazine Qi Jing Xian gave me opened the way for me to go make mangas in Shenzhen. I think if that summer would have been longer, maybe i would have said “see you”. If at that moment i said “i will see you” then would it have been possible to see each other again?

it’s so freakin sad 🥹🥹🥹

and the mention of that “summer”. the time he spent with his friends, but most of all Qi Jing Xian and how he wishes it was longer. ugh. it’s like the summer when CQL was filmed.

the film ends with the manga being published and a pilot picking it up from a store. this is Qi Jing Xian who made his dream come true. then his voice is played, when they were young, he was teaching the MC to play a game and in return MC must write a manga about them. and he did. it’s an open ending of sorts. they both became what they promised to be when they were young. as a viewer, we hope that they will reunite.

on a more serious note, an important message in the film is: “Whatever you do, I just want you to move forward. Try your best. Jiayou!”

this is something that the two of them always say. or a form of it. that when you find something you like, work hard for it. and that if you find someone special to you, you will shine for them. you tend to become a better version of yourself.

during the promotion of the film, we got some clues too:

p1 when they posted about the release date the kadian is 38 which is zhan bo. p2 is yibo’s weibo post for the film and the first one is the photo of the MC. the rest is his character. the caption is literally i hope you can meet qi jing xian in your youth, but the first one got cropped to show the MC and the whole photo is QJX and the MC. the kadian also, i will love you forever.

the production team weirdly enough, posted with reference to XZ. because he worked with both productions.

the official weibo of the movie was also leaning towards the whole 🏳️‍🌈 support cause they shared fanarts of the TXY x QJX pairing. Also the way the tag “QJX likes TXY” was popular. 👨‍❤️‍💋‍👨

so now we have come to the fanfiction part and why this could be part of the devil timeline. the question is why was WYB so passionate about this project. he was finalizing this in 2018 as well, along with the other hundreds of things he was doing that time. was there a personal connection? probably. they might have known each other before and have communicated — which is the whole premise of devil timeline. XZ liked the manga and recommended it to Bobo and that’s why he took the project. Maybe they both loved the message of it and chasing your dreams. Maybe they both understood what was really going on between the two male leads too. ✌🏼

The Kid at the Back (Visual Novel)

Genre: Thriller/Romance

The Kid at the Back is very cool looking and technically well done. I love all the character designs made in this one and Sol himself is pretty interesting at least that's what it sets itself up to be. All routes lead to the same ending though which is r18 considering that we basically see him jacking off to the main character's voice.

The story starts out with Darling Quinn finishing class. One of their classmates, Brittney tries to get them to join them for lunch together while the class representative, Crowe Ichabod comes in to defend Darling from her. Darling can then choose to go with Brittney to the cafeteria, go to the library or go to the rooftop.

Choosing to go to the cafeteria with Britney will lead to meeting a couple of other characters: Jess, a shy girl who follows Britney around, Deryl the friendly jock and Geo, the quiet cool kid. If the player has their own lunch, they will sit down and talk to Geo and Deryl for a bit as they have their playful banter while going with Britney will have a conversation with Crowe. In the end though, Britney's outfit is ruined by another girl who seems to have beef with her, before the entire cafeteria gets thrown into a food fight. In the end, Darling gets hit in the head with one of the trays causing them to pass out and end up in the infirmary. Crowe stays for a bit after Darling wakes up but ultimately leaves for classes. Darling ends up seeing another student who seemingly has had his hand cut and he gets bandaged up before Darling ultimately goes back to art class.

Choosing to go to the roof will lead to Darling going to the roof to eat lunch, only to end up accidentally eavesdropping on someone during a call. The boy, Hyugo, asks Darling for a favor to take his place as he needs to ditch his partner, Sol, in his next class to do something.

Choosing to go to the library will lead to them going there to read, only to find someone in their seat. There are a couple of ways this can go depending on choice. The one with the least interaction is sitting next to him then going to class afterwards to see him in the back. Sitting in another seat will lead to Darling seeing a commotion in the back where the guy is getting beat up. Here, they can either step in or chicken out. Chickening out will lead them feeling guilty when the two meet up in class, but helping them out will prevent him from getting bandaged later. Talking to him directly leads to the most interaction with him, with Sol getting more snarky with the player, and asking what they will give him in return. The best response is to just demand him to give them their seat back, to which he refuses and Darling ends up sitting on them, causing them to blush and start talking about the book he's reading, Edgar Allan Poe and well as what books that Darling has been reading before the two head to class. Choosing to do something intimate will lead to Darling asking if he wants a hug to which he makes a confused response and Darling will end up sitting next to him after a bit of awkwardness. They can also offer to buy him a drink where they can choose (the latte will have the best response out of him) before they head to class.

Darling will end up spotting Sol in the back seat (as the name implies) though will have different reactions depending on their interaction with Sol, to feeling embarrassed that they left him to get bullied, to surprised if the two met in the library etc. The professor will ask everyone to pair up and Darling is left to partner up with Sol. The two will introduce themselves to each other, before deciding who will be drawn first. Sol will have different interactions based off whether Darling declares they're good at drawing to bad at drawing as well as which route they took (and how much affection he has towards them.) So this can vary from him getting embarrassed that Darling is trying to draw him from a 3/4ths angle to, to him brushing hair away from Darling's face that gets them flustered, to talking about Hyugo and others. It all really depends on previous interactions. At the end, while Darling is leaving, Sol will ask for their number as a way to keep in touch with them for the project. Upon leaving, they'll also see a poster for the Hallow's Ball. Upon returning to the dorm and eating, Darling will talk to their other friends, Geo, Deryl, Brittney, Jess and Krowe about the ball. They will then text Sol about the ball, who seems hesitant, but ultimately agrees to go knowing Darling is going. The last scene is Sol masturbating to Darling's messages, implying he's done it before and that he's happy that they finally were able to talk.

So first thing I have to say off the bat is I really like the designs of all the characters. They all have their own charm and are unique, which I can always appreciate. I also like that Brittney isn't really like the mean girl she's depicted as she is considering she pretty much just asks Darling to come eat with them and basically only really fights when she gets attacked first. Kind of a minor thing, but I do like it. Small animation in the main menu is nice as well. One of the things I think is cool is that there are slightly different reactions to how you meet Sol when the two of you draw each other, which can lead to different CGs and dialogue, which is a subtle but nice way to give bits of information about them and more interaction with him without having to write out a bunch of scenes.

