Anybody got tips on how to get over yourself re: when things get popular/are popular I immediately do not like them and do not enjoy being anywhere near these things. And I want to stop this and enjoy life more.
For instance I've joined a local book club to socialize and read more and we're reading a "dark romantasy" book and while everyone else is loving it I can barely get through a chapter because I want to turn my nose up at it. All I want to do is tear it down and be like "here's everything wrong with it".
Please tell me how to turn this off. I want to have more fun in my life. I want to enjoy things 😭
#sure there's warranted criticism#but this is NOT that this is an issue I've had my whole life#its so im not like other girls#and im SICK of it#I've missed out on so much#bc I can't bring myself to like things if they're popular/enjoyed by groups#bc for some reason in my head i must think this makes me a better person#in some fucked up way#i want to be less of a bitch and just enjoy things for the sake of enjoying them 😭#dem speaks#this isn't limited to books#this is like every facet of my life#it's SO judgemental and i don't like it#and i can't seem to turn it off

Mairuma continuing to impress in how siblings are written. Of course Clara, who at the start of the series didn't think twice about axes being an appropriate play item to use with her schoolmates, has a brother close to her own age who is ecstatic about almost being actually murdered by his teacher. From here I can only conclude that the highlight of Urara's early childhood was being chased around by a Clara weilding a meat tenderizer. All the pieces fit together perfectly; no notes.
Update: Since y'all have liked the tags they are getting added as full text:
I was actually wondering for a good while how "books that try to chomp on you" fit in with Clara being a good big sis #and how there wasn't really signs of her playing dangerous games with her other younger siblings #but like yeah a sibling close in age to you being weird in way that compliments your style of being weird #absolutely does cause you both to become even more weird both together & separately #source: I have siblings #but yeah Clara "fun aficionado" Valac's standards were absolutely warped by Urara "I HAVE A GREAT PLAN" Valac #Urara loves being in danger so swinging heavy objects at him is okay because that's how he has the most fun! #wydm being jabbed at with a sharp objects isn't fun? u-chan is a stick in the mud & even he loves being relentlessly attacked w stabby stick #early Clara not knowing what a "boundary" or "reasonable limit" is both a cause & effect of Urara being such a thrill seeker #oopsie daisy they got caught in a feedback loop and now they're both extra weird

i hate how my particular investment in LT/these characters/history in general will have me sounding like some sort of "retvrn" bozo. or, maybe i just hate that saying "i wish things were more sincere again and that sometimes things that were older were in fact better" has been................... idek how to finish this thought Guys i'm getting overly emotional about LT kiddie records from the '50s. i'm getting emotional about how merchandising for these characters has sucked for the last 45+ years. i do not mean to sound like some sort of obnoxious "old stuff had SOUL to it new stuff is BAD we must RETURN" bozo. but guys. look at this
the appeal.. the whimsy
WHERE DID WE GO WRONG!!!!!!!!!
i legitimately get upset if i think about this for too long. what are we doing man
#FOAMING AT THE MOUTH. WHY HAVE WE BECOME SO AFRAID OF WHIMSY AND SINCERITY AND MAYBE ACCIDENTALLY COMING OFF AS GOOFY IN THE PROCESS#i will so take the slight warm corniness of a 'Bozo approved' Daffy Duck kiddie record over. over. i don't know#i get mad when people dunk on something for being corny because it's old or vice versa but when i rant about these things i end up sounding#like some gross traditionalist and i don't wanna come off as that either 💔#it makes me sad. and needlessly offended#and maybe that's why i have so many disparities with many modern LT fans and attitudes towards the franchise. but when i word them i feel#like i sound pretentious...... everyone likes different things. but i just. IDK!!!#a really good means of comparison for this phenomenon is comparing LT coloring books from the 30s/40s to the 90s#(i did this a few weeks ago and thought i was gonna pop a blood vessel for the reasons above)#i miss earnest i miss warmth i miss whimsy < ok grandma let's get you to bed#this isn't to say everything needs to be cloying. huge reason why i love LT is because it's the exact opposite. but it's earnest in what#it's doing. idk it's late i'm rambling and Charged#also the old stuff being records isnt really a commentary i was just going down a rabbit hole of records and getting emotional at how we#don't get stuff like this anymore and it isn't limited to just LT#'capitalism back in MY day was ARTFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!'#can i just like work in merchandising or something so i can design Good Stuff. i'm constantly coming up with merchandising ideas with my#coworkers. kids deserve better. we deserve better. i deserve better!!!!!#ugh. too passionate for my own good#i was a begrudging graphic design major (not my major of choice) but i do end up realizing just how passionate i am about graphic design#when i make posts like this#this is honestly why warmth is my number one aim in art anymore i just want art to feel human. i hope my art feels human to you#the sterile corporateness of the modern examples genuinely makes me so so so sad

