This is a perfect short form KBL, an office set reunion romance featuring geeks that really suits 8 eps with no fluff and no chaff. Just comforting and yummy. I adored every aspect from the casting to the pristinely simple premise to the quietly smooth execution. Sure it’s low stakes, but that makes it high domesticity and extremely warm and gentle. This is a fuzzy blanket of a story - a cozy BL. It lives in my rewatch pile and you know what’s best about it? Every single episode is in that pile. There’s no skipping with this one, it might be good natured and calmly sweet but it’s tight and the pacing is excellent.

The most recent release on this list, it came out this year and I've already rewatched it 5x. I love this little show. It's a classic office BL about the older workaholic who loves his job and the younger upstart who unexpectedly loves his boss. It’s a hyung romance where everybody is extremely earnest and sweet and pretty about everything. Except our seme, who is slightly unhinged and a little obsessed in all the ways one likes best from Japan (if one is me). Plus the kisses are good! Utterly charming unexpected gem of a show. What fun!

Korea 2023 Viki

A delightful office romance about an ex-idol who joins cubical life only to find his new boss is his first love. Other boys are sniffing around too. Operative word being "sniffing" as much of this romance involves smell. With a snappy (sometimes even raunchy) script, enjoyable sides, a pretty as peaches cast, and decent chemistry this show made up for in style what it lacked in substance. I like fluff. I loved this. I smiled every moment I was watching. My only caution is this is for fans of the BL genre only, I don’t think it’ll work for anyone else.

This style of live action yaoi really only works from Japan. Basically: boys who fell in love in college end up living together but are so repressed they don't realize they're in love. It's higher heat than we usually get from Japan's HEA stuff, and that aspect is also very well done, but it leaned into the "why don't they just talk for fuck's sake?" trope which is only exacerbated into undiluted frustration by the fact that they're already fucking. It's great, but watching requires more patience than usual, even for Japan. That said it's also bruisingly romantic. Emphasis on bruise.

Unintentional Love Story

Korea 2023 iQIYI

OMG the plot! Uke forced into a totally understandable betrayal, falling in love despite himself, put into a corner he can't get out of, the AGONY, the PAIN in those gorgeous eyes. Gah. Okay, so: A boy loses his job due to trumped-up corruption charges accidentally discovers his ex-boss's favorite artist, now a recluse. Evil manager offers him his job back, if he can convince the artist to rejoin society. Instead, they fall in love. I found the artist a bit stiff and reserved but Gongchan (maknae of B1A4) is a fucking GIFT - he carried this show (which I do not expect from the idol element). He was luminous with extraordinarily expressive eyes, just drown in the emoting abyss. The external conflict, social tension and pressure is complex and beautifully executed, plus Korea gave us legit side dishes (NOT a love triangle, hally-fucking-luya). All that said, when I rewatch this it's usually just the second half, but WHAT a ride.

Semantic Error

Sexy older boy discovers pouty younger boy has outed him as a slacker, starts out bullying him, accidentally falls madly in love instead. Korea hits it entirely out of the Parks by doing a university BL with everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. Korea's signature quality executed perfectly with added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL. Another one where the rewatch is mostly just the second half.

Old Fashion Cupcake

Japan 2022

This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits. It’s about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said boss with pancakes. It’s wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. It’s a stunningly filmed late-in-life comg of age/queerness story packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity, love, and loneliness… and it’s beautiful.

Yes yes. But the bit you know you want to rewatch is that long shot with the bite kiss. YOU KNOW you wanna.

Seven Days

Ha! I faked you out 'cause this wasn't at the top but of course it's on the list! One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). Older boy dares the hot af younger one to date him for a week. Turns out they both like it... A lot. The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

Takara & Amagi

Japan 2022

I gnawed on my knuckles and squealed a lot with this show, but a rewatch is way less tense. Reserved cool kid must learn to communicate to keep the tiny disaster nugget he’s madly in love with. It is beyond charming: soft and gentle, packed with cuteness and high school angst, thirst, & yearning.

We Best Love

Taiwan 2021 WeTV

WBL successfully managed to pick up and combine the best features of Korean, Thai, and Japanese BL as it exists right now. Couple that to the insane chemistry from the leads, and we have one of the greatest BLs of all time, cooking to a recipe I doubt anyone else will ever be able to replicate since only Taiwan is this flexible. It's basically every classic BL trope bombarded at us in two parts, rapid fire, one after another. Rewatching this show reminds me of everything I love about this genre. It is the genre in pure concentrated form.

I think it's no accident that none of these are Thai, part of a rewatch for me is the brevity of the show, longer stuff does get rewatched, but not as frequently.

SVSSS is just such a goddamn goldmine for ships, it actually makes me a little feral.

First off is the main two, right? Except there's Bingge, Bingmei, Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu. There's like all different ships depending on which two (OR THREE) iterations are involved. (THIS IS SOME MIRACULOUS LADYBUG BULLSHIT ON CRACK.)

(1) Bingqiu or Shen Yuan x Bingmei, the main couple of SVSSS. They're such freak for freak. One faked their suicide the other one decided to keep the BODY from said suicide for five years??? So much is wrong with them and I love every bit of it.

(2) Shen Yuan x Bingge, usually in which Bingge finds a way to steal Shen Yuan from Bingmei or if Shen Yuan transmigrates into post-abyss LBH. The blue balls Shen Yuan would give that guy because he wouldn't have the pathetic begging dog energy Bingmei has and Shen Yuan would literally NEVER pick up that the stallion protagonist wants to fuck him.

