🧛‍♀️ WLW Wed: Vampires (Part 1) 🧛‍♀️
A jointly compiled HP femslash rec list made by the lovely members of the HP SAFFICS discord server. See all previous rec lists in the WLW Library on Tumblr or AO3!
Currently: Vampires (see part 2) Previously: Ginmione (see list)
🩸 LONG (>10k) 🩸
There's no blood like yours by isuckatnicknames [Hermione/Bellatrix, E, 102k]
Bellatrix is a pretty ancient vampire and Hermione is her 'meant-to-be'. There's no stronger bond that that.
A fate better than death by sugarsnappeas [Bellatrix/Rita, M, 17.9k]
Bellatrix was a vampire... Bellatrix was a possibility... Bellatrix was intoxicating, captivating, and Rita had been enraptured by her since the first moment she had seen her.
Sharp Bites, Soft Kisses by vendettadays [Hermione/Pansy, E, 10.7k]
Hermione thought her life had quietened now that the world was calmer. She had a good, stable job at the Ministry. She had her pub nights with Harry and Ron. All in all, things were going well for her. That was until she died and was turned into a vampire.
🩸 MEDIUM (3-10k) 🩸
hot blooded (now you're driving me wild) by @grimjobs [Pandora/Lily, Pandora/Mary/Lily, E, 8.3k]
Still, Lily grinned wide; teeth fully on display, and she heard Pandora’s breath hitch as her thumb moved from her cheek to stroke along one of the fangs now protruding through her gums.
When the thrill is gone by @sleepingontheway [Fleur/Hermione, NR, 6.0k]
Years post-war, Hermione is a shell of the girl she once was. This is not a happy tale.
Sweetness and Light by Headcanonsandmore [Luna/Ginny, T, 5.8k]
Ginevra Weasley (the daughter of a large working class Devon family) helps rescue a Miss Luna Lovegood from drowning in a river. However, the enigmatic Miss Lovegood is far more than meets the eye.
i would kill for some company (temporarily) by invisiblemuseum [Pandora/Lily, M, 4.7k]
pandora's never seen something so pretty and not wondered just how long it would take for it to die, and just how good it would taste.
Of Shadow and Blood by Wolf_of_Lilacs [fem!Harry/fem!Tom, NR, 4.2k]
Even serial killers should exercise caution when picking up hitchhikers. Who knew? (Certainly not Tommie Riddle, with a pathological fear of death and a taste for the macabre.)
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night by RachelC978 [Fleur/Hermione, T, 3.3k]
Don’t you just hate it when your meal gets interrupted? When it’s by a beautiful woman whose blood sings to you, it’s slightly more forgivable.
🩸 SHORT (2k-3k) 🩸
The Catacombs by GhostxWriter [Surprise pairing, E, 2.9k]
Deep within the bowels of society, a girl dances in a club. Here, in the depths of the catacombs, she finds what she’s looking for in the eyes of an almost-stranger.
An Eternity with You by @sosh022 [Fleur/Hermione, M, 2.6k]
Fleur dies and Hermione defies the laws of life and death to bring her back. Because sometimes, one lifetime is not enough.
Like A Secret In Your Throat (Can You Stake My Heart?) by arakhnee [Marlene/Dorcas, M, 2.5k]
Dorcas is a vampire. A monster, if you will, and Marlene's target - except that they keep evading her. When Marlene is sent on her sixth mission to kill them, she makes a vow not to fail this time.
Hey, Baby, I'm Not Scared (I'm Just Dying Inside) by orphan_account [Fleur/fem!Harry, E, 2.5k]
Fleur Delacour vanishes without a trace at the end of the war, presumed dead by those around her. Harry takes the wrong turn in an alley in Paris and learns that the truth is far more complicated (and far more horrifying).
The Third Option by @fiestylilmetalbendingqueen [Astoria/Pansy, T, 2.4k]
Each day Astoria's blood curse gets worse, and after exhausting all other options, there's one more to consider.

“It’s not like I married him on purpose, you know?”
"You can't just come back into my life whenever you feel like it. It doesn't work that way."
"We shouldn't have done this... it was a mistake."
“If I told you, you’d hate me forever.”
“Yeah, okay, so the car is totally crashed. But what are we gonna do about the goat?”
"Please, just look at me."
“I know you don’t have any reason to trust me, but… you need to know something.”
"Oh, good, you’re here! Hold this."
"I said it first. It’s mine."
“Put the gun down, dearest. I have news!”
"What are you reading?"
"Would you still love me if I was a worm?"
"Congratulations! You’ll get to meet my highly dysfunctional family for Christmas."
"It’s scary to bring a child into this horrible, horrible world."
“I love you! No time to explain – gotta go.”
“Oh man, I’ve had the worst day ever.”
"Tell me it's not true. Please." "I did warn you not to trust me."
"You looked like you needed a hug."
"I really thought I could trust you, that you would be better than all of them... turns out you're even worse."
"Is there a particular reason why you are... naked?"
"The silent treatment? Really?"
“Forgive me if I’m misreading things, but do you want to make out?”
"I don't like this."
"I know how it looks, but it's not what you think!"
"I dare you!"
"You have something in your hair, umm... Do you want me to get it out?"
"Put some clothes on for the love of God." "Is that my shirt?"
"Why is Santa looking at us like that?"
"I can go anywhere I want... just not home."
"I swear if you go out of that door right now, you better never come back."
"Go ahead and leave then, just like everybody else did."
"Please come home."
"I think I'm in love with you and it's terrifying."
"Were you watching porn?"
"What would you say if I brought back home a duck?" "Y/N... what have you done?" "Meet Buffy... the Quacker Slayer."
"Put a baby in me."
"Why is it so hard to let you go?"
"Have we met before?"
"Do you have a picture of me as your lockscreen?"
"Let's run away."

HIS REACTION TO HER FACE
roberts terrified of you!!
i just want to see joel smile
ayee marlene
I love that her outfit is exactly the same as the end of the game
Okay interesting so Marlene does have her locked in there for her bite. It’s interesting this woman calls her a “random girl”,, ig people don’t know Marlene knew Anna and was supposed to “take care of Ellie”, but Marlene being lead firefly ig she isn’t really doing a lot of parenting or making it obvious she knows Ellie
Ooh they’re leaving the QZ and were gonna take her themselves.
Radio tower guy is Tommy isn’t he
OH OHW AIT WAIT. I’m so dumb. joel said he hadn’t heard from Tommy in three weeks and it’s been three weeks since Ellie’s been bit SO Marlene contacted Tommy (probably didn’t tell him abt the bite) but tommys had to keep some silence/distance from joel for firefly sake?? I don’t know??
YOU TELL ME TO LOOK FOR THE LIGHT AND ILL BREAK YOUR JAW 😭 he said okay nevermind I’ll leave u be
Pedro even looks like he walks like Joel
how long has she been tied up for
AYE HER BAG
THE SHIVVVV
is it gonna happen :(
aw first time her names been said
kind of sick how she calls it home ngl.
Joel’s bag why am I so happy to see it
THE WET HAIR
Construction corner with Joel miller 😭
oh roberts dead. ynow I was kind of looking forward to Joel breaking his arm, but I like this take
I LAUGHED the way he threw Ellie into the wall 😭
he said no shiv for you
him pointing a gun at her is kind of funny to me knowing how they end up
“Not at her. Point it at me” no this feels like a future Joel line. or maybe it’s my brainrot.
you turn my own brother against me :(
IM NOT GOING WITH THEM SKDHDKDB
“To you? She’s cargo.” “We don’t smuggle people, sorry”
“what are they capable of?” oh you’ll find out
wait wait I want a north tunnel scene
ASSHOLE 😭😭
please remember that I’m bleeding out 💀
the shoulder shove 😭
mmm I feel the ep ends on them finding out she’s infected
OOOH bill and frank. Wait how did she figure that out
He’s so sick of her 😭
okay to this scene is very different from the game one but in a good way I think. They’re much more on each other’s nerves in this than in the game, it seems. That back and forth “what’re you doing?” “Killing time” is done very slowly in the game, and Ellie’s more confused than anything. But here, Ellie’s more agitated with him and raises her voice. And Joel responds really quick to her, as opposed to the game. I don’t know where I was going with this I’m very tired
“You mumble in your sleep” :(
“So we’re gonna be okay.” “Yeah” 🕳👩‍🦯
YOU SOME KIND OF BIG WIGS DAUGHTER? her little smile
He was about to give her a tongue lashing 😭
“You stay close and you follow my lead” “yeah yeah of course” and Joel’s reaction 😭 sorry babygirl be nicer to her
joel has “im too old for this” written all over his face
him stepping in front of her :’) flashbacks for him for sure YUPPPP HES SEEING IT NAUR
no it’s not even Sarah but it is at the same time he has to kill this guy. he’s getting revenge for Sarah
damn the finding out she’s infected was very short lived
Aaaand credits

