recently read the time magazine special edition “Star Trek: inside the most influential science fiction series ever” a good portion of it is stuff a lot of fans probably already know, but there was some info in there that was still new to me, and lots of gorgeous photos that were amazing to see in print, too, so still definitely an enjoyable read! (apart from a couple instances of weirdly superiority, bro-esque writing, but that only occurred in one of the articles, thankfully)

one thing I really enjoyed about the visual aspect of the magazine though was some of the costuming visuals! For example, these crisp shots show not only the tailoring and seams but literally the construction and stitching on the TMP era uniforms 😍😍 (check out the stitching on the sleeve ranks in particular!!!)

next up, some extremely cool science things I didn’t know about and love that they exist:

this shot is excellent both for De fans (me) and also for seamstresses and costumers (also me!) because of that excellent, and rare, shot of the back of a TOS women’s uniform with seams and construction visible… positively a seamstress dream!! such a good garment structuring reference 👏🏻

also, an up close on one of Quark’s outfits that shows definitively that this outerwear jacket is, in fact, rainbowy tweed!!, a fashion statement I vote we bring back:

speaking of— I wish they’d mentioned slash fic, The Premise, early fanfic mail chains etc waaay more than they did (and for that matter, highlight way more just how important and vital the women Trekkies were!) but hey, at least they mentioned Spirk shippers, along with other parts of the magazine mentioning queer and nonbinary+trans rep in trek. could’ve/should’ve been more, but—

anyways! It’s still a fun magazine to read through and has lots of fun images even if you’re already familiar with the stories. (did you know there used to be an Enterprise shaped landline phone you could buy? Steyr TMP

The Steyr TMP (Taktische Maschinenpistole/Tactical Machine Pistol) is a 9×19mm Parabellum caliber machine pistol manufactured by Steyr Mannlicher of Austria. The magazines come in 15 or 30 round detachable box types. A suppressor can also be fitted. Though originally intended to be used without a shoulder stock, an optional fixed stock was made available later.

The Steyr SPP (Special Purpose Pistol) is a semi-automatic variant of the TMP intended for civilian Markets. The TMP's barrel and barrel jacket lengths were increased slightly so there is a greater length of protruding jacket and barrel. The forward tactical pistol grip was also removed. It is large for a pistol and is constructed mainly from Polyamide 66. Now, they didn't just slap on an "SPP" and call it a day. The SPP got a bit of a makeover. They tweaked the barrel and barrel jacket, making them a bit longer for that extra oomph. It's all about that protruding jacket and barrel, giving it a distinctive look. K&L Lil-Compact

"Small smg designed for swiss law enforcement units and later being used as a primary weapon of around 1/3rd of the NATO tankmen, drivers and recon. Really good for supressing fire, but it's magazine sizes lead for some improvement. Next to no recoil though, so I guess something for something" - Weapon description

K&L Lil-Compact or just Lil Compact is a military autopistol in Dead Country. It is a swiss-made compact submachine gun (or more precisely, upgraded auto pistol) chambered in 9x19mm.

Design

Lil Compact's overall shape is relatively modern small-sized smg with collapsible stock and RIS rails on upper and both left and right parts of the gun. It has markings reading "K&L LC-9 AUTOPISTOL", "9mm", "NATO Standard Issue", "Kali & Barl Inc". Barrel is relatively short and has inner threads, which allow for it to accept barrel attachments. There is a section at the rear of the gun, that allows it to accept stocks (both full and collapsible). There are selector switches at both sides of the weapon allowing it moderate ambidexterity. Magazines look nearly the same, but they tend to be longer and with diffrent details. Color is light-dark grey with default sights having standard green dot design.

2. Performance

Lil Compact is one of the light-recoil firearms aviable to use. It's low recoil (top lowest recoil submachine guns belongs to Airsoft SMG, Harran 10MM and Leadsprayer 99) allows for most effective spray and pray tactic. The only problem is a small magazine with only 16 bullets, while 25 and 40 round magazines are relatively rare to find. Firerate also doesn't help, since it will chew through ammo rather quickly. Laser sights, muzzle brakes and supresssors help with lowering the accuracy more and making gun more precise. By default, there is no option for any grip options due to lack of any attachment point. This can be changed with some chassis options. Stocks can help with both accuracy and recoil management, but they add to the weapon's weight and lower the speed. Using 9x19mm it has it's ammo easy to find, since 9mm ammo is relatively common. This gun can also be dual wielded and it's performance is changed accordingly. Recommended to shoot in small bursts to preserve ammo when low on it's reserves.

3. Behind the scenes

Overall weapon's looks is blend of Stery TMP, MP9 with some parts inspired by custom aftermarket accessories for auto pistols like Micro Uzi, Mac-10 or Glock 18. Lil Compact stated to be produced in Switzerland, like MP9, adding more to it's influences. LC-9 markings make a nod to MP9. Stock and some custom parts look like those to Micro Uzi and Uzi Pro pistol, Glock pistols, Airsoft Ruger replicas and some aftermarket options for Mac-based firearms

Name comes from roblox game Dead Slate, where Lil Convict was original name for Uzi. Uzi used to be one of favourite weapons to use by the author in game when he was younger.

It's actually not fully stated, if Lil-Compact is actual weapon's name or the correct one is LC-9.

Name of the Lil Convict's manufacturer is a play on the word "Caliber" and real-life weapon making company "Brügger & Thomet". 

As a animation and drawing reference, author used a broken,spring-powered, cheap bb gun based off Mac-10. Textures also come from it, albeit partialy edited to add markings.

