So Danny just rocks up to the house with this newly gotten dog, fresh off the street, he's difficult to pin down at first, but he eventually gains his trust enough with treats and food to get him in his flat, the first thing he notices is that he shivers, his fur just isn't cutting it for some reason, so he gives him some blankets and the little pup loves it, he eats well, can walk well, and doesn't seem to have any broken bones, but he does seem a little haggered, maybe trauma? But Danny for right now can't do much about it, cause he doesn't let him touch him yet, not wanting flees he puts flee powder on every surface he interacts with, and to stop the place from becoming unfit for human habitation he puts plastic wrap, newspaper and scent absorbent sand on the floor of his confines, a little baby pen, and makes an effort to clean the little monsters stables, he was a lotta hard work, but, he couldn't just leave a puppy out on the streets, shivering, probably ill, parasite and flee infested, it'd be cruel to just leave him out to rot! With invigorated commitment to this dog he remembered something, parasites! He might have some, "I gotta get him some parasite meds, do they have side effects? Will it injure him if he takes them without having the bug, maybe I can call a vet here, but they're so expensive, and they won't even be able to touch him without him biting the shit out of everything". Tired and worried, he browsed the web about parasite med side-effects, he found some online that seemed fine and bought some, and while he was there he scrolled the apartment resident ask board, it's basically just people lending out almost bad food to those who don't have very much, a couple asks to help move or build furniture, a couple asks for someone to room with, and- wait? Some guy asked to room with someone else for 20 dollars a week, poor man, POOR man, guy must be real down on his luck, eesh, 'can sleep on the floor, in a closet, or on a chair, will be fine just sleeping there and keeping his backpack in the apartment', danny thinks for a second, he's not got much to steal, he fazed his wallet into a table leg, it sounds like a bit of a hassle, 'hmmmmmmm', danny decided he'll sleep on it and goes back to caring for his little guy, he got the little pupper some treats, it looks like he loved them, the little pupper's tail was wagging, and he let out one of his half barks, something must have injured his throat, poor banged up little guy, how does a dog so young get this beat up, was he part of an underground brawl ring? ... Actually that would explain a lot. Huh, maybe he'll check around the place for that, shelving that idea for later Danny starts on the chores, cleaning Hagrid's little stable,( he called the puppy hagrid ), doing his own dishes from the night before, cooking, feeding the lil scamp, laundry, updating the planetarium website and adding his ad project to the ad file, wiping down the table, repowdering the little guys pen.

Danny ends up sleeping early, he's especially tired today, maybe the hagrid maintenance is catching up to him 'hehe, hagrid'

Danny always wanted a dog. Cujo was great, but he wasn't always there. Cujo was far too free spirited to be held down by being a pet. So Danny decides to take in a stray.

Then SOMEHOW he ends up with the most rabid, bacteria infected canine he's ever met, and he absolutely ADORES his new puppy. He also forgets about vaccinations and vet visits.

In Danny's defense! The puppy was fine and so was he, what with his unique ghost physiology, and that would've been fine — if he didn't have a roommate that was a human who COULD contract diseases from Danny's cute little friend.

Meanwhile, Jason, who was NOT expecting someone to actually take up his residency offer, now has to play roommates with this kid and his dog. He's pretty sure the pup has several diseases just waiting to pounce on him.

Chamomile {Part I}

Eda and Amity share a cup of tea.

If she could just bring herself to it, she would have been able touch her. The human’s hand laid with its palm up, fingers slightly apart, had Amity Blight been a more reckless, a more selfish person she would have read an invitation there. But the fact was that she wasn’t brazen, or at least not when it came to her paramour. The very opposite was more likely to be the case. And she wasn’t as invasive or disrespectful as to spoil Luz’s peace. She knew well enough how this could feel, and she wouldn’t dream of making her experience that. The human’s peaceful sleeping face, a small smile on her lips, the slow rhythmic sound of her breath, the fact she had fallen asleep facing her, those were signs of trust. An undeserved gift Amity Blight wasn’t willing to abuse. Those were the thoughts repeating in her mind: the sanctity of Luz’s peace and her own unwillingness, due to her own principles, to corrupt that. Principles whose origins she didn’t know for certain.

Truth be told, it wasn’t her undeniable attraction for Luz keeping sleep away from her, however. It was this vulnerability, this unwarranted confidence the girl deposited in Amity Blight, that she could allow herself to be in such position around her despite the long list of evidences to the contrary the witchling could think of. That’s what was bothering her. She wanted to see herself worthy of such trust, but scour her mind as she might, nothing could explain to her Luz’s abandonment. It wasn’t as though they kept with the antagonism of their early interactions, things had changed, for the better. Or so Amity Blight wanted to believe, hoping Luz would agree. Nevertheless, it was far too soon for her to be deserving of any of this from the human.

