I know I predicted radio silence from me...But I had what I think is a cool idea and wanted to share it before anything gets disproven in the next episode (Brief, singular mention of the Eden!Culprit theory).

So, I saw a lot of people talking about the Arei-Eden parallels, and the Ace-Arei parallels (and differences), and the Min-Eden parallels in the hug scene...Because of that, I started thinking about how Eden and Ace relate to all the others. And then I remembered the very obvious Teruko-Ace parallels.

Ace and Teruko both trusted someone who betrayed them in one way or another. Teruko with...Well, everyone, and especially Min, and Ace with Levi. In chapter two, they're both pretty similar, being closed-off and trying to not care about others with varying degrees of success. And, of course, Ace almost dies just like Teruko did, in an attempted murder.

All those things are fairly obvious, especially them being the only participants to be almost-victims. And I'd always noticed that, but it got me thinking...

In chapter one, Teruko was the victim of an attempted murder, surviving on the pure luck of the knife just-so-happening to miss anything vital in her abdomen. Then, instead of sympathy for her life almost being taken, people are upset with/suspicious of her because they think she was the one who killed Xander. And that fact is no fault of Teruko's, she just had the misfortune of being at the scene of the crime (and Min moving the evidence to further incriminate her). Barely anyone asks if she's okay or shows much concern other than Min, who betrays her, and Eden. She is then forced to defend herself in the trial almost completely alone until finally some others start to come to her defense.

In chapter two, Ace has been put in the position of being the victim of a murder attempt but surviving through the pure luck of Eden and Teruko just-so-happening to come to the second floor late at night. If Teruko hadn't happened to forget her clothes on the second floor, chances are that Ace would be dead. No one feels sorry for what Ace went through, because he was a total asshole to Nico and along with no one taking him seriously to begin with, they think he, in a way, had it coming, trauma and injuries be damned. Now, he is forced to defend himself, presumably alone unless Levi decides he wants to help and be the Eden equivalent. And Ace has been blamed for Arei's death not through any fault of his own, but because he had the misfortune of being at the scene of the crime, where someone else tried to murder him.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it would honestly be pretty cool if Ace finished this chapter going through rather similar events to the ones Teruko experienced last chapter. Some people say that Ace being her parallel will show her during this chapter that distrusting isn't the right way to go, but he doesn't have to die to show her that at this very moment. Hell, it might hit even harder if he manages to go through everything she did, since it would make them even more similar.

Plus, if Eden is the Min parallel, and Ace is the Teruko parallel, that's pretty dang cool! Of course, if Ace does all the Teruko stuff during the trial, it makes sense for Eden to have done all the Min stuff...And I mean, the episode seems to be saying that's depressingly possible, so maybe.

So yeah, I just thought Ace and Teruko's similarities continuing into the trial would be fun. After all, he's been pretty consistent about following in her footsteps so far, so you never know. Like imagine if he says a protag line or something it'd be hilarious. Especially if all his points during his defense are like Teruko's, but with an Ace-y twist that makes them more funny or stupid or whatever. Fun!

Or who knows, maybe Ace will just hire David as his defense attorney, since he's the only one to have successfully defended Ace so far. /j

Oh yea right and I forgot to add that komaru’s response to seeing people get brutally murdered isn’t just ‘damn that sucks. Anyways’ bc very few characters have realistic reactions to the death of a loved one or someone they knew. Aoi, taka, fuyuhiko and hiyoko are the only ones I can really think of in the mainline games (I haven’t gotten around to playing v3 yet) who actually seem to care a lot about it, hiyoko the most imo. I do actually like hiyoko a lot because 1. She calls out mikan and is right about it and 2. Uses mahiru’s death as a motivation to become more independent and get along with people in her honour

I'd argue Akane belongs on that list too, only because she's established as being someone who grew up finding dead bodies on a regular basis and still managed to show more grief for Nekomaru's death than most of the THH cast did in the entire game :/ but yeah Komaru is 100% the most realistic of the protags, and has the best character growth out of them, including the V3 one (though I'd say that one takes an easy 2nd)

I so wish Hiyoko had been in the surviving cast, or at the very least didn't follow in Taka's footsteps in being the overshadowed Other Victim of chapter 3. There was so much wasted potential there

drew my Dragon Age protags as kiddos bc i was thinking about their childhoods

they're all about 9-10 years old here (the twins are around 5?)

anyway, y'all know the drill, i ramble about them under the cut

from left to right:

Marian Hawke - pretty much the only one who grew up poor among my three protags. most of her time was spent looking after her siblings (ie, screaming at bullies who even so much as look at them wrong). with so little free time to herself, her hair was always a mess; the only times she did anything with it is when bethany wanted to play hairdresser. her clothes had spots of patchwork, as she was just learning how to sew. the bandage on her arm was probably from some time she had to pull carver out of some dangerous situation. and she hadn’t quite learned her signature healing magic yet.

Hildegarde Trevelyan - grew up wealthy, but very sheltered. she had precious few friends as a child, and spent most of her time either with her father or in the Trevelyan estate's library. on the few occasions her father tried to get her half-siblings to spend time with her, she was normally relegated to reading a book in the training yards while they played at being soldiers. this was a couple of years before her magic manifested and she was sent to the Ostwick Circle. and, of course, because she hadn’t been physically through the fade yet, her hair was still its natural brown, not silvery white.

