ellie always loved your aesthetic. she would go shopping with you, staring at all the typical goth clothes you buy in admiration. even though she wasn't goth herself, she enjoyed seeing how happy it made you, and the confidence it gave you. she'd often complement you on how the style suits you, and tell you how cool and unique you are.

she always stared at you while you were doing your daily make-up. she made sure you know you look pretty without it but she knew how comfortable doing it makes you feel, so she didn't complain. in her opinion, you looked beautiful both ways. she loved the way you tried out new makeup looks, and would ask questions about the trends and what each product does. she thought it was cute - the way you would watch makeup tutorials and take notes, and would sometimes watch them with you. she didn't really understand it, still couldn't help but be curious like a little kid. for her, your basic skills were unbelievable. she'd act like you just turned the house upside down after you made the simplest eyeliner ever that she would easily do too if only she tried.

you scoff as you roll your eyes, snatching the joint from her fingers. “no i’m pretty sure it was you who kissed me.” you inhale slowly, maintaining eye contact with the freckled girl in front of you. something strange was in her eyes, an unusual type of shimmer within the emerald rings you’d never seen before in all your time knowing her. it was teasing, yet subtle, like whatever she was thinking was too shy to come out. 

when you exhale, your mind is fuzzy, and you’re feeling too floaty to notice that this time, she watches the smoke escape from your lips. your lips, the ones her eyes linger on for a little longer than they should. 

“okay, but, there were a lotta people at that party y’know. did i really kiss you?”

ellie watches the way your lips upturn into a grin and only looks back up to your eyes when you nudge her arm playfully. she chuckles as she leans back from the action but mostly at the way she can hear the obvious annoyance in your voice. “ellie! are you actually serious right now?” 

“just sayin’,” she shrugs and tries to hide her smile by taking another hit. this time the hit is longer than usual, and there’s a brief moment of silence before she exhales the smoke away from your face.

“you seriously don’t remember?” you ask, a hint of disappointment in your tone. that kiss was all you could think about, and if she really didn’t remember you’d feel dumb for getting this far into the conversation. ellie was aware of this, feeling a little guilty for playing dumb. of course she remembered that kiss, kissing you, all of it. you had no idea how long she had been waiting to kiss you, after what seemed like an eternity of lighthearted flirting and small teasing touches. trying to strictly stay as ‘friends’. even though both of you were highly intoxicated last night, she still enjoyed it just as much. but it was fun messing with you, so she’d hold this one out for a little longer. 

ellie shrugs. “i dunno… i mean, last night was a blur.”

you frown, suddenly feeling embarrassed. your eyes meet the ground again as you pick at your nail. “oh. well, okay.”

“hey, come on, stop that. i just… need a little more help remembering.” ellie chuckles, and she knows she shouldn’t be since you’re upset, but that wouldn’t last long anyway. she shuffles in her spot, reaching to the table nearby as she stubs out the joint. 

you sit up straighter, eyes flickering to hers quickly as you smile. “oh really? how?”

“well, y’know,” she scoots closer to you. “just gotta get close enough for it,”

she sits there and looks between your eyes. they were glossy and pink, and she thought you couldn’t look any prettier right now. ellie’s eyes were the same, but now there was a stronger gleam of seduction in them, and you couldn’t help but feel a surge of warmth in your core at the sight. you’re pretty sure you could count all the freckles on her face right there, and maybe even swim in the pale green pools of her eyes if you tried. but you don’t think too much about that. the two of you sitting in stillness, admiring each other’s features, until you speak up.

you scoot closer till your knees are touching and all you can do is stare into her eyes. you’re sure you can hear your heartbeat’s rapid pulse in your ears, but you don’t care. you were high, hazy, and even a little bit horny too. all that floats and twirls around in your mind is ellie, ellie, ellie, and it’s as if you can hear it on replay, echoing with reverb as your eyes become heavier and heavier.

when your lips meet, it’s as if sparkles and butterflies flutter all around you. they are warm and soft, and also slightly chapped but the roughness is nice. the effect of the both of you being high makes everything feel frenetic and surreal, but it's so so good.

as the kiss becomes needier, you feel the coolness of her palm cup your jaw. you accidentally let out a small whimper when she intertwines her fingers into your hair, the sensation on your scalp somehow soothing an itch you didn't know was there, yet it's mostly felt in your stomach.

