I’m super curious because I’m wondering what the general mood is for everyone in UtR as the story progresses. I know Faber is having the worst time (defcon 5) but is everyone else having a Bad Time of it? I just imagine Kenneth being pretty even-keel the whole story I can’t imagine much pushing that man over the edge for very long.
Hi anon,
The reality is I can't say for sure (no chapter plan), but Kenneth is very even keel in general mostly because he is a very secure person. He had a stable upbringing, he has really good friends and relationships, and he's a pretty solid communicator.
That doesn't mean he won't get angry / disappointed / upset etc. but it does mean that when he does, the vast majority of the time he'll be very secure about that, and communicative, in a way that's not like, lashing out, etc. Kenneth is almost like the lighthouse/rock the story needs, because Caleb can be volatile around Faber, especially when he doesn't understand him. In a way, I feel like Kenneth anchors the story, which allows Faber and Caleb to not sort of have to rush to be the same themselves.
Ever since I brought him into the story I felt weirdly a lot more comfortable about a Faber/Caleb (or Faber/Caleb/Kenneth) end game!

Chasing Justice (Crime AU) First chapter: Case closed summary: The team went to Utah to catch a copycat just to learn that the case is not as easy as they believed... warning: murder, crime description, mention of abortion, graphic details of the murder, mention of suicide
Salt Lake City
The atmosphere on the plane was tense. Clara, Ryan and Dean were reading the notes that they’ve got from the Utah team and nothing was fitting to The Friday Reaper. It all looked like there’s a new killer who’s a follower but in his own and unique style. Elizabeth went with them to examine the body by herself to see if nothing was missed.
“Let’s sum up what we know so far and what’s our plan” Clara said and closed her files.
“The victim is Michael Wilson, age 20. He lived in Salt Lake City but originally he’s from Tucson, Arizona. Moved there with his boyfriend Clayton Keller. Student, worked in a bar. No sentences” Dean told them.
“He was shot in the head. Execution style. His shirt was ripped opened and the killer wrote The Friday Reaper #1 on his torso” Ryan added.
“Liz, what do you think about the body from the photos?” Clara asked her.
“Nothing special is showing up here. Looks like execution. He was definitely in a kneeling position when the shot was fired but I’ll tell you more after actually seeing body” Liza sighed and took off her glasses.
“Edward said that he’s gonna try to break Matthew to talk and help us but from the one interrogation I had with him, I know that he won’t say a word. It’s a game from him and he’s enjoying it” Clara massaged the sides of her head.
The team landed and in no time they arrived in the office. They were having files from their case in a box and looked for a desk to lay them. The whole office was running back and forth trying to catch the guy but it was a pure mess and nothing was in order. Clara looked around and noticed a man coming their way.
“You must be the team from New York. My name is Richard Smith and I’m the boss there” He pulled his hand and shook with everyone.
“My name is Clara Thorne and this is agent Ryan Archer, agent Dean Black and doctor Elizabeth Graves” She said and pointed at everyone.
“I won’t be helped there so I’ll ask straightforwardly. Where’s the body so I can look at it?” Liz asked.
“I’ll show you a morgue in a moment. First, let’s put you in our conference room. We have a board there with what we know so far” Richard let them into the room. “This is agent Marcus Wayne and agent Clarice Adams. Now let’s get you into the morgue” He said and went with Liz to the basement.
“Doctor Graves, this is Doctor Caleb Harris” Richard said. The doctors shook their hands in welcoming gesture.
“I need 5 minutes with the body and I’ll be gone” Liz said. She tied her hair into a ponytail and put the gloves on.
Carefully, Elizabeth pulled the sheet from the body and started looking at it. She notices that the wound had pieces of faber. Eyes were closed but after she opened them, she noticed that the victim was crying right before the shot. On his collarbone were marks from pushing him down. She realised that he was forced to be in a kneeling position.
“Can you give me a fleshlight?” Elizabeth asked Caleb. He quickly gave it to her and watched what she’s doing.