Fiora Cousland - also grew up wealthy, and extremely spoiled. she spent most of her childhood rough-housing with her brother Fergus and playing pranks on visiting nobles. she's still at the age where she hates dolling up all fancy for guests, and would much rather run wild through Castle Cousland, to her mother's chagrin. despite this, she was eager to follow in her mother's footsteps as a great archer, and practiced shooting whenever she had a free moment between her lessons and games.

I watched hunter x hunter waaaay back when and Ive been on the fence about trying it again now that they've done a shiny new one. I don't remember much about it tbh, except the creepy clown dude, but it does look very good in the gifs you reblog. What draws you to it, and what keeps you coming back?

I haven't seen the 1999 anime, nor do I care to because I'm not a fan of the animation style, so this is all relating to the 2011 anime + some of the manga.

Unrelated but interesting note Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, and I just find this infinitely amusing as a Sailor Moon fan.

Now I wasn't really expecting much from Hunter x Hunter when I started it, which was at the recommendation of @cursedwithgloriouspurpose and we watched it together after she moved up here last year.

It starts off as a pretty quintessential shonen anime, following Gon who is 12 and oddly powerful and going to become a professional "Hunter" in his world... who are basically super powerful (and marginally insane) people who have a "I can do what I want" license. He wants to do this to follow in his father's footsteps and possibly find him, since his dad left Gon with his aunt when he was a baby and never came back (fuck Gon's dad).

They have specialties and track dangerous/rare beasts, dangerous people, treasures... just like shit "normal" people can't or won't. There are villains. There's something called "nen" which gives you like super powers.

The test to become a Hunter is incredibly difficult for multiple reasons, and the first arc is Gon's progression through the Hunter Exams.

It's very shonen and fun. Gon makes friends with three other people taking the exam: Kurapika, Leorio, and Killua. Who all have their own reasons for becoming Hunters. Being: revenge. to make money to become a doctor. and just cuz lol.

The story progresses out of the hunter exams, to an arc about Killua and his family, to finding Gon's dad and following a test he left for Gon, to other things that are best experienced rather than explained.

WHAT I LOVE about HxH and what keeps drawing me back is how at face value early on it's your average shonen BUT once we start to get into the story you see how much Togashi set out to subvert usual shonen tropes.

Gon is reckless and brash, as most shonen protags are (think Goku from DBZ and Luffy from One Piece, he fits with them quite well in a lot of ways), he cares deeply for his friends, and I suppose if you took him at face value could be considered a "boy scout" type.

HOWEVER, the story shows time and time again the consequences for Gon's selfishness, how that affects himself and those around him (especially his best friend, Killua). The way Togashi delves into the tropes and explores them is very refreshing. He gets into a lot of very deep topics and deals with them in a nuanced way that you don't see in a lot of media.

Gon is shown in a negative light at times - not just in a "you fucked up" or "you failed" kind of way, but in legitimately detrimental and often hurtful way. He's shown at first to be careless when it comes to his own safety because of his stubborn pride, and then the safety of those closest to him. At his core Gon is selfish, and that can lead to some disastrous things.

The show gets REALLY heavy in the later arcs, and deals with a lot of heavy emotions and ideas and continues to do it so well. SO WELL. I cannot fully explain how much I love the nuance of this show.

I want to say more, but I don't want to spoil things if y'all do watch it.

Just know that this show surprised me, engaged me, and also totally ruined me in all the best ways possible.

1. You were cursed by an evil curse guy and now your WIPs have to change genre. What new genre do you pick for them? What does that change about the story and characters?

i'm gonna answer question 1 for Skyfish with a couple of genre ideas :D (because i love to put the skyfish crew into Situations)

tokusatsu-style superhero story (a la kamen rider, because i love kamen rider and may or may not have an au for skyfish in the works)

it would focus on the school trio (being kep, kon, and snake eyes). the main protag would probably still be kep (he's has the toku protag vibes! would and does everything to help people first and foremost) but i think it would have dual pov between kep and snake eyes!

kep would still be working with spades as a jack-of-all-trades, but this time with the addition of cricket and nobody (they'd be the ones hiding the base), and he'd already've been the hero for a while (maybe working to find out the truth about what happened to his mother? this isn't really a concern in Skyfish). snake eyes would be seeking revenge after his brother was killed (though if it was by one of the monsters-of-the-week or someone in the upper city remains to be seen), and would probably have become a hero with the help of kon (still a journalist, still a toku fan) and its (unnamed) shady medic/lauderette owner friend. snake eyes runs into kep in the mask, kon runs into kep outside of the mask, cue identity shenanigans.

idk if the skyfish would be more of a thing in this version (in Skyfish they're not really plot-relevant)– ie. related to the monsters-of-the-week or what the powers are based off of– but i do know that the upper city-narrows divide would be very much emphasised! snake eyes' mum (and maybe the Skyfaring Commission as a whole?) would probably be the main villain (because i think snake eyes doesn't already have enough of a terrible familial situation in Skyfish proper).