There was blood everywhere.

Alexis had started screaming but Sam could barely hear her over the sound of his own breathing and the heartbeat in his ears.

A piece of the car door was in him-  jutting out from above the hip.

"I can do it," he whispers. Water droplets drip onto his cheeks. The rain hadn’t stopped but at least he could be grateful for the cold jarring him awake, keeping him here.

She swings to face him, tears dripping down her face. Or was it the rain? “There’s only one way to fix this, my love.” Her face is a blur as she bends at his side, red hair brushing his face.

"If I turn you, you wouldn't have to feel like this ever again. You would never have to experience the bounds being mortal gives you- you'll be free, Sam."

He struggles, finding his voice.

"No. I can heal myself. And even if I can't, I don't want that. I don't want to live like that."

She draws in a sharp breath and grabs his face in her hands. She starts tilting his head to the side.

"I'm going to make it all better."

It happens so unbelievably fast, her decision. Her choice. His choice. 

Sam squeezes his eyes shut, blindly pushing at her hands. "Stop... please."

There was nobody for miles- they were out on some backroad. Nobody would make it there in time.

And nobody would be there to help. 

His grunts as he tries to redirect the healing magic to push her away and off of him. He tries and he tries again, but she’s just too-

“Don’t fight it.” It sounds to him more like a threat as he tries to scramble back. 

"Please," he rasps to the monster he thought he knew. 

The sharp feel of her nails digging into his skin makes his eyes snap open. Soft grey eyes stare down at him. 

Then a gentle smile, something sharp seeming caught in it- a barbedwire smile, he knew. 

Please, he thinks as darkness swallows him. 

And in that darkness that claims him, he feels something unravel inside him. 

Thread by thread, I will make you pay for what you’ve taken from me, he vows. On the threads that gave a swift snap.

He would never have this time again- the joy of living one, short life. He would now be this walking corpse. His own, waking nightmare. 

And she had done that. His maker, now. Alexis.

Alexis. The last person Darlin’ thought they’d see tonight, but somehow they weren’t surprised. They’d brushed past each other before and it seemed almost electric, they gazes meeting- but they’d never really met. It was high time they did. 

After they left William’s office, Darlin had pushed out onto the nearest balcony to have a smoke. 

The night had gone great, for the most part. 

Until they stood motionless before the woman that had turned their mate. 

Her red hair is pulled back from her face, making her look even more devastating, bronze skin gleaming. She wasn’t pale like Sam and Vincent, no. She was near haunting with her high cheekbones and silver eyes. 

She seemed a fox in the moonlight, sly and quick as sin. 

“Who are you?” they ask anyway. They scan her lithe frame, tall and wistful before them. She tosses her head back and bares her throat, laughing. 

“I’m Alexis, darling. And you, shouldn’t be here.”

They give her a tight nod, to reassure themselves or her, they weren’t sure. 

She gives them a searching look and takes a step closer. 

They take one back. 

“I have to admit, not nearly half as bad as I expected from him,” she drawls, watching them with a feline eye. “Though...” she walks up to them and stops. Moves a hand up to brush away the hair from their face. 

“I had him, first.”

They pull away, as if burned, reaching for the door. I’m done here. 

The knob doesn’t budge. They pull a second time but it doesn’t give. 

“You know, such a pretty thing like you should be smarter. You have him now, but Sam Collins is mine. Might be a bit hard to understand, so let me make myself clear.”

They spin to face her, brows furrowed. She reaches out a hand to grasp their wrist, tight enough to bruise. 

“My blood pumps through his veins, whether you like it or not. He is rightfully mine. He never saw what it was in me that made him love me, but soon, he will. As soon as you learn to take a hint.” She snarls the words, the flecks in his eyes bright as spilled blood. 

