But, it made me think of something, and I was curious on your thoughts. You've spoken on your blog a bit about how we as a society sometimes put too much importance on romantic love. Going to the 'inevitable next step', does it ever irritate you ki the default is that everyone is expected to have kids? And if you do not, people assume it's related to some childhood trauma or personal insecurities. Like when I tell people I plan not to have kids, responses range from 'you'll change your mind when you're older' (I'm already in my mid 20s btw and mind ain't changing) to 'don't worry, everyone is scared of becoming a parent, but you'll learn'. That's fine, I'm sure I could learn to be a good mom if I wanted to, I don't have insecurities about my own competence or maternal instinct. I just don't want this.

Cristina Yang from Grey's Anatomy once said, "I’m not a monster. If I have a baby, I’ll love it....there is no compromise. You don’t have half a baby. I don’t want one. Okay? It isn’t about work, this isn’t a scheduling conflict, I don’t want to be a mother." And I've never vibed harder with a fictional character than that moment. It's so simple, yet so hard to explain to people sometimes.

Lmao, fuckingggggg ridiculous, man. Sex is not just for baby-making. Like you said, are people who don’t want kids just not ever supposed to have sex????? Even if a couple does decide they wanna have kids, is every session of sexual intercourse supposed to result in a child, and if not it’s a “wasted endeavor”????? Lord, this is why this planet needs comprehensive Sex Ed.

I’ve heard alllllllllll of the dialogues that you mentioned from friends and family (thankfully not from my parents though, who took it remarkably cool when I vehemently declared at the tender age of 16 that I was never EVER having biological kids..............) and every time someone’s told me I’ll change my mind, they just made me even more adamant about it. I’ve always hated that this expectation to have kids is so damn pervasive and unrelenting. Waise toh desi elders are all “dost kuwein mein koodega toh tum bhi koodoge kya???” and in any case someone wants to assert their right about their own life/body they’re all sAb KaRTe HaiN, tUm bHi KaR Lo!!!!!!! Fuck that noise. The fact that these people will never openly discuss sex and sexuality and abuse and misogyny but fully make it their business ki what you’re doing with your private parts in the privacy of your bedroom with another consenting adult is just fucking ridiculous.

When Christina said “There is no deeper reason. I wasn't abused. I don't have a dark secret. I wasn't mugged by a baby. I just don't want kids.”, I may have stood up and cheered, coz no other character has ever made me felt so SEEN about this issue. Other shows may have childfree women, but then they never really show them being accepted or loved or getting their happy endings after having made such a choice. That she decisively made herself crystal clear on the whole matter to everyone who needed to know, and then finally did get her heart’s desire makes me so so so happy.

(And speaking of Vansh/Riddhima, they shouldn’t even be in charge of a passive pet like a fucking goldfish, let alone a wholeass human child. Their relationship is so bloody messed up and toxic they’re riddled with 1001 mental issues, all of which they will not only pass on but also compound horrendously in that poor offspring. Not unless they have at least 5 years of counseling should these two be allowed to fuck without at least two [2] forms of birth control.)

It has come to our attention that there are some False Lies about MIT permeating the general populace. How far along are you in your studies? About to start the 4th/5th year of my undergrad program. So close, yet so far lol

How far do you plan on pursuing academia? I want to get my PhD and maybe I’ll do some post-doc work after that?

What made you want to attend university? My mom wasn’t able to attend in her home country and my dad got his Bachelor’s on his dad’s GI Bill. They allowed me to see how there are some limits without it and how education in this country is your ticket to money and living comfortably.

What do you study? Biomedical Engineering + Chemical/Biological Engineering

What do you wish to accomplish by studying at university? The end goal is to contribute to the knowledge in the field and have an impact on the community by inspiring underrepresented youth like me

What do you want to do with your degree? Be a researcher and teach in some capacity

What’s your dream job? Being a researcher and influencer for Latinx youth in STEM

Has university been what you expected it to be? Tbh, I don’t think so even though I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve learned SO much along the way that no one had the knowledge to tell me when before uni

What’s the most important thing you have learned about yourself at university? That I’m strong af, I can do whatever I want to in life–literally. And not to compare yourself to others

What has been the most interesting class you’ve taken? This past semester I took a biomedical eng project-based course and it was LIT af, very challenging but projects were super realistic and interesting

What has been your favourite class you’ve taken? Same course as 12^ like it made me realize my true style of learning and working and it was difficult but so so cool

What is your favourite professor like? Haha, same prof as 12 & 13^^ he was laid back, challenging, young and tech-savvy. More than anything, he was there if you just needed someone to talk to. He didn’t ‘bend’ rules but he knew what it’s like to be a student with limited resources and no super-human abilities. Just a cool guy I’d grab a drink with

If you have to write a thesis, what are you going to write it on? I will have to provide a written report for the independent study so I’m gonna ask if it can be like a thesis. It’ll probs be on something like improving multi-modal neuroimaging data fusion using machine learning

What is your weird academic niche? I’m not really sure. Sometimes I feel like I am my own niche? Lmao. I don’t really know how to answer this tbh

What’s your favourite thing about academia? That honesty and integrity are highly valued and people just like wondering about things on a deeper level and bigger scale and have conversations about it

What’s your least favourite thing about academia? That it’s toxic: not as diverse, kinda bureaucratic, research matters more than ability to teach (in the US)

Would you go to a different university if you had to choose again? Yes and no: instead of going to a different uni then transferring to where I am now, I would 100% just have gone to the one I’m at now in the first place

What is your favourite course style? More applied learning, like projects. Not as exam heavy.