Liz pointed the light on the victim’s lower stomach. She spotted a wet spot that looked like a kiss. She grabbed a cotton swab and ran through the spot. It was oily and looked like a lip balm. She handed the stick to Caleb.
“I think we might have a killer’s DNA. There was a lip print and because he used a lip balm, we might have a chance with this” Liz said and took off her gloves. “Let’s get back upstairs to say the news to the team”
Richard opened the door for Liz and they entered the conference room. The whole team was deep into conversation about the victim.
“You have an incredible doctor right here” Richard started. “She found a new clue” Liz blushed at his words.
“On the victim’ stomach was a lip print, we might have DNA but the sample was small so I wouldn’t be too positive about it” Liz admitted.
“That’s great” Ryan said. “Coming back, did you talk with anyone?” He asked.
“We tried to contact Clayton, the victim’s boyfriend but he’s not answering our phone and he’s not at home” Clarice told them. This made the team suspicious.
“We need to find him and talk with him. He might be a person of interest” Clara told them and sat on the chair.
“We will find him. Michael was found in the park, two blocks from his work. We spoke with his coworkers and they said that he was coming that way back home” Marcus said.
“Did he have any enemies? Someone who might hurt him?” Clara asked and whispered to Dean to look closer to Clayton’ life.
“No. He was an outgoing person and everyone loved him. The customers adored him and the boss wanted to promote him to be a manager. In college he had no problems with others” Clarice said. “Who would want to hurt him?”
“We need to find out” Ryan said.
“I’ll interrupt you” Liz started. “Someone who he knew killed him. His eyes were glassy, he was crying before the shot. He was also forced to the position which means he trusted this person” Liz said.
“Do we know anything about the message on his body?” Clara asked.
“The person who wrote it is right handed which helps us in nothing. This was written with a red lipstick from MAC company in a shade Centre Of Attention. The bullet is from caliber .44. The shot was from close range” Marcus explained to them.
“I did a quick run about Clayton Keller. He’s 25, like Michael, he came to Salt Lake City from Tucson. He’s a mechanic and didn't finish high school. Family died in an unsolved massacre two years ago” Dean told them.
“Do you have something more about the massacre?” Clara asked curiously.
“His parents and two sisters were murdered in their house. Shot in the head. All of them were in bed when this happened. And listen to this, it was caliber .44” Dean added.
“We need to find Clayton” Clara said and grabbed the phone. “I’ll tell the information to Edward, maybe he’ll get something from Matthew about his connection to Clayton”
“I’ll put an arrest warrant for him” Richard said.
New York
Edward was walking through the corridor when he got the phone from Clara. He quickly went to the parking lot and drove to the prison where Matthew was sitting in the arrest. He wasn’t hoping for him to open up but he wished for his mistake and that he would say something to him unintentionally.
The guards knew why Edward is here and they let him through. He left his gun, badge and phone meaning that he was harmless against this psychopath. He wasn’t scared but there was something in Matthew that made him feel weird. He interrogated plenty of killers but he was different in the bad way of this word. He was sitting in the room, waiting for his arrival.
Matthew looked at him with a smirk. He knew why Edward showed up here. The guard took off his handcuffs and he sat in front of Edward. He didn’t say a word, he was studying his face like he was trying to read him.
“I’m guessing the first person showed up” Matthew started.
“What’s your plan? You have five murderers ready to strike? We're gonna catch them all” Edward told him.
“If my memory is correct, the first guy is in Salt Lake City. He’s an easy target” Matthew said and sat more comfortably on the chair.
“How can you be so sure about that?” Edward tried to get under his skin.
“He’s dumb. I tried to explain to this guy that he can’t kill anyone the same as he did in the past but he can’t listen. Your team is gonna get the pieces together. No fun with that” Matthew shrugged. “But the others are more calculated”
“What can you tell me about them?” Edward said.
“All I can tell you is that your team will be travelling across the country, maybe even Canada but the last guy… This one will be way more fun” Matthew laughed.
“How do you even find people like that?” Edward was shocked at his words.
