Tread softly, you tread on Stede’s dreams…

When Stede shows Mary the model boat, he is asking for her to look at his soul. This is who I am, and here is my heart. It’s a window to my authentic self… which I think belongs at sea. I need creativity and idiosyncrasy. If you understand this, you will start to know something true about me.

It’s a moment of vulnerability, a slip of society’s mask. A silent scream. The start of Stede’s journey of self-discovery becoming actualised. And although he will eventually grow past this expression of self, at this point in time it is keeping Stede sane; and he is looking for validation of this becoming through his wife’s endorsement and wanting it too.

And of course Mary doesn’t want this life. Why would she? I would’ve said a thousand times no, as well. But you can see the hurt in Stede’s body. How slowly he unfolds from the ground. How small his stature appears despite the reality of towering over Mary. Hands clasped in agony. The look of shame on his face. Mary’s rejection of life on a boat is an inadvertent rejection of everything Stede feels he is or wants to be. It must feel like a death.

Ed’s reaction to the model boat is wonderful in comparison. He gets how amazing it is, including the Revenge itself, and what Stede is trying to achieve out here on the ocean.

Like Stede later with the red silk, Ed holds Stede’s heart in his hands, and actually coos over it. He understands the soul of the person that would have a teeny tiny model version of a much larger ship. Ed’s probably never considered such a thing before, but he intuitively gets the fun of it immediately. He wants to know more about the person who would do this because he can already see what this man is - and he likes it.

Interestingly, Ed would agree with Mary regarding life at sea: she doesn’t want it, Ed’s thinking of packing it all in. But Ed can appreciate the uniqueness of the man behind this particular vision, the creativity and fresh approach. He understands ‘break the monotony’. It’s that Ed wants.

Ed knows and gets Stede before meeting him properly. And when Ed looks at the model boat, he also starts to see something of himself, long suppressed, reflected back. Ed sees hope and a future and a bend in the road.

That’s one loaded toy boat.

Since we're all in our Tiny Ed and Stede Era, I thought I'd bring back a fic I wrote for last AUgust featuring teeny tiny Ed and Stede.

I could give you a plot, or I could just tell you it's 10K of tooth fairy Ed and flower fairy Stede having a magical adventure and falling in love. And Stede travels on the back of a rosy maple moth. It's very cute.