(3) Bingjiu or Shen Jiu x Bingge, delicious toxic yaoi. The worst of the goddamn worst. Cycles of abuse except it's literally just them. When the ship is so broken you need to call in a construction crew. When they're fated but in the sense that they need to destroy each other.

(4) Shen Jiu x Bingmei, any fic where Shen Jiu treats LBH with a modicum of mercy or respect when he's still his disciple usually results in some version of Bingmei. The fluff is great, the breaking of the cycle. The ability to believe in happy endings for these two broken people.

(5) Shen Jiu x Shen Yuan, the amount of variations for this one is absurd. My personal favorites are transmigrated peak lord! Shen Yuan x Shen Jiu or reverse transmigrated! Shen Jiu x Shen Yuan. But there's so many ways to pair the gentleness of Shen Yuan with the thorniness of Shen Jiu.

(6) Bingge x Bingmei, so funny in concept but also, definitely selfcest. I think Bingge is narcissistic enough to fuck himself. It also fulfils my Bingmei gets topped agenda so really a win is a win.

(7) Shenbingshen or Shen Yuan x Bingmei x Shen Jiu, I think Bingmei deserves two shizuns for a treat! But yeah the idea that Bingmei falls for both shitty cold as hell tsundere Shen Jiu and his warm kind but secretly such a goddamn freak Shen Yuan is so golden and the way he would get so jealous of the way they would treat EACH OTHER.

(8) Bingqiubing or Bingge x Shen Yuan x Bingmei, this would be such a mess. This would trigger wars. This would be the greatest drama ever. Shen Yuan would be wife plot kidnapped every other week. Neither LBHs would let up. Maybe one day they'll learn to share lol.

Okay so those are all the Shen x Bing ships (that I know of), now let's add in Liu Qingge.

(9) Liushen or Liu Qingge x Shen Yuan, savior x devoted knight dynamic. The way Liu Qingge would be so confused over THE Shen Qingqiu being nice and smiley and the speed of which he would fall. The absolute confused thirst 'straight' Shen Yuan has over this gorgeous muscled warrior immortal who brings him monster carcasses. They're idiot x idiot and I love every bit of it.

(10) Liujiu or Liu Qingge x Shen Jiu in which Shen Jiu manages to save Liu Qingge. The doomed rivals to lovers energy from PIDW and the changing of their fate. The way Liu Qingge would be so horrified to find out about Shen Jiu's past. Good martial god dick could fix Shen Jiu, trust (not serious).

(11) Bingliu or Liu Qingge x Luo Binghe, the only universe I could imagine this happening is if Shen Yuan rejected them both (which would be so funny) or maybe they have an enemies to lovers arc during the 5 year period in with Shen Yuan is d e a d. As the two characters who were impacted the both by Shen Yuan's arrival (and death) it would be so interesting to watch them bond over that.

(12) Liubingshen or Liu Qingge x Luo Binghe x Shen Yuan, one of the peak poly ships in this fandom. It's just Bingliu but make it even better. The synergies of open and vulnerable Bingmei x his secretive Shizun and emotionally stunted Shishu at once is just so good.

And of course who can forget poor long divorced Yue Qingyuan.

(13) Qijiu or Yue Qingyuan x Shen Jiu, the ship that invented divorce. The misunderstandings between them are wide as an ocean. The things Yue Qingyuan lets Shen Jiu get away with because of his never-ending guilt and his refusal to actually communicate. When the silence between two people stretches so far and so long that it borders on unfixable. The doomed nature at the end of their lives in PIDW. Amazing ship.

(14) Yue Qingyuan x Shen Yuan, it's such a horror situation. The (divorced) love of his life is replaced by this kinder, gentler version. A version that smiles at him and forgives him, but also doesn't know, doesn't remember. The worst part is YQY potentially favoring this version of SQQ and feeling so much guilt over it, and still falling anyway.

(15) Yue Qingyuan x Shen Jiu x Shen Yuan, aka having a third party come in and marriage counsellor YQY and SJ. They could be really funny, I think. I especially love the concept of YQY and SJ already being a thing and begging Shen Yuan to be their third only for Shen Yuan to do his usual mental filter things.

(16) Yue Qingyuan x Shen Jiu x Liu Qingge, I just think the idea of Shen Jiu reconciling with two people who he's been nothing but awful to as a disciple would be neat. Not to mention, I like the concept of YQY and LQG having to work together during the Qiu Haitang-water prison arc to fight for his reputation against Bingge.

And of course there's the glorious Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky.

(17) Cumplane or Shen Yuan x Shang Qinghua, the true soulmates of the SVSSS world. Author x the guy who hate-read your novel so hard he literally died over it. In literally any other media, being the only two transmigrated people in a novel would be grounds to get together. They are so goddamn funny.

(18) Shen Jiu x Shang Qinghua, the tortured scum villain x the author who wrote his complexity out of the story. Imagine Shen Jiu meeting the guy who literally knows everything about him against his will, who twisted his fate and portrayal in the novel to survive in the real world. Imagine Shang Qinghua realizing things about his creation that he forgot/didn't even know about. There is so much potential here.

(19) Shen Jiu x OG! Shang Qinghua, which is just so fascinating as a villain x villain ship from PIDW. The traitorous Shang Qinghua gets his ass saved by shitty and cold as hell Shen Jiu who sees a man who reflects himself in terms of being scum. They would be so awful but they could be awful together.