2. mecha? ish? it's more like the background of a mecha story

the further away from the skyfish planet one gets, the more monstrous and large the skyfish become– and these giant skyfish (which design-wise would be based on deep-sea creatures) would have been causing the planet a Problem (ie. eating passing ships or attacking it) which requires the use of mechs for a While (enough so that mech pilot is a desirable position).

as background, snake eyes' mum was a pilot before retiring and taking on a more ordering-people-around (i forgot what the word is. i'm tired :')) position when she gave birth to snake eyes' brother. she's still a mix of distant-bordering-on-neglectful and with extremely high expectations for her children, but this time with the expectation that they'd follow in her footsteps and become pilots themselves (meaning her children spent a Lot of their childhoods in preparation/training, regardless of what they actually wanted to do). snake eyes/minnow ran away from home a couple years before the story starts, though for some reason his brother never decided to search from him.

kep's parents both worked with/around the mechs, kep's dad still being an astral cartographer and kep's mum being either a pilot or mechanic who later became a pariah after her death, causing the family to be ostracised etc. and kep to no longer use his mother's surname. as a kid, kep would've wanted to become a mech pilot to help people, but after his mum's death (and dad's decline) i think his main motive would be to clear his mum's name/prove her innocence. kep met and befriended minnow the summer before his mum's death, but hasn't been in touch with minnow since.

as for plot: kep, a rookie pilot, is called to replace snake eyes' brother, who was incapacitated after an "accident" and is unable to man his mech. as he settles into his new role, several of the people around him– nobody, a scientist and mathematician, also the clone of a pilot who's death was covered up; cricket, meant to be a navigator but spends more time riling nobody up for fun than actually working; spades, ex-pilot, mechanic, gambler, kep's first friend; and kon, technically shouldn't be here but he likes to snoop for anything newsworthy– bring his attention to a possible conspiracy surrounding the pilots and those who order them which may have something to do with his mother's death. now, with his friends, he has to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, clear his mother's name, fight giant alien fish, and find out what's the deal with that one surly mechanic who never talks who seems vaguely familiar.

this was mostly just adapting the original plot of Skyfish to fit with the current characters/characterisations. and also adding Intrigue (the original plot wasn't really a plot lol). i love current Skyfish too much to change it, but i may steal stuff from this concept to use in the story proper :D!

3. noir

i feel the Skyfish world is just suited for noir– a big, bustling, anonymous city with a seedy underbelly and an upper class who refuses to acknowledge but still engages with what happens below. the skyfish are still there.

the gang probably wouldn't be thieves (except snake eyes. bro will pickpocket no matter what genre he's in), and they'd probably not even be the gang in this version of the story. the focus would be on cricket and nobody, private eyes (though nobody also tutors maths in her free time), with snake eyes as a thief who becomes their somewhat-unwilling assistant. it probably would have a case-of-the-week style plot, with an overarching mystery either about the Intrigue in the upper city or about the fact that nobody's a clone.

at risk of taking a silly ask too seriously, the problem is that Wei Wuxian in particular is the embodiment of "she's a bitch and I love her so much." I'd argue Jiang Cheng probably feels that way about Wen Qing and.... I'll be honest, I've got no idea what Yanli sees in Zixuan, but I don't think it's quite that, so she's probably the closest comparison we have to work with here.

What's great about wangxian and chengqing (and most other MXTX protags) is that they like the parts of one another that other people find off-putting or annoying. it's not about learning to tolerate one another, they're obsessed with each other from the start (even if it takes them a while to accept that-- looking at you, Wangji).

if JFM and YZY were to follow in the footsteps of their daughter, though, I guess it would be about seeing the spark of goodness that no one else really recognises. and let's be real... YZY is so much less of a MILF if she's secretly a devoted sweetie deep down.

Egg hatching story rough copy (small adharan ship invade California, gets raided by soldiers and loses like 20 something eggs) (Town that protag lives in is clled Blythe its on the cali-arizona border)(futuristic 1930’s setting where the gret depression happens 2004)“Look what i got at work hun!” Damn. Lucia groaned inwardly at her husbands voice as she straightened in her chair, her leg ached.. The dolt was always bringing home odd trinkets that while looking interesting or pleasing,were often dangerous. The loud tap-tap-tap of footsteps sounded at her door before being swung open. And a large milky colored orb was shoved into her view, Lucia fought the urge to glower at the exuberant man before her. “what  did you bring home this time Todd?”“A jewel or somethin’, i think thats what ‘boss said anyways” He bounced the sphere in his palms. she pinched the bridge of her nose and tilted her head back, causing long auburn wisps to fall away from her face.This ‘jewel’ was clearly an egg of some sort.It looked like it was laid by a barn owl, if a bit large and transparent-looking.“ Todd where did you get this ‘jewel’?” He handed her the egg as he spoke “ well me n the boss were patrolling and found ‘nother Adharan wreck just inside Cali borders.Had all these white jewels inside of it“  Lucia mm-hmm’d as she absentmindedly prodding at the egg, must be adharan then. “I picked this one cuz it was the biggest,” she couldnt hear him outside of the observational monologue in her head.Todd fidgeted during the pause, “ jus’ thought id get a pretty thing for my pretty lady”. Cold sweat beaded at Lucia’s brow, feeling very stupid she was tempted to come clean-The grub wiggled at Lucia in a manner that could only be described as laughing.damn bug.“well , uh, look I-” Her uncomfortable attempt at being honest was cut short as Todd’s face broke out into the single most excited smile on Terra,”He’s got your eyes!”“Wh- Uh yes ‘he’ sure does!” The thin lady quietly huffed a sigh of relief,“Why did you air quote “he”-” Todd began, Lucia quickly snatched up the larvae and wrapped it in a fluffy blanket.The bug spawn gurgled ungratefully.“Dont you have any manners? I just gave birth to a gru- child,i meant child” Todd quickly backed down sheepishly. “Ah uh go rest then ill take care of dinner” he was most certainly going to burn water, but it the thought that counts. After some time and once Lucia was certain her husband was clueless she allowed him to feed the squirming bug.”Soo.. Lucia glanced over her coffee mug at the two, mostly indisbelief, she had kept this ruse goin for 17 and a half years now. Sol was almost six feet tall now, half a foot taller than his ‘father’, large insectoid eyes protruded from his triangularly angled head, long antennae drooped downwards animatedly and he continued clicking. He had two sets of arms for the love of Moth Jesus. Lucia pondered her next lies.Sol trudged towards Blythe Highschool, anxiously jostling his backpack.He was just barely walking through a little forested shortcut when he heard the clicking and rustling from the bushes, {oh no, what if its an Adharan? Im too pretty to die!!} Sol panic clicked rapidly as the ruslting grew louder. Throwing up his arms in defense of his face, Sol awaited imminent demise.…Nothing happened, for two, maybe three seconds.{what.what are you doing in broad daylight?? Are you trying to get killed?} a new chittering noise interuppted Sol’s dramatic death scenario, a very irritated one at that. Sol lowered his arms just enough to peek at the newcomer, but, he couldnt see anything?? {Where are you? I cant see-} Sol gasped {Are you invisible? A ghost?!} A heavy and disgruntled sigh was heard before a chitinous black hand was waved in his face,causeing him to jump. {no im just short, cool it with the screeching beanstalk}