She shifted her position, laying flat on her back now. The wooden ceiling sure could provide some welcomed distraction. She counted the boards, she lost track of time as she mapped the large veins on each of them, as she often liked to when she was given the chance. Her parents’ taste for pristine white marble made sure this rarely was the case however. Her home was so different from this place, like comparing a cottage to a hermetically clean hospital, sterile. The flawlessness of her homestead’s ever so pristine couth, which had been passed down from so many generations, was all she had known thus far. The owl house was well kept, to the limited extent of what Edalyn Clawthorne, King and now Luz could manage. Still, the choice words for her parents to describe the place would would surely be along the lines of revolting or filthy. This would always be more than enough for them to form an unshakable opinion on the denizens. She owed Skara one, if not for her, today would not have been possible, circumstances would not have allowed it to be possible. She now knew what the word cozy meant, it had always sounded so abstract to her.

But try as she might to distract herself, think idle thoughts about her parents, Skara, and generalities of distinct living conditions, Luz’s sweet, almond like smell made those be futile efforts at best, counterproductive at worst. No witch she knew smelled like that. But then again, most witches in her social circle were avid users of colognes, perfumes, or really anything that can mask the natural scent of their bodies. Amity Blight used to think this was a flattering character of her fellow upper-crust, this earthly scent however, so grounded as to be naive, begged to differ. Luz never showed such frugal concerns, and despite often making those unsettling jokes about quitting basic hygiene, she not once saw the girl dirty. Going the distance of using perfume, however, sounded like it would be a foreign concept to the human. Amity Blight couldn’t really tell whether or not this smell was a human thing or if witches also had such scents. But this was Luz’s smell, that’s all she needed to know.

She tried to lead her thoughts elsewhere, but still they circled back to the unavoidable distraction to her side. She won’t get any sleep if things stay like this, and Luz had plans for the two of them in the morning. She needed some air, the most delicious scent she could think becoming unbearable,  some time outside this room to get her thoughts in order. Sitting up, looking to her side  she can’t help a smile of her own at Luz’s content face. She shoos the thought that she could, perhaps be dreaming of her, that she could be the cause of that contentment. If Luz could unknowingly keep Amity Blight’s brazeness at bay, she could do the same to her learned inclinations for pretension. This wasn’t enough to keep her, mostly unbidden, hand from towards Luz. But she wouldn’t take the risk, she was unsure whether she could afford such mistake, because that’s what this would be.

Ruling against that action, she reaches further, picking up the small notebook and Luz’s favorite pen that laid beside it. It seemed as though the light spell Luz casted earlier - by Amity’s request - worked as a candle, dimming as time went on. She was never a fan of sleeping in the dark, and her own purple light spells only brought back the memories of Ed and Em asking, no, demanding, to know why they weren’t invited to the night club. Luz had been  kind enough as to give her that, she even taught her the exact design one should make in order to cast light in that fashion. Thinking of that brought a thought to Amity. It was auspicious, to say the least, that the girl’s first self taught spell was a light spell. Hadn’t she told her once that in her mother’s language Luz meant light? She smiled, the name  simply made too much sense in every conceivable way. Safe for Bellos, and likely Boscha, that was bound to be an unanimous opinion among all inhabitants of the Boiling Isles that had met the human. Amity Blight gave out a wee smile at the thought, her bias on that opinion too large for her to say whether or not it was true, but she would stubbornly hold on to that belief nonetheless. She didn’t want to question why she had been allowed to be under this light, not now. Point stands, nonetheless, Amity Blight knew what she had done both to Luz herself as well as some of those the human held the closest to her heart. Those displays of kindness, or even endearment, those are what Amity Blight would never understand: both a sign of praiseworthy courage and of a reckless abandonment a Blight couldn’t help but to chastise. And Titan as her witness, had she done enough chastisement of Luz in the past. But the thought of Luz’s desire for being close to her made her certain she wouldn’t see her usual pale complexion should she look into a mirror. Luckily, there was none there to witness her giving in to her feelings.

She drew the glyph and sure enough a small orb of light materialized, consuming the sheet of paper. To her utter surprise, it had the same color as Luz’s. She drew a second one, standing up before casting it. As quietly as she could despite the creak of the floor boards she made her way to the kitchen. The owl house, although fairly large for the four living in it - five if one counts that abhorrent screechy creature with no sense of personal space as a person - had a pretty straight forward layout. It had taken Amity Blight but one quick visit to be able to navigate the place with her eyes closed if she wanted, but the scattered random objects Edalyn Clawthorne, the matriarch, had collected over the years stopped her from such attempt. Despite living there her whole life, she couldn’t claim the same familiarity with her family’s ancestral manor. She wondered how she would feel tomorrow  night, sleeping there again.

