Trespasser Dream Slides - Fade Dreaming and Continued Connection

The Trespasser dream slides for a romanced Lavellan mark a subtle but interesting divergence in the story of Lavellan and Solas, in that not every player who romanced these two gets these slides - depending on choices.

If Lavellan ends their relationship with anger or finality, vowing to stop Solas no matter the cost, even if it means killing him - these dreams never appear. And I think that detail is brilliant. The story is using the absence of these dreams as a narrative device, one that, to me, actually reflects how the Fade responds to emotions. So when Lavellan emotionally disconnects from Solas, when she severs the bond and chooses to carry nothing of him forward, the Fade has nothing to echo and Solas never appears, honouring her choice. The absence of these dreams in this path becomes the story’s way of saying this relationship is indeed over.

But for the Lavellan who holds hope, who vows to save him from himself and his own destruction, who has expressed her love clearly to Solas - the dreams do come. This narrative path reflects the choices of a player who's decided that their bond endures.

And through these dreams, the game shows how these two people continue to affect each other, be drawn to each other even across distance and years.

The Dreams 

What keeps drawing my attention to these slides is they never confirm whose dreams they are.

“Lavellan sometimes came awake from dreams in which her lover watched her sadly from across an endless distance”

It doesn’t say her dreams, or that she dreamed of Solas, nor does it deny they may be his. And I appreciate how that ambiguity again mirrors the nature of the Fade, leaving open the possibility that these dreams belong to either of them, or to both.

The dreams could originate with Lavellan, stirred by hope and belief, with Solas drawn into them by her emotional presence in the Fade. They could originate with Solas subconsciously pulling her into his dreams, revealing his own hidden ache for her. Or it could be a mutual convergence - neither initiating, but both arriving, called into the same dreamscape by the strength of their bond. These slides allow for all of these possibilities in it's refusal to define the source.

What's interesting is that Solas is always withdrawing from them. When Lavellan reaches for him he doesn’t speak, doesn’t approach - he vanishes. It suggests that he’s not drawn to her to control or watch her possessively in dreams, but allows himself to be near her, pulling back before any contact is made.

Remember, Solas himself confessed to Lavellan she draws him away from the Fade. It's logical to assume then that she draws him in the Fade as well. Because Inquisitor Lavellan is still Fade Walking.

Lavellan - Fade Walker

What we know for certain is that the Inquisitor has demonstrated the ability to find Solas in the Fade before. In the Haven dream sequence, the Inquisitor locates him while sleeping. After they wake, Solas expresses surprise that they were able to find him and that he changed the setting to Haven once they did. At the time, it’s assumed that the Anchor is what allows the Inquisitor to remain conscious and lucid within the Fade. But that may not be entirely true, the Trespasser dream slides complicate that assumption because at that point in the story, the Anchor is gone and yet:

“Still she searched, and dreamed, and waited, for a way to change the Dread Wolf’s heart.”

The way “dreamed” is used here - alongside verbs like searched and waited - positions it as an act in itself. It implies that Lavellan isn't just sleeping, but actively entering the Fade to dream and seek. Here, dreamed carries intention, movement and purpose.

Whether she communes with spirits, follows the traces he’s left behind, or navigates the remnants of memories, we aren’t told. But the phrasing highly suggests that Lavellan is looking for answers, information, ways to change the Dread Wolf's heart while in the Fade. (Which continues to support my theory that the Inquisitor has been forever altered by the Anchor.)

Do the Dreams Continue?

We’re never told that the dreams end - and the use of the plural dreams reinforces the sense that the tension between Lavellan and Solas remains unresolved. It suggests an ongoing, quiet pull that continues to draw them to one another. Perhaps unconsciously, they return to that shared space again and again, a connection that spills forward into Veilguard.

Maybe that ongoing pull is why Lavellan receives the wolf statuette, why she can tell Rook she still loves Solas, and why Solas, close to his goal of reshaping the world, stops to write her a letter. It even colours the way he speaks of her to Rook - “She is a good woman.” Not was, not someone I once knew: she exists for him in the present because their dreams keep finding their way to each other.

For the story, eight years separate Trespasser and Veilguard. For us as players, that’s a long time - but for them, if their dreams still connect them, still reach across the Fade? That distance may not be felt at all. Time moves differently in memory, and even more so in the Fade. Their last shared dream with each other could have come the night before the ritual, close enough to stir old feelings and sharpen Solas’ need to send those final words to his vhenan.

After the Globes both Steve and Eddie's teams decided radio silence was the best. Let people assume what they’re gonna assume. Hope that that assumption starts with D and ends with rugs.

And most people do assume that. It circulates as a listicle oddity for a week then disappears. Written off as some weird celebrity quirk. Hollywood whispers, but they always do.

But then some people, some people start to speculate.

They listen to Penitence, really listen to Penitence.

Through all its torn up apologies, its sorrow & regrets, they hear about someone getting left behind, turned against for the crime of their success & the artist’s failure. Someone the artist would do anything to get back.

And they start to dig through old interviews of Steve’s. The really early ones. Digital archives of defunct genre mags. Where he talks about falling into acting by chance, talks about moving out to LA with a partner and working odd jobs.