What I encounter in workshops and drafts and sometimes even in published pages is a cooly objective first-person narration, stories and novels told from an I lacking both explanatory power and the impulse toward explication itself. The deracinated I is a filmic projection, dancing on cinema’s halogenic glow, but lacking the charisma and poetic force of cinema qua cinema. The first-person narrator without interiority, subtext, and indeed the very capacity for thought or judgement is the purest expression of the passivity that organizes much of contemporary life. This passivity extends from the realm of the aesthetic into the realms of the personal and the political. We have a generation of writers who have watched more movies, television, and footage of human life than they have experienced of that life firsthand. Even their understanding and experience of their own inner lives originates in skits, memes, and video essays. They have no philosophers or prophets. They have YouTubers and influencers, and in this shallow, highly processed and highly mediated experience of consciousness, there is no thought. Merely the telepathic beaming of image from the screen to the interior of the person’s mind.
—Brandon Taylor, "against casting tape fiction"
#this problem isn't just limited to first person POV#i see it in fanfic all the fucking time#and it's a big reason why i don't read much fic anymore#where has the interiority of characters gone?#i put some blame on dumb memes like “only one braincell”#and “no thoughts head empty”#well here's a pithy quote for you: “stupid is as stupid does”#brandon taylor#on writing#commonplace book

Eddis went to speak to the king, and Ion, on the king’s orders, had to turn her away. She went to Attolia with her concerns, and Attolia told her about Lader’s warning. “Lader was always poisonous,” said Eddis. “His words are still prophecy. The gods themselves say that what Sejanus knows will destroy the king,” said Attolia. “He must give up the names of those who have committed treason. It is an ugly business. I see your concerns, but the law is clear.” Eddis said, “Sejanus used every weaseling trick he knew to torment Gen. Even if Gen had his own reasons for allowing it, he came to hate Sejanus and those wounds still bleed. I am afraid emotion clouds his reason.” “Then it is good that he has the law to guide him.” Eddis frowned. “The law may not be enough.”
not Helen trying to stop Gen from torturing a prisoner and trying to enlist help from Miss Torture Is My Specialty
#fascinated by irene invoking The Law twice#we don't give enough credit to the indentured in this book/fandom#Irene is such a hide-behind-the-law* type of person... in QoA that's what she tells Gen when she explains her rationale for his punishment#I might be way off but it gives me a vision of her learning exactly the word of the law so when she puts a nobleman such as Sejanus or Gen#through 'interrogation' then she knows exactly what her legal limitations are and aren't#*show-yourself-behind-the-law?#now just a side comment but. there isn't one thing Helen tries to do in this book that she succeeds#return of the thief#queen's thief

I've only read the first volume of Dungeon Meshi but I'm convinced Laios and Marcille are both autistic but two EXTREMELY different flavors of autism, so much so it enables autistic PVP (one sided, Laios is unaware, possibly due to the autism)
#dungeon meshi#LIKE. WITH LAIOS it feels like a v obvious conclusion to come to hc wise but marcille.......#i vaguely know there's some stuff going on where i can guess at a few things (absorbed through osmosis) (as little spoilers as possible)#but to me she is so tryhard autism coded. getting frustrated w herself when she's slower/can't keep up w her peers/friends#physically limited. feeling the need to prove herself/scared of weighing down her allies. needs to do things 'by the books'.#stubborn streak. can accidentally say offensive things due to bluntness/overcompensation becoming an ego#she's even a picky eater.#meanwhile laios said 'hyperfixating isn't enough i need to eat it' and he fucking meant it.#honestly you could probably make an argument for any of them (main cast) being autistic. as with an hcs in general LMFAO#so much love for senshi as well. epitome of being an older dude w a niche interest and seeing an autistic young man#and going 'yeah okay. i can take you under my wing.'#all of this is so real and HAS happened to me (even being plucked up by an old man who noticed my aimless demeanor and put me to work)