Their restraint wasn’t going to hold them very long, they knew that much. But they’d be damned if they let Alexis talk about Sam like that. 

“No. He is him, now. He spent years, if not decades, trying to be his own person. And you, do not get to take that away from him. I don’t care who the fuck you are. You don’t own him and neither do I.”

She seems taken aback by being put in her place but quickly recovers, fangs flashing in the light. 

"You really shouldn't have come here," she breathes. "Go back to that pack of yours, little wolf. Or don't. You only put them in danger, anyway. Going on some hunt for a vampire you'll never find- all you dogs are the same."

Little wolf. 

“You really don’t know when to get lost, do you?”

Little wolf. 

“What? You look a little pale, darling. Wolf got your tongue?” They shift on their feet, swallowing hard. 

That fucking letter. 

I’ll find you, little wolf. And when I do, not even your precious Sam could save you.

Love, Quinn. 

Alexis tilts her head to the side, face brightening as if to say oh, this’ll be fun.

They turn to tug at the doorhandle again. “Open this fucking door or I’m ripping it off its hinges,” they hiss. 

“He’s seems quite interested in you, if that letter was any indication. You’d make the perfect match. A pathetic dog to the serial killer vamp. On a leash and bound to his every whim, I hope.” 

Before they could stop themselves, their hand connects with her beautiful face. They feel a quick release beneath their knuckles- her nose crunching under their fingers. 

“I’m going back to my family now. And if you ever,” they glare down at her, clutching her face on her knees, “say anything about them ever again, a broken nose will be the least of your problems.”

Darlin punches a hand through the glass of the balcony door, wincing. They stick a bloody fist through and unlock the door from inside. 

They don’t bother to look back as they stride down the hall.

As they make their way into the large sitting room, they expect to see David and Sam where they were.

“David? Is everything okay?” Their question goes unanswered. The silence makes them turn cold.

They hear it before they see it, the sound of someone behind them. Before they can grab a hand out to David, an arm locks around their waist.

The Wife vs Colette vs Lizzie: We Run the World

Written 10/15/18

Glenn Close, Keira Knightly, Kristen Stewart, Chloe Sevigny. I wouldn’t want to meet any of these women in a dark alley, at least not if I’m an arrogant man who’s trying to run their lives.

Within the last two weeks, all three of these powerhouse feminist rants made their way into the Darkside Cinema (our local indie theater in Corvallis, Oregon. You know the one, hidden on top of a bookstore, up two flights of stairs, with the slogan “We Suck Less” scrawled across the olds-mobile style drinks cooler). At a glance, none of them are in my top five of the year, probably not even my top ten, but what they say together elevates them to something worth writing about.

I saw Lizzie first. My fiancee and I went in expecting poetry and got…well, not poetry. He was harder on it than I, tearing to bits its drab writing and hazy narrative. I felt defensive, recognizing the attempt at a feminist rallying cry, and wanting to support the effort even if the product fell short. Kristin Stewart amazes of course, bringing a realistic attitude to the otherwise fantastical cast of characters. Jamie Sheridan is basic, Dennis O’Hare is unnecessarily slimy, and even Chloe Sevigny performs below her talents with a flattened version of what this mysterious character could have become. Everyone else could be replaced with cardboard cutouts and probably deliver their lines with equal fervor. Stewart, however, shines like the sun. She’s meek, defenseless, and defeated. Showing in her emotional climax the level to which women have been beaten into submission; expecting rape, expecting blame, expecting ownership. The mix of determination and apathy is complex and fascinating, giving Stewart the opportunity to use all her skills and defining her career to this point. I cannot wait to see what she brings us next.