ANNA WILLIAMS HEADCANONS & PLOT POINTS
below the cut are my personal headcanons for anna williams & some potential plot points which explain her survival beyond show/game canon for plot purposes
anna was put in foster care when she was young, her mother had mental health struggles and this impacted anna a lot in her formative years, sometimes her mom would get custody again but for the most part she stayed with her foster family.
she and marlene met when they were young (aprox primary school age), they were neighbours and grew up together. though they were always polar opposites to each other and butted heads a lot, they had a strong friendship.
as a teen, anna was rebellious and obnoxious, she didn't have a lot of 'direction' in her life, nor a lot of healthy outlets for her energy. she was a bit of a klepto and loved to shoplift so she had a criminal record growing up.
getting older, she grew out of her rebellious tendencies and she knew she wanted to help people somehow. though she was never great at school and definitely didn't feel smart enough to be in nursing school, she did it anyway. she studied and worked twice as hard as everyone else to be the best damn nurse she could.
during the outbreak, fedra moved her to the closest qz: boston. she'd only been a practicing nurse for two years at this stage but she was forced by fedra to work as a nurse for the qz after so many other medical professionals had died during the initial outbreak.
anna wasn't ever a part of the fireflies, though marlene was always trying to recruit her, especially given she was a nurse. she never resonated with the mission of the fireflies, but she hated life in the qz under the rule of fedra. she spent a lot of time with the fireflies, just not being a part of their actual group and participating in their plans.
anna and tommy met years ago when he was a part of the fireflies.
anna fell pregnant in 2008 when she was thirty-four, marlene was the first person she told
ellie was born only two weeks premature (which is why anna had to rush to the safe house when no one was there yet), she spend most of her pregnancy being extra cranky and craving mustard hotdogs (though she wasn't ever able to have any).
SURVIVAL & GIVING ELLIE UP PLOTPOINTS
1) immunity is hereditary and the bite she received from that infected when she gave birth did not infect her. marlene couldn't kill her even though she begged for it as she thought she was doing to die and she didn't want to kill herself. -- she still told marlene to take ellie and give her a better life. marlene never killed anna, she took ellie but when anna never got worse she still figured her baby would be better off without her. she never contacted marlene again though as she had no idea how she would react to finding out she was immune. anna also never fully trusted she wouldn't one day become infected.
2) she was never bitten during that altercation with the infected during ellie's birth (and is not immune & ellie's immunity will need to be explained another way). she gave ellie to marlene in a desperate plea to give her a better life as she felt she wouldn't be able to raise her alone in the qz. she left and regrets that choice but still thinks it was the right thing for her safety.
3) anna was chosen by fedra doctors, once they found out she was pregnant, for tests and trials to try and create not a vaccine for the cordyceps, but rather immunity. anna never agreed to these trials and she was forced into it by fedra. they exposed her and the baby to the cordyceps virus and one of the many "vaccines" they had tried in the past. nothing ever seemed to make any impact on her, besides causing her immense distress she never seemed to respond negatively or positively to anything they did to her. once fedra released her late in her pregnancy she fled for marlene's safehouse outside of boston qz.

Season 3 Character Highlights
Character: Grace Ryder
Favorite 3 scenes:
3x04 “Push”: I will forever enjoy Grace giving Billy a piece of her mind, and really who says stupid things to someone in labor. The weasel comparisons were hilarious.
3x05 “Child Care”: The kitchen scene after finding out about Wyatt. This scene was raw, it was full of valid emotion, there wasn’t anyone to blame, but so much hurt. The scene at the end of the episode with Judd and then with Marlene were also great, the acceptance and respect was clear.
3x11 “Prince Albert in a Can”: The vulnerability that she showed both to Judd and to Carlos felt so authentic. I loved how she decided that she and Carlos were going to figure out who made the swatting call and helped them both get their power back.
Favorite 3 lines: funny, heartfelt, or ridiculous
3x03 “Shock and Thaw”: “Billy, I read that there are two reasons that we do anything. There's a good reason, and then there's the real one. So, how about you just admit it. When you saw a chance to shutter that place permanently, you couldn't resist. You couldn't stand to see that house thrive under Captain Strand. Billy, I don't even want to think about what your 126 brothers would say if they could see you right now. I hope you think about it, though, and I hope it keeps you up at night the way losing the 126 kept my husband up at night, Billy! He thinks I don't know, but I do, and dammit, Billy, I promised him that I would stay relaxed, and I'm not feeling so relaxed right now, so how about you get your sandwich, and you get out.”
3x04 “Push”: “Billy, if you are on your way to an, "I told you so," I will rip your weasel tongue out, stick it to that windshield just to watch it freeze.”

Favorite 3 dynamics:
Judd, Charlie, & Wyatt: Grace doesn’t love anyone only half way, she loves them with her whole heart. She let her self be vulnerable, and the way she immediately included Wyatt as part of the family was a very selfless action.
Tommy: Tommy is Grace’s voice of reason when she gets too stuck in her faith. Grace has a strong relationship with religion, dating back to when she worked at the prayer hot line. Tommy is the one that is able to cut through what Grace thinks she should do based on ‘Christian’ ideals. Ex: Telling Grace she wasn’t Jesus, when they were talking about Dave.
Carlos: Like many people, I had been waiting for this team up since at least 2x05 so when we finally got them interacting in 3x11 I was so excited, and they did not disappoint. (I have even started a fic series based on them being a support group for each other in regards to their significant others.
3 things we learned:
Do NOT mess with her family: Angry Grace is terrifying. She is such a kind and loving person, but fiercely protective of those she loves. Her scenes with Billy, with her being able to rant at him about how badly his actions had hurt her husband, and the rest of their fire family.
Her faith: There are times that she takes the teachings from church to mean that she has to suffer. We saw this in 2x10 when her back wouldn’t allow her to move out of the backseat of the car at the grocery store. We saw it again with the whole Dave situation.
Sarcasm Queen: Season 3 was full of quippy and sarcastic Grace, one of my favorite versions of her! Her banter with Judd is fantastic.
3 hopes for season 4:
More life outside the call center or maybe more time with others that work at the call center. – The call center is the one area that I think the OG 911 does a bit better. We have really only had Grace at dispatch, where in the OG we have had multiple people. We didn’t even get names until the end of Season 2 or the beginning of season 3. I would like to see her interacting with Joel and Brie, or even a new recurring character.
Grace & Charlie – I just want to see more of Grace and her baby girl
More Judd & Grace – They just have such great chemistry that their scenes are so fun to watch (even when they want to make you cry).
Next up: TK Strand