How did your attitude towards studying and school change between high school and university? Uni hit me like a truck bc my high school was not the best. I learned to live and breathe studying, how to learn, how to manage my time, and my attitude is more serious and business-minded, but also have crazy fun in the right time and place

What do you do to rewind? Like to unwind? exercise, make music, watch movies, hit the hot tub

Best tip for making friends at university? Be yourself and be honest :)

Are you involved in any clubs/societies/extracurriculars? President for a diversity student org and I do intramural sports!

Have you done or are you planning on doing any internships? I’ve completed one research internship and I hope to do another next summer.

What is an interesting subject that you would never study yourself? Physics probably lol

How do you study? I try to vary it– I’ll read, do a crap ton of practice problems, do a study group with a lot of talking and teaching each other concepts, watch videos from other sources

What things do you think you did right in your first year? Was honest with myself

What are your thoughts on Academia? It can be good and bad, and it’s up to us as the next generation to change the bad :)

Strangest university tip you have? Hmmmmm... Don’t assume all your advisers/administration/profs know what you’re truly capable of. (not strange, but I don’t think it’s that common)

My Experience With Coding

One of my most requested blog posts since starting graduate school has been about programming, my experience with coding and why I need it for Neuroscience. I received a lot of questions since I started sharing about learning Python last summer, as well as taking a MATLAB programming course last semester. I wanted to write this post and share my insights; however, I also had to finish my MATLAB course first! So here it is, my long awaited post about computer programming!

I’ve been always interested in programming but was scared to try it because female coders are still not taken seriously... I definitely support my fellow girl bosses who are majoring in computer science, engineering or any other STEM field because most likely they will also need to learn at least a couple of programming languages! Neuroscience is part of STEM and because my masters program is focused on research and I am still dreaming of becoming a scientist I needed to learn programming for data analysis.

SPSS

I have basic data analysis and research skills from taking statistics courses on research statistics and advanced research statistics but because I was studying Psychology and it is a social science my university only used IBM SPSS Statistics program for data analysis. Before starting my masters program I knew that I would like to take a couple of computer science/data analysis courses!

PYTHON

I started learning Python on my own last summer by taking the DataCamp Introduction to Python course, which is free on their website. Last August my masters program released an update that they are going to fund all of the DataCamp R and Python courses for us take at our own pace because previous students have complained that introductory programming courses were necessary for beginners.

I had already completed the first introduction course on DataCamp, so this past autumn I continued with Intermediate Python for Data Science and Python Data Science Toolbox (part 1) sections. I still have not finished the DataCamp Python for Data Science course and need to continue learning it during my free time on the weekends. These DataCamp courses are most suitable for me because they are specifically designed for data science.

MATLAB

Last semester I also signed up for an introductory course of MATLAB for neuroscience. It was quite different from what I was used to having completed a couple of courses for Python and it took me quite a long time to get used to programming in MATLAB. I also haven’t learned or used R because my undergraduate university used SPSS for data analysis and statistics and MATLAB is a lot easier to learn if you have experience with R. I still need to continue to practice my MATLAB programming skills because the course was only an introduction. I also need to learn R because it is actually most commonly used in neuroscience research.

MY THOUGHTS

I still suck at programming and need to put in a lot more hours of practice for both Python and MATLAB, as well as start learning another language of R. These skills are necessary for any type of scientific research and I think they will definitely prepare me for a competitive further postgraduate education or industry market.

However, I personally did not enjoy my MATLAB course when it was taught in person, as much as learning Python on my own, mostly because our final exam had to be handwritten code! I don’t understand why I have to memorise lines of code to be able to write it in the exam when the whole duration of the course they kept telling us to Google the information that we did not know. I also don’t like MATLAB as much because it keeps crashing on my MacBook (it’s definitely not suited for coding) and don’t even get me started on Psych Toolboxes. Also because I am not interest in EEG research and data analysis I might not need to use MATLAB as much.

Please keep in mind that my programming skills are still novel and I definitely need to continue working on it. I have a love/hate relationship with coding because it often sucks until your code works and then you feel like you can stop crying and programming more!

Some of my biggest inspiration to want to learn programming comes from these YouTube channels: Jarvis Johnson and he now has a second channel for coding Jarvis Johnson II and Devon Crawford. I also like Jake Wright. As for female coders I recommend checking out Mayuko

I hope you enjoyed this blog post and it cleared up the confusion as to why you need to learn programming for neuroscience! It’s a useful skill to have and I highly recommend everyone female and male to consider computer science as a potential university major! Data science is also pretty cool.

This is such a mood, my computer is pretty ok (runs my SolidWorks, Matlab simulations, PIV, etc all perfectly fine, 6th gen Core i7, 8gb ram...) and yet I still lag so badly when I open a page with SCM or Wikplayer on it lmao

Also, people like me probably have their own music playing when they’re browsing the internet and I’d rather listen to my own music, thanks.

Upset by Kaif’s picture, a few of his followers trolled him for allegedly defying the traditions of Islam. Previously, the 36-year-old has confronted criticism for taking part in chess, doing a Surya Namaskar and supporting the Triple Talaq verdict.
