Why do you like Guzma so much? What puts him in blorbo territory for you. I've never really gotten it

GUZMA PROPAGANDA TIME

His house is on Route 2 on Melemele, just outside of Hau'oli. In it you find:

Dusty trophies, all 2nd and 3rd place

A picture of little Guzma holding his Island Challenge amulet with pride

A bag of broken golf clubs that are just. On display. The two most popular theories are that 1) Guzma broke them in anger, or 2) Guzma's dad hit him with them

His dad, who says the following when talked to: "It's good for kids to experience their own journeys, but running away without even a word to your parents is another thing entirely. I tried to set that boy of mine straight, but when I did, I was the one who got beat…"

His mom, who appears postgame, and says: "I know that there were a lot of rumors flying around, saying that our Guzma was up to no good and doing terrible things…but I know it was all just lies."

Already, we've got a terrible home life on display. Aggressive dad, home conflict, never winning, and a mom that refuses to see anything as less than her perfect ideal home.

Team Skull was made out of the ashes of people who failed the Island Challenge, who followed the Ula'Ula Kahuna before Nanu. Said Kahuna was struck down by the Tapu he was supposed to serve, after disregarding the environment and building a lot of things without Tapu approval, namely the Thrify Megamart. Tapu Village was destroyed.

So Guzma ran away from home after being a failure. Joined up under the old Kahuna of Ula'Ula. Watched that guy get got by Tapu Bulu. Which, by the way, Pokédex entry:

"The guardian deity of Ula’ula is a lazy Pokémon. It commands plants to immobilize its foes and then deals them a savage blow with its horns."

Granted, we don't know for sure that the Kahuna was killed, as it's never said explicitly what happened to them, but:

According to Hapu, the position of Kahuna is for life

According to Acerola, the position can't be refused

Literally everything about the Tapus points to them being wild, vengeful, untamed nature spirits

Tapu Village is WRECKED

Regardless, Guzma's life got bowled over by whatever happened to that Kahuna. Then he immediately went on to fill the Kahuna's shoes and take command over the collective misfits and failures left in the wreckage, and made Team Skull.

He was also best friends at some point with Professor Kukui, but they had a COLLOSSAL falling out over becoming Trial Captains together (Guzma held onto the dream, Kukui ditched it, Guzma's still salty about that).

And then. AND THEN. There's the thing with Lusamine.

Rich lady who finally gives Guzma the recognition he never got. Tells him everything he wants to hear. Leads him along. Lets him play as her heel out on Alola, giving him the bad guy position against Aether so he'll be taken seriously.

Gets this guy, who's hooked on approval and praise, so wrapped around her finger that he'll ignore her freaky museum of cryogenically frozen Pokémon, who'll commit ACTUAL crimes like kidnapping for her, who FOLLOWS HER into a WORMHOLE to AN ELDRITCH HORROR DIMENSION-

And she just...leaves him. Ditches him to fend for himself while she pursues Ultra Beasts. Didn't care when one got him and terrified him. Didn't listen to him afterwards. "There's no talking to her, no reasoning with her… She's just gone."

And after that?

He tears down everything he's built.

Disbands Team Skull, who still love him. Tries to remove all Skull association from himself, from covering tattoos to taping over his custom jacket. Goes home. To that house. Fights the protag one last time, then when he loses, gives them his lucky charm that he won in his first battle. Is in a major depressive slump. That you can't fix in-game. No happy ending for him. He's beat.

And that's not even getting into his mannerisms! When he loses, he acknowledges your win, like a good sport, but then grabs his hair and yells at himself- "Guzma, what is WRONG with you?!" When he's out and about, he's a showboat, addressing Malie Garden with "greetings, cowering public!" and talking big about himself and how he's going to beat you down. When he got got by Nihilego, who amplifies the emotions most CORE to your being, he says he's never felt true terror like that before.

Breaks things when he's mad, yet look at his Shady House room.

Sure, it's disorganized and vandalized with spray paint, but look at it. Fancy plates and wine bottles. Pretty lamps. A globe with a golden stand. Fine porcelain. A king-sized bed.

He likes luxury. He's a bit clumsy in getting it and making the impression he wants, but he likes feeling special, and important, like the former owners of the manor were.