The kitchen, as simple as the rest of the house, was deserted. She had insisted on helping Luz clean it up after dinner, her ineptitude at basic chores earning Luz’s laughter and a few basic lessons. She could now almost be considered an expert at doing the dishes, probably the first Blight to ever reach that. She knew were the glasses were, that was all she needed. Fetching a glass she makes her way to the fridge, hoping to find that cold bottle of water she saw earlier.

“Trouble sleeping, Blight?”

A tall figure, still wearing her carmine dress, stood leaning herself on the backdoor’s threshold, an amicable expression, although suggesting there was still a large bridgeless river between them, on her face, her arms crossed.  She had been silent enough to almost give Amity a heart attack, Edalyn only laughed. Dropping the large cloth bag next to the door.

“Ms. Clawthorne. Uhh… Yes, a little. You too?”  

“Well, the fact that I every now and then become one is not the only reason why people call me the Owl Lady. I also have really, really bad insomnia. When its especially bad, like tonight, I just go run a few… errands. But enough about that. Thought you’d sleep like a brick after Luz dragged you all over the whole day. So, my humble abode’s accommodations are not up to standard or...”

“N-No, Ms. Cla-Clawthorne. Everything is perfect. I just have a… I have insomnia too, sometimes. So, yeah… That’s it.”

The older witch furrowed her eyebrows, Amity Blight knew that look. She was being studied. But her inelegant response had been simply unavoidable, a knee jerk reaction beyond her control. It was true however, sleep often evaded the girl, but the heat rising to her cheeks denounced that this night the cause was other than usually. The difference in their postures and clothing was enough to make the Blight want to burrow herself in hole. Edalyn, in a well worn dress red in color – which highly complimented the gray tone of her hair, the white of her skin, and more importantly her heterochromatic eyes, the yellow jewelry matching her left honey colored eye, the original color for both of the, this was her biggest battle scar – looked, in her usual manner, ready for whatever these Isles could have in store for her. Amity Blight, on the other hand, with her hair loose from her usual small ponytail, a few strands falling in front of both her eyes hiding the amber beneath, wearing well tailored, thought loosely fitting and thick pajamas as to afford as much comfort as possible to her sleep in a chilly night as this one, looked as off guard as one possibly could. Her upper class origin could, at times, be rather inconvenient.

“Anyway… Tea? Figure it can help you get at least some shut eye. According to Luz’s incessant rambling this last couple of days it seems you have a busy day ahead of you tomorrow and you will need at least some rest.”

“Y-yes. Tea would be lovely, m-ma’am.”

She worried the blush would show in the dim light. The name of Luz, in the girl’s mentor’s voice, again making Amity Blight’s emotions take the forefront. She attempted to speak as little as possible. Seeing how Edalyn was still studying her, this option seemed to grow distant by the instant. The suggestion of a smirk in the Owl Lady’s lips.

“Hope you like chamomile then, cause that’s all we have. Is that alright with you?”

“That’s my favorite actually, thanks. Em will always brew it for me and Ed  when there’s a Boiling storm.”

“Em? That’s your sister right? Emerald, wasn’t it?”

The Clawthorne asked, as she filled a kettle with water.

“Emira, actually.”

“Dangit, I owe Lily 5 snails. We had this bet, back at school, you know. When we saw things between Al and Odalia were getting serious. I said Odalia’s first born daughter would be called Emerald, seemed right up her alley. I mean, because of the green and all, but mostly because… No offense, but she always had a bit of a gaudy taste. You should see her looks at grom, she had so much jewelry on her that you could probably buy a house with it, even if you sold it to the lowest bidder, and so much fabric in her dress that you could build a tent big enough to fit all of Bonesburough under it.”

Amity Blight couldn’t contain a small chuckle, much to Edalyn’s surprise. The owl lady raised her eyebrows expecting clarification from the Blight.

“Well, you’re not too far off. I heard that was the second pick.”

“Huh, was it Al who didn’t let the three of you have weird names, or did she get suddenly struck with common sense? Well, in any case, you seem to have more taste than her. Also, will you just have a sit already, Blight? Seriously, you’re lucky you’re not called Diamond or some thing like that, Blight.”

Amity Blight winced at how Edalyn addressed her. From someone as close to Luz as Edalyn, there was only one way Amity Blight wanted to be called.

“That part I don’t really know, it was Em herself who told me she almost was called that. And, please, just call me Amity.”