(20) Moshang or Mobei-jun x Shang Qinghua, creator x literal manifestation of his ideal man. It's so cracked and sosososo good. Shang Qinghua perfected the art of being so pathetic he gets picked up by this demon king and he doesn't even know that's the effect he's having on Mobei-jun.

These are all the ships I know and like the idea of. I know there's more out there, but my brain can really only hold so many at once without overloading and dying. I love SVSSS for being so goddamn chaotic with the possible pairings as well as the endless possibilities within each of them. Most of these ships deserve separate posts of their own but I digress.

I have been mimicking Xia Fei's 'laoban!' for 5 minutes straight lmao. The way Vein looked back and we see a teared up Xia Fei... Ugh that's so nyaka of him tbh. Like a spoiled little wife, precious damsel in distress crying in relief when his husband/saviour arrives (btw when I refer Xia Fei as 'wife' and Vein as 'husband', I do not imply any kind of comphet homophobic standards, some classic/popular culture tropes just fits very well)

Lu Guang is behind Cheng Xiaoshi cause he is scared as fuck and his cat eyes are posing a threat "come near me and I'll scratch your face!" Myriad of emotions, though completely polar opposite to each other, are painted on lg and xf's faces while Cheng Xiaoshi is standing there with his signature : head emptu no thot style.

But the first shot of Vein made him look much younger actually. My red hot pookie 🎀. I need his eyeliner tutorial tho.

his character pv bloody storm continually asserts that whatever he does, he does with dignity. He may be evil but not machiavellian, that's Liu Xiao's department. And idk my *heart* says to me, he is not cruel, abusive and manipulative towards Xia Fei. He genuinely cares about him. There may be other reasons Xia Fei is important to the plot but Vein has a soft corner for him. It's a very irrational but strong innate voice that's telling me to have faith in my veifei and I will.

Actually, I have very few ships I am actually invested in. and crazy like this. I love reading different permutations and combinations of ships but I never emotionally invest. Johnlock, Wangxian, Shiguang...these are the only ships I am devoted to. But their own interpersonal relationships come from a...what should I say, 'clean' and 'innocent' and 'pure' background. It's the society and fate that brings chaos to their relationship. But Veifei is different. But I ship them with no less passion.

To celebrate a year of being a danmei blog, I’ve decided to share my personal ranking of danmei I’ve read sharing what’s good, what’s not, it’s ability to peddle smut and who I’d recommend it to. I’m going in descending order for added tension 😉

12) Scum Villain’s Self Saving System

Pros: Conceptually, I dig it. Do I wish Airplane was the MC - yes. Do I wish that Airplane and Shen Yuan banged - yes. If that happened would I have finished - probably.

Cons: Luo Binghe is not my Shizun fucker! Currently, it’s the only danmei I’ve dropped. It’s kind of boring and being a transmigration into a novel, it’s hard to care about any of the characters because they’re not real? Also if you’ve read a lot of bl Shen Yuan’s ‘I’m not gay’ trope has definitely been done better elsewhere.

Smut peddler rating: I dropped it before I got to the good part, but if mdzs is any kind of marker - I’ll grade it unsexy but present.

Recommended for: Transmigration fans. Maybe?

11) Heaven Official’s Blessing

Pros: It’s honestly the ultimate gateway drug into danmei, its donghua is on point and it’s super accessible. It’s got some solid side characters and I did really enjoy some of the volumes. I read all of the extras.

Cons: Some of the volumes are an absolute slog to get through. I honestly think it’s way too long. The way it’s written is very caperlike which I think damages the cohesion a bit. It’s almost like a series of related short stories.

Smut peddler rating: censorship got this one, but it still manages to have its horny moments. You’ll never look at dice the same.

Recommended for: fans of fluff and workplace shenanigans.

10) Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation

Pros: gateway drug into

Cons: You need to read this early in your danmei journey otherwise the politics won’t hit. Mxtx plays with a lot of fun tropes here, but when you start reading more widely, they’re definitely done better elsewhere.

Smut peddler rating: Poor. Lan Wangji does not believe in foreplay and lube is a myth in the cloud recesses.

Recommended for: fans of courtly drama.

9) Lip and Sword

Pros: Toxic Workplace Yaoi in my danmei! With regular smut (the word cock has never been used so much!) Lip and Sword is vibes. The television studio was a novel setting and the toxicity was on point.

Cons: No shade to Via Lactea, but the editing in this is not good and over time that can become jarring. Also I feel like the big mystery element kind of fell apart at the end. I suppose the whole thing is about corruption but the pay off didn’t feel very satisfying.

Smut peddler rating: These boys be descriptive fucking every other chapter. It’s just a shame the grammar is not supporting their shenanigans.

Recommended for: longtime fans of toxic yaoi, salaryman flavoured bl and general workplace fuckery. It’s boku no sh does monogamy.

8) To Rule in a Turbulent World

Pros: You Miao is the funniest bitch I know and I will always champion Fei Tian Ye Xiang. The politics are very present. Zhao Chao is also one of my favourite side characters. I adore him.

Cons: Li Zhifeng is honestly so dull to me as a LI. Also suffers from being a Via Lactea production.

Smut peddler rating: Chapter 3 is famous in the danmei community for a reason. A whole chapter dedicated to explicit sex with a little sprinkling of kink. Also skinship in this novel is off the scale. Sexual tension didn’t bother to show up though. Very established relationship from the start.

