Pourquoi London
21—24 March 4 Princelet Street | London Spitalfields
Gertrude and Canopy Collections are thrilled to announce their first collaborative exhibition, Pourquoi London. For the past few years, both platforms have been championing alternative models to democratise the art industry and support emerging artists in a fast-changing art world. Set against the backdrop of an exceptional Grade-II listed building in the heart of Spitalfields, this exhibition showcases a curated cross section of some of the most compelling artists operating across both platforms.
Pourquoi London is presented in a space which is an antithesis to the white cube. Rather than being displayed in visual isolation against plain white walls, the artworks are placed into conversation with the history of the building and by extension, the historical context of London more broadly.
Pourquoi London is not just an exhibition, it is an exploration of the evolving language of art and an invitation to engage with the narratives that resonate with contemporary living artists. The London art scene has faced significant challenges in recent years and the impact of various global crises has been strongly felt by artists and galleries alike. The city increasingly needs to defend its place in the global art world, and the artists exhibited here help to highlight what it means to be an artist working in London today.
The exhibition is curated by Will Jarvis (CEO of Gertrude) and Louise Chignac (co-founder of Canopy Collections). It will feature over thirty artists including Francesca Anfossi, Anna Blom, Bokani, Richard J. Butler, Thomas Cameron, Helen Clarke, William Cobbing, Lara Davies, James Dearlove, Juliet Ferguson Rose, Abi Freckleton, Iris Garagnoux, Harriet Gillet, Richard Hards, Emmet Kierans, Charlotte Kingsnorth, Jon Kipps, Hannah Knox, Sarah Lederman, Ranny Macdonald, Dominic Myatt, Tamsin Nagel, Rebecca Parkin, Sarah Poots, Emerson Pullman, Leon Scott-Engel, William Stein, Emma Tod, Ian Whittlesea, Kate Williams, Aethan Wills, Salomé Wu.
Practical information
FREE entry Exhibition open 22—24 March, 10am—7pm Public Opening: Thursday 21 March, 7—10pm 4 Princelet Street, London E1 6QH

Oh what a night!
After 17 years Leeds band The Bluebirds reunited for one night only to a packed house in Korks, Otley on 23rd July 2017.
This had been my main band from about 1995-2000. We played many times at the Dublin and Cork festivals, released an album and even had a stint on The Paul Jones Blues Show down at Pebblle Mill.
Jon Burr - Harp. Anton Fenech - Sax. Cleve Freckleton - Keys and Vox. Clifton Hughes - Vox. Gordon Kilroy - percussion and drums. Barkley McKay - Guitar and Keys. Courtny Thomas - Bass. Jon Whitfield - Drums.
Here is one of the unreleased original songs - Love Light - from the reunion gig on the 23rd. Composed by Clifton Hughes and Jon Whitfield with the band appropriating some form of Flashlight influence for the middle section - we preempted Bruno Mars and Jon Ronson in our borrowing!
I managed to record the entire gig from the back of the hall with a mid-side mic and synced it up in Protools to the only complete footage I have, taken by mobile phone from one of the audience members. There are other snippets of footage but all incomplete, so I am hoping I can collate them to make a complete video of the night.
I find it a really powerful tool to use a mobile device such as phone or iPad to capture performance footage and then use Protools to sync up the recorded multi tracked audio.  Every session I do at the studio I try and take an outtake video of the band running through a tune whilst recording the audio. I can usually get it up to Youtube by the next day to help promote the project. Couldn’t do that back in the reel to reel days that easily!

Why Fitbit isn’t the future of wearables
This week, Fitbit released a new fitness tracker: the Alta HR. The Alta HR’s claim to fame is that it’s the world’s thinnest fitness wristband that includesheart rate monitoringin addition to step, stair, and sleeptracking.
Yay?
If you’ve been struggling to get on the wearables bandwagon, you’re not alone. The market is growing (slowly)but there’s a distinct lack of excitement from potential buyers.
“When you look at the state of the wearable industry, its going through growing pains right now,” BSX TechnologiesCEO and founderDustin Freckletontold the Daily Dot. “Fatigue has begun to set in as the result of brand promises that are not being fulfilled by the manufacturers. Its exciting to have heart rateput into a device, the first generation gets a lot of buzz, but after that fades, people ask what value is this providing for me?”
BSX Technologies is part of a new wave of wearable devices. These gadgetsare more accurate than the majority of today’s devices, more comprehensive in terms of what information they gather, and more specific in their functionality. They also move beyond purelylogging datathey use AI and modeling forpredictive analytics. This canhelp you make better decisions, so you can better meet your personal goals. If you’re looking for a device to augment your smartphone’s capabilities, rather than just replicating them on your wrist, this growing crop of wearables could be what you’ve been holding out for.
Today’s landscape
The Fitbits and Apple Watches of today striveformass market appeal. In recent years, most wearable makershave put a heavy focus on making devices that fit your personal styleand that’s great, because no one wants to wear something ugly.Unfortunately, besides getting smaller, the gadgetryinside these better-looking wearables remains largely unchanged. Theytrack a variety of stats decently, but don’t excel in any particular area. And since, for the most part, they are not medical grade devices, theylack that level of accuracy.
That can befrustrating for device wearers looking to improve their lives using that information. “There’s no ability to understand something if the data you have, you cant rely on,” Freckleton said.
What’s next
And that’s why many wearablesmakers are moving toward clinical-grade accuracy. The Philips Health Watchis one such device that’s available now. Buyers can not only track their stats, includinginsights on their sleep, resting respiration rate, and resting heart rate, they can share that data with a physicianwith algorithms and measurements that are provento be accurate. Its app then uses the information it gathers to gentlyguide you into a healthier lifestyle.
Fitness brand Qardio’s upcoming QardioCore ECG/EKGcould give athletes and those with heart conditions an unparalleled look into their cardiovascular health. For the level and granularity of data it provides20 million data points per dayyou’d normally need to monitor your heart with patches and wires. Instead, QardioCore is a chest strap you can wear discreetly underneath your clothes.
And BSX Technologies’ wrist wornLVL hydration monitorwill give wearers an unprecedented scope of how their fluid intake affects their sleep, happiness, athletic performance, and overall health. Following a long day of air travel, my grandfather once experienced stroke-like symptoms from extreme dehydration. With a device like this, that could have been mitigated: It would have alerted him (and potentially a loved one or a physician) of his condition, and urged him to get some fluids, stat.
Does anyone really need this stuff?
Like computers, smartphones, fashion, and just about every other mature retail industry, consumers now have choice with their wearables. For some, a smartwatch will make the most sense as a purchase. However, the fitness tracking space is still growing (in terms of purchases, not just products). It’s here that the Fitbitcould lose ground as consumers realize they can find a health tracker that’s perfect for themfor their activity level, health concerns, and even occupation.
A new pocket-friendly gadget called Dosime, for example, tracks radiation exposure. While that’s not something you or I may ever consider, for those who work around x-ray technology or jet set across the globe on a regular basis, it’s somethingthat should be monitoredand tracking it could be useful over time.
“Health risk increases linearly with overall cumulative exposure to radiation,” Dosime CEO Thomas Logan said. “If you were empowered to measure it in real time, it gives you the ability to take mitigating actions.” That is, you might not opt for that extra CT scan after an injury if you knew you’d already surpassedthe yearly recommended limit of radiation exposure.
We will soonhave the option tozero in on exactly what health stats matter to uswith ourwearables, and buy a product that fits. Perhaps the Fitbit will never go awaythere will likely always be folks who want only a generic look at their healthbut it certainly could be eclipsed by the growing number of wearables that measurespecialized stats, better.
