it is so funny to me how i started learning english on my own age 10 because the manga i was reading was turning so so so bad i went to fan content to cope with how shit it was. and 15 years later this pays off as my boss tells me i'm an essential asset in the team as the only fluent english-speaker.

I feel like All Might tried to dress up as Santa for an event one year, complete with an 'I AM HERE! TO DELIVER PRESENTS!' and the bad news is he was very obviously not Santa but the good news is every single child present was so excited to see All Might they totally forgot about that other dude

Indigenous Storytelling
A lot of the stuff I've posted so far is pretty white western-centric views of telling stories. The whole article is very informative! An excerpt: "Many of the main characters in Plains Indian mythology never end. Not only are they immortal and indestructible—where they may be killed in one story and are right back at it in another—they also age with the listener. Coyote stories for children have childlike morals; for teens Coyote is a much rougher character; and, for elders only, grandpa Coyote is smart, and his stories are deep and filled with complicated plots and plans."

Heyo! I hope it’s okay to ask, but I have a question about character design.
I had the idea for a phoenix themed mage, and was considering having feathers growing alongside their hair. But my second thought was how I don’t know if that would be offensive to indigenous people.
If you don’t know the answer, do you know where I could learn?

The thing about feathers and character designs is that nowhere else uses feathers like we do and the silhouette is very unique to us specifically. Looking up feathers in character design or in specific cultures it always seems to come back to us good or bad. So in order use feathers in character designs you have to try not to use our silhouettes with the feathers. (Eagle feathers, head dress, brooches,bustles,ex.) I feel like people don’t understand the importance of feathers like each one you earn or is past down to you by family. During powwows and ceremonies if one falls off they have to completely stop the competition/ceremony and you are disqualified and you have to give away that feather because you disrespected it. And by law we are the only ones allowed to have eagle feathers 🤷‍♀️ it’s a religious thing not an aesthetic
I say consider what bird you wanna use, what they associated with, and use the feathers in a different manner silhouette wise. Like incorporating the bird’s silhouette and stuff. I like what the warrior cats fandom did and moved the feathers to the shoulders instead of head. Because yes we put feathers on our animals as well for the same reasons.

funniest item on my writing list rn is probably
“all might is a barista au”
and it is solely because of my father, the world’s biggest fan of bald might:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i mentioned playing java edition minecraft and he said something about coffee, which, because my minecraft skin is all might (see below), led to him making some joke about all might as a barista… you get the gist
Tumblr media
anyway idk anything about coffee or tea because i don’t drink either but catch me writing all might as a barista someday. dunno where dunno when dunno how but i will make good on my word

The common yarrow is a common plant across North America and can be found in the northern parts of Florida. It is popularly known for its healing properties and has historically been used to help treat many ailments and slow bleeding. The leaves are fern-like and feathery. The flowers are delicate and white, making it a super popular landscaping plant. When foraging, be careful to not get it confused with similarly looking plants like those belonging to the angelica genus which are toxic.
Place yarrow flowers under your pillow to bring good dreams. Drink tea made from the plant to bring health and healing. You can use this plant to identify your weaknesses or add into spells for love, courage, protection, and intuition.

Guide to Bones (Osteomancy Bone Recommendations)
In witchcraft, you might refer to this for things like spiritual jewelry, energy work, osteomancy, or spirit work! This was originally made for people who are researching osteomancy, though!
As an important disclaimer, please only retrieve bones ethically. It's really important that we're respecting the individual those bones come from, and that we're not disturbing the natural environment and communities around us. Animals are living beings too - Please do not disrespectfully hunt, harm, or kill any animal. I tried to choose animals that are easy to ethically source for purposes of this post, at least in my area or areas I've grown up in. Thank you!
Tumblr media
How does this guide help with osteomancy?
The energy of an individual may be left behind in their bones (same as pictures or other artifacts), even long after they’re gone. This energy can not only affect you if you choose to wear the bones, but also your readings! Additionally, many animists believe that the spirits of the animals’ bones you’re throwing are influencing the reading for you, as the bones are used as a connection to their spirits. In this sense, it’s important to understand core traits of the individuals whose bones you’re utilizing, because their energy or personalities (or characteristics in general) may shine through! Each individual is different, but your species does impact who you are, so I hope this helps!
Traits of the Animals / Bones
Duck:
Courage
Adventurous
Emotional Complexity
Deer:
Subtle
Keen & Perceptive
Fleeting
Squirrel:
Mischievous
Compassionate
Defensive
Frog:
Bold
Strategic
Social
Rabbit:
Curious
Independent
Playful

Performing a small spell tonight so just wanted to remind my witches out there that spellwork doesn't always have to be big and dramatic!
You don't need expensive herbs or materials.
You don't need hour long rituals and a thousand different steps.
You don't need to pour every ounce of your energy into it, if you can't afford it.
Spells can be as simple as an intention stirred into coffee, or a wish blown on a dandelion. Work within your means and perform your spells authentically. Don't let others online convince you that you need to do things their way.

welcome back to leanne mansplains english! this time it's how to differentiate between there, they're, and their/your and you're/its and it's etc. this is by no means complex in any way but it's just that everyone seems to just correct others and never explain why it's wrong lmfao.
also i've had this in my drafts for months because i was like this is basic shit. but some people don't know basic shit. native english speakers please stop fucking getting this wrong and non-native english speakers i hope this helps a little!!
ok so first. the most important thing to remember is that the apostrophe -> ' <- is there for a reason. it's used for contractions, which stems from the latin contrahere, which means to draw together. so basically it's used to COMBINE WORDS, at the position that they are combined. so whenever you see a word with an apostrophe, it means it's made up of more than one word.
you're = you are
it's = it is
they're = they are
should've = should have (it's would HAVE, should HAVE, and could HAVE, not OF***)
wouldn't've = would not have
y'all = you all (some people say "ya'll" and this is wrong: the word is combined after the "y" of "you", and so the apostrophe should come after this. "ya" is not a word)
it's not -> s'not (e.g. for slurred speech)
the apostrophe can also be used in place of omitted letters in a word, for example if someone has a particular accent:
everything -> everythin'
because -> 'cause
for their and your, just play with sentence structures a little. for example:
this is their/your bag -> the bag is theirs/yours.
the word should be able to fit in both instances, which does not work for 'they're/you're' or 'there' (the bag is they'res? there's? no ❌️)
'there' can just be identified in relation to 'where' and 'here' which just shows positioning. just think "here there everywhere" if you're confused. they all have the word 'here' in it

Just a reminder if you're writing a story of POC characters, especially native american characters, depicting us takes time and respect.
If they're in a modern environment, dont make them "normal" like white people are "normal".
Our cultures are very much alive and connected to us. It may be easy to give the characters long hair and a scene eating frybread, but tossing our culture when its not convenient isnt an option.
For example, the fanart and fanfic of Pavitr, aka spider India, whitewashed the hell out of him for convenience. Many ignored his connection to his culture in favor of a (colorist) feminine depiction of him in white centered beauty.
You need to understand how our cultures influence our way of life, and what culture you're representing.
It's not copy and pase from chad or Elizabeth, because our foundational upbringing shapes who we become. Please consider our cultures when writing poc and native characters.