“Internet. If you have a connection, you can find a lot of interesting things. Now, if you excuse me, it’s dinner time” Matthew stood up. “Have fun because I’m having and see you soon”
Just like that, Matthew left Edward dumbfounded. He was even more confused about the conversation than before. He didn’t know what to think about this whole situation. But he knew one thing, there’s gonna be way more murders they can’t prevent. Edward stepped out of the prison and immediately called Clara.
Salt Lake City
“You’re on speaker Edward” Clara said. Ears of everyone were focused.
“This sick bastard had this whole plan. I didn’t say anything about the murder and he knew that you’re in Salt Lake City. He said that you’ll quickly find this guy because he committed a similar murder in the past. There’s also bad information. He said that the next killers are more calculated” Edward signed and punched his steering wheel.
“So the clue five really means how many followers he has” Ryan said.
“And we have nothing to stop it. Dean, try to look into Matthew’ computer and phone. He said that he found those people through the internet, maybe you’ll be able to find any clues” Edward ordered.
“Yes sir” Dean responded.
“Catch this bastard and get back here because we have way more work with this case than we thought” Edward said and hung up.
“We need to find Clayton as soon as possible” Marcus stated.
“I put the arrest warrant, everyone’s searching for him in Salt Lake City and Utah. I also sent his photos to every airport and train station if he wanted to run away. We can’t do more for now so I propose to get back home and get back tomorrow at 8 am” Richard said.
Clara, Dean, Ryan and Elizabeth went to the hotel rooms. Everyone except Clara decided to get some sleep. She couldn’t. She wanted to solve the mystery and find those people before innocent people would die. She wanted justice. She read the files again and again hoping that she missed something. That she will find a key to solve this case. She didn’t even realise it was morning, until the sunlight came through her room. At that moment she just sighed and went to take a shower and get ready for another day and search for Clayton Keller.
The New York team arrived punctually at 8 am in the office and again, there was a mess like the day earlier. People were running around and they were completely lost. That’s why they decided to go to the conference room but they were stopped.
“Didn’t you hear? Clayton was spotted in the diner next to the airport” Clarice told them.
“What’s the plan?” Ryan asked.
“We’re going there now. We might not have a chance like that again. Marcus is watching him through the camera in the diner. He’s sitting there calmly, drinking coffee without any suspicious” Clarice explained to them.
“Okay, let’s go” Clara said.
The ride was nervous. They knew there were innocent people and they didn’t want to start shooting. They didn’t want a hostage situation either. It was risky but they knew they had to do it this way. They parked the car and went through the plan again.
“Ryan, you’re going there and watching Clayton. See if he has a gun with him and act clueless, like you don’t know who he is. Me and Clara will stay there and wait for your signal. After the signal, we are going there to capture him” Clarice said and they nodded.
Ryan walked calmly to the diner. At first, he didn’t look at Clayton. He ordered a coffee and turned around to see Clayton and the women behind the window. Carefully, Ryan’ eyes were scanning Clayton’ posture. He didn’t see a gun with him. Ryan nodded his head and Clara with Clarice walked into the diner. They stood behind Clayton and Clarice grabbed his arm.
“Walk with us without making any dumb moves you might regret” Clarice told him.
Clayton stood up and left the diner with the women. Ryan was following them. Clara handcuffed him and gave him the classic speech. His eyes were down, he didn’t say a word or spare them a look. They were surprised at this. They thought he’s gonna put up a fight but they were happy it ended up without any blood spatter.
Marcus tried to interrogate Clayton but he didn’t say a word. At the mention of Michael, he broke down in tears which surprised everyone. After a couple minutes, he calmed down and said that he’ll confess to everything if they give him a piece of paper and pen. Team agreed on his terms and gave it to him.
An hour went by and Clayton’ confession was finished. He signed it and the agents took him to the cell. In the conference room, Richard was reading his confession while other agents were packing the documents into the boxes. The atmosphere was way more relaxed than yesterday.