interesting how often the ones claiming that galadriel's season 2 arc was perfect and everyone who doesn't think so is just too haladriel brainrotted or something are the same folks who openly say it's fine if she were to just... fade into the background in season 3 or disappear outright. sorry I actually do think it's sexist for galadriel to be introduced as the central protagonist only for her to be gradually phased out so that gil-galad and elendil or elrond or whichever legendarium dude can have more to do.
#I mean effectively s2 was elrond's 'turn' in that sense. lots of development for him that hinged on sticking gal in a holding pattern#(don't even get me started on the way brimby's ascension to a lead pov could only be done with gal's absence & tbh at sauron's expense too)#but now some of yall are like IT'S GIL-GALAD'S TURN & frothing at the mouth for even less of galadriel so that he can take the s3 reigns#'gil-galad is important because he's the king!' girl i do not care lmao and guess what neither do the normies#normies get invested in the characters and relationships + conflicts that they were following from the beginning - the touchstones#we're not making this up this is how television works#shows need that connective tether the foundational thing that stays consistent to build your audience#it's why louis in the amc iwtv show is not going anywhere in s3 - because he's been the heart and soul for 2 seasons#and you can't just discard him for the sake of adhering to book canon!#you can't swap protagonists around season to season and expect your audience to keep up. it's very very hard to get away with#i'd argue this is even more key in streaming series with the limited episode counts. there isn't *time* to dilute the focus so much#ugh anyway s2's arc for galadriel was rife with problems primarily because you could remove her from it and hardly change the overall story#she was in this weird limbo where she was intensely invested in the A Plot but barred from affecting or interrupting it#within the A Plot itself - eregion and sauron and celebrimbor - she effectively didn't exist#every active plot driving choice near her was made by elrond cirdan gil-galad adar celebrimbor. one after the other. she was a passenger#'it's fine for other characters to make choices tho!' not when it's the whole gd season kiddos#and what do you know viewership is down

Was poking around AO3 for kicks and giggles, and I find it fascinating how so many folks can just go ah, yes, this story Inspires me to Create, while this…not so much.
I know this isn’t entirely fair given the discrepancy in the amount of media per franchise, but here are the AO3 works counts for Dune, Star Wars, and Star Trek, all sci-fi classics that also have new additions to their respective franchises.
Especially given how Star Wars itself draws heavy inspiration from Dune, I just find the differences in these numbers interesting! And I feel the same! SW does appeal to me a lot more than the bloodline obsession/freaky eugenics/religious manipulation themes of Dune, which also exists in SW but far less.
(Also, while I really loved Chani in the new film, I definitely personally did not feel any shipping sparks between her and Paul, I just wanted her to get away. The guy does NOT deserve her in any way. (then again, I also felt no shipping sparks between Padmé and Anakin, so this could just be a me thing…))
This also reminds me of how the James Cameron Avatar films are a huge fandom flop, despite the budget and blockbustery fanfare they got.
To be clear, I don't necessary think media needs to spark fandom creativity in order to be good or worthwhile, and there's plenty of stuff I enjoy without feeling the need to create, so this isn't meant to be a criticism per se.
But I was just contemplating about different media and themes that inspire me and makes me want to engage in a community, versus stuff that doesn't.
If you have any thoughts, feel free to share!
#YukiPri rambles#Star Wars#Dune#Star Trek#this is just me rambling but it felt like a Tumblr post#again folks have reasons to want/not want to watch these films and this post isn't about that#I didn't watch the new Avatar so can't really critique it#My only experience with Dune is the new movies though I've read up on the full story and#ngl it did not make me want to watch the older stuff or read the books#I have limited experience with Star Trek too#so I'm personally coming from a hugely Star Wars biased perspective but#hmm just thinkin the numbers be interesting