Recommended for: fans of Ballad of Sword and Wine. You like reading about the dramas of grain - have more! Also Remnants of Filth - more of that young master/slave dynamic.

7) Remnants of Filth

Pros: ALL OF THE ANGST! Also it feature shady bitch Murong Lian. Early on it has some solid plot twists and Mo Xi is the ultimate danmei sad boy if you’re into that sort of thing.

Cons: If it’s not your first Meatbun it will feel tame. Also I found that I just stopped caring from vol 6 onwards. It’s well known that this isn’t the story Meatbun wanted to write and I think you feel that once you hit a certain point. She just stops caring and plot points and tropes are thrown into the void and I just know she could do better.

Smut peddler rating: It’s there but it definitely feels like Meatbun’s weakest work. But for fans of the omegaverse please note that Gu Mang has a self lubricating hole and that will never not be iconic.

Recommended for: Chengxian shippers. Mo Xi is Jiang Cheng with main character energy. Becoming sort of a demonic cultivator I guess makes Gu Mang Wei Wuxian.

6) Ballad of Sword and Wine

Pros: Cezhou are everything! When things are delivering in Qjj the world is your oyster - the eunuchs are eunuching, the gays are fucking, donkeys are getting murdered for sport. It’s giving Game of Thrones when it was still good minus the dragons in Ancient China. What’s not to like?

Cons: Why are there so many side characters? Also the politics do ride on heavy. You will absolutely forget who people are and if you’re along for the Cezhou ride, be prepared to go off on tangents about grain.

Smut peddler rating: Genius. Censorship took out some of the fun but Cezhou are definitely speedrunning every kink. Between foot jobs, fucking on a horse and Shen Zechuan Calling Xiao Chiye daddy, bl fans are well fed with this one.

Recommended for: Fans of Captive Prince, anyone who wishes Jin Guangyao was the main character and people who really love reading about grain.

5) Guardian

Pros: Has a talking cat, the yearning and the longing is so high. Zhao Yunlan gets blue balled so hard he comes out to his mother. Shen Wei is such a delicious character. The side characters are all well fleshed out and adorable. It’s sort of fluffy work place yaoi, but with a constant sense of impending doom.

Cons: You will probably get lost with what the fuck is going on at some point.

4) Riverbay Road Men’s Dormitory

Pros: I adore literally everyone in this book. I’m invested in everyone’s love lives and the slice of life aspect never gets boring because these fuckers are all shady bitches. There’s also an element of realism

Cons: Huo Sichen is king of dull as a LI. This seems to be a bit of a Fei Tian issue. Guess he’s just too good at writing side characters.

Smut peddler rating: High! It’s Fei Tian after all. I’ve never been so emotionally invested in mutual masturbation and someone definitely fucks a pillow. Post nut clarity is a sentence you will read too many times.

Recommended for: Slice of life fans and those who want more modern danmei.

3) Case File Compendium

Pros: Meatbun is living her best life with this one. He Yu is an obsessive theatre kid with mummy issues and I love him to the moon and back. Xie Qingcheng is rocking that repressed sad boy energy I cannot say no to. It’s unhinged. Embrace the chaos. There’s something really nostalgic about Case File Compendium if you are a long term bl fan.

Cons: The first volume is diabolical.

Smut peddler rating: Meatbun went to town with this one. Non con at an all time high. Nostalgic for long term fans of bl.

Recommended for: fans of toxic yaoi. It’s basically a modern au of the Husky and his White Cat Shizun. Apparently there’s a Sci-Fi element that I live in fear of.

2) The Husky and his White Cat Shizun

Pros: Mo Ran and Chu Wanning are everything to me. It’s absolutely hilarious and the mix of fluff and angst is just right.

Cons: I feel like the toxic yaoi is underutilised. The evil timeline is so good but there’s also an element of it not counting which as a fan of villainy makes me a bit sad. Also I don’t have a lot of faith in Meatbun being able to stick a landing.

Smut peddler rating: High. If you liked Wei Wuxian fucking a sword in his dreams - Chu Wanning will raise you a candlestick in real life. Meatbun really buys into foreplay as well. That she went with intercrural sex for Ranwan’s first time will never not blow my mind.

Recommended for: fans of bl who want to branch out into danmei.

1) Legend of Exorcism

Pros: It’s basically a gay fantasy RPG. There’s a nice sprinkling of angst throughout. Li Jinglong is an absolute diamond. He’s saved Fei Tian’s LI’s for me. The amount of questing going on here is so pleasing. Everyone’s dynamics are so enjoyable and like with all Fei Tian novels, gay characters acknowledge that they are attracted to men. There’s no gay for you nonsense going on here.

Cons: It is threatening on becoming a slow burn.

Smut peddler rating: 0 so far, but there’s been a lot of erections. Also, it’s Fei Tian and I believe in him. Li Jinglong is just waiting to destroy someone and Kong Hongjun is begging to be railed. When these two finally get their shit together the result is going to be pure debauchery and I am here for it.

Recommended for: Everyone.

In their pursuit to create a new classic in the speedrun FPS genre, Strange Scaffold unintentionally wrote one of the greatest yaoi love stories to date.