Sol as a yandere, well there's currently not a ton considering it's a demo, however, we still do get a semi good idea on what he does know. For one, we know that Sol has been stalking Darling for a while, given his comments at the end, and that he has been listening to their voice for a bit. I do like seeing his more flustered reactions in some cases, like when Darling sits on his lap or when they're drawing him, because flustered yanderes are the best. It's likely that he probably got a favor for Hyugo on his route, considering it's very coincidental, and it would make sense that he would manipulate the situation so that he would end up hanging out with Darling. Sol it seems has been dealt a hard hand in life, considering he always gets bullied or otherwise hurt by others. Still, this could also in itself be a manipulation tactic in terms of getting Darling to care about him, which would make him technically a Damsel yandere, something I would be very happy to see, since that's something that I would love to see more in yandere content in general. But yeah, other than that he seems like emo (gothic? punk? I don't know styles), and a bit awkward.

Overall, he seems very cute and the game itself is very well made. I hope we get to see more of it in the future because it does seem like something that does have a lot of potential in what kind of yandere can come later on.

Future Silhouette Serenade Sisters

Ok I know that we're still far away til the war future of the fic but can you blame me for fantasizing on how badass MC and Nebula are gonna be? No just me? WELP to bad cause I've already drawn so you deal with my fantasies for now Kay?

Now, TIME TO RAMBLE ON DESIGN DETAILS!!!

For MC honestly she's the easiest since I wanted her to resemble Glowburst since she's mentioned to resemble her carrier but since this is into the distant future with MC's character arc in a war I wanted her to also have her own thing going on and to look like she's a warrior in her own right. Also yes I wanted to give her tattoos (or should I say biolights in this case?) because of two reasons which is one I thought it would be cool if MC goes to Nyon to get her tattoos as her pride for her heritage and also like come on MC would definitely LOVE to have beautiful engravings on her!! And cause two I thought it would be so funny if when the war goes on and MC has her own faction the reason it was made was because people thought her tattoos was a symbol of a new faction and when everyone realizes it wasn't they still stay along making a new faction cause they liked being with MC as their leader, I don't know I thought it'd be funny. And funfact at first I wanted to give MC freckles like belle in the U movie but it made the face part cluttered so instead I decided on making Belle's freckles be marks on MC's battle mask, tho still wanted MC to have abit of something on her face so I just made only her left cheek to have freckles with a star on. Why I put a scar on MC's right optic? I just thought it would be so angsty that her right optic that has resemblance on the decepticons red optics color cause the one that gave her that scar thought she was "evil" only to realize later on that she wasn't and now MC has a mark on her face for something she didn't do but she wore it proudly without regret cause in her mind it is a symbol of her resilience. For MC's claws tho, uuuuhhhh I might have just made it cause I thought it made MC hot.

And finally for Nebula I wanted to design a future version on her cause like COME ON!!! I say it ain't fair that Nebula doesn't get an evolved version as her sister cause like I'm pretty sure she's gonna get her own character arc going on since while we're seeing this in MC's perspective, honestly technically this journey is as much of Nebula's as it is MC's and come tell me if MC wouldn't be fangirling over how badass her sister is? So when I designed Nebula honestly can I just say I'm so disappointed in myself cause only now I just realized even with me drawing Nebula a lot I never incorporated ANY actual nebulas, which is a cloud of stars, into Nebula's design and I am DEVASTATED CAUSE IT WAS SUCH A MISSED OPPORTUNITY!!! but I've come to compromise that all the designs before this one of Nebula because she hasn't fully evolved yet and her evolution was from smokes/mists into clouds (just pretend I've planned this all along Kay please?). And with that I just went ALL OUT on it! I was trying to based off Nebulas look like she's wearing those over the top bed robes where there's fluff on the edges of them cause I thought it would be so badass that Nebula practically looks like she was pissed being worked up from her nap and she just KO everyone just to finally get them to shut up so she can get more shut eye time (and cause cloudy stars made it look like sleepy dream times right?) and I honestly made Nebula with a concept of volcanoes cause I thought it would be so cool since it made her look like she's about to "erupt" with her abilities and cause I wanted Nebula to have her own way to show she's from Nyon cause like come on HELLO Nebula is also Glowburst's daughter here and she's just as proud of her heritage as her sister!! And I love how by making the marks that looks like lava flowing down that it made Nebula look like a storm cloud which I thought both ways it really fits! Tho question which hair cloud do you prefer Nebula with, up or down with a swirl like bangs? I couldn't really decide so I drew Nebula what she might look like with her hair down tho honestly I also like the thought that Nebula likes to style her cloud hair in styles that MC told her sister about, Nebula wants to have fun with her style too you know?

i don't think there is a single avatrice au fic that i haven't read so here are some my favorites. i tried to find ones that weren't as popular, so hopefully there are couple here you haven't read.

I want to believe by puppybusby @yashastrongarms - x files au - basically 23k of avatrice flirting while being incredibly reckless with alien shit. unfortunately, it is only a one shot that doesn't delve into their relationship, but it is so worth it. and the tension. woof.

Truly a Steadfast Love by StoicLastStand - medieval au - they have a whole series of ficlets, but this is one of my favorites. there's a tournament to win ava's hand in marriage, ava goes undercover to fight for her freedom, but she ends up falling for the very knight who everybody wants to win. i also love their lucifer au, Greater Sacrifices.

a lover, or something of mine by Smokestarrules - reincarnation au - each chapter is a different life with a different story, and i promise you, if you have anything that even resembles a heart, you will cry. i keep going back and rereading chapter 4 because apparently i love to hurt myself. i also love the world is just illusion (trying to change you) by them, it's a road trip au.

Simon Petrikov started out as an antiquarian. He lived with his fiancé at the time, Betty (I’ll discuss her later). At some point Simon finds a magic crown, puts it on and ends up with powers he can’t control.

As a child Welt was the son of someone apart of a powerful organization (I don’t actually remember what it was sorry). He looked up to someone named Welt Joyce (who was a herrscher, I’m not explaining what that is here). Joyce then dies and passed his power onto Welt, making him a herrscher.

Eventually he’s caught in the apocalypse, while simultaneously causing everything to freeze. He ends up finding Marceline (I’ll talk about her too) and takes care of her.

Welt meets Bronya, a young Valkyrie. He decides to train her and later passes his own power onto her, making her the third herrscher of reason. (I couldn’t find a photo for them)

Simon eventually goes insane and forgets everything, except the fact that he misses Betty. She does come back, but she ends up summoning a god, freeing Simon from his curse, then dies.

Welt was friends with Murata Himeko, and taught her in collage/high school (I don’t actually know what grade she was in). He ends up having to kill her father, which puts her on the path to becoming a Valkyrie, which ends up causing her death. (BY THE WAY IM NOT SHIPPING WELT AND HIMEKO. the situations were just similar)

At the end of the finale episode, Simon is seen talking to Prismo, which we later find out he had wished for Betty to come back, but Prismo was unable to bring her back.

Welt becomes an ally to Void Archives, who helps him get to another universe to find an alternate version of Himeko so that Welt could make up for what he did.