“Clayton admitted to killing his parents who didn’t accept the fact that he’s gay. He wrote that he killed his sisters because he didn’t want them to grow up without parents. He also wrote that he met The Friday Reaper on some kind of dark web network and he manipulated him to kill someone when he’s gonna be locked up. He didn’t know who to kill so he killed his boyfriend but he felt remorse and that’s why he let us catch him” Richard ended up.
“Can we have a copy of this note? We’ll add this to the files of Matthew Rempe and add another charge” Clara asked and Richard went to make a copy for them.
“You know it’s tragic. Clayton loved Michael but he got manipulated to this point that he killed him” Liz said.
“That doesn’t change the fact that he killed 5 people” Marcus responded.
Richard returned and handed the copy to Ryan. He put it on top of the files and closed the box.
“It was a pleasure to work with you guys but I hope we won’t meet again in this situation” Richard joked and shook everyone’s hand. “Have a nice flight back home and good luck with the rest of psycho out there”
New York
The next day, the team returned to the office and sat down to write reports from Salt Lake City. When they were finished, Edward called them to his office. They had bad feelings that another murderer woke up and they had another case to solve. Dean closed the door behind them and Edward sighed loudly.
“Clayton is dead. He committed suicide in the prison cell. He had under his tongue a pill with poison” Edward told them. The whole team looked at each other shocked.
“We still have his confession on paper where he’s blaming Matthew Rempe for this” Ryan said.
“And his lawyers can easily manipulate it. Clayton is dead so he can’t confirm that what he wrote is true. This confession is useless. To make it worse, I got a letter from prison. Matthew sent us a letter” Edward said and gave the envelope to Clara. She opened the letter and started reading.
“Such a shame that Clayton is dead. One down, four more to go. Are you ready for another trip?” Clara read the note.
“I hate this guy” Ryan said and started pounding around the room.
“So far, we have no new murders linked to The Friday Reaper so focus on current cases and Dean, try to track down the network” Edward dismissed the team.
Two months later
“Everyone in my office, now” Edward said furiously. The team in no time gathered there. “Another murder. This time in Toronto. The victim had card in her mouth with The Friday Reaper #2” He told them.
Clara, Ryan and Dean didn’t say a word. They just nodded and left the office getting ready to go to Canada.

Independent publishers dominate Swansea shortlist
The shortlist for the world’s largest and most prestigious literary prize for young writers – the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize – has been revealed, featuring six emerging voices whose writing plays with formal inventiveness to explore the timeless themes of grief, identity and family.
Comprising of four novels, one short story collection and one poetry collection – with five titles belonging to independent publishers – this year’s international shortlist is:
A Spell of Good Things by Ayòbámi Adébáyò (Canongate Books) – novel (Nigeria)
Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson (Viking, Penguin Random House UK) – novel (UK/Ghana)
The Glutton by AK Blakemore (Granta) – novel (England, UK)
Bright Fear by Mary Jean Chan (Faber & Faber) – poetry collection (Hong Kong)
Local Fires by Joshua Jones (Parthian Books) – short story collection (Wales, UK)
Biography of X by Catherine Lacey (Granta) – novel (US)
Worth £20,000, this global accolade recognizes exceptional literary talent aged 39 or under, celebrating the international world of fiction in all its forms including poetry, novels, short stories and drama. The prize is named after the Swansea-born writer Dylan Thomas and celebrates his 39 years of creativity and productivity. The prize invokes his memory to support the writers of today, nurture the talents of tomorrow, and celebrate international literary excellence.
Namita Gokhale, chair of Judges, said: “The Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize has an important role to play in recognizing, supporting and nurturing young writers across a rich diversity of locations and genres. The 2024 shortlist has authors from the United States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Nigeria and Ghana, and it has been a truly rewarding adventure to immersively read through this creative spectrum of voices.”
The only debut on this year’s shortlist is the astonishing new Welsh talent Joshua Jones, who is in the running for his highly acclaimed short story collection Local Fires – a stunning series of multifaceted stories inspired by real people and real events that took place in his hometown of Llanelli, South Wales.