I Am Your Beast is a high-octane, stylistic shooter reminiscent of Neon White and Hotline Miami. It uses a throw-and-swap gameplay style that keeps the action moving at a breakneck pace from start to finish. After taking out an enemy, you can pick up their weapon and throw it at any point to stun another enemy. This core concept is pushed to its limits near the end, where players may perform a sequence like leaping down from above for a drop takedown, picking up that soldiers knife, throwing it at an explosive barrel to take out a squad, catching one of their guns mid-air, and headshotting the last grunt. It’s moments like these where I Am Your Beast truly shines. Most of the 37 levels are time-attack challenges, with a few miscellaneous levels mixed in. While none of these misc levels felt like a chore, they never quite reached the excitement of chasing those time-attack S-ranks. One of the most underrated aspects of this game, which I haven’t heard enough praise for, is its unique scoring system. In most games, the fastest way to beat a level is to run straight to the end, ignoring all the enemies. But in IAYB, there’s a countdown timer that starts at S rank and decreases to A, B, C, and so on. If you run past all the enemies to reach the end of the level, it’s impossible to meet the time requirement for an S-rank. However, you can subtract time from your score by defeating enemies in specific ways—the more stylish, the greater the time bonus. By requiring players to earn time bonuses through stylish play, the game makes combat feel both rewarding and essential, rather than something to bypass. Achieving S-ranks demands this approach, and you can even gain such a large time bonus that your score turns negative. Grinding for these negative scores is where most of the replay value comes from, especially considering Strange Scaffold made the baffling decision not to include a leaderboard in their time-attack game.

The story follows a standard plot— a retired hitman is called out of retirement for one last job. It’s nothing to write home about, but the charming characters and unique presentation made it enjoyable enough to keep me interested in seeing where the story goes.

The last thing of note is the blood-pumping soundtrack by RJ Lake. The heavy bass of the OST blasting through my ears kept me going as I flew through levels, resetting over and over to shave seconds off my time. The soundtrack washes over you until you’re no longer conscious of your actions, moving purely on instinct.

The BangkokBoy (Sat Gaga) ep 5 of 12 - Stop him from suicide, get his digits, have him help you out with a fist fight saving your sister from human trafficking. As you do. BDE first date, I guess. Honestly, I get where this show is going in the gritty realism department but it's greedy and clumsy in that area and not working great for me so far. However, the tension around that dinner table was aces.

Sweet Tooth Good Dentist (Fri iQIYI) ep 9 of 12 - Omg Jay knew Sant would be a great bf, and he really is. I love how verse these two are.

The Ex-Morning (Thurs YT) ep 1 of 10 - I’m liking it more than I expected to. I actually like a reunion romance, and this is a different setting and an interesting premise. It’s something we’ve not seen at all before in BL. So I’m intrigued. Krist does seem to play exactly the same character in every BL tho.

I Promise I Will Come Back (Mon WeTV) ep 1 of 10 - It's pretty, but a bit slow. The subs are truly terrible. I’m grateful I know enough Thai to understand what is actually being said. But if you don’t, I'm not sure if this one will make sense. It’s one of those classic travel pulps that we get from Thailand, except the acting is above expectations. And the talent pool is different. I don’t know where I’m landing on this one.

Loy Kaew First Love (Fri YT) ep 2 of 6 - Well this certainly is action heavy. A lot of stuff happened. I’m a little confused by all the different characters but OK I guess? 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Sweetheart Service (Korea Fri YT) ep 3 of 12 - I unabashedly love this little charmer of a show. Sugar daddy kitty shopping + language negotiation = fantastic.

Fight for You (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 10 of 12 - They are separated so at least some movement and action is happening. But also they are both sadsack tiny idiots. BUT they got an incredibly sweet reunion sequence. I have to say, Taiwan is really showing us how to execute chemistry, it is their crown and they wear it beautifully.

On a totally different note, I like that the brothers (cousins?) in this show all do actually look like they could be blood related to each other for a change.

Moon and Dust (China YT) ep 1 of 6 - Yet another instance of can China get away with it? And even if they do, are they gonna end up happily? Probably not. But this is just cheesy enough for me to watch it without getting too involved and therefore I think I’m gonna be OK no matter what happens in the end.

So, premise?

Creepy younger brother obsessed with older (blood related? maybe even that) brother. Baby boy is ALSO fiercely aggressively unhinged and likely a morality chain just waiting to snap. So... lucky me? It's like Tumblr and BL had a baby. Gay dumpser fires all round!

It's airing but......

Sashes and Hearts (Pinoy YT) 13 eps - Philippines is doing Drop Dead Gorgeous only all gay boys queening their asses off. Doesn't interest me, not sure if it's BL. Finished its run, my opinion remains unchanged, thus I will not be watching. DNF.

Season of Love in Shimane AKA Ai no Kisetsu: The Season of Love (Thai) - Sequel to Kiseki Chapter 2 which I intensely disliked. I won't watch this.

Dramas Recap - 2024

It’s the beginning of a new year and I have definitely been in a multi-year drama slump so I figured I’d do a little dramas state-of-the-union. I don’t know that I’m really up for full reviews of things I’ve watched over the last couple years but I can share a few thoughts on what I’ve seen and what I am currently watching with a list of things I intend to watch and why.