Edalyn, making her own way to the table, just looked at the girl. Amity felt as though she was still studying her, but so far she wanted to think she had made a good enough impression. She placed the pen and notebook on the table, to which Edalyn promptly picked it up, drawing a light glyph of her own almost as fast as Luz would, Amity couldn’t tell whether or not she had so much as looked at the paper as she drew it. The water on the kettle beginning to heat.

“Sure, as long as you start calling me Eda. No Ms. Clawthorne, no ma’ams, and specially no Owl Ladies. My name is Eda, just Eda. I don’t really do formality or legends well. Just ask Bump.”

She extends her hand towards Amity.

“Deal.”

Amity responded Eda’s gesture in kind. The agreement sealed with a firm handshake.

“Now, I still have to ask you. Why exactly you don’t want to be called Blight? Its a powerful name, all Blights I ever met seemed pretty proud of it, even when we were negotiating some back alley deal. You all seem to always try to do everything you can to remind everyone around you how much of a Blight you are. This is a first for me, I got to say.”

“I… That’s complicated. I don’t really know how to put it into words.”

“You should try it sometime though. But, in any case, we can always come back to this later. For now however, I hear you are pretty good with abominations, how’s that working out for you?”

Amity couldn’t be more grateful for Eda’s obvious option for small talk. For someone who said not to be good with formalities, her capacity of catching up on those queues was impressive. She couldn’t help her surprise to learn that on her Hexside days she attended the potions track instead of oracle. But that first part sounded to her more like a promise than a suggestion.

As the water slowly began to boil, they talked. Eda would every now and then drop a few anecdotes about Amity’s mother. Progressively derogatory ones at that. The girl was starting  to feel skeptic as to the honesty of her ever present “no offense” claims. It was a welcomed thing though,  she was not about to stop Eda’s mockery. However, the woman seemed to grow interested in one particular topic, one Amity was much less excited about.

“So, you have those light brown roots. You plan on dying it anytime soon? Just curious, because honestly as it is, you look like you have some kind of plant in your hair. Like, green leafs atop the the brown bark and all.”

She took some time answering, despite Eda’s friendly demeanor. As a matter of fact, that too was confusing her. Much like with Luz, she couldn’t understand why she of all people wouldn’t be keeping her at an arms length. Either way, she didn’t know where exactly Eda planned on taking this conversation, which Amity had been truly enjoying, just like that curiosity took over.

“Yeah. Mother has been insistent about it for a couple weeks. I kind of like it this way, though. I don’t know, does it really look that bad?”

“No, not at all. I made fun of it, but I don’t really think you need to change it… if you don’t want to, that is. But… Well, I have a feeling we’ll get to it eventually.”

Amity noticed some hesitation in Eda’s voice. She said those words slower than her normal pace, lower than her normal pitch, uncharacteristically tentative. Moreover, Eda’s words made the girl certain this conversation would be much longer than she had anticipated when she first saw Eda standing by the door frame.

“Thanks. But, any day now Mother will come home with that bottle green dye, and then she’ll summon me to her quarters, and then she’ll dye it. And then that will be it.”

“Wait. Odalia dyes your hair herself?” Seeing Amity’s curt nod, Eda completed. “Interesting… It both sounds exactly like the Odalia I knew and nothing like her.” She lingered in the last syllable, as if still processing the information.

Opportunistically, the kettle started screaming announcing the water had boiled. Amity started getting up, to help Eda with it who in turn raised her hand, prompting the girl to stop in her tracks.

“Nope, you’re still the guest here. Looks like you’ll be coming here more often, maybe then I’ll let you help me with this stuff. For now, I’ll be playing the role of the gracious host.”

Amity sat back down, quietly watching as Eda went about picking all the supplies needed. The herbs had already been sitting by the stove, so her first action had been to pour some of it into the water. She thought of Emira’s method, she could swear that should be done midway through the boiling. She saw Eda look towards the cabinet were they kept the tea cups, a small circular motion with her left index finger. And, of course, the frustrated moan was soon followed by the clanking sound of porcelain as Eda picked the teacups with her hands.

“Sugar?”

“Yes, please. A couple of spoons.”

Soon the two were back siting across from each other, waiting for the tea to cool down enough not to give them third degree burns.

“Thank you, Eda.”

“Eh, don’t mention it. I was going to make it for myself anyway.” A playful, even if laced with some poorly hidden malice, grin on her face, Eda continued. “Say, you mentioned earlier that this was your favorite kind of tea, is that right?”

“It sure is. Why?”