Chapter 13 - You have some news to share with Joel, but how do you tell him about the potential of a child in your lives? He has a big secret to share also, one that he has been keeping for a while. Will you be able to reconcile once you know these things about each other?
‘How were you supposed to tell him this?’ You think to yourself as you walk back home. The Doctor had promised you had her complete confidentiality, so that you had time to think about what you wanted to do. What did you want to do? You remember the conversation you had with Joel over month ago and he never sounded sure if this was something he wanted but could you bring yourself to get rid of it? It was part of you and him, this little thing inside you.
“How’d it go?” Joel asks looking up from his almost read book. You were so caught up in your thoughts you hadn’t realised you had made it all the way home and through the front door.
“Like I said, foot was perfectly fine” you smile at him. Could he tell something about you was different? Could he tell you knew something he didn’t?
“I have dinner ready, if you’re hungry” Joel moves into the kitchen to ready the table, guess he couldn’t tell.
“That sounds great” you reply as you remove your shoes and boots.
Dinner is pretty quiet between you both, Ellie wasn’t joining you tonight and was off with her friends.
“So there was something I wanted to talk to you about” he sits back in his chair putting his knife and fork down. Joel begins tapping his foot and rubbing his hands along the top of jeans, a sign you knew meant he was uncomfortable or nervous. You feel your heart in your mouth, 'he knows’ you think.
“I wanted to tell you this before we got married but there wasn’t much time” he sighs. Growing impatient with your own nerves you push him to spit it out “Joel, what’s going on?”.
As far you were told since you met him - he and Ellie had met after her friend Marlene died. He from then on looked after her and they set on a path to get here to Jackson, where he knew his brother Tommy had created a safer community, somewhere Ellie could grow up.
Joel leaps into the story, the real story that he never told you about Ellie being bitten, her immunity, trying to get her to the fireflies, what happened when he did, what he did and how he lied to Ellie. Once he finishes you sit for a minute, maybe more trying to let everything sink in.
You sit forward and put your finger on the table, emphasising each word that comes out your mouth
“You’re telling me, she has no idea what happened?” You ask.
“No I told her immunity meant nothing. I couldn’t let them - I saved her.” Joel says in a pleading tone.
“I can understand what you did Joel, I cant say I wouldn’t have done the same.  I love that girl… but to lie to her and to me” you trail off. It was all too much, knowing you were pregnant and being burdened with the knowledge of this too. You get up from your seat to put some space between you and Joel, he tries to follow but you put your hand out signalling him to stay put.
“I didn’t want us to have secrets between each other, christ Y/N you’re my wife!” His voice breaks slightly. You look at Joel, his body stiff, his eyes watery and his hands shifting uncomfortably as he wants to reach out to you.
“Oh so we can’t have secrets between us but its okay for you to pull me into this huge lie with Ellie? No” Your voice breaks and you start for the door.
You begin putting on your jacket and boots, “Where are you going baby?” He asks standing sheepishly in the doorway.
“My sister’s, I can’t stay here right now. I will only say something I regret” you gulp. He protests, offering to sleep on the sofa, to give you space but you are resigned that you won’t be spending the night here.
The Next Morning ____________
You wake up lying across from your sister, tucked under a blanker. You had sat up with her all night, of course you couldn’t tell her about what Joel had told you but you did let your other secret slip, you were pregnant.
“It’s not so bad Y/N, I always wanted to be an aunt and you’d make a great mother. If that’s what you want of course” Molly said rubbing your arm.
“I know - It’s just been a shock and well Joel…” you decide to stop there, explain you’re tired and would like to go to sleep.
Before either of you could get up there was a knocking at Molly’s door. She offers to go get it whilst you get dressed, you had patrol today with Joel and as much as you didn’t want to go, you would have to, how could you explain why you didn't want to? Molly answers the door to find Joel standing, looking tired and slightly dishevelled.
“Morning Molly, Is she here?” He asks quietly.
“She is, she’s just getting ready for patrol” Molly sighs. Joel replies with a simple okay and it falls silent between them for a bit as you head downstairs.
“You’re her husband Joel, you have to support her with whatever decision she makes. You got to look after“ you sharply make your way to the door so Molly cant say anymore. You thank her for having you for the night and you Joel set off on patrol in complete silence.
When you finally reach the post and are signing in Joel finally breaks the silence “What was she talking about back there?” He asks leaning over the paper not making eye contact.
“Molly? Nothing” You say dismissively looking out the window, the hills were covered in white snow.
“You’re a terrible liar, Y/N. Always have been” Joel exhales and crosses his arms. His eyes staring at you waiting for you to break.
“At least one of us is” you mutter under your breath at him.
“Why don’t I get to lie like you hmm?” You question.
“I didn’t lie. I just didn’t tell your the truth” he says perching against the table.
“Oh, pshh. You think you are going to get out of this on a fucking technicality?” You scold him and he has nothing to say again. You don’t know why but you just blurt it out “I am pregnant Joel”. Maybe it was out of anger or to get a reaction from him.
He uncrosses his arms slowly and puts his hands on the table to steady himself, he looks as shocked as you did last night.
“And you didn’t think you should tell me? Now who’s been lying to who?” He blurts out.
“You Bastard! That’s different and you know it. I wanted to tell you - I was about to tell you before you dropped this bomb on me!” You shout waving you hands in exclamation.
“I am sorry” Joel exhales placing the bridge of his nose between two fingers, shaking his head.
“Do you want to keep it?” He asks quietly looking up from his hands, and for the first time you had to give an answer “I think so. Do you want this baby? Your opinion matters too”. You ask him. Were you mad at him? Furious. Could you forgive him? Eventually, in time. Did you love him? Completely, even when you were furious with him.
“I - It’s not exactly the ideal environment for a child…” he says almost as quiet as a whisper.
‘Oh god’ you think, “You don’t want to do it, do you?” You sit yourself down on the seat at the table putting your head in between your legs… you feel you might be sick.
Joel sighs and crouches in front of you so as that he is looking up at you, “It’s not as simple as that Y/N, it’s not that I don’t want us to have it. I can’t think of anything better, its just in these circumstances… we really got to think this through”.
“I know that” you say finally lifting your head from your legs.
“I love you” he smiles softly and all you can say is “I know”.  You head for home.
A couple days later and you and Joel still hadn’t decided together what you were going to do. Yes you wanted to have the baby but not on your own and you didn’t want to force Joel into it either. He has left to meet with Tommy and Ellie outside of Jackson, something about Ellie needing new guitar strings. Things had been slightly off between Joel and Ellie but the last thing they would need is you getting involved. Looking at the clock you would have expected them back by now, it had been almost two hours longer than you would have expected.
“Where are they boy?” You ask Bruce who is sitting at your feet, tail wagging. You paced the house trying to find something to do for half an hour before you say “Fuck this” and head for the stables. You sneak in and take one of the horses, if Maria heard you were setting out on your own she would have stopped you.
You find the usual path to the music store blocked off and Ellie and Joel’s horses tied up outside a hotel. ‘They must have tried to make their way through here’ you think.
As you enter the hotel, you can hear gunfire from a far and make your way towards it just hoping you could make it to your family in time to help. You keep quiet to avoid any infected but move swiftly. You can hear Joel and Ellie now that the gunfire had stopped, their voices were slightly raised at each other. “Is there something else you’d like to rehash?” You hear Joel say in a stern voice.
You are about to enter the room when an infected comes running at you in the hallway, you aim and put a bullet right through its head just as Joel and Ellie come busting out the room guns pointed in your direction.
“What the hell are you doing out here?” Joel yells at you, “We could have shot you!”.
“You two had been gone for way too long, I was worried you had ran into trouble. Obviously you did” you sigh putting your pistol back in your holster.
“You shouldn’t be coming out here in your condition, what if something had happened?” He exclaims, he seemed pretty frustrated. Ellie is looking between you both confused “Her condition?”, but you don’t respond to her question and Joel gives her a look.
“Joel, enough nothing happened. We are all still in one piece”
“I will sort the bodies to take back to Jackson” Ellie leaves you both in the hallway to talk. She is still in earshot, as if Joel would let her leave his sight otherwise but you lower your voice.
“Bodies?” you ask and Joel explains that he and Ellie had found the young couple that left Jackson.
“Oh, their poor families.” You whisper.
“Yeah and we are still in one piece for now but we still have to get back. Were you even thinking about the baby when you rushed out here?” He huffs with arms crossed.
“I thought - we haven’t even decided what we are doing yet. I couldn’t not come after my family thinking something had happened to you” You say taking a step closer to Joel.
“Lets just get back home” He turns on his heels and goes to help Ellie.
When you arrive back home after breaking the news to the family of the kids you had found, you feel heavy and tired. Joel is still taking his jacket off when you crash onto the sofa, leaning back into the soft cushion comforting your sore back.
“You scared the shit out of me Y/N” Joel says from the hallway. You close your eyes and exhale deeply. There isn’t much more you could say on the matter, you would always protect Ellie and Joel.
When you open your eyes Joel is standing right in front of you “I wasn’t just worried about you… I - I was worried about the baby”.
That afternoon had been the first time he used the word ‘baby’ when talking about the situation. You stand up and take his hands “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to make you worry, alright”.
“Y/N I think I do want this child. Today when I thought something might have happened to either of you” but Joel can’t finish that sentence.
“Really, we are going to do this then?” You couldn’t help but smile slightly.
“We are doing this” he says pressing his lips to your forehead.