The sole poet in contention this year is Mary Jean Chan – who was previously shortlisted for the Prize with their debut Fleche in 2020 – and is now recognized for the collection Bright Fear, which fearlessly explores themes of identity, multilingualism and postcolonial legacy.
Three of the four novelists have also gained their second nomination for the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize: British-Ghanaian author Caleb Azumah Nelson is in contention for his second novel, Small Worlds, in which he travels from South London to Ghana and back again over the course of three summers to tell an intimate father-son story exploring the worlds we build for ourselves; Nigerian novelist Ayòbámi Adébáyò is shortlisted for her dazzling story of modern Nigeria, A Spell of Good Things, and two families caught in the riptides of wealth, power, romantic obsession and political corruption; and US author Catherine Lacey is celebrated for the genre-bending Biography of X, a roaring epic and ambitious novel chronicling the life, times and secrets of a notorious artist.
Completing the shortlist is British novelist AK Blakemore, recognized for her darkly exuberant novel The Glutton, which – set to the backdrop of Revolutionary France – is based on the true story of a peasant turned freakshow attraction.
The 2024 shortlist was selected by a judging panel chaired by writer and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival, Namita Gokhale, alongside author and lecturer in Creative Writing at Swansea University, Jon Gower, winner of the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature in 2022 and Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Seán Hewitt, former BBC Gulf Correspondent and author of Telling Tales: An Oral History of Dubai, Julia Wheeler, and interdisciplinary artist and author of Keeping the House, Tice Cin.
The winner of the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize 2024 will be revealed at a ceremony held in Swansea on 16 May, following International Dylan Thomas Day on 14 May.
Previous winners include Arinze Ifeakandu, Patricia Lockwood, Max Porter, Raven Leilani, Bryan Washington, Guy Gunaratne, and Kayo Chingonyi.

I’m sorry, do we have to wait 200000 words for Caleb to actually start getting through to Faber or pushing him enough to get that relationship going (the tags) 😭 I don’t think I’m prepared for all that angst I can already feel how much UtR is going to hurt 🫣
Hi anon,
I was joking like a little bit, but I also don't have Underline the Red plotted, more realistically it will be... *takes a breath* 80-100k before we start seeing some decent kind of inroads re: Caleb again.
This is one of the reasons why Kenneth's role in the story is going to be so important.
Tbh, this doesn't surprise me for my slow burns. It takes Gary and Efnisien in Underline the Black, much longer than 100k to like, start becoming sexual with one another.
But I'm also not at all shy about saying that the angst levels in Underline the Red are HIGH. One of the reasons it's had the least regular schedule is because I knew that when we really start getting stuck into it, asking folks to wait forever through such high angst (because it's about to get way, way higher) is unfair, so I've been moving more slowly through these initial chapters.
Underline the Red is due to take over as my 'updates 3 times a month' story after Underline the Black is finished. So I'm trying to time it as much as possible in a way that means by the time we hit the worst of the angst, no one will be waiting long for chapters anymore. How much Red is going to hurt has actually very strongly determined how many chapters I've released since it started. It's been waiting for its time to shine.
#asks and answers#it's going to be a thorny read i think#but i'm hoping that means the comfort payoffs#of which there will be plenty#feel really satisfying down the track#underline the red#faber castle#kenneth leone#caleb crawford#and now i gotta put my dog in his harness for his groom#aslkfjsdafa

Tour de France 2019: Egan Bernal wins, Geraint Thomas second, Peter Sagan wins in Paris

Tour de France 2019: Egan Bernal wins, Geraint Thomas second, Peter Sagan wins in Paris

Bernal (centre) with the six team-mates who helped him win the race – GB’s Luke Rowe was disqualified from the race on stage 17
Egan Bernal became the youngest rider in 110 years to win the Tour de France after Caleb Ewan won the traditional sprint finish in Paris.
With the race leader not challenged on the final stage, 22-year-old Bernal became the first Colombian winner.