“Oh nothing, its just that… Personally, I’m more of an Earl Gray kind of gal. You know, I like with a bit more of a punch, you know? But not too much, especially at an hour like this. Working for five years alone in a basement does something to a person's psyche, and even more so when the people you're constantly surrounded by have been dead for more than a few days. As in, they twitched, gassed, and sometimes even breathed, but most of them had either their brain bashed in, or worse, no head at all, to comment on how her hair was always pulled with a broken pen, how her makeup became horribly smudged after working thirty hours straight, how sometimes she smelt like a mix of formaldehyde, Chinese food and other people's BO after long nights. Now she had to interact with people. Gross, disgusting, breathing human beings.

"It won't be that bad," Dr. James Wilson reassured her, handing Kylan a manila folder of paperwork she had yet to fill out. About three inches thick of stapled books and contracts she'd barely graze through, and she stuck it right underneath her arm with the other packs of paper and a mass amount of protocol packets she's received since she entered the doors that morning. The hospital must have chopped down a new tree just for her paperwork alone, how many forests rested on her new desk?

"Won't be that bad," Kylan scoffed, rolling her eyes, "didn't you say that about medical school before I applied?"

James pressed one of the elevator buttons, downwards to Kylan's new and improved basement, and chuckled to himself. It was hard not to. She seemed to still be pissed about not getting the full hardened truth of how awful and tedious medical school really was, instead, James had dazzled his story with a flat-out hopeful lie while she still attended Columbia University without him.  Kylan had such childish eyes back then. Like honey drizzled in coffee.

"If I remember correctly, I said it was like normal classes." And a smile spread on his pretty-boy features, diverting his attention from Kylan enough to make his point, "what I didn't tell you was the classes were all set on fire and you had only oil to put them out."

The elevator doors opened briefly and fast enough before Kylan could stab in another remark about her undergrad years. A few nurses dressed in colorful scrubs stepped out, and James and Kylan stepped in to replace them just as quickly.

"Any reason why the hospital is so busy?" She asked, pressing the button to the last level. Her curiosity seemed to be getting the better of her. She usually wouldn't have pried, but with James, she allowed it to slide. "Any epidemics I should be worried about?"

"It's always like this."

"Always?"

A shiver ran down her spine. Hospitals were never her favorite, in fact, she resented them with every fiber in her being. Everything about modern medicine caused her skin to crawl in a million different ways, the smells, the touch, the needles. She could sew up a body, chop it up, pull out their organs no problem, but it usually took three weeks of procrastination and a few sedatives just to get through a simple flu shot.

Watching a thirty-seven-year-old woman sniffling with her lips quivering, wet eyes and swollen cheeks just over a simple flu shot were deemed as downright embarrassing in her eyes, even more so if it was her young coworkers doing the job.

Kylan took a deep sigh as the elevator dinged at their arrival. Most of the hospitals Kylan had visited usually had empty basements, this one was no different. The lights were the usual bright LSD types, overhanging cement walls, cold air and an aura that reeked of old death. The morgue hadn't smelt of new corpses just yet, but it soon would be. Most nurses and doctors wouldn't dare come down to investigate the spooky sounds emitting from down below past the morgue.

He seemed to be both embarrassed and angry, and on the brink of hyperventilating just by thinking about it.

"You are not to tell anyone about that." he cautioned, causing Kylan to laugh even harder.

"So uptight."

"I'm warning you, I have people upstairs that will use that to their advantage, and I don't need them knowing."

Kylan's eyebrow cocked, "I thought you said everyone here was your friend?"

"They are." And with her now silent, he seemed to be on the verge of either breaking out more information or keeping it to himself. But the way she stood, her eyes squinting, her arms crossed over her chest and waiting, he had no choice. He had to explain now, or she'd find some unorthodox way of getting the information herself. Sounded awfully familiar. "Okay, some of them may not be my best friends, but there are some that like to make my life miserable."

"Miserable how?"

Wilson's beeper blew off before he said anything, and for a moment he seemed hesitant to even take it seriously.

"Listen, I have to go back upstairs, think you can settle in yourself for a minute?" He asked, "this shouldn't be very long."

"Of course."

He gestured down the hall, pointing to one of the wooden doors on the left, "go through there. Your office is right next to the main morgue, so you shouldn't have too many difficulties finding it. If you need any help you can come back upstairs and ask for me or Cuddy."

She nodded, and Wilson zipped back down the hallways and back to the elevator. For a second, she didn't move. The hospital basement was too quiet now, and the taps of her heels echoed in a way she did not like. There were chairs sitting outside doorways, for reasons unknown, and the light down the hall seemed to be flickering.

Kylan liked dead bodies, but she didn't like the idea of working in a hospital that may or may not be haunted. If she heard something move or a weird voice echoing in the night, she was going to quit. Right then and there, no questions asked. Didn't matter if they were willing to pay a few million dollars for her to stay, being haunted was not worth it.