He's a theater kid with wild mood swings who ran away from home, who looked after people no one else would, who's so, SO easily manipulated by scraps of affection. He likes Tapu Cocoa. He wanted to be a Trial Captain and make puzzles for kids to beat. His lead Pokémon is the final form of Wimpod, who are garbage at battling, and who flee at the first sign of trouble.

And that's all BEFORE talking about my own personal headcanons about him.

Chase, s1e8: I gave my mum a bit of trouble when I was [the patient's age], and I turned out alright. Even she thought so.

i just watched 'socratic method' too, and huh! yeah! good shit! chase trying to warn 15-year-old luke away from spending his life taking care of his mom, admitting he "would have done the same thing," able to explain the hyper-organization of the house to foreman - this is what you do, you try to control everything, you organize and list and track and it's like you're making a difference. chase watching luke reunite with his now-sane mom, looking away and leaving because that wasn't him. (house being weirdly nice to luke. sympathetic. you did a good job given your situation. you've taken good care of her. )

rowan chase showing up, smiling sincerely and greeting his son "dr chase." actually seeming pleased to see him. probably even proud. he made something of himself. he's glad his son comes to see him off. he smiles when they hug. he doesn't tell him he's dying anyway. he still abandoned him. rowan telling chase it wasn't his job to take care of his mother, that it was too much for a kid (house telling luke he did the best he could). rowan abandoning him to do it anyway.

chase in s8, explaining to adams his mother died with him hating her, his mother used to lock him away for hours and hours. the implication that rowan was proud, did care and even love his son, but was a shitty and neglectful father anyway. the implication that chase's mother couldn't have thought he turned out alright, that he was "too much" for her and she'd lock him up, that maybe one of the reasons he hated her was that she hadn't been a loving parent even before she fell apart.

(that chase has a much younger sister, in diapers when he was 15. almost certainly still a minor, still a teenager, when he goes to the US. that he says she wasted "half her life" drinking, when she's probably only in her 20s.)

i contain multitudes and can say that i am a little :( about vex and percy being teammates with benefits because i think there’s something particularly heartbreaking about the dynamic that was neither of them ever said a thing even though they both were aware of it and it took losing percy for vex to finally admit it and Even Then, she couldn’t say it to percy’s face when they got him back, percy was the one who had to make the first move (that they were both alive for at least) and he was only able to do that because he’d heard her confession, because he never would’ve thought otherwise. to be clear, i also very much enjoy the story being told, i think i just wish they’d maybe committed more significantly to This Is A Campaign-Inspired Story Rather Than A Retelling sooner in the show so that maybe there would be a bit more grounding or set-up for the storylines the narrative is focusing on (and i understand why they wouldn’t), because i think they’re doing very well with percy’s arc for example, because they started with focusing on his and keeping his beats mostly the same and that seems to be much the same case as some of his second wave of meaty character stuff has arrived. but with vex they’ve aimed for the same character beats but it doesn’t always feel as earned or really feel like much character at all; i think saundor particularly was a bit of an :/, since in the campaign it was really a catalyst for vex interrogating her role in the party and her morality and something she struggled to get over and that haunted her far beyond the walls of that tree, but in the show it hasn’t really had a clear impact on vex beyond the scope of the episode itself — syldor certainly has, but the challenge that saundor presented didn’t really have much weight beyond its moment. and obviously a large part of that’s also probably just, 7 protagonists and wanting to expand the perspectives to antagonists and give more room for side characters is a lot of things to cover. and, i say with love, perhaps a bit too ambitious for a 12 episode per season, ~22 minute runtime show if they want their characters to have the kind of depth that really makes campaign 1 shine the way it does.

here's your answer: yes, they would. falling in love with you feels like falling for your childhood best friend. it's warm, cozy, just feels so natural. it feels right. you're someone who knows how to make people feel comfortable around you; soft spoken, sweet, gentle, such a caring soul. it's hard not to like you. even though i don't really know you, somehow i feel like i have a weak spot for you already; you remind me so much of one of those plaid blankets, the ones you would wrap around your shoulders on a rainy day, and of the tepid sunlight that creeps through the curtains in the early morning. will you be mine?