He crossed the line in the peloton, hand-in-hand with his Ineos team-mate and last year’s winner Geraint Thomas, who finished second this time.
“To finish second behind a team-mate makes it OK,” said Welshman Thomas.
“Two years ago I had my arm in a sling with a broken collarbone watching Chris Froome win, wishing I was riding and I would’ve taken second then, but it just shows how time and expectations have moved on.
“Egan is the future and when I’m 45 and old and fat and sat in the pub watching him win a 10th Tour de France I can say I told him all I know.”
Thomas went into the three-week race as joint leader with Bernal but his preparations had been disrupted when he crashed while travelling at around 50mph in the Tour de Suisse in June.
He had to abandon that week-long race and then he had three minor crashes during this year’s Tour.
Thomas led Bernal for much of the race but his team-mate was stronger in the final week in the Alps, and ended up winning by one minute 11 seconds, with Dutch rider Steven Kruijswijk 20 seconds further adrift in third.
“Thanks to all my team and thank you G [Geraint Thomas] for giving me the opportunity,” said Bernal. “I’m the happiest guy in the world. I have just won the Tour de France and I can’t believe it.”
Bernal’s victory is the seventh in eight years for a British-based team, after Ineos took over the ownership of the Team Sky squad earlier this year.
Bradley Wiggins became the first British winner of the race in 2012, with Chris Froome triumphing in 2013 and then claiming three in succession from 2015 before Thomas took last year’s title.
Bernal is just the third Colombian to win one of cycling’s three Grand Tours. Nairo Quintana won the 2014 Giro d’Italia and 2016 Vuelta a Espana, while Luis Herera won the Vuelta in 1987.
How the final stage unfolded
Caleb Ewan’s victory in Paris followed his sprint success on stage 16 in Nimes
A largely pedestrian 60km ride from Rambouillet to Paris saw Bernal and his Ineos team-mates sipping a celebratory glass of champagne.
As the riders entered the capital city, the race crossed the river Seine via Le Pont Neuf, close to the medieval cathedral of Notre-Dame – French television chose not to show the building that was ravaged by fire in April – before the riders swept through the grounds of the Louvre.
Last year’s champion Thomas was given the honour of leading the peloton through the Place de la Concorde and up the cobbles of the Champs-Elysees for the first time.
The pace increased with the passing of each 7km lap, which saw the riders swing round the Arc de Triomphe before hurtling back down the Champs-Elysees at speeds approaching 50mph before heading off back towards the Louvre.
Julian Alaphilippe, who led the race for 14 days, giving French fans hope of first home win since 1985, led the peloton on to the Champs-Elysees for the final time, trying to set up a victory for his Deceuninck Quick Step team-mate Elia Viviani, however, the Italian was nowhere as Lotto Soudal rider Ewan proved quickest in Paris.
The Australian, who timed his charge to the line to perfection, edging out Dutch rider Dylan Groenewegen to win his third stage on his debut Tour, said: “It was quite messy I went down the right, I’d been told to avoid there and it is quite bumpy but luckily I had enough speed to come through at the end.”
For Alaphilippe, who finished fifth overall, there was the consolation of being named the race’s most combatitive rider, while his compatriot Romain Bardet claimed the polka dot King of the Mountains jersey.
Slovakia’s three-time world champion Peter Sagan won the green points jersey for a record seventh time.
Why Bernal’s victory is not a surprise
Bernal (right) was a key domestique for Thomas when he won his Tour title last year
The climbing specialist, who was born on 13 January, 1997 in Zipaquira in central Colombia at an altitude of 2,650m, showed his potential at last year’s Tour, when he rode as a domestique to Thomas and four-time champion Chris Froome.
After pacing Thomas to victory on Alpe d’Huez and ultimately the overall title, Froome said: “He’s got an amazing engine. You only have to look at what he did on Alpe d’Huez, for a 21-year-old, that’s amazing.
“There is a lot in Egan that reminds me of myself when I was younger. It’s great having him on the team and he brings a lot of young, new energy to the group.”