Consequence (Joel Miller x OC)
Tumblr media
Summary: What if Joel survived his injuries from the Abby and Fireflies attack but ends up with really bad amnesia. He can’t remember his wife, Ellie, or the Outbreak; only before. How will his family bring back the man they once knew?
Pairing: Joel Miller x OC
Note: Sorry I'm a little late posting an update. After so much sadness, why don't we take a break? We need some cute happy moments...my babies are too sad. :( Here's a flashback that is well needed right now. I hope you enjoy it <3
Chapter Six
The sun had long since set, the night unusually calm and still after a morning spent travelling and walking through the Wyoming Museum that Joel had surprised the girls with for Ellie’s birthday.
It had been fun and Ada had enjoyed every second of it. That was until they’d been separated and Ellie had seen the dead Firefly and his messages of hate and anger towards the group after they’d been forced to disband.
Ada had always wondered what would become of them after Marlene’s death, she supposed now she had her answer.
They’d set up their tents for the night with a roaring campfire burning away in between them as the horses grazed contently not too far away. The older woman sat a small distance from the campsite by the water’s edge of the deep pool flooded into the forest beds. Brown eyes stare into the lazy river flowing through the fallen rocks and dead trees, filtering through the cracks into a string of waterfalls that beautifully reflected in the soft moonlight above.
She watches the water move, her mind completely quiet and undisturbed. It’s strange even now to still have quiet moments like this. She’s so used to running for her life, constantly vigilant for the sounds of nearby infected or potential threats that sometimes find their way through. But now she can relax, she can breathe and it’s glorious. There’s just that tiny nag in the corner of her mind. It tugs gently until she can no longer ignore it. She glances back to the tents, towards the young girl that is currently occupying her mind. Ellie sits quietly by the entrance of her tent, headphones in her ears, comic book on her lap as she idly flips through the pages. While Joel tends to the fire, poking and prodding here and there to keep it burning long enough for their supper to be cooked. She’d made sure to pack enough for the whole journey but Ellie had  chosen to catch a few fish for tonight’s meal, what with it being her birthday and all. And as the teen was quick to remind both her and Joel…repeatedly...
My birthday, my rules.
It was the first time she’d seen it in Ellie’s eyes but it had definitely been there and it terrified her. That doubt. For so long Ellie had taken Joel and Ada’s words as fact, she had never brought up the Fireflies or what had happened in the hospital after they’d left so quickly. After all, what reason would they have to lie?
Ada felt her chest tighten at the thought. What would she say if the girl started asking questions? What would Joel say? For the first time in over a year, she was starting to feel guilty for hiding the truth of what really happened. Maybe Ellie deserved to know, maybe they never should have lied in the first place.
But as she glanced back across at her daughter, the fear went away. She was a mother and it was her duty to protect her child. No matter how old she was. And while she may not have been Ellie’s biological mom, she was every bit a mother to the girl whether they were related by blood or not. She'd raised Ellie from being a few days old after her mother had passed. And she had done the best she could with what she had.
She’s was so lost in her own barrelling train of thoughts, that she doesn’t hear Joel approaching until he sat beside her.
“Hey you doing alright over here?” He asks.
“Yeah I’m fine.” She lies and Joel instantly knows that something is wrong, the concern evident on his face as he leans closer towards her.
“No you’re not. You're worrying.” He says gently. “It's Ellie ain’t it? You saw it too.”
She doesn’t even have to question what he’s talking about. They both saw the look on Ellie’s face when they forced their way into the abandoned building and found the girl stood alone in the dark, her light illuminating the Firefly sign and the dark letters painted below.
‘Liars’
In a way it felt as if the very message was speaking directly to them. For what else could they call themselves for the stories they had spun, for the protection of a girl that they both wanted to save? That they both loved.
Ada said nothing as she moved to rest her head on Joel’s shoulder, the man sighing deeply, lifting his arm to wrap around her waist, his own head then rested upon hers. They held each other close as they’d done so many times before, staring out at the glistering water before them. The soft lapping of the water danced by the edge with the breeze of the night’s air, carrying with it the melody of chirping crickets in the long grass under foot.
“What are we gonna do?” The brunette whispers into the silence settled between them.
“With how things are going; I say we do nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“She ain’t asked about it, reckon there’s no reason to go pulling at strings until it’s time.” Joel reasoned. And he was right, Ellie was happy. She was making friends back in Jackson, learning new skills and discovering new talents. It wasn’t until Tommy had gifted her with a journal for her birthday that she actually discovered she was a pretty damn good artist. She had a bed to sleep in every night, a family to come home to, just like she’d always wanted. It was the closest thing Joel and Ada could remember from before; that somewhat resembled a normal life.
They had structure, a reason to get up in the morning. And it felt good. Eventually they moved from the water. Walking hand in hand towards the fire and sitting together, while Ellie continued quietly in her own little bubble, reading her comic book.
They glanced at one another and in that instant that their eyes met, it was decided they would keep their secret for a little longer. Ellie was happy and that was what mattered to them. Nothing more needed to be discussed.
Joel moved to tend to the burning fire, checking over the fish as it cooked above the flames. Though Ada had to quickly take over when the man sent her a lost look at the state of the food. The older man was talented at a lot of things throughout his twenty years of survival but it was obvious that cooking was not one of them. A trait that Ada found rather endearing about him. To meet this confident, strong and stoic man; only to then find out that he struggled to cook a simple can of soup without somehow managing to burn it to the bottom of the pan.
Although it was considered rather old-fashioned, Ada still enjoyed looking after Joel. After everything he had done for her and Ellie, something as simple as cooking him a decent meal made her feel like she was giving something back. She’d tried teaching him in the early days they’d arrived in Jackson but it seemed it was a skill Joel just couldn’t pick up, no matter how often she attempted it. It was a small thing but it made her feel better knowing that; even if she couldn’t control anything regarding Joel’s safety when he left on patrols, at least he wasn’t going out with an empty stomach.
With the food done Ada quickly served the meal, splitting the fresh fish between herself, Joel and Ellie. Who, as a typical teenager, said nothing as she took the plate from her mother and disappeared back into her tent, comic book under her arm and headphones still blasting in her ears. The older woman merely smiled, taking her seat back at Joel’s side as the two ate in a comfortable silence.
When they’d finished Joel had offered to wash up, a credit to his Texas manners as he moved towards the stream to fetch water. He heated it through after grabbing a rag from his backpack and once again found his place at Ada’s side.
She watched him as he worked, a smile tugging at her lips. It had been almost two years since she’d met this man and she still wasn’t quite sure what she’d done to deserve him.
If she was honest she had never loved anyone the way she loved Joel. It was almost laughable how irritating they once found each other when they'd first met. Constantly arguing over plans, ideas and routes to take to get to their destination. She’d wanted so badly to get rid of this gloomy grump, confident in her own abilities that she could find her way with Ellie on her own. And yet now she couldn’t even fathom the idea of living without him.
“Hey.” She called gently, grabbing Joel’s attention as he glanced her way. “ I wanted to thank you, for all this. Everything you’ve done for Ellie. I think this is without a doubt the best birthday she’s ever had. Back in Boston I could never really do a lot for her. Couldn’t even get her a decent present with those damn ration cards.”
“You don’t gonna thank me Ada, reckon this was good for all of us.” He said, wringing out the rag as he finished the washing up, then hanging it dry. Ada shuffled on her behind, grabbing her legs to cross them underneath her and leaned back on her arms to gaze up at him.
“Yes I do, you didn’t have to do this. And that tape you found her...I mean she loves it Joel.” He smiled at her words, his eyes moving to find Ellie still sat alone with her Walkman.
“You do realise she’ll be listening to that on repeat for months right?” She laughed with him. His face lit up with joy, it was the same feeling he’d felt when he gave her the gift in the first place. The pure wonder and glee when she played it. He looked back to Ada and his heart leaped in his chest when he saw the love in her eyes.
“Well...you know, speaking of presents, I do actually have something else.” He teased with a mischievous grin widening across his face. He kneeled down beside the woman, rummaging through his bag then pulled out a small vinyl cover. Ada’s mouth agape in surprise as she took the album from Joel, a small gasp leaving her, her smile hid behind the hand that rested on her chin.
“Joel...I...how did you…” She uttered, completely at a loss for words. It was a Fleetwood Mac album, one of her favourites in fact. The man beside her lowered himself back down, his hazel eyes level with hers.
“You said they were your favourite growing up, cause of your mom and I found a music store before we left Jackson so I figured...you know…” He explained and Ada was touched by how considerate he was. How sweet. She’d told him the story of her mother listening to the band throughout her childhood and teen years, when they’d first started to soften to one another while travelling through Pittsburgh. But that had been months ago and yet he had remembered every detail. A fact that Ada was quick to point out to him, but he just smiled and shrugged.
“I guess I do listen more than you think.” He simply said. And damn if Ada didn’t fall in love with this man all over again.
“I love it, thank you.”
“You’re welcome darlin’.”
She still hadn’t said the actual words to him yet. Which, when she thought about it seemed so ridiculous. She put the album to the side, unfold her legs and tackled the man in a hug. A reaction Joel clearly hadn’t been expecting as the force of it left them both in a tangled mess on the forest floor. Ada landing on top of him, as he let out a muffled grunt as he met the ground with his back. His arms wrapping around her middle and holding her in place, while hers found themselves round his neck, her fingers brushing through his hair.
“I love you.” She said breathlessly, her eyes never leaving his. She saw his throat quiver as he swallowed hard, his face softened as his calloused fingers caressed against her face. A gentle touch but one that still made her feel warm and giddy. He brushed her hair from her eyes, sweeping the brown locks behind her ear and smiled lovingly.
“I love you too.” He replied. The words said for the first time between them. He moved forward to kiss her, eyes sliding close, noses touching as they leaned closer.
“Oh come on guys!! Seriously?! Fucking gross!” Ellie bellowed, instantly killing the mood as Joel groaned letting his head fall back against the floor, his arms releasing Ada as she quickly scuffled from him and back to her feet. Hand reaching out to help Joel up.
Both adults stepped away from the other, attempting to put the distance between them as Ellie stared them down with a raised eyebrow.
“And on my fucking birthday, what are you trying to scar me for life or something?” She joked. But Ada and Joel were far too embarrassed to see the funny side. The girl continued with a deep chuckle, her tongue sticking out as she gagged and pulled faces at the whole thing.
“Oh man that image is gonna be stuck in my brain forever!” She groaned. “Get out! Get out” She whined tapping her head with her small fist as she squeezed her eyes closed. Turning on her heel and retreating back towards her tent.
Joel awkwardly cleared his throat when the girl had gone, looking anywhere and everywhere except towards Ada. The woman doing the same, her stomach fluttering and cheeks hot from endless blushing.
“Well that was uhhh...unexpected.” The man mumbled. Ada just laughed as she felt the tension melt away between them as Ellie shouted at the two to go to bed and jokingly threatened to ground them if they didn’t behave. Joel just shook his head at the girl and smiled at his love as they called it a night and headed towards their tent. Ellie watched them go and readied herself for first watch, taking the risk to glance through the tent door and seeing Joel and Ada had already fallen asleep. She'd never tell them but it was actually kinda cute when they cuddled up to each other. She was glad they were happy. It was nice.
Yeah  Ellie thought to herself as she settled in for the night.
Best. Birthday. Ever.

