Time's Angels

Prologue 

A cold December evening in Oyama, Japan is always peaceful, especially with the view of Mt. Fuji on the side.

But today, wasn't so peaceful. It was loud and raucous with the sound of metal beasts running around the track. Some were roaring while others were howling and hollering.

The occasion? Round 1 of the Global Time Attack Championship, being run in Fuji Speedway.

 GTAC is the premier time attack series which attracts speed-addicted maniacs of all walks of life to select battlegrounds, to let the beasts go toe to toe. But not with each other directly. These beasts compete against the stopwatch. The faster the car, the higher the ranking. The prize? Glory and a cool 10 million USD cash reward for 1st place.

Of all the beasts running on track,  Smith's Racing's Corvette C6 was the loudest and had been the fastest on track, ever since John Fenstemacher started competing. This year, the 20th running of GTAC, hadn't been different till now. John was still the loudest and the fastest.

His strategy had always been to start the first lap as a sighting lap and the subsequent lap as his record lap. He worked with the same strategy and till now, his lead hasn't been challenged, which made him comfortable.

"What's the track temperature?" His voice chimed in the radio,  struggling to be heard over the bellow of the great big heart of the beast.

"69.8 degrees Fahrenheit." His pit chief radioed in. This wasn't good news at all. The operating temperature range for the Michelin slicks he was running was ideally somewhere between 140 and 212 F.

He checked his rear view mirror to see the car behind him. He was confident he wouldn't see any car but he liked to avoid risks.

He saw a black orb sort of object approaching in his rear view mirror. And it was approaching fast.

This surprised him as for the longest time, his C6 Corvette was the fastest and highest horsepower car to ever compete in this championship.

As the black orb on his rear view mirror came closer and closer, he could clearly make out the details of it.It wasn't an orb. It was a car.

More specifically, it was a WRX STi, seemingly a 2014 model.

He was startled, as he knew that most of the teams which ran Subarus in the sport would go for really conservative horsepower numbers and hence be slower than the rest of the pack.This wasn't the case with this one.

"Who's the one behind me?" He asked into the radio, frantically.

"That's the Black Panther." Said his pit chief in the tone of an undertaker at a funeral.

That name felt familiar to him as he had seen the car in free practice sessions. But this was not like what he had seen. In those sessions, it was pretty much the slowest car among them all.

He had heard of the legend of Delta Motorsports, a team based out of Ibaraki and their ability to produce dominant cars one after the other.

Yet, in all his years of competing, he had never seen one from the team, until now.

The black panther was now on his bumper, drafting him with only an inch to spare.The Subaru was like nothing he had seen in the sport. With its black and pink paint, its gigantic rear wing, its carbon fibre front and rear canards, its speed, nothing could prepare him for what was on his bumper.

He tried to shake the black Subaru off his tail but to no avail. Whichever side he moved to, it moved to as well, with an agility which frightened him to his spine.

The two ferocious beasts were coming up to turn one of Fuji Speedway, Daiichi. It was an old school shootout of who'd shoot first. Or rather, who'd brake first.

The sound of the two engines bouncing off each other was almost like hearing a panther and a lion battle each other out on the savannah.

John tried his best to keep a level head and he braked as late as possible into the right-hander.

He turned into the corner, as he got off the anchors and onto the accelerator.

He checked his rear view again, expecting the black panther to be on his bumper.

But, it wasn't there.

He frantically looked around like a rabbit being hunted by a black panther.

It was instead, on his right-rear side, 5 o' clock position.​​​

"What the hell is he planning now?" He wondered. But it was only then he could notice the car which was already on the inside line.

It was an Integra, from the lower Pro-Am league. Less power, less aero, slower.

He expected the black Subaru to get on his bumper again and follow him throughout the whole corner.

But the Subaru's action couldn't be farther from his guess.

The Subaru overtook him on the turn-in and almost latched onto the door of the lower spec Integra and overtook that car as they got out of the corner, leaving both the Integra and the corvette in its dust.

The most notable thing during that whole move was how quick the tamer of the black panther had been. And throughout the whole corner, that thing seemingly had unlimited grip.

The other thing was how the rear wing bowed down as the tamer got on the brakes.

"Active aero....." He realised. This was the first time anyone in the history of the sport used it and used it so well.

The heart of the black panther wasn't as loud as the one in his beast, but what overpowered the sound of the engine was the sound of the turbocharger.

It whistled away like there was no tomorrow. That thing didn't even have the turbo lag, common with cars like these

He was struggling to calm his nerves. His heart was racing faster than his car could ever go.

He slowed down and gradually pulled over towards the exit of T1. He ended his run there.

"What the hell are you doing John? Why the fuck did you stop?" His pit chief, Jimmy, screamed into his ears angrily.

"I was mauled by a black panther, Jim." said John meekly.
