How to run from your hometown when Russian shelling is never-ending. That's not like the world must work. That's not how happy childhood must be. Never.

6-year-old Vika and 1.5-year-old Kyrylo and their mother agreed to leave the frontline city of Toretsk. Before the dangerous journey, they put on bulletproof vests. 

- You see, we are all wearing vests. Come back to me. 

The White Angels police evacuation team came to pick up the family. Every day, Russian troops shell Toretsk with artillery, rockets, and bombs. Due to the intensified shelling, the mother decided to leave. 

- How do they endure the shelling?

- Easy, they don't even pay attention. 

- Are they used to it?

- Yes, they are.

- I try not to frighten them with it, it's just something that fell somewhere. 

There is a forced evacuation of children in Toretsk. "White Angels" persuade parents to leave as well. When the shelling is over, the family moves from the armored car to a passenger car. 

- We're going to drive this car. Let me fix your ear. 

They are heading to a hostel in Dnipro.

- Dunya. I also took the dog and the bunny with me. 

According to the National Police, about a dozen children remain in Toretsk. 85% of the pre-war population of Toretsk left the city.

#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . Ukraine’s Air Force struck and destroyed a concentration of Russian troops in Toretsk, Donetsk Oblast on March 21, the Armed Forces General Staff reported on March 23.

Ukraine’s attack reportedly “completely destroyed” the position of the troops from the 1st Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 103rd Motorized Rifle Regiment who were hiding in their shelter in the city of Toretsk.

Among the casualties were airborne assault groups and drone operators, the General Staff claimed.

“Exact numbers are still being clarified, but the destruction of their shelter and personnel greatly diminishes the ability of the Russian military to operate effectively in the Toretsk axis,” the General Staff wrote in a Telegram message which was accompanied by a video of the strike.

Toretsk, which lies roughly 20 kilometers southwest of Bakhmut, has seen fierce fighting in recent months and Ukraine launched a counterattack in late February and early March. The city is largely occupied by Russian troops.

President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the nearby city of Pokrovsk on March 22, where he previously said the situation had recently stabilized amid hotly contested battles. He warned that Russia is attempting renewed offensives in various parts of the front line, including in Kharkiv Oblast.

On March 23, Ukraine’s Third Assault Brigade announced it had liberated the village of Nadiya in Luhansk Oblast.

The developments take place as Ukraine meets with U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia on March 23 to discuss a ceasefire proposal. The U.S. will also meet with Russian officials in Riyadh on March 24.

Life in the basement

His friends and colleagues have evacuated, and his family has gone: “My mom was sick, there was no heating in winter, so I sent her to Dnipro for free treatment. Then she died. Now I’m alone, I have no one left.” “I don't believe the radio – I believe only my eyes. This has been going on for 10 years now, and I don't know where it will end.” In the next basement room, where 73-year-old Tetiana lives with her daughter Oksana and an elderly neighbor, a woman's voice, speaking Russian, is just audible on the radio. ”We listen to anything, just to hear something. I'm grateful to my neighbor because he made a battery-powered radio, otherwise we'd be like moles here. You could go crazy just listening to explosions,” says Tetiana. Tetiana now takes care of dogs and cats that people left in their apartments when they fled the city. “I have eight dogs here, and I don't know how many cats,” she says. “I feed as many of them as I can find – I can't even count them. They’re all hungry and dehydrated. I go out to feed them and run into the bushes if there's a drone flying. It's very scary. But what can I do? I feel sorry for the animals too.” Tetiana previously worked at a sanitary inspector’s office, and her daughter worked in a mine, maintaining flashlights and lanterns for the miners. “I don't think about anything, I don't want to think about things – I don't want to be sad. We think about staying alive. We’re on the brink.” She starts to cry. “We’re on the brink. But I can't leave the animals behind.” The women have some food and water, but not enough candles and batteries for their flashlights. Their phones are all dead, and anyway there’s no cellphone signal here. They try not to leave the basement because of the constant attacks. “Shells and drones are falling all the time, and the worst things are the warplanes. Warplanes and artillery,” says Tetiana.