Years later, in the most recent series, Fionna and Cake, we see him older. He tries to summon Golb again, but accidentally summons Cake instead. Eventually, he meets Fionna as well and the three of them travel to different universes, seeing different versions of people he knew

Welt meets the alternative version of Himeko, who is a member of the Astral Express.

The first being Farmworld Finn. He's a direct parralel to regular Finn and Fionna. His design and personality are the most notibly different, but technically he's also regular Finn, just a copy? Because when Finn and Jake first met Prismo, Finn ended up being transported to another universe. But like. It doesn't really matter.

I see Himeko as being a parrele to these two so not much needs to go here.

Then they meet the Winter King in the Winterworld, who is an alternate version of Simon. He's basically just a worse version of him, and ends up dying so he isn't too important

Welt and a few other members of the Astral Express travel to the Loufu, where they meet Luocha, an alternate version of Void Archives/ Otto.

The final important world is the Vampire World where was see Marceline as like an eviler version of herself. (Also keep in mind her relationship with Princess Bubblegum in this is VERY different from the original versions of them. They hate each other in this world) The reason for her being evil is because she ends up being raised by someone other than Simon (SOUNDS FAMILAIR)

On a planet called Belobog, an alternative version of Bronya is introduced, though Welt isn’t there. I’ll make a separate post about Bronya and Marceline.

ATLAS ࣪ ִֶָ☾.

I already answered the first one HERE, but I think Atlas would be a human and either a ranger or a fighter class. So technically he would be a different race, as he’s a Magicus in canon!! Maybe if he really needed to be he’d be a half-elf…. I could kind of see him being one..

How Atlas handles his physical health honestly depends on which arc in the story he’s in. Despite being homeless from the second arc all the way to the fifth, he does his best to stay relatively healthy throughout their frequent journeys. (Even if he does stink a little.) But Atlas at the same time, has little regard for himself when he is injured. He’ll hide injuries and push himself, as well as refusing medical care, which can cause problems on their own.

In the latter arcs Atlas goes through a ton of shit that leads him down to some not-so-great coping mechanisms (drugs, plainly) and his physical health deteriorates pretty badly. It’s not until he’s well in his twenties where he’s really taking care of himself properly — which means getting first aid care when he’s hurt or sick.

I didn’t really have a super big inspiration for Atlas I don’t think. When I was creating him Felix was my primary oc, and he as a character is someone who’s loud and reactive and expressive. With Atlas, I wanted to create a character who’s the opposite of that. Calm, composed, and stony-cold.

RYUJI 𓇢𓆸

Ryuji, obviously, would be a necromancer, considering he currently is one in canon. I could also see him being a half-elf in a true fantasy story. He just gives some of those vibes to me.

Ryuji does not take care of himself whatsoever. Because Metamorphosis deals with mental health as a primary theme throughout the story (the Immortai are in a sense supposed to represent the effects of grief, generational trauma and mental illness on a person with a magic twist), Ryuji is severely depressed. It reflects on how he behaves and how he views himself, eating, sleeping, and showering very little, especially when his curse grows worse. When Yara first sees him she quite literally wonders if he’s homeless or on drugs — partially due to the fact he’s talking to himself — but still, a big part of it is his disheveled appearance.

I made Ryuji back in 2021 originally, and I remember originally he was based off of wisteria flowers. He had purple hair and eyes, and also a lot of snake motifs throughout his design. Obviously that ended up changing a lot throughout the years, and he doesn’t look at all like his original design anymore.

ODESA ౨ৎ

Odesa would be a fighter class in a high-fantasy setting, and a human. And perhaps she’d be a human gifted with prophetic visions…..

Odesa takes care of herself moreso than Ryuji does. Fashion and her physical appearance is very important to her, something that gives her a sense of control and calm in their unstable, violent lives. She always does her make-up before departing on missions, as it gives her some sense of normalcy in their fucked up world. When Yara first meets her, she notes that Odesa looks very beautiful and put-together, her outfits being very flashy and “something [Yara] could never pull off with such confidence and grace”.

Odesa was originally from a whole different story with an ex-friend of mine, so when I added her to the revamp of Metamorphosis, I completely reworked her character. When I was first making her I was just scrolling Pinterest for design inspo, when I came across a girl with those y2k spiky space buns and angel bite piercings. Those two things have been a staple of her design since.

so i stayed up five minutes past my bedtime to watch this so here’s my quick review of Mega Man: Start:

They went back to using Rock, and referred to the city as 'Mega City'. It may be small, but it's still a win in my book.

I really like characterizations in this adaptation. Although Dr. Wily is not present, you can tell he's more clever here, with his use of more subtler methods to corrupt the Robot Masters one by one instead of kidnapping them all

This was technically a Mega Man episode, but the focus was more on Rock and who he was before being Mega Man. I really like how they had him assemble his weapons on the go and not rely on the copy chip, which I think he didn't have at that point??? Not only that, this adaptation got Rock's personality down to a T! He begs Dr. Light to go out and fight the corrupted Robot Masters, despite being told several times that it's too dangerous, and he doubts himself when he feels like he didn't do the right thing. I'm impressed with how much they managed to show with only five or so minutes on the clock

Side note: I love his voice! It's almost exactly how I thought it would sound. He looks like a kid and sounds like a kid... my babie

Overall, I thought this was a really good setup for the first game. This episode goes over the cause of the main conflict, and sets the characters and setting well enough for a short.

The orchestral arrangement of the Mega Man 2 was good, even though I don't really like 'EPIC ORCHESTRA REMIX' versions of songs.

On cons:

I think the biggest weakness of this adaptation was time. I was worried that there wouldn't be much of a story to tell with only five minutes, and unfortunately, I was kind of proven right. This feels more like an extended, cinematic opening cutscene of the first game than anything else

Also what happened to Roll?

