Coffee with God: February 26, 2025
Mark 9:38-40Wednesday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary TimeCalled to Do Good In today’s Gospel, Jesus rebukes His disciples for their narrow mindset. They believe that only those who belong to their group can do good, but Jesus corrects them, saying, “Do not prevent him” (Mk 9:39). He reminds them that goodness is not limited to a select few—anyone who does good is part of God’s work. The Gospel…

59th track: "False God" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift from her seventh studio album, Lover(2019). Written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff, it has an atmospheric, slow-building production combining neo soul, R&B, smooth jazz, and sophisti-pop. The jazz-influenced composition consists of a saxophone riff, trap beats, and hiccuping vocal samples. The lyrics use religious imagery to depict hardships and intimacy in a long-distance romantic relationship, mentioning New York City and its neighborhood West Village.
Music critics highlighted the sexually provocative lyrics and the sultry production. Some regarded "False God" as an album highlight, but a few otherwise found it unremarkable. Commercially, the song peaked at number 59 on the ARIA Singles Chart and number 77 on both the US Billboard Hot 100and Canadian Hot 100. It received certifications in Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
Swift performed the song on a 2019 episode of Saturday Night Live, assisted by the show's musical director Lenny Pickett on saxophone. She sang it live four times on the Eras Tour(2023–2024). The song has been covered by the English singer-songwriter James Bay and the American country singer Ryan Hurd.
"False God" is about how false promises can help overcome the challenges of a long-distance relationship ("We were stupid to jump in the ocean separating us/ Remember how I'd fly to you?"). The song extensively uses religious imagery, mentioning false god, altar, sacramental wine, heaven, and hell. Some reviewers thought that the lyrics alluded to oral sex ("Religion's in your lips/ [...] The altar is my hips").
The narrator talks about physical pleasure using heavenly imagery: "I know heaven's a thing, I go there when you touch me, honey." The couple encounters challenges ("Hell is when I fight with you") and tries to make amends, but puts up with uneasy silence ("And you can't talk to me when I'm like this/ Daring you to leave me just so I can try and scare you/ You're the West Village/ You still do it for me, babe"). Religious imagery continue in the lyrics, "Making confessions and we're begging for forgiveness/ Got the wine for you." In the chorus, the narrator talks about how "religion's in your lips" and "the alter is my hips", ultimately accepting the false hopes, "We might just get away with it/ [...] Even if it's a false god." The line "We'd still worship this love" is repeated multiple times.
60th track: "Hallelujah" is a song written by Canadian singer Leonard Cohen, originally released on his album Various Positions (1984). Achieving little initial success, the song found greater popular acclaim through a new version recorded by John Cale in 1991. Cale's version inspired a 1994 recording by Jeff Buckley (which is being highlighted today) that in 2004 was ranked number 259 on Rolling Stone's "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
Jeff Buckley, inspired by Cale's earlier cover, recorded one of the most acclaimed versions of "Hallelujah" for his only complete album, Grace, in 1994. It was released as a single in 2007, ten years after Buckley's death.
Critical reception
In 2004, Buckley's version was ranked number 259 on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". The same year Timecalled Buckley's version "exquisitely sung," observing "Cohen murmured the original like a dirge, but ... Buckley treated the ... song like a tiny capsule of humanity, using his voice to careen between glory and sadness, beauty and pain ... It's one of the great songs."
In September 2007, a poll of fifty songwriters conducted by the magazine Q listed "Hallelujah" among the all-time "Top 10 Greatest Tracks" with John Legend calling Buckley's version "as near perfect as you can get. The lyrics to 'Hallelujah' are just incredible and the melody's gorgeous and then there's Jeff's interpretation of it. It's one of the most beautiful pieces of recorded music I've ever heard." In July 2009, the Buckley track was ranked number three on the 2009 Triple J Hottest 100 of All Time, a listener poll held every decade by the Australian radio station Triple J. In 2017, The International Observer named Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" the greatest song of all time.
On 2 April 2013, it was announced that Buckley's version of the song will be inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.
Buckley's version was not an instant hit, nor did Buckley live to see the full measure of the reception his recording would ultimately have; he died in 1997. The album on which it appeared did not go gold in the US until 2002, nine years after its release. In fact, like Cohen's original, the Buckley version was not released as a single until much later, and it did not chart until 2006, posthumously for Buckley. In March of that year, Buckley had his first national top 10 best-seller when "Hallelujah" was at number seven in Norway. In 2007, it made the top 3 on the Swedish charts. In March 2008, it topped Billboard's Hot Digital Songs in the US after a performance of the song by Jason Castro in the seventh season of American Idol. The sudden resurgence of interest provided both Gold and Platinum status, the RIAA certifying the digital track on 22 April 2008. It has sold 1,144,000 digital copies in the US as of May 2010. It also hit number one in France in March 2008.
The Buckley version has been widely used in film and television dramas, including the movie Lord of War, the series The West Wing,Crossing Jordan, Without a Trace, The O.C., Third Watch, LAX, and Justiça. "Hallelujah can be joyous or bittersweet, depending on what part of it you use", Time quoted Buckley's publisher as saying. The magazine opined that its liberal use in some cases was "a tacit admission that neither the writers nor the actors could convey their characters' emotions as well as Buckley."
On 20 April 2013, Buckley's version of the song was played at Fenway Park during a tribute honoring the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing before the Red Sox played their first home game following the tragedy.