An analysis of The Last of Us Part II and its themes
I’ve seen a lot of people share their experience with playing The Last of Us Part II, and it’s safe to say most of it has been largely negative. It’s no secret this might be one of the most divisive games of all time, and it will probably stay that way for a long time after. I personally adored this game. I believe this is the masterpiece of masterpieces, and it’s the only game to ever top the emotions I felt when playing the first game, although I will say in terms of raw story (with nothing else like gameplay to support it) the first game is still a bit higher on the list for me.
But for all intents and purposes, when considering all aspects of this game, I think this is the single greatest accomplishment in game design and storytelling I’ve ever seen in a video game. That being said, I would like to try and respond to some of the criticisms this game has gotten, and furthermore, I’d like to try and analyze some of the themes I noticed when playing the game. Keep in mind this is MY opinion, and should not be taken as fact. This is just my experience, and I’ll respect yours one way or the other.
Take this as a MAJOR WARNING that there will be spoilers for both games in this post.
With that, let’s start with the common criticisms:
1.       “They killed Joel for no damn reason. He deserved better.” This is an easy one to tackle. For one, Joel most definitely did not deserve better. Even though we might love him for being the first game’s MC and have grown attached to him, there’s no way we can or should look past the fact that he, Joel, is a bad man. He even says himself in the first game that he and Tommy did some questionable things to survive in the 20 years between the outbreak and even during the events of TLOU. While he may be perceived as the hero of the franchise, when you look at his rap sheet, you start to notice he’s not so great after all. Take the ending of TLOU as the most glaring example, where Joel has been told Ellie must die in order for the Fireflies to develop a vaccine. His first and only reaction is to kill every single Firefly he sees and murder the surgeon who would have killed his “baby girl”. Would I have done any different in his shoes? Probably not, but that’s the beauty of the first game. Its ending and the ambiguity of Joel’s morality given his actions is one of the driving forces that make the first game so spectacular and why it’s still being discussed 7 years later. Now let’s talk about the second point to this criticism: “He died for no reason”. If you recall, the people who killed him were former Fireflies, one of which (Abby) was the daughter of the surgeon whom Joel unceremoniously killed. In their eyes, they had every right to go after Joel. Like Anthony Caliber, one of the best TLOU speedrunners, said in one of his recent livestreams, “Joel signed his own death sentence when he killed Marlene and the surgeon back at the hospital in TLOU1”. While it may seem overly zealous to us as players who have grown to love Joel, if the roles had been reversed would you not do the same? Would you not want revenge for the killing of your father? And isn’t that exactly what Ellie is doing in this game, which most players justify in this hatred of Abby?
2.       “Joel was out of character in giving out his name and trusting strangers. They dumbed him down for the sake of plot.” As I recall, Joel literally gave Henry and Sam his name and followed them out to their hideout barely 30 seconds after meeting them and beating the shit out of Henry. Joel may be an untrusting person at heart but he always does so with reason. The most common reason people give of this is “He didn’t trust the guy asking for help in Pittsburg and ran him over so why trust Abby and her gang”. First of all, that was literally the one situation Joel had already been on the other side of, and knew perfectly well it was rehearsed. On the flipside, he and Tommy had just saved Abby and literally mention there’s no other way to go other than with her because there’s a huge blizzard and a herd was after them. And especially now, after Joel has been living in Jackson for 4 years now and has been living comfortably in a community very obviously open to new people. Abby’s group gave them no reason to distrust them, and giving out his name, in any other situation, would have made no difference in the outcome. It was just unfortunate they happened to be after him.
3.       “I hate playing as Abby, why are they trying to make me sympathize with her?” That’s the whole point, they’re not. The entire game, you keep rooting for Ellie to find and kill this woman who wronged you, and when you’re forced to play as her, you’re understandably angry. You’re upset, and you feel you have to slog through this seemingly endless section of the game. But as you keep playing, much like I did, you start seeing the other side of the story. Abby is not the villain the game paints her out to be when she killed Joel. She’s another human being with human emotions and a very real reason to hate Joel and to want him dead. As I said before, Abby is doing exactly what Ellie eventually does after Abby kills Joel.
4.       “Why would Ellie go through all that effort to not kill Abby in the end?” I will touch on this in the analysis of the themes, but simply put, it was about breaking cycles.
Now I’d like to start defending how and why I believe this is a masterpiece by first taking a look at one of the admittedly less touched upon parts: gameplay. This aspect usually takes a step back when it comes to narrative-based games, and it is obviously not the most resounding part of this game, but it is clearly not taking a back seat either. The flow of both combat and mellower scenarios in this particular game is astounding. When battling opponents, the AI feels like one of the most intelligent I’ve ever seen in a video game. The way the enemies communicate between each other, telling the others when the player is out of ammo or when they’re flanking to create much more nuanced fight sequences, coupled with the expanded worlds Naughty Dog has come up with to create a seamless experience when fighting hordes of enemies without it feeling stale or repetitive, is one of the most immersive gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Each encounter feels unique and challenging in some ways you may not have felt before in the game, and by the end you’re so immersed in that feeling that going through the Santa Barbara group (to me, at least) was almost automatic and I could see so many different options for me to approach each situation as it came my way.
Likewise, Naughty Dog have managed to turn the puzzle solving from the first game, where you simply had to find a dumpster to step on or a door to open with a shiv, and incorporate the environment and world into it, finding clever ways to get over obstacles without simply having a step-up ladder be the end of it. The mechanics that went into the rope puzzles, breaking windows to get to previously unexplored territory (which is admittedly not new in gaming, but still a cool concept to add to the franchise) paired together with so many more new little features to bring the world they created to life, and bring you into it as well.
As always, and as was the case with the first one, you can’t talk about The Last of Us without talking about the soundtrack. The haunting score created by the masterful mind of Gustavo Santaolalla, a fellow Argentinean like me, brought to life some of the most heart-wrenching moments and the most beautiful ones as well, in a way that can only be achieved with amazing sound design and music. The main theme song, which is a sort of homage to the one from the first, takes a much darker approach, choosing instead to focus on the bass and that resounding low voice in the background, setting the tone for the rest of the game: a much darker, grittier, and grounded experience that will pull no punches. Santaolalla managed to create a score that mimics the first one in melody and rhythm, while succeeding in mirroring it to create a more dissonant accompaniment to the gruesome story you’re brutally killing your way through.
Another aspect of the game that deserves all the praise it gets, and one that people seem to at least be in consensus about, is the graphics and animation design. I can safely say this is hands down the most beautiful, gorgeous, astounding, breathtaking game I’ve ever laid my eyes upon, and that might not be enough adjectives to fully encapsulate how I feel about the graphics in this game. One can argue all day about the morality of the characters in the game or the balance between right and wrong that Naughty Dog so masterfully plays with in the story, but one thing is for sure: The graphics design team deserves so much credit for actually bringing the story and the characters we know and love to such vivid life. You can see it in the little things, like the veins in Joel’s arm as he plays “Future Days” by Pearl Jam and the facial expressions Ellie can make if you stand in front of a mirror during the museum flashback; you can also see it in the larger things, like the jaw-dropping backdrops that range from a beautiful mountain range in the snow to the downtown Seattle skyline. No moment will be wasted by stopping your pace to just admire the absolutely gorgeous view you’re presented with every time you enter a new game world. The attention to detail in animation is also not lacking at all, with so many little actions being given special treatment as we see Ellie patch herself up and still having the actual bandage over her arm instead of disappearing like any other game, or the way Ellie’s fingers perfectly (and correctly) play chords without resorting to generic hand gestures. You can see the love and care the developers have for this game in every tiny crack in the game that simply takes your breath away and that sometimes you won’t even see from the vastness of the world around you.