I also don't really like how it looks. Rock has these ugly big bug eyes that makes him look unsettling to me. Also his armour kinda sucks design wise

Bomb Man looks... okay i guess

oh yeah and he doesn't shoot lemons so if you came to see that youre gonna b disappointed

More Digitwst! Ortho Shroud stuff (this post is technically like. Months old, I only just got around to finishing it)

Some notes about her under the cut:

She is an AI created by her brother (Idia). She interacts with her brother through an app that he made in the Net Ocean (appmon influence lol) she spends most of her time in the Digital World though. The upper left drawing is meant to represent that. Idia is looking in on her through his tablet, and Ortho Shroud feels small in comparison (there is so much going on with them lol)

Due to (my headcanons of) digimon/digital world customs, if you introduce yourself as something, then that’s what you’re called. Nicknames and shortening of names is only for close friends/partners or family, otherwise it’s seen as rude. As Ortho Shroud introduces herself with her full name, that’s what I will refer to this AU’s version of her as

The full body drawing is of her design once she joins the main group, being this “season’s” 6th ranger character for the main cast of freshman. All of them are 12 in this AU however,to better fall into digimon’s usual age group. For the anime at least. As for notes on her actual design, I was inspired by that one time twst was promoting some merch, and had all the characters dressed up in the tee shirts they were selling. Here’s the picture of what I’m talking about:

Ortho Shroud has a very similar top to this, the only real difference is the sleeves being shorter and the waistband sectioning her shirt. This creates the added effect of making it look kinda like she’s wearing a skirt, which I think deserves! Tbh I’m not entirely sure on the colors of her mask, I just know I wanted it to have those cyan accents. Same with the shoes, I wanted to give her some pink on her design and felt like those would be a good place for it, but idk. If I color her again, I’ll probably play around with that some more. I also decided to give her some LED bracelets, of which can change colors! This girl is Glow In The Dark. Her waistband also has her name written on it in the Latin alphabet of Digimoji, the writing system of the digital world.

Everyone in the main cast lives in the Ramshackle Mansion, and so the sign is the one she made to put outside of her door! Also, no ships will be made canon in this AU, but I thought it would be cute if Ortho Shroud had a crush on this AU’s version of Yuu. I think it could be made into a running gag that Yuu and Grim have no fucking clue about it while everyone else just pities her for falling for the only one who doesn’t realize Ortho Shroud’s crush on her. (Everyone agrees that if they were in Ortho Shroud’s shoes they probably also would’ve fallen for/developed an attachment to Yuu, based on sexuality and all, but feel bad that somehow Yuu hasn’t noticed the multitude of times the tips of Ortho Shroud’s hair goes punk when around them. The reason for this crush is because Yuu was the one to save her from letting the underworld take her when she falls in) (Yes, Yuu is the one who jumps in in this AU, not Vil, as 1) Vil isn’t here and 2) Grim also fell in. Like hell (heh) Yuu’s not going to do anything about that)

The comic is just a silly joke that perhaps only I find funny, about the design of most female presenting Digimon and the fact that Ortho never actually wears clothes, just different gears (like for real. Why are we seeing her ribs and stuff? I know that naturally skinny people exist, I’m one of them, but either she’s not wearing clothes or they’re so tight that you can see that. It’s fine cause she’s a robot, but I thought it’d be funny to draw attention to in this way)

Also the eye mask version of her design is a beanie and she lets her hair down. She’s also able to eat even though she doesn’t need to if she has a mouth, because everything is made of data. She’s also able would not be able to eat analog world food because it’s made of DNA and not 1s and 0s. Good thing she can’t go to the analog world ig?

And finally the drawing at the bottom is her when she just started out at STYX, young, naïve, non sentient, and then there’s a picture of her after she’s worked at STYX for who knows how long. Transitioning helped, but the weight of time still exists

The quorra problem | Programs, isos and the real world

Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with Quorra as a character! It’s more of a story element critique if anything, please read and don’t jump on me for the title. Quorra is adorable and I enjoy legacy- even if it doesn’t look like it from how I keep tearing it apart.

It’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. On one hand you can’t leave her inside the grid when Flynn decides to literally go nuclear but you can’t leave her in the real world either. They have to because they wanted Flynn’s self sacrificing ending or wrote themselves into a corner (this isn’t about reintegration but I will still complain) and this was there way out. But they didn’t consider the implications of it at all.

Cosmic horror-

I’ve made several posts about it and still want to write something with this idea but to a program— the real world wouldn’t be so miraculous like how we see theirs. The minute you’re outside you’re Imediately bombarded with sensory overload and just too much information to process. The grid, which is much more human in its design than the ENCOM system, is still infinitely more minimalist than our world. One of the best scenes is Clu and his team raiding the hideout and not knowing what a single thing is and freaking out, she seems too well adjusted for someone who’s spent a few hours max here— look I know it’s the end of a movie and they can’t do that whole arc, but I digress.

Also don’t get me started on the rumored Ares plot and how they totally forgot quorra is already a program(technically iso) in our world- also it’s not really a “tron” movie plot— where’s the allegory?! The metaphor?! The symbolism?!

Another thing is that…Sam can’t tell anyone about her. Maybe Alan but her mere existence in our world is brain shattering. Trying to explain a advanced humanoid being that’s not here to harm us and is totally cool guys almost never goes well. It also leaves people a LOT to grapple with…like everything we know being forever altered.

This whole situation should be terrifying from both perspectives, however I love the theory that the only reason she was able to get out into the real world at all was because of Flynn’s data stored in the beam. That’s a great thought that almost makes me like her being in the real world just from how much impact that is.

Infectious-

What happens now? She can’t be revealed to the world (yet) and to put her back in the remains of the grid would be cruel. Putting her in another system would be wildly irresponsible because- do we even know what ISOs do? Across all media its “they’re special” but absolutely squat on their actual function or what they’re capable of. We see they have some kind of digital dna that’s literally a miraculous occurrence but that’s about it. Did Flynn even know? Are they just there- existing but not effecting/having a real world computer impact? Or worse - what if clu was right and they did contribute to the crumbling state of the grid? (I think it was a combination of his own fear and scapegoating—I’m just tossing the idea out there).

Sam transferring her over to another system without knowing what she does or how she could effect it would be disastrous. Am I saying she’s dangerous or would have any intent to harm? No not at all that’s now who she is, but it’s sort of a “releasing a domestic cat into the woods a state over” you don’t do that.

Does she get a regular job now, does Sam hire her at ENCOM? She’d likely be some sort of computer smart…in that she come from one. Or does he like —- set her up at a McDonald’s? How’s she get energy does she get plugged in- being in the real world isn’t going to magically give her a stomach. Sam just takes her to a power grid and she causes SoCal to blackout lmao.

Open portal-

I’m aware most of this post is just me overthinking the implications of everything they didn’t intend us to think to hard about. It’s supposed to be “yippee they’re safe” and I’m worried about digital ecosystems and what the human brain can handle. I think my problem mainly strives from this trope where the character brings home their friend from the other world/ is the reverse situation and no one bats an eye at all. It’s because they want the characters to still be friends no matter how many rules it breaks or sense it makes. It happens most commonly in cartoons. (There’s at least 3 in recent memory)

I’m not saying I want quorra to have been caught in the blast but that there’s a way they could’ve kept communication without world breaking. Open portal situation where he goes back to visit, he chats with her on the screen, both stay in their own worlds its sad but logical etc (I’m not writing a new ending but you get the point).

I guess it annoys me so much because it’s left so open ended, ride off into the sunrise while ignoring the implications™️. “I guess, We’re going to change the world” ok how 🧍‍♂️. The movie did not nearly give me enough information about ISO’s to see what changes they exactly do besides taking over ENCOM. “They[Iso’s] changed everything” ok how🧍‍♂️. Yeah it’s immaculate conception but what do they do I am shaking your shoulders Disney what do they do!