Next I saw The Wife. I went solo to this one, and I’m glad I did. I love my fiancee, but there are some stories that we as women have to experience alone, if for no other reason than to be able to sit in a dark theater and quietly hate men without feeling the need to say to the person sitting next to us “well except you dear”; and my goodness, thank you Jonathan Pryce for being willing to be a punching bag for all our pent up aggression. Cathartic and thoughtful, Glenn Close delivers a magnum opus for all women who feel underappreciated next to men in our field who are, often…okay, for the sake of this piece, who are USUALLY not as talented as we are. I’d also like to add that while working the register at said local theater (yes I work there now, definite pay drop but huge moral promotion), The Wife received mixed reviews from patrons exiting, however everyone who didn’t like it happened to be, you guessed it, a middle aged man. One man told me why he didn’t like it, saying that the characters were unrealistic and the story unbelievable: “That would never happen in this day and age”, “A woman who’s supposed to be so intelligent and in tune with her emotions would have handled that situation better”. Guess what sir who-I’m-not-allowed-to-yell-at-because-you’re-a-customer, this would ABSOLUTELY happen in this day and age, and normal humans who are just trying to fucking survive would ABSOLUTELY handle it that way. It’s hard to get into this without spoiling the plot, but for those of us who have had the honor of witnessing this beautiful story, Joan (Close) is a disturbingly accurate vessel for our thoughts and feelings on ambition, devotion, and making it through the day as a second class citizen. The whole cast is splendid, the story moving, and the message bone-shaking, forcing me into an existential crisis, wondering if I even culturally have the potential to ever be sat next to equals, or if I will always be in a class below, paired up with men who are less than me but seen as equal because the “real” men are at the other table making Birdman and Moonlight and winning all the things. But I digress. As I did for an entire night. Moving on.

Lastly I saw Colette. Ah Keira Knightly, I wanted to be you as a little girl watching Pirates of the Caribbean, and I want to be you today as a grown woman trying to figure out what being creative and independent really means. A beautifully rendered ode to classic filmmaking, Colette rises from its traditional format to challenge the heavyweight dramas of today. Its story is elegant, its writing is soft, is message is clear, and Keira Knightly reminds us all why being a woman is not something to overcome but something of which we are god damn proud. With hints of sexual freedom and trans rights that don’t overshadow the central theme, we’re privileged to observe three dimensional characters fraught with believable and relatable issues. Unlike Stewart and Sevigny in the above-mentioned lesbian period piece, Knightly crackles with chemistry with not one, not two, but THREE of her female dalliances, making the sex scenes not only enjoyable (this coming from someone who has never seen a sex scene that I consider necessary) but enlightening to the story and character.

To (finally) get back to my original point: I am honored to be living in a time when I can see these three movies back to back, and more-so when I can write about these movies and not be dismissed as just a “woman writer”, and these women, some real and some fictional, have made this reality possible. It is a bit of a shame that the directors of these films are Bjorn Runge, Craig William Macneill, and Wash Westmoreland (see an ironic pattern?), but regardless of that, these films are a one-two-three punch at a world that has changed so much in the direction of inclusion, but still has so far to go. Watch out boys, we’re coming to take our stage and we’ve got talent, determination, and years of pent up rage on our side. Next step: hand over the camera and let us tell our own stories.

Bianca Andreescu Ruled the Internet This Year as the Most-Mentioned Canadian Athlete on Twitter

Bianca Andreescu has had quite the year. The 19-year-old Mississauga-born tennis player won the Rogers Cup against Serena Williams, became the first Canadian to win a US Open Grand Slam singles title and launched a vegan beauty line so it’s no wonder she turned out to be the Canadian athlete with the most account mentions in 2019. Interestingly, this is the first time a woman has been the most-mentioned Canadian athlete on Twitter for a full calendar year.

Twitter Canada also released several other stats from this year of social media activity, based on total tweet volumes between January 1, 2019 and November 15, 2019. Shawn Mendes came out on top as the Canadian musician with the most account mentions in 2019—beating out past winners Drake and Justin Bieber—no doubt because of his record-breaking single “Senorita,” his much-talked-about relationship with fellow musician Camila Cabello, and his 2019 world tour.

Ryan Reynolds, whose live action film Pokémon Detective Pikachu came out earlier this year, was the Canadian actor with the most account mentions in 2019. According to Twitter Canada, this is the third time Reynolds has come out on top in the four years that they’ve been tracking this category. With another film yet to drop—6 Underground, on Netflix—it’s likely he’ll hold on to the top spot for the remainder of the year.