I didn't expect her to get this result from all the ones I've seen floating around, but when has she ever not surprised me? Some of it does ring true, though, and I do like the healing effect her gentleness and sweetness has on Thancred in my stupid wolship. The "childhood best friend" part did make me chuckle, because it actually was her childhood best friend and crush who traumatized and messed her up in irreversibly catastrophic ways lol. But don't worry, she's doing a lot better now (late-game Thancred is as good for her as she is for him)! Healing is a process :)

Every year Kate holds her own Kane Family Events™️ on the same nights as Bruce has his, a cousin rivalry that's been going on as long as either of them can remember.

Dick occasionally joined the Kane's to spite Bruce the first few years, but eventually settled into his Richy Wayne persona.

Jason attended the first few Wayne galas, and immediately decided he wasn't fond of all the formality. He made a deal with Dick, he'll go to the Kane events and bring back leftovers if Dick does the same at Wayne events.

He ends up having a lot of fun! He's pretty much immediately hoisted over to the kid table, which would be more offensive if 18 year old Bette Kane weren't also there. Eventually someone else joins their little gossip duo, a blonde boy named Joey whose around Dick's age. Apparently his mom is Kate's aunt or something and she runs the New York branch of Kane Corp. He's pretty cool, Jason was a little surprised he couldn't talk but he knows ASL so it wasn't an issue and they have a lot in common!

Flash forward a few months later. There's a new Titan team, and Jason gets to visit them today. He's heard of them all at least, Wally, Kori, and Donna are regular fixtures at the manor, and he's met Roy a few times too. He's NOT expecting to see Cousin Joey lounging on the couch.

"-and this is Jericho, or Joey." Dick introduces, oblivious to Jason's inner turmoil.

"Nice to meet you." He says on autopilot. He opens his mouth to- to? He's not actually sure what he could say but he doesn't get the opportunity either way.

Joey waves back, curt and polite as would be expected of two perfect strangers. There's a secretive little smile quirking his lips, the one he gets after he drops a particularly juicy piece of gossip.

Jason's lips thin, keeping the questions trapped behind his teeth. He nods subtly, and the introductions move on.

It's only at the next gathering, with Bette off at the buffet, the two of them sequestered in the corner, that he makes a realization. "Oh my God auntie Addie is a meta!" He gasps, interrupting the conversation. He'd barely thought it through. He saw Adeline deeply engaged with the annual drinking contest out of the corner of his eye and it fell from his mouth before he could stop it. If Joey is a meta that was born with his powers, he had to get them from somewhere. He's not exactly surprised that Addie is a metahuman, he just hadn't realized.

Joey gives him a weird look, part amused and confused before he seems to follow Jason's train of thought. He shakes his head with a grin, signing father. Like that gives him any context.

Joey doesn't talk about his dad. Whoever he is has never shown up to one of these events as far as Jason could tell. His only clue is the last name Wilson, not one that Joey uses himself, but the one entered in the system at the tower.

He turns that information around in his head, utilizing all of those detective skills to piece the clues together before Joey interrupts him with a gentle nudge.

He's picking me up tonight if you want to meet him, Joey offers, a spark of mischief in his eyes that makes Jason suspicious.

Jason chokes on his own spit as he watches Deathstroke emerge from a Benz, dressed down in jeans and a T-shirt. The man gives Jason a look over, recognizes him, and then ignores him completely. Ushering Joey into the car talking about tickets to some events or other that may or may not be a mission.

Where’s that post I made about Mike being the companion that broke under the horrors bc I’m still right. When I think abt the THINGS some companions have had to endure and have still seemingly been fine, and then I think of mike losing himself and his values to a festering psychological wound that left him open to radicalisation, it’s like he is the evidence that actually everything isn’t fine.

Which is why it’s so important that he should be next seen in meditation, in the seeking of peace, in quietness and healing because not only is he a character that needs it he’s also a character that knows he needs it and seeks it out for himself, because he doesn’t recognise who he is anymore and he wants, not to redeem himself in the eyes of others (he won’t even go near UNIT, not even when he needs their help, he goes through Sarah Jane instead!), but to become a better person, to stop being a threat, and to heal for his own soul’s sake.

And so he goes from someone who was willing to see the entirety of human history erased, to someone who will risk his life for one person and the fact that that ultimately saves his life always imo comes across as a bit easy if you watch planet of the spiders without this context in mind. But when you do think about where Mike has been, psychologically, from the green death through to planet of the spiders, it doesn’t seem easy at all but actually a significant if understated character moment.