(Netflix prophecy anon) I will not be taking it back, because either the LO adaption will actually be good or a trainwreck, and either way, I will be entertained, sorry 💖 (I do understand why some people are squicked out by it, so I get it, but having grown up on gothic literature and movies like Labyrinth, it really doesn't bother me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The female protagonist in gothic literature is common, as it shows a usually powerless (in class and society) person not only gaining power but also the male protagonist being forced to step down like in Jane Eyre, basically flipping around who has power over who, a very powerful statement when gothic literature was first emerging (and since teenage and young adult girls get shat on so much today, I personally think it's still an important statement), as he's usually in a much higher class than she is at the start of the book or movie or whatever. I see LO following those same footsteps, since in the original myth, Persephone even takes on a new name when she becomes not only queen but a god more feared than Hades, but I still understand that it's not for everyone and hope you and others squicked out or triggered by the age difference are able to avoid it easily and that Tumblr's tag filters will work, since I think someone said they weren't working for some of their blocked tags. And also sorry this got long and rambly, my friends and I just talk excited alot about the comic and it's really late

From what I know and have heard there’s hardly any flip in power dynamic and isn’t hades some like power hungry dude who belittles everyone and is the worst depiction of a billionaire(and if you don’t pay thantanos you apparently have to do slave labor or indentured servitude for him???) who hardly monetarily supports Persephone?

Also isn’t the whole point of the movie Labyrinth that family is important and that you don’t know how good you’ve got it until you lose it and not the fact that the 16 year old had a crush on the villain or smth (which nothing even came out of that)

I have little hope that Persephone would remain as anything but a barley legal teen (in human years none the less!!) with a childlike mindset bar a few instances of bad assery

Can you talk more about your autistic Marnie headcanon? I also headcanon her as autistic and now i'm curious to know how your headcanons go

Sure thing. It kind of stemmed from an early sign of autism being that babies don’t smile like neurotypical babies.

Marnie not knowing how to smile naturally or “properly” at age 11 or older made me wonder if she never followed that social cue.

The only reason she feels like she should smile is so team yell/her fans can see she is appreciative of their support. Aka taking on a mask or something like it.

Marnie being a “shy kid” could’ve just been her not responding when prompted or disliking interaction altogether. And Piers being Piers, never forced it on her.

Plus, we don’t really see her express disappointment when losing to the protag, or panic when the darkest day happens.

I think during the game Marnie is still figuring out what she wants and how to express herself. I love that for her :)

Now for more headcanon stuff— Marnie isn’t effected by loud noises but repetitive noises can overstimulate her. A ticking clock, chewing, footsteps, barking, tapping.

Marnie doesn’t stim like Piers does, with his accessories and necklace. I think that thing she does with her fist could be a stim, clenching it and bringing it up to her face. Perhaps she’s a pressure stim person, like a stress ball or something.

Now when it comes to a hyper-fixation hers isn’t like Piers’ she likes music but it’s not necessarily her passion. I think we see Marnie actually pursuing her special interest during the game. Pokémon and battling them. She seems content to continue it even if she isn’t champion. Becoming the spikemuth gym-leader.

It started when Piers got her Morpeko. She probably gets hangry too, lol. She isn’t influenced by Piers lack of dynamax which could be Piers instilling individuality in her, or she just sees it as another means to win a battle. As it’s bare minimum, rather than with Piers personal values.

Marnie is analytical and still learning during Swsh. If there was ever a sequel to Galar, I’d like to see her more assure of herself. Alike Piers in battle strategy if not better. I headcanon older Marnie is very blunt and assertive, can come off mean but that’s not her intent.