It all began with the slightest of hand gestures by a coach in Serena Williams’s box and ended in chaos, recrimination and, oh, yes, Naomi Osaka’s remarkable upset victory.

Here’s a breakdown of what happened in the women’s final of the 2018 United States Open:

Nature A Dream Matchup

Osaka, a shy, 20-year-old who was born in Japan but moved to the United States at age 3, grew up admiring and emulating Williams. She even did a report on her in third grade that she was very proud of.

She admitted before the tournament began that it had long been her dream to play Williams in a Grand Slam final, and that dream came true. But surely her dream did not play out like this, in a swirl of controversy and accusations of sexism against the chair umpire, and an awkward postmatch celebration that no one seemed to enjoy.

The setup for the entire controversy occurred in the first set in which Osaka, despite being 16 years younger and playing in her first Grand Slam final, was outplaying the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion by a wide margin.

Williams played her first professional tournament two years before Osaka was born. She was expected to impose her experience, power and will on her opponent. Then Osaka served better, made fewer mistakes and ran down most of the shots that Williams made, frustrating the six-time Open champion to win the first set, 6-2.

Then came the second set.

SECOnd Set: Osaka Serving at 0-1, 40-15

Nature A Code Violation for Coaching

Carlos Ramos, the notoriously strict chair umpire, interjected himself into the match for the first time, calling a code violation for coaching, which is essentially a formal warning. Ramos spotted Patrick Mouratoglou, sitting in the Williams box, making what he interpreted as a coaching hand gesture (he had his hands about six inches apart moving in a forward motion that Ramos interpreted as an indication of how he wanted Williams to move). Mouratoglou later admitted he was doing it, adding that all coaches did it.

Ramos’s application of the rule was accurate; however, some thought he could have shown a bit more lenience. For example, he might have issued an informal warning to Williams to tell her coach to knock it off.

Williams approached the chair and said to Ramos: “One thing I’ve never done is cheat, ever. If he gives me a thumbs up he’s telling me to, ‘Come on.’”

She added in a stern tone: “I don’t cheat to win, I’d rather lose. I’m just letting you know.”

Then she returned to business, but Osaka held her serve.

SECOnd Set: 2-1 Changeover

Nature A Civil Conversation

During the next changeover, Williams and Ramos had a civil conversation. Calling him, “umpire,” Williams explained to Ramos that she understood why he may have thought Mouratoglou was coaching, but she stressed that she never did that.

Williams, with more championships than any other player in the Open era, has often said she dislikes in-match coaching, even the legal variety on the WTA Tour, and it would be in her interest to do so. She has more experience and more understanding of the game than virtually all of her opponents. Coaching would only level the playing field.

Williams calmly said again that she did not cheat, and Ramos said, “I know that.”

It was the final moment of calm, and Williams said, “O.K., thank you so much.”

It was a key moment because Williams may have thought that she had persuaded Ramos to reverse the call on the code violation, which virtually never happens.

2nd Set: Williams Serving at 3-1, 30-40

Nature A Broken Racket and Point Penalty

Williams had gained the upper hand in the second set by breaking Osaka’s serve, and it could have been a turning point for the entire match. Instead, Williams hit a backhand into the net for an unforced error, allowing Osaka to break right back and retake control. Osaka exclaimed, “Come on,” to emphasize the point.

Williams’s fired her racket onto the court and destroyed it. Sascha Bajin, Williams’s former hitting partner and now Osaka’s coach, saw the angry display and pointed to the court, saying, “Hey.”

Throwing a racket is an automatic code violation, and because it was the second violation, Osaka gained a point for the next game. Ramos announced the score and then said, “Code violation, racket abuse, point penalty, Mrs. Williams.”

Williams did not appear to react as she sat in her chair.