Completed Dramas

Happy Ending Romance (2022, Korea) - Continue to be mostly unfulfilled by KBL. Watched for Leo, he was great but otherwise disappointed by weak/ nonsensical writing. 1.5/10

Moonlight Chicken (2023, Thailand) - P’Aof, however, continues to not disappoint. Poignant and meaningful, only hampered by the fact I could not believe Earth was a man in his 30s/40s despite how hard he tried. 8.5/10

Semantic Error (2022, Korea) - Cute. Deserving of the hype. I am just bored that so many queer stories focus only on college/high school. 8/10

Curtain Call (2022, Korea) - Sad I disliked this one because I do so adore both Ha Ji Won and Kang Ha Neul but I really hate lying For Reasons storylines especially when they drag out tortuously to meet an episode count. 6.5/10

Taxi Driver (2021, Korea) - Really enjoyed the found family cast, disliked that it felt the creative team didn’t trust their audience so felt talked down to a lot. Minor plot holes/ inconsistencies in writing undermined what could have been a truly stellar show. Maybe I’ll get around to watching season 2. 7.5/10

The New Employee (2022, Korea) - Cute. Forgettable - in that I don’t remember anything about it now a year out. 8/10

Only Friends (2023, Thailand) - A mess of a show rendered annoying by the truly bottom tier of discourse it generated. Worth it for FirstKhao, though, despite weak and frustrating writing. 7/10

The Eighth Sense (2023, Korea) - Ok I suspend my feelings on KBLs for this show because it was actually fantastic (minorly annoying plot points notwithstanding). I found this swoony and moving. 9/10

My Sweet Mobster (2024, Korea)- One of the few standouts of the last couple years. It felt like a throwback to an early 2010s drama in a good way. Familiar and comforting but with a lovable cast and standout leads. 8/10

Love in the Big City (2024, Korea) - One of the shows where I feel the distinction between BL and Queer Media may be pedantic but relevant. Amazing and moving show full of things I crave: powerful and memorable characters with solid writing. Heartily recommend. 9/10

Good Manager (2017, Korea) - Again a bit of a throwback feel hampered a bit, imo, by uneven writing for the male lead that always fell just shy of truly good to land with me. A bit of tsundere bromance in our male leads made up for it, though. 8.5/10

Lovely Runner (2024, Korea) - Again a fantastic throwback of a show with vibes of School 2015. Loved the twists and turns of time travel and the supporting cast. The chemistry of the leads was solid. A standout in a few otherwise lackluster years. 9/10

Rewatches

Cruel City (2013, Korea) - Still, in my opinion, one of the best KDramas, hands down. A little silly with the plot convolutions but Jung Kyung Ho’s portrayal of Doctor’s Son remains raw and haunting. His dysfunctional crime family still live vibrant in my heart. 10/10

My Father is Strange (2017, Korea) - A perennial comfort watch that remains one of the best crafted shows I’ve seen with one of the best redemptions stories in all of media - and I don’t say that lightly. Full of lovable characters that basically give me 4 romcoms in one. 10/10

Completed Movies

Hidden Blade (2023, China) - Tony Leuhng and Wang Yibo? Yes, absolutely. Never rose above the sum of its parts but was riveting none-the-less 9/10

Method (2017, Korea) - The toxic old man yaoi that keeps the constitution strong. 8/10

Marry My Dead Body (2022, Taiwan) - Absolutely fantastic, excellent time had by all, with good rewatch value. The queer buddy cop comedy we all deserve. 8/10

Dropped

Reborn Rich (2022, Korea) - Just got bored and I’ve never been enough of a Song Joong Ki fangirl for him to carry a show for me.

War of Y (2022, Thailand) - Def. Understand why this is an important show for BL lovers, just struggled connecting with any of the characters enough to care about watching more.

Kokdu: Season of Deity (2023, Korea) - Really wanted to like this one because I enjoy Kim Jung Hyun and wanted him to be good coming back from his ‘scandal’. It just felt like the Wish version of better shows like Goblin or My Love from the Star.

Ameiro Paradox (2022, Japan) - Just kept forgetting to watch more episodes then gave up. Obviously just wasn’t compelled enough.

Cherry Magic (2023, Thailand) - Might have kept up with this if its production company hadn’t gone all fucky with international access. Not sure if its available now, didn’t care enough about the little I did see to bother checking.

4Minutes (2024, Thailand) - This is all down to weak writing. I found myself yelling in annoyance at the screen more than enjoying anything about it. It’s ok, Bible, I still love you.

Century of Love (2024, Thailand) - Somehow the writer just didn’t know how to make enjoyable characters despite having all the right archetypes. Found one of the male leads so one note and flat I couldn’t keep watching.

Ok now on to the things I am looking forward to watching:

Stranger Season 2 (2020, Korea) - (for itself but also because they gave Prosecutor Seo, my favorite terrible cockroach, his own show)

Adventure Behind the Bronze Door (2024, China) - My life has been distinctly lackluster since I’ve had a DMBJ vehicle in my life

A Shop for Killers (2024, Korea) - Will not lie, this is 100% because Primary did the soundtrack and I love it.

Bad and Crazy (2021, Korea) - Absolutely for Lee Dong Wook and N

Guardians of the Dafeng (2024, China) - Dylan Wang. Enough said.

Fangs of Fortune (2024, China) - I have Heard Things

Wind Master, how I love you. His naivety is the greatest thing about tgcf. Instantly quotable ray of sunshine that deserved an ending where he doesn't die of old age.

I slept on Mu Qing and then I saw the error of my ways. In this house we love and support a shameless social climber with repressed emotions.

7) Jun Wu

His obsession with Xie Lian feeds my appreciation of toxi yaoi.

8) Feng Xin

I loved him when I thought he was in love with Xie Lian. The fetus spirit stole his shine and gave it to Mu Qing.

9) Quan Yizhen

His bromance with Xie Lian is cute and Hua Cheng's antagonism of him is hilarious in hindsight.