It’s not quorra I’m mad about or even the concept of ISO’s but it’s how the writing just falls short in these HUGE areas that require a lot of lore and information to be given that they just do not. And consistently don’t In the other media forms like betrayal (I haven’t seen uprising maybe they explain something). If you’re going to have beings that shatter your ideas of reality you sort of have to explain that!

so like. mostly 'cause i thought it'd be an interesting idea, the way i like to view Mike is that he's Rainer's polar opposite personality wise. he's endlessly optimistic and positive, he's outgoing, you get the idea.

but they're also different in how they like. express emotions.

Rainer struggles to express his emotions because sometimes he can't put a name to whatever emotion he's feeling. so he gets poetic and cryptic with it (an exception to this is like. hatred and grief. He Knows When He's Feeling Those).

Mike can understand what he's feeling, but can Not articulate it concisely, or very clearly, since he goes on tangents. this is why he likes expressing his emotions through colors and shapes.

to give an example:

Jill asks her sons how they're doing. both of 'em are kinda pissed off. here's how they'd articulate that, though.

Rainer: I feel like a steaming kettle, like I'm about to lose it. Kinda like I wanna strangle someone, tbh. Not sure if I'm just tired or hungry, though. (< technically both of those contribute to it, but uh. Neither Are The Main Emotion He's Feeling)

Mike: Upset, like uh...Storm* when he's feelin' stormy, y'know? Like a lil growly puppy. Like a rainstorm, Ma. Think the color red but spiky n' sharp. Like this kid at school really ticked me off- (God have mercy on you if you had anything to do for the next six minutes)

autism runs in the family doesnt it….. i love how you can potray two autistic characters so differently and still ahve them both be very autistic. i also have alexithymia and end up sounding cryptic and strange so i totally understand rainer…. adding that to the list of things your rainer does that i also do. i also feel like mike would have synesthesia because thats also more common in autistic people and also artists. speaking of art. i think their art would also be kinda opposite, more like a thinking vs feeling approach where rainer is better with design work and michael is more comfortable drawing and painting and such. just a thought….

A Voice through Type

The typeface is the voice of a text—so they say. But what kind of voice? On closer inspection we are mostly talking about well-behaved ones. For corporate logos they need to have enough general appeal to appease the largest possible audience. For most articles they are more comparable to ambience in order to serve the message. Wouldn’t it be fun to take this statement more literal and apply it to (fictional) people? Giving the textual representation of speech a visual indicator regarding the character of the speaker and the quirks of their voice. Sounds fun—at least as an experiment.

A limit to our fun

A few limitation beforehand. What I propose here is not a method. It is more like a thought-process that I hope can help to decide on a typeface representation of a character. Voices are wonderfully complex. We change our voice depending on speaking context or emotion. Picking various fonts or designing a super-family that would feel cohesive while also being meaningfully different for each situation would be super cool, but also very overwhelming. We are talking more of a proof of concept here. So I focus more on a general representation. Broad strokes often are a good thing when we are talking about details of details (the thing letters are in the context of a page or screen). I’m also gonna brush over the intricacies of characterization of people. To keep it simple let’s say we work mainly with a adjective-based framework that can be extended by whatever association comes to our mind in regard to the character.

It’s not a rigid system but a fun experiment after all. Talking about fun: The limit to our fun isn’t the sky, but legibility and readability—to a degree. Namely how well the letters are decipherable and how easy it is to read the text based on the merits of the chosen font. If we pick something very out there and expressive we might jeopardize the legibility. Same goes for readability. If the font causes discontent in the reader, they might hate it when the character speaks. On the other end: Maybe that is exactly what you want. Another way to circumvent these issues would be to limit the expressive font to the speakers name. The actual dialog could then be set in a more general font. The name would then function as a kind of logo that by proxy colors the words of the speaker. But it would also introduce a form of abstraction, as the typographic voice wouldn’t be as immediately connected to the words. Also, you are missing out on a lot of cool glyphs with this method. As a time-saving alternative it is still interesting.

The establishment

Now to the actual task at hand: Drawing a connection between typeface and characterization. In essence this process comes down to dealing with readers expectations. That doesn’t mean you need to meet all these expectations. I’m operating under the assumption that typographic connections are somewhat arbitrary. Arbitrary in this case doesn’t mean random. Readers’ associations can be wildly different, based on their personal experiences and preferences. A blackletter font can look edgy-cool to one person, to someone else it might look traditionalistic. One person might find Helvetica timeless, someone else might find it overstayed its welcome. A Font that looks exciting to one viewer, someone else might find pretentious. As designers we can’t look into other peoples’ heads. But we can make an educated guess. 

Because even though everyone is an island, no one actually is an island. Our associations with typefaces are based in a common learned visual language that is shaped by the context in which we see fonts used. For example for the longest time Apple used lightweight sans serif typefaces to promote their technical gadgets. This resulted in the association of light sans with luxury. On the opposite site the usage of Comic Sans by many small businesses resulted in an association by the wider public with affordability. Futura still can be associated to futurism and space-travel because of “2001: A space Odyssey.” 1 Blackletter fonts are perceived either iffy due to the appropriation for nazi propaganda or traditionalistic due to the usage in traditional restaurant signage (at least in Germany). Typographic associations are of course subject to change. This can come in the form of trends or simply new use-cases.2 To use Blackletter as an example again: The young folks (that definitely doesn’t make me sound old) first association with this letter type is more likely to be with urban street wear.

For our purpose established associations can serve as shorthand. Similar to the way stereotypes are used for writing characters. When we use typography tropes in such way, the shorthand should not be the end-goal. Just as a stereotype in character writing is not the end-goal for characterization but a “conversation opener.” The more interesting character—typography connections come from subverting expectations or building onto them.

Spiky means angry

Another well to draw from are haptic and kinetic associations. A letter with spiky features will probably evoke the haptic feedback of touching a spiky object. In contrast, a font with very round features will cause associations with smooth and round surfaces just by proximity. A light typeface can be perceived as flimsy or as filigreed. Bold letters can be associated with heaviness. A font with a wide letterform can be perceived as steady and immovable. Oblique weights often imply a form of movement. For our little experiment we could use these associations to refer to unique features in a character’s appearance or personal traits.

A final aspect to consider when associating typefaces with characters is the “well-it-just-looks-cool” aspect. As with most things in design picking something you like because you think it looks cool, is a valid reason. One could argue that what looks cool to a designer is not just personal preference but (also) the result of research and exposure to different designs. To pick something that looks cool in this case is also a good way to create new typographic associations. So that is an added bonus.