2nd Set: Osaka Serving at 2-3

Nature ‘You Owe Me an Apology’

Williams walked onto the court on the deuce side, apparently expecting the score to be 0-0. When she was told to move over to the ad court because it was 0-15, Williams approached the chair again, initially confused by the score. “This is unbelievable, every time I play here I have problems,” Williams said to Ramos.

This appeared to be a reference to her 2004 Open match against Jennifer Capriati, in which several bad calls went against Williams, and the 2009 semifinal against Kim Clijsters, when Williams was called for a foot fault at a critical juncture and threatened to shove a ball down the lineswoman’s throat.

When Ramos explained that Williams had a point penalty for smashing her racket, she calmly said, “Yeah, that’s a warning.”

She continued to argue that she did not get coaching and implored Ramos to make an announcement to the crowd explaining just that. Then Williams’s frustration level increased and she grew angry, repeatedly saying that she did not get coaching.

As the discussion became more heated, the audience, heavily in Williams’s favor, began to boo, and then cheered Williams as she became even more demonstrative.

“You owe me an apology,” she said to Ramos, loudly emphasizing certain words. “I have never cheated in my life. I have a daughter and I stand for what’s right for her and I have never cheated. You owe me an apology.”

She concluded by telling Ramos that he would never umpire one of her matches again. When the match resumed, Osaka was unfazed and held her serve to draw even, 3-3.

SECOnd Set: Changeover With Osaka Leading, 4-3

Nature ‘You’re a Thief’

Osaka broke Williams’s serve again, this time with an impressive down-the-line forehand with Williams at net. Williams then continued her argument with Ramos during the changeover, sounding like an unrelenting baseball manager going after a home plate umpire.

First, she said that she had already explained to Ramos that she never got coaching.

“For you to attack my character, then something is wrong,” Williams said. “It’s wrong. You are attacking my character.”

It was difficult to hear Ramos’s response, but he apparently disputed Williams’s claim, because Williams replied: “Yes you are. You will never, ever, ever be on another court of mine as long as you live.”

Then she pointed at him and said: “You are the liar. When are you going to give me my apology. You owe me an apology. Say it! Say you’re sorry.”

When Ramos indicated he would not apologize, Williams cut off the discussion and said, “Well, then don’t talk to me.”

But Williams resumed, adding, “How dare you insinuate that I was cheating.”

As Williams got up to return to the court, she exclaimed to Ramos, “And you stole a point from me, you’re a thief, too.”

After that, Ramos issued the third code violation, which resulted in a penalty of a lost game. The rules state the first violation is a warning, then loss of point, loss of game and finally loss of match. It never got to that, but it was close.

Ramos announced to the crowd, “Code violation, verbal abuse. Game penalty, Mrs. Williams,” as Williams returned to the court. The crowd, somewhat uncertain of what exactly was going on, began to buzz in agitation.

2nd Set: Osaka Serving at 4-3 … Make That Williams Serving at 3-5

Nature Ramos Explains the Penalty

Williams walked back to the court and prepared to receive Osaka’s serve, apparently unaware that she had forfeited the game and it was now her serve, trailing 3-5. It was a wild situation to happen in a Grand Slam final, and debate raged over whether Ramos was too hasty by issuing the third code violation, but it was within the rules.

Ramos called the players over to the chair. First, he explained the situation to Osaka, and then to Williams, who was incredulous.

“Are you kidding me, because I called you a thief?” she said. “But you stole a point from me.”

Osaka stood close to the chair for a moment, signaled something to her box, and then turned and walked back to the baseline, where she tried to stay focused by bouncing up and down in the middle of the court, mostly facing away from the dispute.

Williams repeated her argument that she was not a cheater and then said, “Excuse me, I need the referee.”

Nature Appeal to the Tournament Officials

Brian Earley, the longtime tournament referee and Donna Kelso, the Grand Slam supervisor, entered from the player’s entrance at the corner of the court, and Williams made the first accusation of bias for being a woman.

While Williams appealed to Kelso, who is also a WTA supervisor, Earley climbed up to the chair to confer with Ramos and was heard to say, as if repeating, “For calling you a thief.”