And finally, the story. It is definitely a divisive story, and Neil Druckmann did warn us it would be. There were times, namely the moment they switched the POV to show me the first 3 days from Abby’s perspective, when I was genuinely wondering what the hell they were thinking. My faith in Naughty Dog never wavered, though. I kept playing because I thought, “There must be some reasoning for this.” And to my greatest relief, it finally clicked for me a few hours into Abby’s section. Namely, the moment where she meets Lev and Yara, two Seraphites that defected after the former shaved his head. At first, it seemed weird that they would be cast out for such a stupid reason, but then you start to get to know them, and you understand the real reason they had to leave their religious cult. As I said before and will say again, this is a game about perspective. Up until that point, I just wanted Abby dead, albeit with some guilt since learning that it was her father Joel killed in that operating room. But seeing Abby’s willingness to help total strangers, much like Joel did at the start of the game, was what sold me on this game’s concept. The purpose of this story is to make you feel the regret and the weight of the actions you impart on the world, as you can see the carnage Ellie left in her wake during your time as Abby, seeing Abby’s friends butchered by either Ellie or Tommy, realizing they’re no different than the villains we have such tunnel vision about. The ending is something I’ll get to in the themes, but I just have to say I love the way it’s such a parallel to the first game’s ending, up to the point of divisiveness in the people who actually played and finished the game (which at the time of writing this is less than 4% of players).
Now onto the themes. One of the things people always praise about the first game, and rightfully so, is its themes and how well it portrays them through certain characters to create a cohesive and coherent story that pulls at your heartstrings and makes you root for the “heroes” of the game. This time it’s not much different, with the minor exception that this time, there are no heroes. Just like Neil Druckmann said many times during the development of Part II, “While the first game was about love, this game is about hate”, which is one of the main themes.
1.       Hatred: I can safely say there have been very few times of my gaming life where I’ve been so viscerally angry (in a “good” way) while playing a video game as I have as I tore down through countless enemies that got in the way of me and my target. This game will let out the worst parts of you in ways you can’t even imagine, and will make you take a look at the way we glorify violence in video games without the usual preachy tone of “video games cause violence”. Like I said before, this is a game that mirrors the first one while paying homage to its themes. To take a page out of Abby’s book, it’s like a coin. There are always two sides to it. On the one hand, the first game’s main theme was love, and how loss and grief can be overcome with it with the proper care and time. The Last of Us Part II shows us the uglier side of human nature, which is anger, despair and a natural desire for revenge (another theme). Both games show us the natural progression of a grieving person, but both of them take wildly different approaches. Granted, we don’t know how brutal and vicious Joel was right after losing Sarah, but it’s safe to assume he was nothing short of a monster, which eventually didn’t really help in dealing with that loss until he found love and hope in a little girl whose safety was now his utmost responsibility. In Ellie’s case, she’s still in that first stage. Ellie as a character has always been reckless and foolhardy, and her actions in this game are a testament of how well Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross know their characters. The entire game, right up until the final moments where she’s about to finish Abby off, her actions are fueled by a rage and desire to exert justice onto those who’ve wronged her. In other words, she’s looking for revenge.
2.       Revenge: Both main characters have at least one thing in common, and it is their desire to avenge their father/father figure. I truly believe that Joel’s death was not only justified (from a storytelling perspective) but also crucial to the development of a sequel that both enhanced the world of The Last of Us while building onto it with new ideals and perspectives. The idea this time is definitely not one we haven’t seen before in so many other mediums: “Revenge is bad and is never worth it” Seems trivial to even suggest it when we all know the outcome, but The Last of Us Part II manages to not only build upon the idea that revenge is a double-edged sword, but it also manages to balance the perspectives within that cycle to attempt to explore the psyche of the characters we’ve put into the boxes of “hero” and “villain”. And subsequently, they manage to break that characterization by showing us both sides of the aforementioned coin to see, in no unclear terms, that the consequences of our actions when dealing with vengeance always circle back to expose the nastiest side of our nature. It stands to reason that we, as the player, would at first be on board with Ellie “finding and killing every last one of them”, and demonizing Abby for not only killing but torturing possibly one of the most beloved characters in gaming history. We want her dead. We want her to suffer for the crime she’s committed. Yet, in our quest for vengeance and justice, would we not be succumbing to the same cycle that brought Abby to killing Joel in the first place? Did she not think, from her perspective, that she was entirely justified in killing the man who had not only destroyed the one chance humanity had against the Cordyceps, but also murdered her father in cold blood? Are we not the same as Abby for wanting her dead after she kills one of our own? When does it end? And that’s the real question. This whole thing, the lust for revenge that can only be quenched with cold-blooded murder, is just another facet to our complex and grey morality as human beings. It’s natural for us to feel angry and upset at this, and I believe all the hatred people give this game that stems from it forcing you to play as Abby is the exact nature the game is trying to bring out of us and show to us in a mirror.
3.       Cycles: While this may not be such an obvious catch as the first two, it’s still very much ingrained in the inner workings of this game’s narrative and how both characters view the world according to their reality and perspective. The concept of revenge, as stated above, is a repetitive one. One that causes cycles and events to repeat themselves if left unchecked, and The Last of Us Part II plays with these masterfully. Starting the game with a heartbreaking moment and setting the dark tone for the rest of the game is what starts the first part of this cycle, which is Ellie wanting to avenge Joel’s death, much like Abby avenged her father’s death after 4 years of despair, planning, and training. Ellie’s desire to kill Abby is what leads her down the path we would characterize, were she some random character and not the main one of the franchise, as the villain’s route, going down a dark path that prompts her to mindlessly and mercilessly slaughtering countless people whose names you hear from their friends’ mouths when you kill them, to the point where you end up getting to Abby’s closest friends and companions and murdering them too, not unlike Abby murdered Joel. It is a sobering feeling to realize the character you most love and root for is, in the eyes of the other main character, as much of a villain (if not more) as we as players make Abby out to be. It is at the end of the game, which a lot of players had qualms about, where Ellie is beating Abby within an inch of her life that she realizes this is not worth it. Killing Abby will not bring Joel back, and will certainly not bring her any satisfaction, as showcased by how traumatized Ellie was after the killings of Abby’s other friends and the fact that she still kept seeing Joel’s lifeless body as she attempted to drown Abby on that coast. Then, as we are mercilessly choking the life out of her, which is yet another example of the visceral anger the game elicits from the player, we see a different memory of Joel. One of hopefulness, where Joel is playing the guitar and smiling. It is at that moment that Ellie realizes the only thing she can do now is to move on with her life and accept Joel’s death as something that happened. To add onto this realization, it’s probably good to mention that Ellie must have seen some of herself in Lev in that killing Abby would have left him (if not dead) in a state much like the one she, Ellie, was at the start of the game. Coming back to the theme of cycles, if Ellie killed Abby, what’s to stop Lev from coming after Ellie the same way she came after Abby, and so on and so forth. Both these things coupled help Ellie finally break the cycle and go back to the farm, where she’s greeted with the consequences of her actions in a more emotional and real way than the PTSD: Dina being gone and Ellie leaving her guitar behind, symbolizing her letting go of Joel’s memory and accepting her reality.
The game scares us; it scares me. It is a harrowing experience that will only get better with time and will, in my humble opinion, go down as one of the greatest games of all time for years to come. No matter the context, and no matter the medium, I wish it were easy to find such real, emotional, and powerful pieces of art as this one more often. But alas, we will have to wait and see. As someone whose name I can’t seem to remember said: “This will mark the gaming industry and divide it between ‘Before TLOU2 and After TLOU2”