While all these aspects are important when considering font associations, more often than not typographic nuances go right over most readers heads. 3 This means on the one hand to be blunt with your choices. Tiny letter details that you consider important to convey a characters personality are likely to get overlooked. If not due to the text size than because typographic nuance is often not perceivable to laypeople. The latter aspect could also be considered freeing, as you can try a lot of type shenanigans that go under the radar.

Words into actions

Enough overthinking. Time to put these concepts into action. For that we need a volunteer. May I propose we go with everyone’s favorite android songstress Hatsune Miku.

Hatsune Miku is a fictional character that was created for the software synthesizer ›Vocaloid‹ in 2007. The software is able to not only interpret notes with different pitch and velocity but also with vocals—hence the name. The sound is based on the voice actress Saki Fujita’s voice. The resulting sound is a very distinct robotic, and high-pitched voice, fitting for idol pop music. The software found a wide-spread following—which can in large parts be attributed to the iconic character design by Kei Garō. The concept for the character was that of a singer-diva android in a future where all songs are lost and need to be reinterpreted. As the character started to gain a life of its own through a large fan community and motion-captured life concerts with her as a hologram, the character is a bit more of a Japanese idol than a diva.

Hatsune was imagined as an android—a machine build in the image of humans. Considering this, references to the digital would be out of place, as she is meant to exist in the physical world of the future. Existing typefaces associated with technological progress have a tendency to look dated. Dated, in the sense that you can tell what idea of future shaped its design (think for example of ›Eurostyle‹). Going the “2001” route—using Futura as a shorthand for futurism—wouldn’t fit due to its mechanical construction principle. A more contemporary mix-style of geometric and grotesque sans could fit the “machine-imitating-a-human“ theme. Than again, to me this seems a bit too sterile, considering Miku’s implied extroverted-ness. Therefore I think focusing on this aspect is more promising.

The typographic style that caries the most diva-ness for me is the modernist serif form principle (Didot). It is often used in the context of high fashion, where it communicates carries an air of aloof-ness, quality and beauty. Typefaces in the modernist style emphasize verticality, and feature constructed shapes, as well as extreme stroke contrasts. 

I want to draw a connection between the constructed letter shapes and the artificial construction of an android like Miku and her singing voice. I think the modernist form principle transports this better than geometric type, as it is less streamlined in its construction and allows for more decorative elements. Also the high contrasts read to me as eccentric and therefore fitting well with the diva aspect. Because androids are modeled after humans but are still distinct from them, I think it could be cool to add a detail that implies human behavior was imitated but in a wrong way. I thought mirroring the shadow axis of the “o” in a transitional serif type could be a nice nod in that direction. That will put the font more in the category of transitional Serif instead of modern, but that’s fine. I like the transitional Serifs more anyway. Also I want to add prominent ball terminals—just to be extra.

In case I would look for a font—not make one from scratch—I would need to make more compromises. But working with existing fonts also creates other association possibilities. Like, seeing some feature in a font and come up with an association afterwards.

Anyway, this process like I said is very biased and subjective. But, I still think it is a fun way to approach typeface selection. I’m also sure there is a certain applicability outside of characterization of fictional people. Why not use this thinking process to pick fonts for a logo?

It's Fictional Throwdown Friday!

This Week's Fighters...

Alex Mercer vs Tavros Nitram!

Conditions:

Prototype 2 Alex Mercer. Tavros has no become Gcatavrosprite yet.

Scenario:

Aradia has been amusing herself by traveling to post apocalyptic Doomed Timelines, where she ends up visiting a version of Earth where humanity nukes itself into oblivion trying to stop Mercer's infection. The liquefied remains of Alex travel along with her when she goes back to the meteor, hiding in the labs and assimilating left over imps to rebuild himself. Eventually Karkat sends Tavros to investigate because he keeps hearing weird noises coming from the vents, at which point Mercer attacks him.

Analysis: Mercer

It's the early 21st century and the apocalypse is here. A viral pandemic has engulfed New York city and begun assimilating all in It's wake. The government is powerless to stop the fleshy monstrosities that roam the streets. It seems that the end is here. And the man responsible is none other than Alex Mercer.

Fortunately, that is not who we're talking about today. Let's take it from the top.

Alex Mercer was a scientist who worked for the pharmaceutical company known as GENTEK. He was a brilliant virologist, a progidy even among GENTEK's most intelligent minds. As such, he was made head researcher on the Blacklight Virus, a powerful bio-weapon that promised to make the company rich. When his research was shut down by Blackwatch, a Government squad designed to contain viral epidemics, Mercer refused to go down quietly. He spitefully unleashed Blacklight onto New York as he was shot dead, the virus consuming and copying his body perfectly as it was freed.

Alex Mercer died that day and the Blacklight Virus woke up wearing his skin.

Believing itself to be Alex Mercer, the Blacklight Virus escaped from the morgue and set out to uncover his past and discover who he was. This doesn't go do well, as it results in him unleashing another sentient bioweapon known as the Redlight Virus, who swiftly begins causing chaos across New York. "Mercer" teams up with Mercer's sister Dana to both bring down GENTEK and stop the Redlight Virus, putting Blacklight into position to put together the pieces of his past by assimilating GENTEK staff.

The revelation that he isn't the real Akex Mercer shakes the virus to his core, giving him an existential crisis that follows him for the rest of his life. This causes him to eventually become disillusioned with humanity, motivating to try assimilating it into his own personal "superior race". This backfires when Mercer tries to assimilate Sgt. James Heller, whose "stuborn DNA" allows him to resist Mercer's influence after being transformed. Heller eventually grows strong enough to assimilate Mercer straight back, ending his spree for good.

From here on out, I'll be referring to the Blacklight Virus as Alex Mercer just for simplicity's sake, even if they are technically different characters.

Alex Mercer is effectively John Carpenter's The Thing on steroids. He's a sentient hunk of biomass capable of absorbing and shape-shifting into nearly anyone he so much as touches. While Mercer may technically be a "virus" he's shown to be capable of absorbing and infecting inorganic material, implying he attacks not on the cellular level, but the atomic one. This is what allows him to absorb and replicate clothing, as well as immitate the functions of some minor forms of technology, such as handheld radios. He also gains the memories of the people he absorbs, allowing him to use their identity to the fullest while undercover. He can even evade sensors designed specifically to detect viruses like himself and fool other shapeshifters.

Having said that, he still has plenty of combative powers at his disposal for when stealth isn't an option. His complete control over his own body grants him monstrous versatility, allowing him to turn his limbs into hammers that can smash tanks and whips that can pull helicopters out of the sky. He can create pseudo-wings to glide through the sky, can alter his eyes to see in the infrared spectrum and detect infected people, can run up walls, and can cover himself in steel-like armor to shrug off damage from powerful foes.