Then the discussion was among Williams, Earley and Kelso for nearly three minutes while Osaka waited.

Williams repeated over and over that it was unfair. “This has happened to me too many times,” she said. “To lose a game for saying that? It’s not fair. I mean, it’s really not.”

That was when Williams introduced the issue of bias.

“Do you know how many other men do things that are — that do much worse than that?” she said to Kelso. “This is not fair. There’s a lot of men out here that have said a lot of things, but if they’re men, that doesn’t happen to them.”

The fans, most of whom could not hear the discussion, grew more agitated, with whistling and booing mixing with jeers and invective.

Williams added to Earley and Kelso, “Because I’m a woman, he’s going to take this away from me?”

Then, suddenly, her tone softened.

“I know you know it,” she said to Earley. “I know you can’t admit it, but it’s not right. I know you can’t change it, but I’m saying, it’s not right. I get the rules, but I’m just saying it’s not right.

Then, just before returning to the court she said: “It’s not fair. That’s all I have to say.”

Nature Osaka Beats Her Idol

If the raging dispute distracted Osaka in any way, she did not show it. Leading by 5-4, 40-30, she drilled a serve out wide at 114 miles per hour. Williams tipped it with her racket, but the ball only deflected wide. Incredibly, Osaka was a first-time Grand Slam champion at 20, and the first ever from Japan, man or woman.

During what was the greatest moment of her career — if not her life — Osaka heard booing from a still-angry crowd. Osaka gave the slightest exclamation with her fist, pulled her visor down over her face and walked to the net.

Williams met her with a smile and gave her a hug — a notable difference from the formal handshake at the net five months ago in Miami when Osaka beat her idol in their first meeting. Osaka shook Ramos’s hands, but Williams declined, making one more comment about the apology she still expected.

Nature A Muted Celebration

Williams and Osaka stood next to each other on the podium with the former champions Chris Evert and Billie Jean King and the U.S.T.A. president, Katrina Adams, but no one smiled at first. When the M.C. started to speak, the fans unleashed loud boos and Osaka pulled her visor over her face again, and wept.

Seeing that, Williams put her arm around Osaka and said something to ease the tension. When it was her turn to speak to the crowd, she implored the fans to stop booing and to laud Osaka’s achievement.

Osaka’s brief and poignant acceptance speech underscored the overall sadness of what should have been such a happy moment.

“I know that everyone was cheering for her,” she told the crowd, referring to Williams. “I’m sorry it had to end like this. I just want to say thank you for watching the match.”

Nature A Call for Equality and a Calm Reflection

Williams came to her postmatch news conference prepared to discuss the whole matter. One key issue was that Mouratoglou had already admitted to reporters that he was in fact coaching, contrary to her premise throughout the controversy. She said someone briefed her about it before she came in, and she texted her coach for clarification. She did not seem pleased with him.

“I’m trying to figure out why he would say that,” she said. “I don’t understand. I mean, maybe he said, ‘You can do it.’ I was on the far other end, so I’m not sure. I want to clarify, myself, what he’s talking about.”

In her final statement, after a question about what she might have changed if she could go back, Williams again invoked the sexism that she referred to on court.

“I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all kinds of stuff,” she said.

“For me to say ‘Thief’ and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. He’s never taken a game from a man because they said ‘Thief’. Then she added: “The fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions, and that want to express themselves, and want to be a strong woman. They’re going to be allowed to do that because of today. Maybe it didn’t work out for me, but it’s going to work out for the next person.”

Osaka came in afterward and finally had a chance to express happier feelings about the win, her parents, her coach, and how she will be received in Japan, where she will be welcomed as a hero at a tournament in Tokyo this month.

She said that she really did not know what happened during the dispute, and insisted that she still held the same adoration for Williams, no matter what happened.

“I’m always going to remember the Serena that I love,” she said. “It doesn’t change anything for me. She was really nice to me at the net and on the podium. I don’t really see what would change.”

The only thing that really changed is that now Osaka is a Grand Slam champion, too.