Things to remember about The Last of Us 2
...and why we should not feel negative and assume Dina is going to be dead and that we know everything that’s going to happen. (Bear with me here.)
1. The story told in that trailer is not linear. It’s easy to see where they’re fucking with us. The disembodied gunshot, Dina is missing, there is a new faction of cultists among us, etc. But none of it is knitted together in a neat fashion. There is no concrete story in this story trailer, only pieces and fragments and what’s going on. This is part and parcel for Naughty Dog. I remember seeing somewhere that Naughty Dog is trying to create a sort of big, massive atmosphere and story trailer that exists around all the trailers in combination with each other. But it’s all just a big, unfinished mosaic, and there’s so much missing. We cannot make any sure calls yet. All we have is some general idea of what might be going on....sort of. TBH, there’s still so much mystery surrounding Joel--where he is, whether he is dead or just like, a figment of Ellie’s imagination. We may know less now than we ever did.
2. Anna? We have still learned nothing new about the buff woman from the second trailer. Who is she? Is she Anna? Is she Ellie’s fucking mom? Is Ellie’s fucking mom alive? Is this a flashback? She’s like the star of her own trailer, and she has her own poster, so we know she’s important, even as she is not shown here. I get the sense this story may have multiple POVs, and/or it is not fully linear. This game may be a lot bigger than the last game. Also, remember that the Firefly insignia can be seen on the stop sign in the original teaser. Some fans deduced that the teaser takes place in Seattle, which is where Ellie seems to be headed in the last trailer. So...what if something crazy happened? Like what if Ellie finds out that Marlene lied, that her mom is alive and was just like left for dead somewhere, and Ellie was abducted as a baby and sequestered basically until she came of age, to be harvested for her immunity? What if it was Marlene who wrote that letter, pretending to be Anna? What if Ellie learns this? If she thinks the Fireflies killed her mother, that’s enough to send her on a fucking rampage. And that also really complicates Joel’s lie. Like, thank god he didn’t let her go under the knife, dying for the cause that took her away from her mother. This could potentially catapult her relationship with Joel and their journey together--which I think will be a journey of reconnection after some years of strain. Now, this brings me to...
3. The Fireflies. Ellie talks to Tommy about her plan in this past trailer, not Joel. Why? Tommy warns her about the “faction” she’s going up against, and how powerful it is. We then see her fighting the uber-religious cultists, and so maybe the quick assumption is that Ellie is going up against THEM. BUT. Tommy used to be a Firefly. If there’s anyone who knows about what to expect from the FIREFLIES, it’s him. SO like, it is very possible that Ellie is going after the FIREFLIES, the faction that she thinks killed her mom, then tried to kill her, that perhaps they’re HQ’ed in Seattle, and that this new faction just sort of...gets in the way. Also, the second trailer makes associations between our Mystery Buff Woman and the Third Faction of uber-religious cultists. She is fighting them, too. If she’s Ellie’s mother...we’re in for a fucking hell of a reunion.
4. Dina’s Bracelet. Ellie is wearing Dina’s bracelet in both the gameplay and the latest trailers. Okay, this makes it seem like she may be “avenging” her, but a couple more things to remember here: We don’t know Dina that well. Yes, she’s cute and bubbly and sweet and maybe like, a little bit of a rebel to Ellie. Like she knows herself in ways Ellie does not. BUT. It’s unlikely we’ll meet her and then five minutes later, genius writer Neil Druckmann is going to kill her off, and then somehow expect a character we JUST met to drive an entire revenge plot. Like, no. Trust the writers. They have a stellar track record. They are very smart, and very talented storytellers. Trust Neil!
Personally, and this is just my two cents but...I have thought that Dina is probably okay. They’re making us think Dina is dead, but like, why not just say so then? If it’s that simple and that straightforward, what’s with all the subterfuge? Here’s what I think: Dina’s disappearance is a red herring. Dina’s bracelet could be like a symbolic ribbon or a scarf that a lady would give to her knight before he rides off into battle. Something to remember her by, as she knows Ellie can’t be stopped, but she cannot go with her, or else Ellie won’t let her come, because she’s learned a lot from her old man, whether she likes it or not, and one of those things is, you protect the things you love, at all costs.
Okay, so that’s all I got for now. My number one take-away for you here though should be: TRUST THE WRITERS AT NAUGHTY DOG. They’re good at what they do. Let them be, and let them work. They’ve got this.
Please feel free to add to this with other stuff we know and also do not know. There’s still so much!!