Also, heads up I don’t headcanon Piers with autism. I think he has hyperactive ADD and in some senses similar to autism. But, he gets certain social cues, values and recognizes manners, and expresses himself more than Marnie does. Basically they’re Neurodivergent siblings. 🖤🖤

rant incoming (don't worry it's not me being mad, i'm just really hype about a book i'm rereading):

i'm genuinely shocked there's never been an uptick in interest in storm thief by chris wooding on this site. like of all places. it's a gothic dystopian YA novel with cyber and dieselpunk vibes with its main characters being a black disabled boy and a girl with chronic illness who live in the ghettos of a society that's built on greed and the bodies of people like them. there's a resistance and the fall of two civilisations. there's also a morally gray monster man. it's a book that's been living rent free in my mind since 2006. i'm currently rereading it as i do every so often and not only is it beautifully written and still holds up but the premise alone seems like the exact thing people would put on lists of diverse dystopian YA fiction or unique books for people who like dystopian fiction, steam/cyber/dieselpunk, gothic sci-fi, or eldritch horror. it has all of those aspects and i think a lot of people are missing out. it's also only one book and it's not too long meaning there's less commitment for people who don't want to read a whole series or start a series and never finish it (i hate doing that and yet i always do).

it's on my list of books i always wished there was an active fandom for because it's honestly one of the coolest fucking book i ever read growing up and much of the imagery it paints and it's story still inspire me to this day. it's at the top of my list of books i'd adapt if i had the chance and something i think people should give a shot. please read storm thief if you get a chance.

also kinda spoiler alert but also everything i'm saying next is either obvious early on (in a good story telling way, not lazy writing way) or straight up on the back of the book;

if y'all do read this book and i end up getting any messages from people whining about the cishetness of the characters i will scream because interracial friendship and love is just as revolutionary as trans and gay friendship and love. like the last time i suggested it to a group of people they complained about it "being basic YA" and "making the straight boy and girl fall in love" and to this day i'm still tight about that shit. like first of all it's obvious from the second they're introduced that they have little crushes on each other and their chemistry is really sweet and natural. it's a good m/f couple and one of the few genuinely sweet and healthy ones i read in YA fiction as a kid (ig you can argue codependency but they're just trying to keep the other one alive). second of all (and more importantly) until this book i had NEVER read a book with a black kid with dreadlocks from the ghetto being the hero of a sci-fi novel let alone being the dude on the cover AND getting the girl even though she's white. like ????? that was a Life Changing Experience for me and if you can't see why i really cannot trust you.

until i was 11 i only read about characters like me and the kids i grew up with in the hood in realistic fiction about being poor and black and sad all the time. this was the first teen novel i remember picking up about a black boy that didn't involve drive by shootings and the kind of racism i already saw and experienced every day. he was out there running from monsters and dodging eldritch storms while uncovering the ancient secrets of a chaos ridden society all while needing a respirator to breathe and wearing a dope gasmask fit. his name isn't some stereotypical "black" name, it's rail which is weird but i always thought that was cool as fuck. he's a character that if he wasn't described as "dark skinned and dreadlocked" in his intro, people would just up and assume he's white because you know why. his blackness is not his character, it's just a trait and he's treated like any other teenage orphan thief archetype only he's way fucking cooler because he has a gas mask and a dope ass artifact.

i will not tolerate any rail or rail/moa slander. he's a bad ass mother fucker and she's an equally bad ass secondary protag who's parents were rebels against the unjust political and economic powers at be and follow in their footsteps. she's also a very active participant in the story even though she could easily have been nothing more than a helpless damsel due to her waifish and sickly presence.

their friends to more arc is a part of the story's progression and their character growth, it is not the main plot point and i'm only spoiling that explicitly because if y'all really don't want to read a story with a m/f couple you can avoid this. but i will say that if you are among the shockingly common many who will straight up tune out when a guy and girl fall in love i really do think you have issues. like i get when it's forced in a really obnoxious way but a lot of y'all will read absolute garbage just because it's gay rep and then sleep on shit like this or other really cool books like hold me closer necromancer (completely different topic but i will rant about that next cause it's my next reread). it's sad to me y'all actively choose to miss out on cool shit because you apparently hate straight people so much that it will completely ruin something that's unique in every other way.

and again, highkey sick of people writing off m/f interracial couples as if the idea of black men being with white women isn't still demonized irl and rare in the media. this book was for kids, written in the mid 00s, and it managed to do what most mainstream media still rarely ever does.

Goodbye to Halos - How Fenic (The Main Protagonist) is Fenic (The Lost Princess)

Ok y’all buckle up because it’s about to be a wild ride.

FIRST OFF: READ GOODBYE TO HALOS. It has incredibly good writing and art and characterization!!! Fenic, the main protag, is a trans lesbian!! The other protags include (but are not limited to) a genderqueer gay lion and a poly wlw! I’ll post a link in the notes so this post shows up in tags, but a search of ��Goodbye to Halos” will get you there in the first link!

Ok so I don’t know how to format this so let’s just start from the first hint and go from there.

And one more important note: Current Fenic will be referred to as just Fenic, and her mom will be referred to as The Lost Princess.

HINT ONE: THE MAAVE

So maave’s are, as a refresher, the mark under a Shade’s eye. They are a unifying trait of the shades (Along with horns and magic, but less so as they aren’t retained in children of Shades and Wildren, but I digress). But there are also "no two alike in form and color”, as Enae put it.

Which is WEIRD because 

Yeah. Impossible. UNLESS... THE LOST PRINCESS AND FENIC ARE THE SAME PERSON! And not in an amnesia kinda way, but in a restarting life kinda way. But we’ll get to that. 

Addendum: 

The wording of “you are very, very closely related to The Lost Princess” is weird when Enae already knows that Fenic is the lost princess’s daughter. Also the rest of this page speaks for itself I think. “Lost princess was immortal”, “There’s no other Fenics” (especially Fenics with that maave and other traits like red hair). This establishes that Fenic and the Lost Princess look similar, if not alike/identical. This will be essential in hint three.

HINT TWO: GOD’S BLESSING

So as the fight continues, God Herself literally steps in. Well, an avatar of Her’s, later named a Godeye.

God intercepted the knife from hitting Fenic. I won’t post the entire scene here, but basically God shoots the knife at Enae, wounding her BAD. But as God goes to send another attack, Fenic comes in and stands between the two. And then She freaks out????