As if his offensive capabilities weren't enough, he's nigh unkillable to boot. He can shrug off the radioactive fallout of a nuke, can stop the Redlight Virus from trying to take over his mind, can endure explosions that reach up to several thousand degrees, and can adapt to being infected with every virus known to mankind. What's more his absurd levels of regeneration allow him to come back from being flat out liquified.

Anyone whom Mercer doesn't assimilate, he infects, granting him complete control over their mind and body. He's led an army thousands strong and nearly conquered the world with it. What's more, he gets stronger with every person he assimilates. Mercer as absorbed the Redlight Virus and the Supreme Hunter, two bioweapons even stronger than he himself was at the time, as he has the combined strength and experience of thousands of soldiers, making him a force to be reckoned with in combat.

For example, every time he transforms, he creates a shockwave the pushes away all of the clouds across Manhattan, which would require an energy equivalent to 102 kilotons of TNT.

In terms of speed, Alex is capable of processing all of the memories and experiences of a 69 year old man in a matter of seconds after absorbing him, suggesting he processes information at a rate equivalent to 197,816,727 m/s. Thinking at 66% light speed.

With all that being said, he still has one major flaw. Alex Mercer has a limited supply of biomass inside his body, which he must maintain by constantly absorbing other people. As such, his regeneration can fail if he takes enough constant damage and even on a full tank he has limits. When Mercer was obliterated by a nuke at the end of Prototype 1, only one small chunk of him remained. It was only after absorbing a crow that came to feed on him that Mercer came back.

Alex Mercer is an unstoppable, insatiable monster with apocalyptic ambitions... and the virus he made is pretty nasty too.

Analysis: Tavros

Alternia. The world before humanity. A death world designed to create conquerors and killers. Only the mightiest of warriors could possibly survive to adulthood. Only the cruelest killers would live long enough to join the fleet of the Alternian Empire and conquer the galaxy.

Tavros Nitram.... is not one of those warriors. Yet, he survives anyway. And Vriska hates him for it.

Tavros is a simple dude. When he's not playing Fiduspawn, rather, Troll Pokemon, he's happily LARPing with his friends while cosplaying Pupa Pan, troll Peter Pan. He's a shy and awkward dork on a planet full of bloodthirsty killers, which you think would make him an easy target. His Lusus isn't even big enough to protect him and he's a bronze blood, the second lowest rung on Alternia's bloodcaste.

Normally, you'd be right, but Tavros has an ace up his sleeve. His unparalleled ability with animal communion. He can control the minds of any animal he can telepathically reach, with his range expanding across entire universes. And when everyone else on the planet has a giant animal parent, that's a very easy way to guarantee no one messes with you. His telepathic ability can even extend to the nigh-omniscient First Guardians, reality warping gods tasked with preparing planets for the apocalypse, so long as they have some kind of animal component to them.

So, Tavros was left well enough alone... until he met Vriska.

Vriska... has had the opposite life experience on Alternia. Even with her similarly powerful telepathic abilities, she lived under a cruel, indifferent Lusus that demanded she hunt down and murder other kids to feed them to it, less she get eaten herself. Vriska, more than anyone, internalized Alternia's philosophy of might makes right. After all, if that wasn't true, then everything bad that happened to her happened for no reason at all and she was just a helpless teenage girl being pointlessly victimized. And Vriska could never admit to that.

So, when she sees Tavros living his best life without a single mean bone in his body, she figures she has to "toughen him up". If she won't, then he'll just die, right? No way someone can be a weakling and live a happy, carefree life.

So begain Vriska's attempts to ruin Tavros's life. Starting with her mind controlling him into jumping off a cliff to shatter his own spine, confining him to a wheelchair that his hive was not built to accommodate. Vriska would continually harass and bully him even as the world burned down around them, all under the guise of toughening him up.

This created something of a misconception in the fandom that Tavros is a complete pushover who lets everyone walk over him. This isn't completely untrue. Tavros is a complete disaster in social skills and the less said about his disastrous attempts to flirt, the better. He's nice, shy, and naive enough to see the best in everyone, even Vriska, which makes him struggle to put his foot down. He's even one of the only people on his team who'd never willingly take a life, even when Vriska tried to force him to kill her with mind control, he instead broke down crying and fled.

But, on the other hand, he does snark back at Vriska for her abuse constantly. He doesn't take anything she does to him lying down, he's just physically powerless to do anything about it and gets humiliated every time he tries. Remember, Vriska is the one most pushing the idea that he needs to be confident to fix all his problems... and Vriska is wrong.

Tavros is more than capable of handling himself in a fight. He used to play Fatal Live Action Roleplay for fun frequently and was confident enough in his abilities to go up against Vriska in it in the first place. LARPing is a lot more immersive when the other players are actively trying to kill you. Tavros spent hours side questing in SGRUB without having to kill a single imp, despite their hardcoded hostility. Equipped with a rocket powered wheelchair, Tavros can easily soar through the skies, charging foes down with his heavy lance. He even survived being carried down to Alternia on the back of a flaming meteor, just like everyone else on his team.

Keep in mind, one of SBURB's meteors hit the Earth hard enough to punch a massive hole in Jade's island, generating an energy equivalent to 4.24 megatons of TNT. So, being able to walk off an impact like that freshly after being born in nothing to sneeze at. After all, this impact was completely tanked by an unprototyped Sprite, which any SBURB Player would be stronger than at the minimum.

With his Fiduspawn cards, Tavros can create monsters to assist him in combat or call on the nearby wildlife for aide, preferring to use large groups to outnumber his opponents. Tavros is not the dedicated fighter Vriska is and he doesn't have to be. He's perfectly effective as he is doing what he's good at.

In terms of speed, Tavros can keep up alongside the likes of Equius, who can jump to his portal gate in a single bound, and can keep up in combat against the Beta Session's Black King. Seeing as the Black King was Prototyped up to twelve times, he should be faster than the three times Prototyped Jack Noir that fought evenly against Bro, who can move at 60 times the speed of light, throwing a Batarang within a single nanosecond.

Ultimately, Tavros's most impressive feat would come about after his death. After finally getting fed up with Vriska and ditching her, Tavros would help in the battle against Lord English in his own way. He'd gather an entire army of millions of ghosts, thousands of dead gods, to wage war against tge Lord of Time, persuading all of them to his side for the fate of all reality. Tavros would completely upstage Vriska's own plans to take the fight to Lord English and completely shatter her world view, just by being who he is. Just like he always had been from the start.

Alternia tried its damndest to beat the humanity out of every troll on the planet. It might have succeeded for awhile with Vriska, before her own character growth, but with Tavros... it never even came close.

Throwdown Breakdown:

This... is a hax vs stats fight.