10) Yin Yu

Still mad he wasn't He Xuan in disguise. Xie Lian's response to his average looks makes his appearances worthwhile.

11) Shi Wudu

Blackwater was fun. He feels more like plot devices than a character in his own rights to me.

I am at a grand total of... 119,898 words. Holy cow! I'm willing to bet most of that came from AHC.

Whatever piece of media I'm hyperfixating on at that point in time, though I do try to keep myself from writing too many multi-chapters. My main fandoms are Bleach, Fairy Tail, and Jujutsu Kaisen with what I write though I do plan on writing some stuff for NNT and Hellsing.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. There are times where I can't figure out how to respond to a comment to I just kinda leave it be. Other times, I could respond because I want to know the audience's thoughts on a chapter or they mention liking this or that and I want to know why. To me, what helps improve writing is understanding not only how something works but why it works. For example, why do so many people like my characterization of Aizen in A Hollow Crown? What about his characterization makes people like him? Or I go to the comments when I need ideas and running around in my own head doesn't do the trick. Hell, I'll even leave it in the author's notes if I'm having trouble with a plot point and could use some audience feedback.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I'd say Ich bin verlore since it was a one-shot about longing for something you'd never have and wondering if what you did have was the real thing or not. Also, it's a Berserk fic so angst is inevitable.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

If we only include multi-chapters, then it could only go to A Hollow Crown since it's my only completed multichapter. And I'd say is a quiet sort of happiness, setting up for events to come and giving some characters a sense of hope. If we include one-shots, then I'd give that one to Dear God since it's an ending on a hopeful note where things can only really go up.

8. Do you get any hate on fics?

Nope! Hasn't happened to me.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

It's all yaoi smut. I tend to keep things from going into dub-con territory as smut where the consent isn't exactly clear is a squick for me. Any smut I write is between two or more adults, as I find writing smut of underage characters to be... ew.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I plan to write some. I've got an NNT x TOH fic I'm debating writing, one that's a big ol' fandom crossover inspired by Fear and Hunger 2: Termina. Another one I have in mind to write is this Bleach x Seven Deadly Sins that's moreso the world of NNT with the characters of Bleach (like pencil's Genshin x NNT fic).

No, though I'd love to take a crack at translating my own fics. Gotta get in that translation practice somehow!

I do have a lot of ships, but I wouldn't quite say I have a favorite. I've written the most for AiIchi but I'd love to write for some others. Also, I'm someone who is more on board for found family fics or fics just focusing on the bonds between people.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Someday, I will return to my WIPs and finish them! Or I'd like to. To be honest, I have sooo many in my head that I need to put to paper.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'd say character analysis. Several people have said that I'm good at breaking down a character and seeing what makes them work and then putting them into a fic.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

This is more of a personal nitpick with myself, but I feel like I struggle with making my chapters long enough. How do I get myself to write longer chapters? I wanna write longer chapters, dammit.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

You're asking this from the world languages major! I love adding that in... well, when it makes sense. If I can use it to add some spice to a character or give hints about them *cough* AHC!Grimmjow *cough* then I'll go right ahead. Ya just need to do it in a way that makes sense both in and out of the story to where readers can get the gist of it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Fairy Tail! Demons x Dragonslayers is my oldest fic and first wrote it on Wattpad but started its rewrite on when I started cross-posting it on AO3.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

It'd have to be A Hollow Crown and by extension its series Hollow Moon . Yes, DxD is what started my fanfic journey but it was A Hollow Crown that really kicked it off. It also started my obsession of 'what if Aizen but good but he was still Aizen'.

1. It brought me joy and fandom and friendship again and made me feel like myself after a very long time. I know the narrative can be traumatic but it also has these incredible moments that just feel you with awe (like Todo turning up to help Yuji fight or seeing Gojo do hollow purple for the first time) it just reminded me of everything I love about anime.

2. My first real fandom, the first thing I wrote proper fanfiction for. The lore and the music and the animation just amazed me when I saw it when I was 11 and I've not been happy with decisions they've made recently (overpriced merch in a cost of living crisis, NFTs to celebrate Plastic Beach?!?) I'll still always love them and be excited for new content.

3. First anime love, first time seeing a relationship with two women helping me to identify as bi (now I'd say pan) I grew up believing that to be a strong woman you had to disregard femininity and seeing Usagi be the strongest with her bunny drawings and her focus on friendship and love just rewired my brain.

4. I love horror, I was brought up with it but for a very long time nothing has scared me and I found horror media repetitive. Outlast genuinely scared me and I was SO happy and I love reading the character notes and comics.

5. I've talked about this series a bunch but A Marvellous Light was the first book I'd read in years that made me cry and just stayed in my head for ages. Everything I'd loved about harry potter but done properly.

6. I was at a sleepover at a friend's and someone stuck this on and everyone was talking and I was just glued to the screen because what the FUCK WAS THIS?!?!? I've watched it since with my husband and it still hits me so hard every time. It's such a powerful portrayal of depression and nihilism and how relationships can fuck you up. It's beautiful and I think it's one of the best anime's of all time.

7. The opposite of neon Genesis lol. Love and family and forgiveness and what it means to sacrifice for the people you care about. Devoured brotherhood with my husband and we were both in tears by the end of it. I'd also been told I couldn't have kids and we had struggled with a miscarriage and Izumi and Sig just hit me so hard. (I have a bub now tho it came out ok in the end) but the characters still feel so real and there's so many amazing moments.