"claude." and if (when?) he turns to face her, his cheek will just ... poke itself on her waiting finger. why is she doing this? because.
hi maxamundo
“hey, teach. something on your mind?” claude’s eyes are on a work of art that’s slung across the wall, though that hardly lasts in the company of byleth. there are far more interesting things than the techniques used to color and follow a gradient in this landscape. besides, he’s seen this painting of the monastery a hundred times before.
still… claude tries not to get caught up in being bored by convention. the longer he spends in cycles, the easier it’ll be for him to find something he never noticed before. and once he finds that possibility, he can follow it into something brand new, and it’s bound to become something great.
altogether, he’s thinking too hard. particularly because as he turns to attention, the soft curve of his cheek presses right into byleth’s set trap. the cushion of her finger pokes where his dimple would dip for a smile, and claude quirks a brow.
“apparently so. you must be seriously fascinated with my face.” then, he gives her forehead a light prod with his pinky. this isn’t the first time she’s gotten around to poking his cheek, after all. “don’t think too hard about it, okay? i can think of a few better things to do.” a wide, easy grin. “but only a few.”

poke the waist window. just poke it. why is it there. who are you, felix.
BETRAYAL COMES IN THE FORM OF A TOUCH / fleeting and brief and stabbing in its nature and his skin crawls ———— dramatic, perhaps, but that hardly reduces the inherent compulsion for self defense in the name of such a full frontal attack !! ( … ) alright, genuinely dramatic, what with the fact that she’s merely poked him rather than genuinely attacked him but the two are practically one in the same considering she’s managed to launch an assault against the least defended part of him / and he’s reconsidering this overcoat, now.
he’s not willing to admit that he twitches at her touch, an instinctive drawing away and twisting and he doesn’t think of it as a RETREAT but rather to get an unimpeded view of the enemy who looks at him innocently ———— RUBBISH !! NONSENSE !! ———— with her eyes wide and hand still raised and it’s impressive, he must admit.
❝ ———— byleth, ❞ name as a statement and name as a question and name as a WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING and her hand lowers as her gaze drops to the asymmetrical cut to his coat. as if judging it. or thereabouts.
why their interactions are like this / so stilted and strange / he’ll never know.
❝ i’m testing you, ❞ he’s half certain that she’s lying.
❝ by accosting me? ❞
❝ it’s a vulnerability. ❞
at some point his hand settled along his flank and he’s not sure if it happened in the immediate aftermath of the poke or somewhere in motion / but he’s covering this vulnerability and he has to admit, begrudging though it may be, that she has a point. something of a point. a mild minor slight point that perhaps his choice of clothing errs on the side of ———— oddity.
but he likes this coat.he really, truly does.
❝ perhaps, but not on the battlefield, ❞ considering he doesn’t wear these clothes in battled and she knows that as well as he. his arms cross over his chest / something of a concerted effort in the name of not resting his hand on his waist anymore. ❝ but if you’ve considered this, i’ll have to be more wary around the others. ❞
there’s a pause before, ❝ felix, are you ticklish? ❞
and suddenly : some of his worst fears are realized. ❝ what? ———— no !! ❞
damn it, why is he a bad liar?