Hey, what is your process when making collages? How do you collect things for them, how do you decide on quotes and what to draw/paint on and such? I really enjoy them :)

Hello! That's a very good question, I do it so automatically that I'm not entirely sure myself — but since I caught myself in the middle of a cut-and-stick sketchbook session, let's dive into it.

First up, I collect scraps like a trash magpie. Always have done, always will. Any paper items that I enjoy the colour/shape/texture of. Nowadays I tend to enjoy things with bold primary colours or black and white, pages from old maths textbooks or encyclopedias, flyers from local exhibitions, fragile tape and shipping labels from parcels, scraps found on the floor, old shopping lists, slips of paper from inside medicine packets or covid tests etc, anything that jumps out at me.

I collect these things in the pocket at the back of my sketchbook, or in a drawer (I have a whole drawer dedicated to scraps — some picked up from six or seven years ago, and some from last week). I hoard them like some sort of paper-loving dragon.

Other things I like adding are washi tapes, stickers, cinema tickets, drawings (whether straight in the sketchbook or stuck in), and anything else flat enough to fit in there.

Here are a few older sketchbook pages (from about 2014) showing some other types of scraps I've collated and used, and I think you can see where my current style has grown from.

The second part of your question is: but how do I put them all together? Again it's pretty much instinctive by now, but here are a few things I look for:

- Do I have a theme for the page? Is there a central object I want to build around? For the recent star trek pages I shared here, I'd been to see TMP and TWOK at the cinema and glued my tickets into my sketchbook, so I knew I wanted to theme the page around them

- Is there a colour palette? Either I pick colours from my central object, or I decide on a colour palette myself. Nowadays I keep my colour palettes very limited - one or two bolder colours and a range of cream/white/black/grey - but previously I've set the palette as pastel rainbow colours for example, when those were the colours I was more drawn to

- What words, symbols or drawings do I want to add? This can be lyrics that have been stuck in my head or that fit the theme, phrases I've come up with, fragments of found poetry clipped from textbooks, drawings that fit the theme (e.g star trek screencap thumbnails in the first example), etc. They don't have to fit the theme perfectly, or make sense to an external viewer - the important thing is that *you* want them on your page

This image below is a fragment of an as-yet-incomplete page - in which I swatched some leftover watercolour paint onto the page, found it complimented the colour of a sticker from a parcel perfectly (the small circular sticker), then I added an interesting-looking image from an old encyclopedia, which reminded me of a line from a Mountain Goats song: "the low pressure system brings the breezes in", and I wrote out another line from that same song on kraft paper and stuck it in. So it makes sense to me, or maybe someone familiar with the song, but to the average viewer it just looks kinda cool and/or they enjoy the line I've written out.

Then the next thing is to stick everything together! I'll confess, I rarely do this in one sitting - I currently have multiple pages I'm working on, one started the other month and almost complete, one started two weeks ago, and one just started today. I add to it whenever I get an idea or find a scrap that fits. But I used to do the pages in one sitting, and that absolutely works too.

As to how I decide what goes where on the page, that's just intuitive! I've made collage-y type art for at least fifteen years now (and longer if you count playing 'cut and stick' with old magazines as a kid), and I've very much learnt what sort of compositions please me, and how to tell if something feels too cluttered or lopsided or too spacious. But the beauty of this part is it's all personal preference! Shuffle your scraps around before gluing them down, and see what works for you.

Sometimes I add text or drawings first and use scraps in between, sometimes I stick the scraps down first and fill the gaps with text or drawings - there's no one way to do it! And hey, if there's something you don't like, you can always tear it out or stick something over it, that's the joy of mixed media.

I have been a little AWOL (personal issues), but I am very happy to come back for 5 minutes to announce that my little poem "Lake House Lesbian" is on page 44 of this lit mag. Very cool and chill of me to not die of happiness right now.

Middle is a @tommybuilt TMP (FDE) in 10mm. . Bottom is a @hecklerandkoch USC converted to a UMP-45 SBR by @tommybuilt. . Now I just need to decide whether or not I want one in 9mm, despite not being a fan of the curved magazines. "Hey, what time do we need to meet up with your team tonight?" 

Luke scarfs down his bagel and hastily pulls out his phone, "3. We can chill for a bit." he mumbled with food in his mouth

Julie nodded and was about to finish the rest of her breakfast when something on Luke's phone caught her eye. 

She did a double take, "Wait is that-?" 

"What?" 

Julie snatched the phone out of his hand and pointed to his lock screen, the picture of them practically fornicating in that club that night, the one that had been on every gossip site and magazine, forcing her to have a very uncomfortable conversation with her dad about it… 

"Why is this your wallpaper?" she practically screeched. 

Instead of giving her a proper answer, Luke only smirked wolfishly. It was only until after he swallowed his waffles and being on the receiving end of probing glare from Julie that prompted an explanation.  

"So…” he started, “you've seen 'To All the Boys', right?"

She gaped at him, "That's- that should not be the first thing you see when you turn your phone on!" A cute candid of a cuddling couple was way different than this gross picture of them dancing. That was mostly for show anyway, but still!

Luke took his phone back, inspecting the wallpaper for longer than Julie was comfortable with. 

"I don't know..." he unlocked his phone, and pulled up the picture saved in his gallery, he pinched at the glass til the image of Julie, in all her skimpy dress glory, filled the screen- 

"I wouldn't mind seeing this everyday," 

Growling, she smacked him upside the head, "You pig." she whispered, face getting hot. 

Shit. She had forgotten herself. They were supposed to act like a loving couple, but thankfully they were in a secluded part of the cafe, much of the foliage obscuring them from camera view.

And thank goodness that the waitress didn't choose until now to walk in and refill their cups, and she forced herself to lay her head on his shoulder and look at him with much less frost in her stare than what was well deserved…
