Favorites : Space is the Place (1974)

It can be very easy to find yourself focusing on the past or present during Black History Month, but as time and culture advances, it may end up being just as important to consider the future.  Luckily, the Criterion Collection has taken this into consideration in the best way they know how : a curated collection of films focusing on Afrofuturism.  With nearly 30 films in the collection, the deep dive will certainly continue past the end of February, but there’s one film that not only stands as the hallmark of Afrofuturism, but deserves an immediate look… that film is the Sun Ra masterpiece Space is the Place.

Sun Ra (himself) and his Arkestra land on an abandoned planet, and after surveying it, it is decided that Sun Ra will return to save Black people from Earth’s impending demise by transporting them to his newly discovered planet.  Charged with a mission, Sun Ra returns to Earth, but immediately finds himself at odds with The Overseer (Ray Johnson), a ruthless pimp with intentions of keeping communities disenfranchised to the point of his benefit.  Sun Ra and The Overseer agree to a mystic card game, with the prize at stake being the destiny of the Black community, but as their game plays out on a cosmic level, parallel games of Earthly deception and trickery take place on a corporeal level.

The brisk fusion (no pun intended) of the Sun Ra mythos, philosophy and psychedlica into the Blaxploitation framework is poignant, as each element usually celebrated within said framework is countered with a positive counterpart.  The struggles between spiritual enlightenment and secular vice are personified through Sun Ra and The Overseer, respectively, which helps to humanize what is often considered strictly on a moral and philosophical level.  Rightly, their conflict is presented as a game, with the playing field presented as Oakland, and the people within given the dual role of pawns in the game and potential victims or victors, based on the outcome of the game.  Much like deeply spiritual and personal conflicts, outside forces do everything they can to sway the game in the favor of whoever serves their best interest, with many players switching allegiances at the blink of an eye.

As one of the earliest examples of Afrofuturism, the sheer brilliance of how forward-thinking the film is should be celebrated on a scholarly level.  In many ways, this film is as revolutionary as the actions of the Black Panthers or Malcolm X in its celebration of Blackness, communal uplifting and sense of urgency.  As beautiful as Sun Ra’s music is, it can be hard to digest for the average listener, but Space is the Place works just as much as a primer for his work as it does an exploration of history and science fiction’s points of congruence.  Concepts of alternate realities, multiverses and meta-reality are scattered all throughout the film, with two of the most intriguing being direct references to Sun Ra as a recording artist within the fictionalized world, as well as the reveal of government sanction parties (read : the FBI and/or COINTELPRO, presented as NASA) keeping tabs on efforts directly tied to the advancement of Black people.

Stylistically, Space is the Place might be the closest spiritual approximation of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s iconic work that I’ve ever seen, though the context and subtext obviously differ due to cultural and creative distinctions between Jodorowsky and Sun Ra.  The film is rich with soul, be it the joy and love that the Oakland residents exhibit, the casual deep dives into heavy topics, or the live performances sewn into the narrative.  The live performances serve as a sort of Greek chorus in the way that they observe and report on the activities taking place in the film.  The editing and cinematography are wonderfully stylized about as close as a film can get to a music video (and vice-versa) without either style undercutting the other, making the film as visually magnetic and visceral as it is meaningful and reflection-worthy.

Sun Ra exudes a calm and controlled mysticism in his role as interstellar ambassador and urban griot, with his methodical approach and hypnotic timbre used as a palette cleanser in preparation of the lofty concepts he serves.  Ray Johnson’s trickster approach to The Overseer cuts right down to the philosophical roots of his character, attaining all of the viciousness and deceptive nature of a devil without the standard tropes.  Clarence Brewer and  Jack Baker bring youthful energy to the table, but not at the expense of open-mindedness and a receptive nature.  Christopher Brooks perfectly encapsulates the slick talking, wheeling and dealing that comes with capitalist industries as he does everything he can to exploit Sun Ra in the name of draining him of all that can be monetized.  Walter Burns and Morgan Upton radiate both sides of the G-Man coin in their characterizations, with one being the brains with free reign and the other supplying the brawn unrestrained.  Barbara Deloney, Erika Leder, La Shaa Stallings, Sinthia Ayala, Tiny Parker and Sam Bankhead lend their talents to round out the cast.

Much like reflecting on one’s lived experience, revisiting Space is the Place in my adult years feels both familiar and brand new.  I thought I understood the film then, but it’s only now that I’m realizing just how far the mind-bending rabbit holes of this film truly go.  If you have an affinity for jazz or complex films in deeply appealing packages, then Space is the Place is for you.