He joined Team Sky for the 2018 season, after winning the prestigious Tour de l’Avenir – a stage race for under-23 riders that has seen many of its winners go on to Tour de France success.
He won the Tour Colombia and Tour of California last year before making his Tour de France debut as a domestique to Thomas and four-time winner Froome.
This year, three crashes helped Bernal arrive at the Tour as joint leader of the Ineos team, formerly Team Sky.
The first was his own, on a training ride in Andorra, and it ruled him out of May’s Giro d’Italia, where he had been due to lead the team for the first time in a Grand Tour.
Froome’s season-ending crash at June’s Criterium du Dauphine then pushed Bernal up the Ineos pecking order for the Tour de France, while Thomas’ spill at the Tour de Suisse later that month saw Bernal take over as the sole leader of that team and he went on to win the race.
After riding away from Thomas on the Tourmalet on stage 14 in the Pyrenees, he did so twice again in the Alps in the final week to position himself as Ineos’ strongest rider at the Tour and secure his first Grand Tour win in only his second attempt.
Bernal is the third youngest winner of the Tour. The youngest is France’s Henri Cornet, who was 19 when he was controversially awarded victory in the second edition of the race in 1904, while Luxembourg’s Francois Faber was a few days younger than Bernal when he took the 1909 title.

I'm loving Underline the Red so far!! I live for angst, and Faber has so much of it! I was wondering if we would ever get any chapters from Caleb or Kenneth's perspective? I'm so curious about what's going on in other characters' heads and how they see Faber. I'm also so very curious about how Temsem will react to Faber feeling like an omega since he was the first person to accept Efnisien as an alpha. Will he also be as supportive to Faber as he was to Efnisien? Anyway, I loved the new chapter, Faber has a friend now!! And I love Kenneth already. He's so good for Faber!!! Ahgghhghajg I love your writing so much!!! 🩷🩷
I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I'm really looking forward to stepping things up in Underline the Red, such a huge journey for Faber to go on!
As for Caleb or Kenneth perspectives, I'm not sure. At the moment there aren't any, but I'm not ruling it out. If I do write another POV, it will probably be just one of theirs, possibly Kenneth's. But again, not sure! I definitely think it will be hard to get through this story without either Caleb or Kenneth's perspective because Faber is such an unreliable narrator. And also because who Caleb is most of the time, is someone we've actually never seen before. And I think it'd be fun to see Kenneth's observations because he sees so much more than he lets on.
I'm also so very curious about how Temsem will react to Faber feeling like an omega since he was the first person to accept Efnisien as an alpha. Will he also be as supportive to Faber as he was to Efnisien?
*coughs* This is a spoiler but sdlkfjas definitely not. The beta bigotry is real.

So much happened in the new chapter for UtR what a roller coaster. I’m curious as to what Caleb was thinking through this conversation because being in Faber’s pov feels like the mental equivalent of having three pair of sunglasses on and trying to describe a painting you’ve never seen before.
That image made me laugh when I imagined it, because like, yeah, Faber's POV really is so opaque. He's hiding from his past, he's hiding from his emotions, he's hiding from his thoughts, he's trying to filter what's happening with Caleb through all of that.
It's like listening to a radio station underwater while wearing earplugs (though I like your analogy more, lmao).
As for Caleb, honestly, I think he's been aware of a growing concern towards Faber's treatment of him, and not really knowing what to do with that. It's come to a head where he's like 'if this person really thinks I abused him, I'd rather know so we can do something about that via a professional track (like human resources / counseling / whatever works) instead of dealing with sniping and personal attacks any time I talk to him. I still like this guy, even though he's actually treated me terribly since we started working at Hillview, and it's possible I've been wrong about him all along, but I'd like to think he's a good guy and maybe he actually thinks I'm the monster. But either way, I can no longer accept personal attacks on my ability to do my job.'
I do think he wasn't making the complaint to make Faber talk to him, as generous an interpretation as this is! I think he wanted to genuinely make a complaint, and to have it in writing so it doesn't become a 'he said / he said' style argument down the track, and so that there's a paper trail in case this needs to be escalated. From Caleb's perspective, it's been four years and he really doesn't understand why Faber has such a chip on his shoulder about him.