It shouldn't suprise anyone that Akex decimates in terms of hax. Shapeshifting, regeneration, on contact assimilation and infection, etc. You can make an argument for Tavros's animal mind control having some grounds to work against Mercer, given he can effect anything animal related and Alex has absorbed the minds of animals before, but even if you did want to go there, Mercer has resisted mind control before from the likes of Elizabeth Green, so no dice.

What's shocking here, and I cannot believe I'm saying this, is.... Tavros has the massive advantage in stats.

Let's create a direct comparison. The nuke at the end of Prototype 1 exploded with an energy equivalent to 8 megatons of TNT.

Alex was far from the epicenter of the blast when he got caught up in it, meaning he did not absorb all of its energy, and yet, the explosion still almost killed him. It completely liquefied his body the pier and likely would've vaporized him if he'd taken it head on. Given how far away he was from the blast, he wouldn't even have taken 5% of the blast and that alone liquified him.

Tavros, meanwhile, powerscales above someone who tank a 4.24 megatons collision point blank....

Even considering the unknown degree to which Mercer gets stronger between games, the strength gap here is very clear cut.

And as for speed, well.... Alex can react at 66% of the light speed.... Tavros can react at 66 times *faster* than light speed. To put an exact number on it, Tavros is at least 25x faster.

I love power scaling, it creates power dynamics that are hilariously fucking dumb.

Now, yes, Tavros was crippled by a fall that should not have hurt someone this durable. That's a major facet of his character, in fact. But, by that same facet, Prototype 2 starts because an ordinary human with a combat knife was able to hurt Mercer, forcing him to regenerate. By all logic, the knife should've shattered on contact and that fall should've done nothing, especially given Tavros tanked a fall from orbit as a baby. Sometimes, outliers happen in character's power level for the sake of letting a plot happen. Writers aren't trying to be perfectly consistent physicists. They're trying to tell a story. And when both these characters are analyzed back to back without those constraints.... Tavros's feats are more impressive.

If Mercer gets his hand on Tavros for a second, he's dead. Instant assimilation. But, that's just never going to happen when Tavros can move 25x faster than Mercer can think. And when every single hit puts as massive dent in Mercer's biomass reserves, Alex is going to realize he's overmatched in a direct fight pretty quickly. As such, he'll try to break off, planning to use his shapeshifting to either ambush Tavros at a later point or try and find more biomass.

Given his personality, Tavros is not going to hunt down and execute Mercer while he runs away. It would take a lot of pushing to get Tavros actually ready to kill somebody and he has no idea who Mercer even is. He doesn't kill and he barely even likes fighting in self defense. He'd simply watch in confusion as this weird slime tentacle thing scrambles into the vents to lick its wounds. Then he'd shrug in confusion before floating off to report back to Karkat, nervous about.... whatever he just encountered.

Mercer would survive, but it'd be a big wound to his pride to run off like that.

I was really hankering for some DnD-Esq, fantasy-world characters to obsess about, and remembered that I can just design, create, and draw my own… So, after taking 4-5 days to get them done, here they are!!!

Elliot - Human Paladin

Very Paragon-type person.

He hopes he can find the Tomb of the Pure, pull the Sword of Light from its stone, and prove he’s the Destined Hero. But even if he can’t, he doesn’t truly mind. He still plans on fighting his hardest to protect people nonetheless.

He is from a small city that dealt with a lot of Undead from a nearby dungeon that the kingdom mismanaged and allowed to grow stronger than most, so he’s good at Smiting creatures with his Light Magic.

On the flip side, because of this, he kinda struggles weaving other elements into his magic, because of how used to using Light magic he is. He’s working on it though!

Sometimes crashes the fuck out whenever one of the girls gets hurt. Scary Paladin on a Warpath of ‘you’re gonna die for that’ type shit. Does his best to control himself, though, because using his magic when he’s angry is a tradeoff, power for efficiency.

He can quickly burn his Mana reserves up if he goes all out, but sometimes it's worth it for that handy boost to his strength, speed, and durability.

Briar - Fairy Barbarian

She is usually super happy-go-lucky, but has slight anger management issues when it comes to how small she is, and will often go ballistic on people who push her too far teasing her about it.

She is super tiny, but she wields a giant (comparatively) battle axe.

She also has size-changing magic that is too time-consuming to cast for combat unless prepared but perfect for… other, less life-or-death activities…

She has the strength of 10 strong Human men compressed in a body the height of a dagger. Very good at hitting critical spots against enemies due to her size and maneuverability and the force she can put behind her strikes.

Kyga - Demihuman (Dragon) Druid

Mostly Human-looking, with a slight snout to her face, and purple scales on her lizard-parts.

She has retractable claws, and is much stronger than she looks

She REALLY dislikes Wildshaping, but does very much enjoys manipulating and enhancing plant growth to entrap and devour her prey.

Has a garden inside a small Demiplane artifact where she experiments on dangerous new mutated plant minions.

She has a staff topped with a Dire Rat's head on it. When people ask her why it's a Dire Rat instead of any of the other dangerous monsters she's fought alongside the party, she usually says it's because Rats bring disease and famine and are one of the most destructive animals around.

Ana - Half-Elven Cleric

She is a super Faithful cleric to the Goddes of Light, and is well renowned for her honour and generosity.

Her healing spells are off the charts, power-wise.

She declined the offer from the Church of Light to become a Deaconess because they don’t travel much from church headquarters, and she prefers to spread the word (and healing magic) of the Goddess far and wide alongside her beloved party members.

She is the self-appointed Quartermaster of the group, because last time they let Kyga organise the rations they ate salted rat jerky for a month. Also, Briar once seemed to forget that they aren’t all super tiny and bought 5 sleeping bags that looked like they were for a dollhouse.

She dresses more like a rogue with a magical staff than a proper Cleric because she got tired of getting targeted and hit because of how clear it was that she was the healer, and likes being more stealthy nowadays.

Claire - Demihuman (Fox) Knight

Super tall, the tallest of them all. (6ft 5)

Buff as fuck under her armour.

Used to be a noble, but signed up to fight monsters cause her parents are really quite terrible.

She technically hasn’t been disinherited yet, due to her being the eldest child of the family, but she also doesn’t care either way, content and happy where she is.

She fights with a longsword in one hand and a parrying dagger in the other. Good at predicting an opponents moves and deflecting them.

She has a standard Knight's helmet with space for her big fox ears, but only wears it on combat. She also has armour for the base of her tail to protect it.

She gets super embarrassed when receiving honest praise, having lacked it early in life due to her aforementioned terrible parents.

She wags her tail when she’s happy and buries her face in the nearest surface (usually Elliot’s chest) when stunned.

And there you have it! I wanna draw these guys doing stuff and being fluffy and romantic amongst each other and stuff, so keep an eye out for that if you enjoy them!
