Cómo convertir un televisor en Smart TV: 11 dispositivos para ver Netflix, HBO, Prime Video y más

A estas alturas (finales de 2020 a la hora de escribir estas líneas) es muy complicado adquirir un televisor que no sea "inteligente". La gran mayoría de fabricantes implementan un sistema operativo y conectividad Wi-Fi para acceder a aplicaciones y servicios que requieren de Internet para funcionar, sobre todo los servicios de vídeo en streaming.

Aunque es muy común encontrar al menos una Smart TV en los hogares, todavía hay una gran cantidad de televisores capaces de reproducir contenido e imagen en 1080p (Full HD) que por su relativa antigüedad no disponen de capacidades "inteligentes" para iniciar/instalar aplicaciones y acceder a plataformas por Internet.

No es necesario renovarlos por modelos más recientes si se quiere disfrutar de Netflix, Prime Video, HBO o similares. Hay dispositivos, conocidos como set-top boxes, centros multimedia o dongles, todo dependiendo de su formato, que permiten acceder a su contenido. Solo es necesario una toma HDMI libre y un enchufe (o conector USB según el dispositivo).

Estos productos no solo son útiles en las "cajas tontas", sino que algunos fabricantes implementan sistemas operativos muy limitados en sus televisores y con pocas aplicaciones que no ofrecen la mejor experiencia de usuario (véase Philips con su SAPHI o Toshiba con su Smart Portal, por mencionar algunos ejemplos).

La importancia del ecosistema

Los dispositivos que permiten "convertir en inteligentes" a los televisores son ciertamente numerosos, pero el número de sistemas operativos disponible no es tan amplio. Todo se reduce a tres grandes propuestas: Android TV, Fire OS y tvOS. Mientras que el primero es desarrollado por Google y cualquier fabricante interesado puede usarlo en sus equipos, los dos últimos pertenecen a Amazon y Apple, respectivamente.

Es por esto que Android TV está presente en una mayor cantidad de dispositivos, y si se quiere la plataforma de Amazon hay que pasar por sus productos Fire, o en el caso de Apple por su Apple TV. Las tres cuentan más o menos con las mismas aplicaciones, o al menos con los servicios de vídeo en streaming más importantes.

El punto diferencial está en los equipos que poseamos. Si nuestro smartphone y tableta tienen Android, entonces la "simbiosis" con Android TV es muy interesante por la comunicación entre plataformas. Lo mismo ocurre si somos usuarios habituales de los servicios y productos de Amazon, como Prime Video y sus altavoces Echo, con los Fire TV, o si disponemos de un iPhone, iPad, Mac y preferimos el Apple TV.

No obstante, hay cierta armonía entre las propuestas de Amazon y Apple, al estar disponible la app Apple TV en los Fire TV, Apple Music en los altavoces con Alexa, y Prime Video y Amazon Music en el centro multimedia de los de Cupertino. En este caso, la compenetración con dispositivos con Android TV no es tan alta.

Ojo a los servicios

Hemos mencionado que las aplicaciones más populares suelen estar disponibles en las tres grandes plataformas. Y así es, pero con excepciones. Aquí la más perjudicada es, sin duda, los Fire TV de Amazon. Hasta hace no mucho no tenían app oficial del servicio de vídeo en streaming español Filmin, especializado en cine y series, con un catálogo muy interesante y amplio de producciones europeas. Y tampoco está disponible de forma oficial HBO, aunque hay vías alternativas de instalarlo y que no son muy complicadas.

Lo mismo sucedía hasta hace poco con el Apple TV, que no contaba con app oficial de Movistar+, pero que tras varios años de desarrollo ya es posible acceder a los contenidos de la plataforma sin pasar por el decodificador, Chromecast, Fire TV Stick o Xiaomi Mi Box S. Con esto no se quiere decir otra cosa que es importante comprobar qué servicios de los que utilizamos están disponibles en los diferentes dispositivos.

Si no tenemos exigencias por opciones muy de nicho (como puede ser Planet Horror, dedicada al cine de terror con muchos estrenos hasta el momento inéditos en España, y que solo está disponible en televisores de Samsung, los decodificadores de Orange y Vodafone, dispositivos móviles y ordenadores a través de navegadores web) y somos bastante clásicos, dependiendo principalmente de Netflix y Prime Video, no tendremos problemas de compatibilidad.