I think, as well, Caleb's genuinely like 'well, maybe I was abusive in a way I didn't understand to Faber, but that still doesn't impact my ability to do my job well, and if he has an issue with me, he should bring it up with me instead of attacking me in front of my boss, which is the opposite of what a professional person would do.'
And, honestly, I think Caleb's also sick of his own responses re: sniping back at Faber. That's why he does make it professional and polite, and books a meeting and a meeting room, and makes it not at all about little potshots in text messages, and instead tries to do everything above board.
But man, Faber is really good at dragging Caleb back into not being professional with him. Caleb's hanging on by a thread here trying to make sure everything is professional, meanwhile the most Vulnerable Tortured Man In The World is begging him to let Faber keep his job, and Caleb's like 'what do I doooooooooo.'
Idk he's trying

Hey, I just got back from reading chapter 9 of Underline The Red! I don't know if this is too spoilery, but do you have any potential conflicts with Caleb over Kenneth in store? It's something I wondered about since he's been introduced! ^J^
Hello!!
I'm answering this one not privately because I think it would be helpful to a lot of people!
The first answer is very honestly - I can't say for sure, because I'm not working to a chapter plan.
The second is that it's likely there will be some conflicts between Caleb over Kenneth, but that I think they will be quite respectful when they come up. There's a really interesting power dynamic I get to set up here which really helps in the future, which is that Caleb meets Kenneth first as his student, and Kenneth is his teacher, who Caleb has to yield respect and time to, and be humble around, because he is learning from him.
So Caleb must come to Kenneth in the plot first, from a position of grace and yielding (as an alpha yielding to the superior knowledge of a beta), and consultation.
And this sets them up really well honestly when it comes to Faber, because it means Caleb isn't automatically used to throwing his weight around with Kenneth, or being immature around him, or even possessive around him. Because they were consulting literally over someone Caleb was bonded to, and Caleb couldn't afford to be possessive and hostile in those moments.
So while I foresee that there will be conflicts because I'm me and I write the stories I write, there is already an interesting power dynamic in place between Kenneth and Caleb to shield them and all of us from the worst kinds of conflicts.
I think the biggest sticking point between them will mostly be Kenneth being concerned for how Caleb has treated Faber in the past, and how he might treat him in the future. But Caleb is actually a pretty thoughtful, compassionate guy, he's good at taking things on board once he is actually given knowledge, even if it's 'how dare you hurt him that way' knowledge. I'm actually really looking forward to showing the more mature sides of Caleb's personality!

I am deeply invested in Faber's story. Is it bad that I've got a growing seed of anger towards Gary for never realizing how much hurt Faber carries? He sees him everyday! And I know they've got a lot going on but even Efnisien could see something bad had to have happened to him while he was missing. My only solace is that Caleb is around and omega-less so hopefully he can be there to support Faber? I hope? (Please reassure me Faber gets a happy ending) #teamfaberdeserveshappiness
Anon that's not bad at all!
I mean, Gary's basically going to be an antagonist for at least some of Underline the Red, and beta bigotry is a real thing that Faber's experienced at the hands of Temsen, and Gary, etc.
Gary is extremely distracted though, and also his heart isn't doing so great so it's hard for him to even focus on Efnisien's care goodness Gary hope you don't have another heart attack
As for Caleb being omegaless, the reality is that Faber very rarely wants support and actively fights it off. His worst nightmare would be people realising he was in a crisis, and trying to help him. That's why he's bald-faced lying to literally everyone there. Not because he secretly desires to be rescued, but because people noticing his pain is one of his worst personal nightmares that he tries to avoid at any cost.
Caleb has tried to help Faber a few times in Underline the Red since they started to work together, and each time Faber has often gotten so openly hostile in response, Caleb's ended up hurt and/or hurting Faber.
It's...going to take more than a situation like this for Faber to accept some forced comfort, tbh.