But luckily she hadn't heard anything yet, so Kylan graciously took the time to skedaddle her way into the room.

Just as Wilson had said, her new office was hidden in the back. Warm air hit her face momentarily, and the smell of something sweet caused her to sneeze as she took a glance around. It seemed the Hospital Interior Designer didn't leave even her new office out of the budget.

She had a new coat rack where she could hang her scarves and coats in the winter, and a hook for her lab coats when she had the time to bring them in from her old space. She'd need to get the rest of her medical supplies from her house too, and she'd be all settled in, as she had always been wanting.

It was better than her old office at the county police station that was for sure She had a desk there, and shelves just like the ones presented to her now, but much smaller, and basically the room itself was about the size of a coat closet. It would get too hot in the summers, too cold in the winter, it felt like a meat locker half the time and she had to wear some sort of winter coat and finger less gloves just to do paperwork without shivering.

This was a much better improvement.

Before Kylan could even start going through the paperwork, a strange noise in the back caused her skin to crawl with goosebumps. For a moment she had figured it to be the strong winds she had experienced in the parking lot, but another shuffling caused her logical thoughts to scurry away just as quick. Her office had giant windows showcasing the first part of the morgue, but from what she could tell no lights were on, and there was definitely no one coming from the hall. She would have heard the footsteps on the concrete floors or even the ding of the elevator. This was much different, and it caused her spine to shiver.

Kylan hesitated on going anywhere near the windows. Wilson would have mentioned something about animals sneaking in, right? Or even mention if anyone else would be wondering the morgue, cleaners, nurses, someone. But she doubted someone would even go into the main laboratory, and doing so in the dark was downright stupid. There were thousands of dollars of sharp knives, saws, needles and equipment that no ordinary person could just get their hands on, and one wrong move those things would cause some serious damage. She kept her eyes locked at the windows, waiting for something to emerge. But nothing came out it, and another loud bang caused her skin to jump right off her bones.

Against her better judgment, Kylan slowly walked forward. Waiting for a dead person to smack against the window, bloody and oozing like those horror movies her brother loved so much. But even in her wildest imagination, she had doubted something like that would ever happen, so she kept close to the wall trying to find the damn light switch to the morgue. Maybe if it was a raccoon or a rat, the light would scare them off. Give her enough time to warn staff on an infestation of rodents and they could come and clean it quick. God, even the thought of having a few rats where dead bodies would be sitting caused her stomach to churn.

Kylan fiddled with the light switch until a flood of artificial flood lamps lit the room. It seemed the first part of the morgue was clean, untouched, the tools hanging off nails and boards, steel glimmering in the light. Sinks seemed to be unused, aprons and refrigerators sat in corners, and a scale polished and ready for use on the main table. Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary, but this was only the first part. The secondary part of the morgue was something she wasn't ready for. The place where they shoved the bodies in those metal crates screwed on the wall, where tags hung from people's blue toes and made gross noises as gas began to be let out of their orifices. But Wilson would have mentioned bodies already dressed down on the slabs. The place was brand new, cleaned just for Kylan. There was no way there were already bodies taking up space on the cold tables.

Another shuffle caused her to nerves to spike, and again, she almost wanted to follow her better instincts and run back upstairs where someone could investigate for her. Hell, as much as she knew Wilson hated ghosts and anything spooky, she would feel better if he was standing behind her in case something bad happened. What would happen if a crazed raccoon bit her on the arm? Or worse, a crazy patient who escaped from the psych ward. All those tools were nice weapons if they needed to be, and Kylan certainly didn't like the idea of someone wielding them against her.

Kylan carefully pitter-pattered to the next light switch, hoping to whoever controlled the heavens to just be a few dead bodies rotting in the cold. Her fingers slid against the chilly tile, and her fingers slid against the plastic switch, she flipped it on.

Nothing.

Not a god damn thing.

She let out a deep breath Kylan wasn't aware she had been holding. Her chest hurt now. Like her heart had just pumped enough blood and adrenaline to run a ten mile marathon. Twice. She laughed at herself on how ridiculous she had been acting. She could only imagine how Wilson would look when she'd tell him the thoughts she had over some old piping or some bullshit like that. Just as she flicked the light back off, she turned, and collided with a mass of fabric.

"Jesus Christ!" She yelled, slamming into the man who scared the crap out of her.

His aftershave permeated her nose for a second, like spice, and she staggard back, trying to put as much distance as she could between the two of them. Which wasn't much, since she had hit the back of the autopsy table, moving it an inch or two causing a loud skid to cover the heavy breathing. Her hands leaned on the sides, and she tried to not to let her nerves get the better of her.