Her questions about Tommy 😭
Every scene I get of them now just reminds me of their winter scene and my brain melts a little more
I am thirteen minutes in and it’s been?? 45 minutes of watching??
OOH WERE GETTING TO KNOW??
okay okay so Tommy convinced Joel to join a group that moved to Boston. So that’s how he got there, good to know. “Mostly to keep an eye on him. Keep him alive” we love big brothers. “That’s where we meet Tess.” yo so Tommy knows Tess that’s cool. “And that whole crew, we uh….well for what it was, it worked. Then Tommy meets Marlene. She talks him in to joining the ‘fireflies’. Same mistake he made when he was 18. Wants to save the world…Fireflies all delusional.” mmm thank you for giving me another scene to dissect and think about for the next week. Joel “let’s keep our histories to ourselves” Miller

she’s trying to keep him from talking about it 😭
“Stay close.” throwback to Tess telling Ellie that in ep1. Anyway dad count #14
The protective hand reach out™
oh shoot it’s the woman
Kathleen
okay so who is Henry then (HI IM DUMB AS FUCK TOTALLY BLANKED ON HENRY. ABSOLUTELY 100% BLANKED. post episode me is much clearer on all this so ignore how dumb I am)
So she’s got a personal vendetta that went too far or something?
“I delivered you. I held you in my hands. I never told them anything about your brother.” Hmmm interesting
So Kathleen’s brother was breaten to death for some reason. This man, who I guess knows both of them, never told ‘them’ (fireflies? Hunters?) about her brother, but a man named Henry did. So Kathleen is trying to get info from this guy about Henry I guess. Whoever Henry is. Or whoever her brother is. I don’t know I’m confused
“I’m your doctor” is this man gonna be THE doctor? Maybe not? Or does she have something wrong that she needs a doctor for so she can’t lose him?
JEFFREY PIERCE. man he didn’t change his voice at all
DAMN she just shot him
wow that is. a lot of trucks.
GUN SAFETY LESSON?
his head in his hands 😭 poor man needs a break
ARE YOU OKAY??;!;? HELLO??;!;? nothing could’ve prepped me for that
“Im alright.” Man, when was the last time he was genuinely asked that :( he looks like he hasn’t been asked that in ten years
NOT HIS VOICE BEING SHAKY “are you.. alright?” FUCK OFF. you think he’s hesitant to say it because he don’t actually want to care if she is because he’s still trying to not get attached. Anyway dad count #15
i fucking LOVE these two DAMN. Definitely gonna have this scene on repeat for the next week
Alright get the unspoken stuff out of the way please don’t sit in the awkward silence
“Thing is, is…I didn’t hear that guy comin’. You shouldn’t have had to have…y’now?” “Well, you’re glad I did, right?” “Well, you’re just a kid. You shouldn’t know what it means to…It’s not like you killed him, but, shooting a…i know what it’s like. First time that you uh, hurt someone like that. If you uh…im not good at this.” “Yeah, you really aren’t.” “I mean it was my fault! You shouldn’t have had to. AND IM SORRY” HODHS LEAVE ME ALONE JUST FUCKING STOMP MY HEAD INTO THR CURB PLEASE.

“Okay?” And she’s just :D
an error occurred this is not the time
He literally did not have to keep his hands on hers for that long. but I am not one to complain
SHE LOOKS SO EXCITED WATCHING HIM 😭
“Nuh uh, you put it in your pack. You’ll shoot your damn ass off.” He knows she’s trigger happy. Dad count #17? 😭

“I gotcha” being Joel’s thing. I cant wait to hear him say it more
“Where would you be without me, huh?” “By now, Wyoming.” “Oh yeah, walked into that one.”

HIM TURNING OVER TO TALK TO HER
“You don’t have to. I’m just saying…it isn’t fair. Your age. Having to deal with all of this…” “So it gets easier when you get older?” “No, not really. But still.”
“The reason I asked if you’d hear the glass or not is cause I’ve noticed you don’t hear too well from your right side. Is it cause you were shot there?” “Probably more from shooting. So if you want to keep your hearing you better stick to that knife.”
“Joel?” “Hm?” This is perhaps the biggest dad thing he’s done all episode.
HES TRYINF SO HARD TO FIGHT THE SMILE. NOT HIM AXTUALLT FUCKING LAUGHING. HE FUCKING LAUGHED. HE LAUHJED.
“That is so goddamn stupid.” “You laughed, motherfucker!” “I didn’t laugh.” “Yes, you did!” “Jeez, I’m losing it.”
NOT THEM GIGGLING TOHEYEHR. I’m getting chills what the fuck. they’re giggling together.
“Go to sleep.” “You go to sleep!”
I have. the biggest grin on my face.
I know he slept soundly that night. I KNOW he had the best sleep he’s had in a while. and it’s all bc he went to her giggling with this girl he very obviously does not care about and has no fatherly affection towards whatsoever
HENRYBAND SAM <3 cant wait for next episode heartbreak

Season 3 Character Highlights - 3 Things
Character: Judd Ryder
Favorite 3 scenes:
3X16 “Shift-less”: This whole episode was such a great showcase of Judd’s desire and need to help and protect his children, sometimes even from themselves. Judd and Wyatt had been slowly building a relationship, but mostly off screen. It felt like their bond was cemented. I think that Judd taking Wyatt to the family ranch was such a big step in Wyatt truly accepting his additional family.
3x04 “Push”: Charlie’s birth scene was beautiful. That man will literally do anything to be with his wife when she needs him.
3x18 “A Bright and Cloudless Morning”: The whole scene where we see the after effects of the building collapse. The dude being a douche, Grace calling him, Hugo dying, the douche realizing that Judd knows what he was talking about. -also the part where he is still campaigning for Wyatt to get a job.
Favorite 3 lines: funny, heartfelt, or ridiculous
3x18 “A Bright and Cloudless Morning”: “I’m a fire fighter!” – Judd Ryder is someone that has always known who he was, so when a douchebag told him he was a ‘cripple’, Judd reiterated who he is. I just love the way he said it, like “Fuck off, I am a fire fighter”
3x02 “Thin Ice”: “Because you are an excellent observer of your fellow man sir.” To Captain Andrews when the Cap tells him Judd and Mateo would just take the jack hammers, even if he said no. Another example of Judd giving his all for his family.
3x06 “The ATX Files”: “I got a 17-year-old Texas boy who doesn’t eat meat and never fired a gun outside of a game console, so that’s about as alien as it gets to me.” He was desperate to bond with the son he had only recently learned about, but was struggling to find something with a little common ground. This man thinks that Owen is crazy, but this time Owen’s crazy could be what gives Wyatt and Judd something to do together.
Favorite 3 dynamics:
Grace, Wyatt, & Charlie: There will be a more Grace/Judd 3 things when I get to my 3 things Dynamics/Ships. Judd doesn’t know how to love any other way than with his whole heart, and this is particularly true when it comes to his wife and children. The way that he whole heartedly embraced having a surprise 17-year-old son that he hadn’t known about, only a short time after his daughter was born. I wasn’t sure about this storyline in 3x05, but by the end of 3x06 I realized we are getting to see Judd be a dad to a baby and a teenager at the same time, it ended up being my favorite Judd storyline this season.
Tommy: The support that the Vega & Ryder families give each other is wonderful to see. The chemistry with Tommy & Judd is so authentic.
Owen: One of my favorite parts of the Judd/Owen relationship is that Judd consistently lets Owen know when he is being ridiculous. I love how when he thinks a question that Owen asks is insane, he just doesn’t answer. He is the biggest Owen troll, but with a deep respect and another genuine relationship.
3 things we learned:
Family: He learned that he had a 17-year-old son from a one-night stand in 2005 with Marlene Harris – this was discovered by Wyatt when he did a website DNA test.
Sentimental: He was so proud to be using the same baseball mitt that his father and grandfather had used.
Judd & TK share a single brain cell: In my many rewatches season 3, I have noticed a few similarities between these 2.
Example # 1: After the twin’s birthday party, Judd asks Tommy “If she is feeling better” because of her annoyance at Julius showing up. Then after the Catan fight, TK asks Nancy “If she was feeling better” due to Mateo leaving the loft mid-game.
Example # 2: in “Down to Clown” they both bring home strays. In Judd’s case his wife brings the stray home, but only for a meal. Judd is the one that invites him to stay FOR A WEEK, knowing that this particular coworker isn’t on Grace’s list of favorite people – Grace hardly maintains her sanity & messy house. TK brings home a lizard that was pulled from a leg, so at least he didn’t bring home a human stray. But the fact it came out of a leg and was a reptile makes this just as bad (to those of us that are not fans of them), and also left Carlos clinging to his sanity and his orderly home in complete disarray.
3 hopes for season 4:
Family: More time spent with his family, both Grace & the kids, but also his father, and it would be interesting to meet at least one of his older brothers. It is sometimes hard to remember that he has multiple older brothers and is the baby of the family.
Work: Season 4 could be a time to have Judd take more of a leadership role. Owen has to be getting close to retirement age. Not sure on Owen’s exact age, but Rob is 58, and the average minimum age for retirement is mid to late 50’s. Not that the timeline on this show makes any sense, but yeah.
Fire Family: I would love to see Judd and the other members of the house, other than just Owen and Tommy. I think a game night with Judd and Grace would add even more competition and opportunities for some great banter.
Next up: Grace Ryder