Now maybe God isn’t a god, but God is just Her name? Also interesting is how She is the only one to use lower case, and only when She says “I”. But that’s another post, as I digress...

God Herself is asking forgiveness from Fenic? After Fenic asked (with her actions” for God not to attack Enae? Enae later talks about this in the following chapter:

“And that girl... blessed by God, she’s the only other one who can sway Her heart. Fenic...”

And who else was blessed by God? The Lost Princess. Before this, Fenic has had no reason to be blessed by god besides being related to the (immortal, may i remind you) lost princess who "died” before Fenic can remember. 

(Also another digression... the only other one? Who is the one Fenic is the “other one” off of? Maybe The Dead Princess? Maybe the old empress? Both are dead, but it’s phrased that she’s one of two, and coming off this theory, perhaps she and The Dead Princess pair up to be the two that can sway God’s heart.)

HINT THREE: ASHER AND TAHMONAI

So their meeting has a ton of different sentences that lead towards this theory, so I’m just going to group them all here. (Note: Enae is narrating and Asher and Tahmonai are talking about The Lost Princess. Tahmonai morphed to The Lost Princess to ask if Asher has seen her.)

“The person you’re looking for... she doesn’t exist anymore” and “That, too was-- somehow -- not true” and “[The Lost Princess] is really immortal too”... these statements don’t have a lot of intersections in the venn diagram of where they can all be true. The only fact that I can think of that does make them true is that Fenic is the rebirth of The Lost Princess. Continuing onto the next page...

There’s a lot to break down here:

“She... was a dear friend of mine.” Meaning The Lost Princess was a friend, not a romantic interest with whom he would have a child with.

“Someone I was lucky enough to know all my life, even if she only knew me for a fraction of her’s.” Implying that The Lost Princess was MUCH older than Asher. Immortality, anyone?

“But there are... circumstances now. Nothing will come of this, Tahmonai.” If this theory is true, then those circumstances are that The Lost Princess doesn’t have her memories, she restarted her life. She isn’t the same person. It clicks.

“Stay in my office. I’ll make arrangements.” Implying he is going to see The Lost Princess to arrange a sort of meeting. But instead he goes to Fenic to send her through the portal. Funny writing there, don’t you think?

After Asher sends Fenic through the portal...

“Did I do the right thing, old friend...?” The name “old friend” is being used here to denote he’s talking about The Lost Princess. Perhaps where she/her reborn self just went through the portal?

“I have to believe this is what you wanted.” (The word “wanted” can be seen if you zoom in close, at least at full resolution). Keyword: “this”. Not “that”. “This” means something that is near, something that was just there. Why would he use “this” for something from someone who is dead? No, what if she, or a version of herself, was just there? And what exactly she, The Lost Princess, wanted? We’ll get to that in hint five.

TO THE NEXT PAGE!

PROBABLY THE HEAVIEST PAGE OF THEM ALL

“I already told you the person you’re looking for doesn’t exist anymore.” Not died, “doesn’t exist anymore.” Specific choice of words!

“Not in a way that’s useful to you.” As in she no longer has her memories, perhaps? That she’s currently a 15 year old? 

“And before she left, she told me...” Before she LEFT. Not died! LEFT!

“That she didn’t want her past to haunt her anymore.” THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT IN HINT FIVE.

“She started over.” BAM. PROBABLY THE CORNERSTONE OF THIS THEORY. Combine these three words with the rest of the theory, and you get the conclusion that “starting over” means something along the lines of reincarnation. But I’ll get to the reincarnation bit later. 

SO THATS ALL UP TO WHERE THE COMIC IS RIGHT NOW! BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE REREAD?

HINT FOUR: FENIC AS A NAME

Now this one is a little shorter but in the prologue we see Fenic name herself for the first time.

After being called a lady, she sorta panics as, like, what’s she gonna do, give her a boy’s name when she’s a girl and just been called that? And her first instinct is to go with her mother’s name. Like, sure, maybe it’s because she think’s “girl’s name go” and the girl/woman/female closest to her is her mom. But I like to think it’s an instinct to keep the same name. It could be read either way, but I feel like it was worth mentioning. 

ALONG WITH A BONUS THEORY. The Lost Princess is trans. I’ve been thinking about how The Lost Princess would restart, and seeing how the maave is the same, the body is likely the same as well, implying a restart like that of a phoenix. Sorta. Meaning that the AGAB is the same. Maybe Asher didn’t know if restarting life would retain trans-ness or w/e OR he didn’t know The Lost Princess was trans. Either way he went with AGAB, clearly. I like to think that The Lost Princess spent a lot of time thinking about her name so it’s really ingrained in her so that it’s an instinct to be called Fenic :]

HINT FIVE: WHY?

So. That mystery chapter huh? Here’s a proposal- who we see is The Lost Princess.

Think about it, the person we see doesn’t have horns or some sort of tail or animal ears, eliminating someone who is purely Shade or Wildren. This leaves Fenic, The Dead Princess, or The Lost Princess, all born of both species. The hair doesn’t match The Dead Princess’s hair, so that eliminates her. 

This leaves the Fenics, whose hair DO match, assuming The Lost Princess and Fenic have the same hair texture, which in the frame of what has been discussed, it does. 

NOW THIS PAGE

Feels like a reason to be reborn to me.