"What the hell are you doing in there?" She finally asked the moment she could break out a few words. The room was barely lit from the other room's light, but she could definitely tell it was a man from the way his shoulders were shaped, the clothing, the smell still stuck in her nostrils. "What the fuck are you doing here in the dark?"

She seemed more surprised than angry. Sure someone was sticking their nose in her new toys, but that didn't mean she cared enough to get a little angry. Maybe a signal or a word or two could have stopped her from wanting to rip off his balls for scaring her like that. Who in their right mind just snooped around a morgue touching things that didn't belong to them?

The light flickered back on, and the bright light caused her eyes to hurt from the sudden adjustment.

The man kept silent, moving past her with a clear and visual limp. For a second she thought she might have kneed him somewhere, but the looks of a cane resting on the cabinet counter across from her, she doubted she injured him. At least, not enough to cause anything like that.

"I sometimes kept pills down here, I'm guessing someone hid them or threw them away."  He finally said, and Kylan couldn't help but get a little irritated at his condescending tone.

"You kept pills in a morgue?" She spit.

"I'm sure you keep pills in cupboards too."

"Not in a morgue."

Kylan would have been freaked out on coming face-to-face with a man so suddenly, especially in the dark and in a room by herself. But she bet herself that if the time came, all she'd have to do was kick him in his bad leg and take off. No immediate amount of danger that screamed red at her, at least, from what she could tell.

He was a taller man, much older than her by ten years from the indication of his peppered hair, he seem withered in the face, wrinkles near his eyes, a much older demeanor overall in his appearance. His limp added to the age, but his clothing, loose and almost ill fitting, made Kylan second-guess herself.

"Who are you? How'd you even get access to the basement, you need a key-card." Kylan said matter-of-fact. her breathing steady finally, and now she wanted actual answers. She didn't doubt he was an actual doctor, but she would be damn well surprised if he was.

As if he thought it was a stupid question, he grabbed a plastic ID card much like hers from his jacket pocket, shoved it close to her nose, and pulled it away like three seconds staring at a white piece of glistening words would give Kylan all the information she needed. But she did get one thing.

A name.

Dr. Gregory House.

Well I'll be damned. She thought. This guy is a damn doctor.

CHAPTER ONE

Brian May x Reader College AU

Summary: First time for anything is usually hard, so when you start your first year of undergrad, you begin to second guess your decisions. What may seem to be a tiny nerdy club to get your mind off of the stresses brough to you by your major, might soon transform into something more meaningful in the long run.

Warnings: Nothing bad in this chapter, cheek blushing, akwardsness, that it! No smut or angst... yet!

Author’s Note: I am terribly sorry if this seems like a boring, textual chapter. I felt the need to explain everything as thoroughly as possible in order to understand the context of everything. Future chapters won’t have lengthy, boring starts like this one! But, nervertheless, I still hope you enjoy this first chapter!

Trying to mind your own business while walking down the sidewalk, multiple shoulders continued to brush your own as you made your way down the busy London street. You had recently moved to the lively area of Kensington to pursue the next step in your life- completing your undergraduate degree. 

Renting a small loft located on the outskirts of the heart of London city, you decided it would be best to live closer to the place you would be spending majority of your time throughout the months to come. Being your first year starting university, a unviersity filled with people you had never met, located in an area you hadn’t grown up in, you knew living in the area would save you the additional first year stress of commuting.

With a sticky note in hand, you had written down your destination prior to leaving your apartment knowing you would most likely get lost without it; and of course, you were right. Your vision was exchanging between your note and the street signs attempting to find the location of the university itself. 

Bringing a hand up to readjust the sunglasses perched on your nose, you continued on your journey down the sidewalk until letters spelling out Imperial College London filled your peripherals assuring you that you were so far walking in the correct direction. Breathing out a dramatic sigh of relief, you mentally prepared yourself for finding the next location, the location that happened to be the destination of your first lecture.

With what took only a few left and rights, you arrived at the front doors of the building where your Intro to Biology lecture would be held. Yes, you were evidently about to major in Biological Sciences. Taking one last glance at your note to memorize the number of the lecture hall, you shoved the piece of paper into your pocket upon embarking into the large brick building. 

You found yourself mesmerized at the many posters plastered across the walls, advertising for the various clubs and events located on the campus. To be quite frank, your nerves were bubbling inside of you as you started to question whether going to post-secondary was the right step for you. I mean, what student doesn’t second guess their educational choices?

With your nerves subsiding within, you found yourself walking into your first lecture hall lined, or should I say crammed, with over a hundred seats and tiny desks. It was pretty intimidating. With desks already occupied with students, you decided to pick a seat near the back corner of the room in hopes of avoiding interaction with the others who were enrolled in the class. It was only your first day, and although making friends seemed to be a go-to idea, it wasn’t exactly your main priority.