It doesn’t line up with the stuff Eddie had touted on late-night. Steve hadn’t moved to LA to be an actor. All his early interviews say so. Lie after lie piles up so they swirl and they speculate and they make their theories.

But it’s nothing to worry about. Their teams both reassure them. Not really. It stays in its corner of the internet. Stays that way for months. Well into the summer. Quiets down a little, even. Well, it does until–

The picture itself is incriminating.

Steve Harrington, leaving Eddie Munson’s NYC brownstone, stretching out for a morning jog. Hickeys littering his neck, a bite-mark visible on his collar bone.

But he's not embarrassed, no. For some reason, he’s grinning like an asshole.

This conversation between Shauna & Jeff in Digestif is SO interesting as a precursor to season 3. I wanted to rewatch some season 2 episodes because I said season 3 totally reframed season 2’s writing in a positive way for me & gosh I really do stand by that.

Shauna’s worst fear truly is being boring! And it ALL boils back down to that tragic unresolved tension between her & Jackie. Jackie made Shauna feel small. Jackie had charisma. Jackie was a natural leader. And it made Shauna feel so worthless - forever afraid of her feelings for Jackie & intimidated by her & jealous of her. Shauna loved Jackie but she also wanted to be her & she also hated her for the way she made her feel.

I unfortunately can’t find any screenshots of Shauna bagging the packaged meat containing human remains in her dream interaction with ghost Jackie while she’s sleeping outside Melissa’s house (god there really will never be another show like this.) But it’s such an interesting scene because Shauna is horrified that “this” is her life. She’s bagging groceries. It’s human meat but it’s packaged, it’s put away. She did all those horrific things for nothing. Just to have this basic life & the worst part of it all is that Jackie is STILL mocking her.

The real Jackie loved Shauna. She could be a little bitchy, but it was never intentionally malicious. That insecurity that Shauna feels deep in her bones is just like the unwell ness that Lottie talks about. I want to write a whole meta on the girls who can’t go home sometime but for now let’s focus on Shaunas insecurity. She projects it on everyone around her because SHE can’t be allowed to be boring.

I’ve seen it said that the thesis of Jackie & Shaunas relationship is “why didn’t you ever say anything?” And I would agree! To an extent! I do think that Shauna’s insecurity ran so deep that the relationship had a high potential to be toxic even if they both opened up. But I also think that if there’s NO version where the story has a happy ending then there’s no tragedy & also that there genuinely IS a world where these two could’ve healed if the circumstances were a little different. If it’s true that there were slumber party make outs before that makes it even more likely. They’re halfway there. They just needed to admit that it was real & talk about it & reaffirm what they meant to each other!

I was put off at first by the talk of “two realities” in season 3. I didn’t want another Lost. but I think I understand where it’s going now.

There was a tiny chance at a happy ending & positive growth somewhere for Shauna, in another life. But it crashed & burned with the plane. She destroyed it & consumed it along with Jackie’s flesh & her entire identity. And then there was Melissa!

I don’t want this to get any more excessively long then it already has but the entire reason I started talking about Shauna’s fear of being boring is her suicidal ideation in the finale.

The wilderness has twisted Shaunas perception of everything including normalcy vs “boring.” Way back in the pilot she “just wanted to win” hence her standing back & letting the plan to injure Allie go through. So yes, she was always a little twisted. But now? She’s lost Jackie. She held her dead baby in her arms. She butchered her pseudo little brother after everyone left him to die including her because they were starving to death. At this point, she doesn’t know how to exist except in chaos. That’s what trauma does. Shauna CANT deal with things being safe & normal.

Shauna would rather DIE than have Melissa be “boring” because she’s projecting her own insecurities onto Melissa. Shauna tried to play the role she PERCEIVED Jackie to have in her life by emotionally manipulating & degrading Melissa to the last. And Shauna has been making impossible choices & doing horrible things for months. For Melissa to make the merciful choice when Shauna never did? That’s worse to Shauna than Melissa killing her.

Shauna has always sought excitement & risk. Cheating with Jeff is the first glimpse we get of it. Cheating on Jeff with Adam is the first biggie in the adult timeline. She can’t sit still & that’s amplified in the wilderness.

Shauna is homicidal but she’s also suicidal. She seeks risk like it’s an addiction. Adult Melissa accuses Shauna of wanting to blow up her life & she’s not wrong. (Of course Melisa ALSO specifically sought out her ex who once shot a gun inches from her & made her piss herself publicly then smirked about it & jumped Shaunas bones when Shauna held a knife to her throat & later after she & Shauna crippled a man together sooo… okay this is already too long we don’t have time to do an in depth on this crazy bitch too)

Anyway in conclusion Shauna will NEVER be satisfied. The most excited she ever was by Melissa was when Melissa almost killed her & she was disappointed when that failed. Then she turned her rage about it into sadism with Mari. Anyway never forget that Shauna Shipman might be destructive to everyone else around her but she is also destructive to herself & completely broken & twisted inside & THAT is why she is my poor little pookie meow meow forever.