Granted, this chapter, LITERALLY TITLED “premonition” and the names at the beginning could EASILY be shortened for Clairissa and Enae, who would’ve been only babies or unborn when The Lost Princess was around. This is VERY likely in the future, with Fenic. But I only realized this after I started referring to it earlier in the post, so no going back. 

But maybe it’s salvageable. Maybe Fenic is having the same thoughts as The Lost Princess. The Lost Princess, as stated in hint three, didn’t want the past to haunt her anymore. So she chose to forget in a new life, reborn. 

Maybe Fenic is thinking about following in her mother’s footsteps.

This premonition chapter, along with the whole other conspiracy board of “What’s up with Salin (The Dead Princess) and Tahmonai?”, have me very concerned for the future.

As I was collecting pages to put in here, I noticed that this is quite a common theory if the comment section of the pages is anything to go by. I thought so too before all this, so I didn’t really want to put the effort into a post, but Virgo encouraged me to make it anyway sooooo 

Either way, this can still work as a collection of evidence, and an archive on our, or at least my, thoughts on “What’s up with the Fenics” question! Hopefully later down the line we can look at this and be like, “called it!” or, “honey, you’ve got a big storm coming.”

might i add! sophie has a 4k t.v. (don't ask how) and whenever her boys are sick, she finds new netflix shows to binge. keefe and fitz l o v e it. some of their favorites are stranger things, i am not okay with this, and love is blind. don't ask me why those shows. i don't know.

yes!! this is important!!

sophie would love being able to keep up with an aspect of human culture and everyday life – and fitz and keefe would love getting involved, too! human media and entertainment is drastly different from any elvin productions they’ve seen – by far. humans are a lot more… dark? and violent? but…. it’s intriguing. fitz isn’t keen on r-rated movies, though, because the violence gets Very graphic. keefe can only stomach a few. sophie’s kinda just Used to it

i feel like fitz would be into (some) documentaries and movies based on true events. he’s a knowledge sponge, guys! an adorable little nerd! he loves to learn about prominent figures in human culture and pieces of their history. it intrigues him. (and sometimes terrifies him. seriously, how are humans so violent?)

still, even if it gives him a bit of a stomach-ache sometimes, he always appreciates the effort put into the film.

mystery/thrillers are also hella rad!! fitz loves picking out one and playing a game with sophie and keefe. they want to see who can guess the plot twist or killer first – and whoever can wins a favor (sound familiar ;) )

while fitz is into more psychological thrillers, keefe likes anything and everything generically dubbed ‘freaky’. (he thinks pennywise is pretty cool. he draws him once and sophie is both amazed and off-put by how realistic it looks)

sophie’s pretty into the horror category herself, so her and keefe can empathize on the interest. fitz is downright confused as to how they could enjoy something like that. (if it’s movie time and keefe or sophie picks one of those, fitz claims the Middle Cuddle Spot so that he’s cushioned between the two of them and can easily hide under the covers or their arms.)

keefe also likes comedy, action, chick-flicks, drama, (some) musicals… you know, this boy can basically roll with anything. does he have his favourites? yes. but can he settle down and watch something with sophie and fitz that he wouldn’t normally choose? also yes

let’s state the obvious – keefe and fitz are both into disney. especially disney princess movies. 

and i’m serious about that!!! not as a joke, like, “oh, haha, they like the princess movies?”

keefe’s favourite is probably Tangled. 

flynn rider is suave and has keefe’s charm/humor! maximus is tough and snarky when you meet, but he can soften up, and keefe relates to that! pascal knows how to put up a fight! and rapunzel herself is brave and adventurous and there for the people she cares about; and that’s all keefe has ever wanted to do. (also wielding a frying pan as a weapon is badass)

also, as much as it might hurt to say it, keefe relates to rapunzel, the abuse she suffered, and the trap she was in. the strong storyline and accurate depiction hits home.

fitz’s is probably Frozen. he loves the sisterly action they have going there, okay?? like how badass is anna? how badass is elsa? how badass are these women together?

sophie’s is Mulan. she’s such a strong and powerful role model to look up to! and the humor is PEAK.Mulan is also from sophie’s childhood, so that makes it even more special. the fact that she gets to share it with keefe and fitz…. magical.

also sophie lowkey wants to follow in mulan’s footsteps and slice her hair into a bi bob with a sword. see this post of mine ; )

sci-fi gets all of them. they like the adventure and the morals in the stories, the warnings for the future. they like the undiscovered planets, the tricky tech, and the general imagination that went into producing it. 

think The Matrix, Star Wars, Alien, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar, Tau (Netflix), Wall-E, I Am Mother (Netflix), Ready Player One…

they all have some shared favourite movies and shows, though, where their tastes align.

 think Stranger Things (Netflix) (they find it seriously freaky and amusing how similar it is to them/their situation), Once Upon a Time (these are the fairytales sophie grew up learning about?), Dark (Netflix) (does it get much better than time travel??), She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix) (again!! badass women galore!! it’s awesome!!), the OA (Netflix) (it’s shrouded with mystery), the Rain (Netflix) (this one is a big adventure!!), the Umbrella Academy (Netflix) (i mean, c’mon, they have to save the world from the apocalypse, isn’t that pretty rad in and of itself?), A Quiet Place (this one… fucking brilliant. they’re all dead silent as they watch it and it’s such a powerful movie that they feel weird making sound when it finishes… they watch it again and again and again.), Onward (it’s adorable as FUCK and keefe may cry a little everytime they watch it)…

so, yeah! keefe and fitz really appreciate human media (and it especially comes in handy when they’re sick)

but let’s all admit it…. sometimes human productions are extremely Stupid and low-budget/general low-quality. 

so, there’s always fun in picking out a movie or show to laugh/cringe at because it’s just that bad.

