Sometimes when I cry it’s because I’m so frustrated in a situation and I feel powerless.

Like, I know what I can do or would like to do.. but as a polite and meek woman I’ll shed a tear, drop my head and quietly sniffle to myself rather than calmly stand up and slam your face into the table because you deserve it and are a poor excuse for a human or a man.

Taking a moment to be smug because I’m famously weather paranoid. Enough that it exasperates my brother at times. We were supposed to drive to Houston today, but when I woke up and saw that it was a) dark and humid outside and b) there was a cold front sweeping through and c) the Houston forecast showed severe thunderstorms in the afternoon with a possibility of hail and damaging winds, I called my brother and said “Let’s do this tomorrow.”

I could tell by his voice he was kind of annoyed and probably thinking, there she goes being crazy again. We had a nice downpour here and then the sun came out. My husband commented on how beautiful it looked outside. “Uh-huh,” I said as I watched the towering thunderstorms passing to the north.

Dad showed me the radar. “It looks clear! Look, the storm is moving north.”

“No, the storm is moving east. That radar motion means there’s a higher chance of tornadoes thanks to wind shear,” I said. “We’ll go tomorrow.”

A while later, my friend in Houston sent me a picture of a funnel cloud. The radar shows a line of damaging storms moving through the metro area with another behind it that we would have driven straight into had we gone.

So yeah, I’m feeling pretty good about my choices today.

17. bonfire or indoor fireplace?

Bonfire gets all the outdoor aesthetics and makes for a good focal point for gathering/conversation. Indoor fireplace feels more cramped and is more likely to burn your house down.

24. favorite computer game? (specifically one you would have exclusively played on a pc, probably pre-2010.)

Oregon Trail is one of the only ones I've made a point of seeking out as an adult (along with Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego?). Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 and Zoo Tycoon are pretty awesome, though I watched siblings play those more than I played those myself.

Storm Clouds

When I say I miss home, this is what I mean. Thunderheads like cauliflower, roiling clouds so low you could touch them if you stood on top of an average building, ominous darkness, eerie glow, air that's alive with the low pressure. And all the other phenomena you get before and after: hanging mists, rainbows, mammatus and undulatus clouds, golden or pink skies, sunbursts, etc..

All photos mine. Some edited to bring out colour and contrast not captured in the original photos, others left as is.

Four of the photos in this post are from a storm last summer that ended up producing a tornado. Most of the others are from storms that were severe enough that watches were in place but no tornado. And the rest were just a standard thunderstorm or rainstorm. Can you guess which were which? :)
