It was great to see and hear many of our families from the Corona Youth Music Project , and that everyone is doing fine. It’s been hard not to be able to connect knowing that our kids and their families are right at the epicenter of the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S. Adapting to new technology to continue with their remote education, on top of everything else, has made it extra-stressing for many of them. Thanks to WQXR, NYC’s classic station for their generous donation of 14 tiny violins that will gear our Cultural After-School Adventures (CASA) program at PS110Q this spring!  

WQXR’s instrument drive has bee instrumental in Núcleo Corona’s growth in the past years.  Thanks for all their efforts to improve the situation of music education in public schools and community programs through out the city!!

We are excited to announce that 4 of our students have been accepted in some of New York finest arts high schools: One in La Guardia High School for the Arts in Manhattan, and three at Frank Sinatra High School for the Arts in Queens.  In school year 2018, out of 15 students in high school age at the Corona Youth Music Project, 9 will be attending an arts high school!

The University of Delaware’s Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (Xi Mu Chapter) paid Núcleo Corona a visit, for a Winds Ensemble workshop at the Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center, on January 14th 2017.  On its 5th year, the 13 students from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia have shared their talent and passion for music with our students in an intensive workshop that has helped our students warm up for the new year.  Thanks for all your energy, talent and dedication!

The Corona Youth Music Project is teaming with the Dream Unfinished Project, along with other El Sistema-inspired programs in NYC, in a project called Raise Your Hand.  Its goal is to use an orchestra to make some noise against the school-to-prison-pipeline. The school-to-prison-pipeline is the increasingly widespread trend of pushing children of color out of schools and into the penal and criminal justice systems. Raise Your Hand will feature a side-by-side orchestra of student musicians performing alongside professional musicians; include guest speakers discussing topics within educational justice; and feature an immersive exhibit on the school-to-prison pipeline curated by the Museum of Impact.

Congratulations to our students Jadira Asitimbay (Trumpet) and Itayetzi Uranga (Horn) for being accepted in the Take a Stand Festival, sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, this summer.  Jadira and Itzy will be part of the first national “El Sistema” orchestra that will debut in Los Angeles at Disney Hall, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel on July 22nd.

Our Cultural After-School Adventures (CASA) students at PS110Q have been working hard on their paper violins, violas, cellos and basses! They are getting so ready for their new real string instruments! (Coming up this spring!).  Thanks to our teaching artists Laura Hutton and Erin Ellis, and their classroom music teacher Ms. Ana White for taking them this far!

During the mid-winter break, our team of youth mentors got to work intensively with the “No Frontiers” Children’s Orchestra for 4 days of workshops and rehearsals. Thanks all for your work and enthusiasm!