today the sky was packed full of clouds. entrapped in a gray color scheme, it heavily pigments the space around them, almost as if the goddess herself took a paint brush and made a melancholy piece. as the saying apparently went she was a being who taketh and giveth away the very life she claims to protect. his own cynicalism towards religion aside, while strolling down near the cobblestone graves he cannot help but spot a familiar face. immediately, he knows who the person is and the circumstances for being there. needless to say it’s an unhappy reason, one which makes his lips tug downward in a pitying frown. should he say something? he thought about just leaving her be, let the injuries of a wounded heart attempt to heal on their own, as kind words couldn’t easily repair. however, before he can attempt an unnoticed escape, the professor turns around and spots him --- crap.
❛ oh --- h-hey, teach! --- ❜ there’s a slight crack in his voice ( smooth as unkempt mahogany ) but he manages to recover from that little fumble. ❛ sorry about that i ... didn’t mean to linger. ❜ claude sighs, promptly rubbing a hand behind his neck. ❛ anyway, if i’m interrupting you i’ll simply be on my way. like i was never here. ❜ though, oddly enough, part of him’s itching to stay.

❛ teach, it’s nothing. ❜ it really isn’t. were there a world where the average layperson would be seen with gory crimson covering nearly all side of one’s face, then such an exterior could be deemed benign, no harm intended nor done to the individual ! but it’s not the case. altruistic action caused deathly blow to be taken in her stead. despite the ire in her words, he’d do it again. she’s an invaluable asset friend that cannot deliver her last breath just yet. ❛ i promise, i’m fine. c’mon, let’s get going. it’s not safe here. ❜

ballroom dances aren’t his forte, as much as he tries to look comfortable in such a setting, his true roots lie elsewhere; the types of dances hes used too are much livelier, typically enjoyed around a bonfire, with lively loud music ( beautiful drums and strings in harmony ) and cheerful voices to match. while the soft atmosphere with ambient lighting and a room stuffed full of people wasn’t horrible, it definitely made claude feel out of place. though, one couldn’t tell by his typical smile without being keen. maybe a fellow outsider would know the true emotions behind an artificial grin. however the one thing, well --- person, who didn’t make him feel that way, he notices, stands far away from the action, seemingly unsure how to interact. it’s almost as if she’s never attended such a formal event before. funny, he can relate. thus, a voice inside his head ( call it a hunch if you will ) wills him to walk closer, to nonchalantly single her out from the crowd. the golden deer flashes a charming smile ( surprisingly genuine in nature ) then, gently takes ahold of her hand and he can’t help but wonder in the moment, were they always this warm? for now he keeps his curiosity at bay, gives her a playful wink, then guides her to the dance floor. a bold and risky move perhaps, but his eyes are quick to reassure her ‘ don’t worry, just a quick one. ’ as they walk together. plus --- if she really wanted too, byleth very well could’ve denied him straight out. her compliance however only edges him further, to lead as any gentleman would.
since everyone else was already dancing, they’d blend in the crowd perfectly together, attention dropping on and off them in favor of the other nobles. his fellow house leaders can take the spotlight off him for once. despite it not being his favorite type of dance, the golden deer’s quick to initiate the lead, happy to show her the ropes. as the violins play his voice carries over them slightly, not too loud or soft, in order to catch her attention: ❛ sorry, teach. seeing you stand there all alone didn’t quite sit right with me. so, humor and dance with me for a little bit, kay? ❜ someone else could've plucked her right from the field, stealing his chance at a tacky noble’s dance. ❛ that being said, i hope i didn’t steal you away from anyone. ❜ his words say one thing, but tone completely another, albeit very subtly ( or so he’d like to believe. ) he keeps the dance nice and slow at a speed they can both oblige by, swaying softly as one, hand-in-hand. usually, claude wants these musical displays to end as fast as possible, however, the urge to keep dancing and the small talk alive continues: ❛ this your first time dancing like this? ❜ he pries out of pure curiosity, not because he can feel her heels hit at his feet. nope --- totally not.
@timecall hehehe.