8. I listened to all of this and played Minecraft with my husband till like 6 am on weekends. We would discuss at length our theories and it just holds a special place in my heart. It's perfect horror and John and Martin's relationship just means a lot to me. I related a LOT to Martin and loved the series and I've super been enjoying the Magnus Protocol too! Also that first fucking recording of Nikola Orsinov?!?!? We both sat still staring at each other genuinely freaked the fuck out and we still quote it at each other! "I mean, you can if you really want to, but you’re not going to like it." CHILLS EVERY FUCKING TIME!!!

9. I read a lot of BL manga with my friends (*old lady voice* back in my day we called it Yaoi!!!) And so many of them had terrible tropes and big hands. This was the first one I ever read that I still adore that had an amazing love story and plot. It was revolutionary to see an LGBTQ story not just about them being gay or coming out but it had real detective cases and murders etc and I still wish we could get a tv show of it.

10. When Gojo talked about Digimon I fell even further in love. It's the fucking best. I wanted to be Mimi so BAD as a kid my mum made me a Halloween costume of her and I thought I was so cool. My next tattoo is gonna be Lilymon. I grew up with it in the dub and it established my sense of humour for better or worse. The Digimon film is still my comfort film of choice. Matt was such a big crush I had when I was little and I wrote little stories about being one of the digidestined.

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

I think it's an easy answer to say Peter Parker but objectively, the majority of the fandom has a very fanon collective idea about who he is/what role he feels in a narrative that makes it feel like there are two distinct Peters that are running around in the tag. (Which is interesting, because Wade's character I think is pretty consistently written - the level of nuance differs, but the core of him is there, and I think it's because he's baseline a pretty easy character to understand while Peter is not since who he says he is/who he is contrats)

It's obviously mostly because comic canon + the three movie canons do not line up well the more recent they are, and the most recent converts are people who got into the TH movies, which are probably the least accurate/worst representation of Peter as a character. I think that writing him as a nice, sweetheart, infantile twink definitely fulfills a very classic yaoi fantasy and I understand why it exists, but at that point it's so disconnected from source it feels like a wade wilson/oc work that's been telephoned across the expanse of the fandom degrading Peter's core character further with every new iteration.

9. worst part of canon

I've said this once, I've said this a thousand times, but the ableism that exists within the comic universe to the degree that everyone that sees Wade and his scars reacts like it's the worst thing they've ever seen is not only unrealistic but also weird in canon context.

1) this is a world that has mutants, aliens, and meta-species and many canon characters have mutations or species traits that go outside the norm and they don't receive the same level of universal disgust

2) disability education! mutant rights are marvel's talking point for real world racism/ableism so why can mutants who are made of stone get humane treatment from fellow mutants but wade...does not? it's weird? it doesn't make any sense?

3) he literally does not look that bad (this is depending on author/artist. I saw someone say once that there are three Wades, horror Wade, action Wade, and romance Wade and depending on the comic plot line, his scars get worse to better respectively.) As someone who writes for this fandom I can confirm that there are many people who are attracted to Wade Wilson lol. It just does not. Make. Sense. To. Me. It's just ableism, plain and simple.

It just really bothers me. I really think comics are so based on conventional standards (I.E. every superhero is traditionally beautiful, body diversity doesn't exist, etc.) that when a character like Wade exists who is not conventional but still fits the body standards + the base of G.I. Joe it just doesn't make sense that he would receive the level of blatant ableism from every person he ever interacts with. I think he would get more! Is it what I'm saying.

10. worst part of fanon

I mean, where do we really start. (It's the babygirlification of Wade Wilson) it makes writing any level of nuance in their relationship very one-sided because you know the fans will literally agree with anything Wade does and contrast it with degrading and dehumanizing anything Peter does. Wade's actions are always justifiable because (vague hand wave in the direction of the babygirlification of serial killers) I think it bothers me so much because there are two people in this relationship and one of them is a canonical serial killer and one of them is a weird guy with a bad personality. I think they both suck, but if only one of them gets flack then it really makes the entire concept of them profoundly unfun.

Notes: It is a fanfiction about child leukaemia and the struggles of a single mother (per say) so I advise you to not read it if you have a cancer (of any type or form) trigger.

THE PLOT: I believe this is one of the best plots I have seen in awhile, the premise is good but I jumped straight to the third chapter (because I - personally - am not a very patient person to read long foreplay scenes until we get to the part where the story gets going). It has a traditional plot and doesn't have a huge climax built around the main, child, character. It might feel a little numb if you are into heart wrecking plot twists.

REVIEW: ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (8/10).

GRAMMAR & COHESION: It is a very coherent story, although some parts we feel like missing something because the story's pace is a fast type. I can't tell for certain if the author's first language is English but based on my own "English is not my first language" writing, I think they might be, for some errors I still make even nowadays.

REVIEW: ☆☆☆☆☆☆ (6/10).

FORMATTING: Even if the grammar might be a little out of place, the story is well formatted, the paragraphs well defined and DEFINITELY a YES if you love stories where there are little to no massive paragraphs with direct dialogue mixed into it. Everything is well separated and easy to read.

REVIEW: ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (9/10).

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: Do you know what is rarer than dancing with a watermelon in you head? Finding a story where Mikoto is the bitch and Fugaku is a good father; now this is the one in a million finding I intend to keep close to my heart. After everything Mikoto also had a redemption of sorts, even though it isn't explicitly showed + the conflict of Naruto's lost making him be thoughtful of Mikoto even when she is putting him through hell hit too close to home for me lol.