2.) Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

- Only Joseph Seed at the very start. I wanted my protag to be a foil to him, so a lot of her backstory i wrote to make her someone who could understand Joseph’s pain and anger, but still have not strayed so far off the path as he had, making her resist him and be his opponent in the conflict

4.) In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

- Rook being a member of the sheriff’s department and the setting of Montana were probably two of the biggest factors from the game (aside from Joseph) that i used to write her backstory. Her dad was a sheriff elsewhere and that would be her motivation for wanting to follow in his footsteps down that career path. And being born and raised in Montana, she’d be a newcomer in the game’s setting but would fit in easily, having spent the majority of her life in a similar environment and would have the skills necessary to thrive in such a setting. 

6.) Is there any significance behind their eye color?

- Honestly, i have wanted to give a character heterochromia for such a long time, but was only stopped by nerves since i’d seen it branded as “cringe” or “Mary Sue” or any other kind of insult people muster for traits that aren’t normally seen. But i just pushed forward cause it’s cool as hell and i wanted to use that so i committed to it! it’s cool and looks awesome, what can i say

8.) What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

- The lengths she’s willing to go for people, i suppose. and a degree of her melancholy (but only a little bit of it, cause i put that poor girl through the wringer)

10.) If they have an LI, how much of their character is tailored to be compatible to that person?

- I’ll be honest and say that my first playthrough when i was developing Anna, i had no intention of pairing her with John Seed in the slightest and didn’t base anything of her creation around him, hahaha. It just so happened that by making her backstory in such a way to have her be Joseph’s foil, i made her an almost parallel to John and in my second playthrough i realized how much they actually have in common - and how Anna might have become like John if she’d given into her anger and sorrow just a little bit sooner in life.

12.) What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

- Right now, just about anything, lmao - i’ve hit such a dry spot with art and writing. But mostly with writing, i found that things i had planned originally started going in ways i didn’t anticipate, making it hard to keep up with at times. The skeleton of the story remained the same, but getting from point A to Z became very winding at points. As for edits, her FC doesn’t have eye or hair color even remotely close to her own, so it’s a process trying to get a photo to look anything like her, hahaha

14.) If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

- Her anger/wrath and her willingness to help others and the lengths to go to for that: I think those two traits best help explain her actions. Her irrationality, her selflessness or selfishness, her sacrifices...all can be traced back to those two things, and how much she desires love and approval but how that can be overshadowed at times by the hurt and rage she’s had to contend with alone for years

16.) What is something about your OC  can make you cry?

- I gave Anna a tragic backstory so thinking on that can do it, lol. I guess the “canon” fate of Rook as shown in New Dawn would be enough to do it too, since i can’t bear having her go through that on top of everything else i made her go through

18.) What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

-  I suppose that as righteous i try to write her at times, she could submit to darkness easily with the right push. Maybe that shouldn’t surprise me so much, since it’s in her canon that she did something bad in the past, but i guess i didn’t realize just how easy stepping over that line fully would be for her

i was thinking about Ideal Pokemon Protaganists if i were to adapt the games into an anime, because i’ve been... lets say BUMMED that none of the pokemon generations episodes have shown a female protag unless it’s in conjunction with a male protag, whereas they have shown plenty of male protags by themselves.

and my first instinct is All Girls Only because that’s the sort of person that i am (well why not JUST girls then FUCKERS) but that’s not really fair either. so my ideal progression of protagonists if i did an anime would be

1. red for kanto. i love leaf’s design, but in my experience with just the games and the pokemon origins anime... red has more of an established personality and an existence in the games. if you have red, then you can have your choice of johto protag battle him on top of mt. silver. also. he can make out with blue oak, which i will admit appeals to me. plus, since i want female protags for a pretty long stretch in the next few regions i’m willing to give on this one. 

he has a charmander since red does in pokemon generations i liked that 

2. i’m going with gold for johto. since they switched up the designs between crystal and soul silver, neither of the female johto protags have the Icon TM status that gold can achieve. 

he has a totodile

3. MAY FOR HOENN. there is no question in my mind that may should be the hoenn protag because 1. her design is way better 2. she’s already an icon from the established anime and 3. it is TIME for a girl. the reign of the female protags has come 

she has a torchic, just like in the anime

4. dawn for sinnoh! you think that soggy bread design boy could carry this game? i think not. dawn is ready to kick ass and gaze up at cynthia with awe in her little gay eyes. 

she has a turtwig in this because i haven’t had a grass starter yet. 

5. okay so we have to have 2 unova protags, and while i think that there are some cool things that they could do with parallels if they were the same gender (i have a lot of cool headcanons with hilda and rosa) my preference would be hilda for bw. this is because i 1. prefer the design 2. prefer ferriswheelshipping to issushipping #sorrynotsorry and also... i just think that hilda’s a less atrocious name. PLUS i think that there’s not enough of a female character who effected the Plot TM in the biggest possible way and makes enormous shoes that a younger, male character has to fill (steven universe is like the only example i can think of)

7. which leads to bw2 which gives us nate! i think that nate kind of following in hilda’s footsteps, seeing all these major effects that she and her friends had on the region would be really cool. plusikindashiphimwithhughmorethaniwouldrosaso

8. i don’t know anything about xy but the female protag’s design is cute. i would go with her right now with no further context

9. i don’t know anything about sun and moon but i actually prefer the boy’s design. i’m going with him