Una característica necesaria: el ajuste automático de fotogramas

El contenido audiovisual que consumimos está grabado en diferentes tasas de fotogramas, las cuales están expresadas como fotogramas por segundo (FPS). Se trata de la frecuencia a la cual un dispositivo muestra las imágenes. Hay tres grandes tasas de fotogramas por segundo: 24p, 25p y 30p.

24p: utilizado principalmente en películas. La industria cinematográfica lo estandarizó. Grabar con una tasa baja da la sensación de velocidad, mientras que si se utiliza una grabación más rápida genera una sensación de cámara más lenta cuando va a proyectarse la película. Como curiosidad, el cine mudo casero tenía una tasa de refresco de 16 o 18 fotogramas por segundo.

25p: esta tasa deriva del formato de televisión PAL, y se utiliza en empresas de televisión y productoras de cine que utilizan una tasa de 50 Hz en algunas regiones para mejorar la compatibilidad con el territorio en el que va a reproducirse. Es el que se utiliza en países como España.

30p: mientras que en España y la mayoría de países europeos se utiliza el 25p (50 Hz), en países de América como Estados Unidos o Canadá está estandarizado el 30p (60 Hz) NTSC.

Mientras que las aplicaciones integradas en los televisores (véase la app de Netflix o YouTube que el fabricante ya implementa) no suelen tener problemas para ajustar la tasa de fotogramas por segundo, cuando se usan dispositivos externos como el Fire TV Stick o la Nvidia Shield TV la experiencia suele diferir y no ser tan buena, produciendo el tan odiado "efecto Judder".

Se produce especialmente en películas reproducidas a 24 fps en pantallas que tienen una tasa de refresco de 50 Hz o 60 Hz porque no son múltiplos de 24. Este problema hace que se aprecien "tirones" y artefactos raros en pantalla, y es curioso que algunas personas son más sensibles a este efecto que otras.

Por suerte, hay maneras de solucionarlo en los televisores que no tienen sistemas operativos muy completos (véase Tizen de Samsung, WebOS de LG o Android TV de Sony, Philips (gama más alta), TCL, etc.). Una está en que el televisor tenga un panel con una tasa de refresco de 120 Hz, pero no es lo más habitual y suele darse en modelos de gama más alta, por lo que su precio no está al alcance de todo el mundo. Por suerte, cada vez hay más modelos "asequibles" que cuentan con esta tasa de refresco. La otra es que el dispositivo cuente con la característica de ajuste automático de fotogramas.

Esta función permite ajustar la frecuencia de actualización del dispositivo con la frecuencia de fotogramas original del contenido, evitando así el Judder y el Stutter. Aunque tanto Android TV como Fire OS y tvOS tienen APIs para que los desarrolladores lo implementen en las apps, en la práctica el que mejor resultado ofrece en este sentido es el Apple TV.

En los Fire TV Stick solo se aprovecha en Prime Video, Plex y Kodi, mientras que en Android TV solo en estos dos últimos. La culpa no es de los fabricantes de estos dispositivos, sino de los desarrolladores tras las aplicaciones. Apple lo ha implementado de tal manera que la mayoría de apps lo han acabado adoptando, y si bien en la gran mayoría funciona correctamente, debo decir que personalmente he tenido algún fallo con alguna que otra película de Filmin, aunque son casos muy puntuales.

Propuestas económicas para pasar de televisor "tonto" a Smart TV

Fire TV Stick - Lite

Una opción bastante barata viene de la mano de Amazon y son las versiones "básicas" o de entrada del Fire TV Stick. Este resulta un buen momento para hacerse con uno ya que la compañía los renovó hace unos días. En este escalón encontramos dos modelos, el Fire TV Stick "a secas" y el modelo Lite.

Ambos son casi igual de potentes y tienen las mismas características, permitiendo reproducir contenido en resolución Full HD 1080p compatible con HDR, HDR10+ y HLG, procesador de cuatro núcleos y 8 GB de almacenamiento interno. La principal diferencia que encontramos es que la versión Lite solo admite Dolby Audio (nada de Atmos) y no cuenta con control del sonido del televisor.

El precio entre ambos dispositivos se diferencia en 10 euros (29,99 euros para el Fire TV Stick Lite y 39,99 euros para el Fire TV Stick). ¿Mi recomendación? El Fire TV Stick, por comodidad para encender el televisor y controlar el volumen del sonido desde el mando del propio dispositivo.