Something you don't often see - this book's title page makes sure to certify that it was produced in line with wartime rationing requirements. And you can kind of tell from just how thin the paper is!
#unfortunately it isn't very good and it's quite niche#which means i have a bit of a dilemma on what to do with it#because i don't really want it but i would rather it not be destroyed#as a 1943 first edition of a book with a fairly limited print run by someone i admire... oh well i have shelf space for now

It's so easy to see a post shiting on Azriel/Elriel because of the "too sexual and not romantic" aspect and then when you check that person's blog it becomes immediately evident that they loved ACOSF because it was "full of smut"
#elriel#azriel shadowsinger#elain archeron#the hypocrisy truly knows no limit for them#this isn't to shit on nessian btw tho i have problems with their book#it's more so how booktook people or just women that read this books in general act so damn stupid about#a man wanting a woman...woman who gave he has shared attraction with for like a year now and they met two years ago

The "feminist" book from the 70s I'm reading went from interesting but pretentious -> condescending -> pretentious -> interesting -> suspiciously biocentric -> full-on citing the most infamous TERF of the decade
#books#feminism#“feminism”#women's rights#intersectional feminism#her condescension towards “black and Latino kids” isn't great either#but she acknowledges that she's limited by privilege there#she needs to stfu about giving birth being an essential part of being a woman#involuntarily sterilized women#WHO SHE TALKS ABOUT IN THIS FUCKING ESSAY#count too#so do voluntary non-parents#bioessentialism#if you think woman = vagina + uterus#you're doing the patriarchy's work for them

For TST
I just finished listening to Elliot Page's book and I have to say it was an interesting piece of literature. I highly highly recommend it.
I have never read a book that is so closely aligned with myself as a trans man and my upbringing. I never thought I would read book that defines what it means to be a trans man in the public eye. I do not want to be as famous as him but I would like to make a change to the world as he has.
I am comfortable in who I am and who I love and how I choose to express my gender. Things really can and often do get better with time. And I hope that any person that sees this knows that they are not trapped in the shoes that society has put them in and they can actively choose a different pair.
I would love to read Pageboy soon; these memoirs and other art and literature are our history, part of our lifeblood as a community, and it's vital that we read each other's lives and understand that we truly are here in this world💛
It's great to read such a glowing review from you, and I'm so happy that his words lit your soul like it has
#ask#anon#transsexual thursday#to any trans person reading this: please document your life however you can. make music or keep a journal or paint or write books#your existence is so important and leaving as much evidence of your life as possible is important no matter WHO you are#it doesn't matter if you're famous or rich or the top in society. it matters that you *exist*#if you can and want to: documenting your life is an amazing way to engage with community and who you are#you can document anything you want or need to - the good the bad the ugly - whatever you want to share is important#i know i for one am FOREVER grateful to see historical accounts of trans people - sometimes it's all you have when you first come out#the only figures i had that i knew to look up to were men like billy tipton and dr. allan L. hart and a couple others#and while it felt lonely at first i was so comforted to know that my existence as trans and as a man was not unprecedented or unknown#so if you can/want to document yourself please do#it isn't conceited or selfish or bad. it's human. it's natural. it's revolutionary - especially when you're trans#ESPECIALLY when our history is both impressive and sometimes limited

i think lots of us forget what truly makes art and media so captivating; the ability to he transported into a different point of view, and to view the world from a new perspective, one that you never would've understood had you not stumbled upon the narrative that you're reading. pigeonholing yourself into a genre seems so common nowadays, but media consumption has always been about understanding how other people see the world we live in!!
#I'm saying this bc I'm sooooo tired of recommending a book to someone to have them go#“oh nah I'm a romance reader actually”#“oh I mainly read fantasy”#not saying you shouldn't have a favourite genre obviously not the point!! but I think lots of us fall into this habit#which is aided by the rise of tiktok/social media's love of the Personal Brand#where we don't try to explore new genres and povs#if you don't like the book don't read it! but don't limit your horizons by never picking up something that doesn't neatly fit into your vib#this isn't just tiktok romance girls btw this is also the dark academia girls & the mystery readers#and so much of the fun of reading/watching movies comes from discovering these things that#you didn't know about!!!!#most books and movies that have blown my mind have been completely out of left field#c.txt