Getting out a few pens and a notepad with a few minutes to spare, you tapped your foot anxiously against the floor as you watched the class fill up. With nearly every seat occupied, class soon began right on time. 

Even though the professor was only going over the syllabus and not the hard-core material, you found yourself zoning in and out of attention, something surely other kids were doing. After what felt like an eternity but more realistically around an hour, the professor bid the class farewell till the following week and let you free.

Packing your stuff while making slight glances to the people situated around you, you mentally cursed at yourself for being too socially awkward and too shy, which ultimately  hindered the starting of conversations. Walking out of the hall, intro to biologywas your only class that day meaning you would most likely be on your way back to your loft.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, you stopped yourself as a particular poster taped to the hallway wall grabbed your attention. Referring to a club dealing with astronomy, inviting those majoring and not majoring in physics. You were quick to pull out a pen from your material carrier bag alongside your crumpled sticky note that you had previously shoved into your pocket to drought down the place and time of meeting. 

The topic of astronomy had always seemed to fascinate you, and not having room in your course schedule for electives dealing with astronomical related matter meant joining a club would be in your best interest.

With the first club meeting taking place that night, you continued on your walk back to your flat where you proceeded to take a power nap and cook yourself a quick dinner. Sorting through your clothes, an audible string of shit’sand hurry upcame out of your mouth repeatedly as your frantically rushed around your room looking for something to wear. You could not, I stress could not, be late to the first meeting.

Yeah, you could've just worn what you were wearing earlier that day, but, you wanted to look a touch more presentable knowing that you would be having no choice but to interact with the other goers of the club. Slipping on a pair of jeans paired with a collared shirt that popped out from under a knit shirt, you once again were back to walking down the London sidewalks with the same note in hand. Only this time, the streets weren’t as crowded with pedestrians compared to the morning due to it being a later time in the evening.

Finding the building at a quicker pace then your first lecture, most likely a factor of not many students creating a hassle around the campus, you braced yourself as you stood in front of the door to the club meeting destination. Once again, you found yourself second-guessing your decisions. Was it really a smart idea to join a club dealing with a subject you weren’t solely studying?

As your mind juggled between the opportunities of making friends with the juxtaposing idea of possible humiliation, you were taken out of your thoughts when a soft tap was felt on your shoulder.

“Will you be going in?”

The question was soft yet mixed with slight confusion.

Noticing you were standing in front of the door and blocking the entrance for others, you quickly reached out your hand to grab the door knob, turning your head to get a brief view of the person.

“Sorry.”

That was all you managed to get out, opening the door before walking away quickly to avoid any response from the person. With this being a smaller room compared to your lecture hall, a few desks and chairs were scattered around, facing a black board that was mounted at the front of the room.

Taking a seat at the back of the less intimidating room, you placed your bag on the floor beside you as you rested your elbows on the desk, scoping out the room. There were around fifteen students, including yourself, looking eager as ever to participate in whatever this club had to offer.

The walls, similar to the ones in the hallways, were filled with posters strictly relating to astronomy, picturing different diagrams and layouts of the solar system, milky way, you name it.

“Alright,” a familiar soft voice filled the room at a volume raised just enough for everyone to distinctly hear.

Drawing your attention towards the front of the class, you found yourself eyeing the person that you had minutes before made conversation with, if that could even be classified as a conversation. Giving a slight clear of his throat, he continued.

“Welcome, and I guess thank you for dropping in to today’s first club meeting,” the man spoke with a small smile spread across his face while his hands were held in front of him, fiddling with his fingers.

Taking in the boy’s presence, you couldn't help yourself but aimlessly graze your eyes over his lanky figure. Maybe this club wasn’t going to be as bad as you thought.

“If you were unaware, which I’m sure you guys aren’t,” he said with brief chuckle, earning small giggles from the few students scattered around the room, “we are going to be discussing things in relation to astronomy.” With that, he gestured to the posters covering the walls of the room. The posters that gave the room much more life.  

As he continued to talk, the boy would switch between slight swaying of his body, to quiet finger tapping on the desk closest to him, as he explained the various activities and mini field trips the club would engage in. Taking only twenty minutes to do so, you were more intrigued with what the club had to offer than your mandatory biology course that morning.

“Being a student like you guys, only in my second year of majoring in physics, I am going to make this as fun and interesting as possible,” the boys said with a nod at the end of his sentence, almost as if he were reassuring himself.

“Any questions?”

With a few students asking questions pertaining to missing club meetings and confirming the date of certain events the boy had already planned, you decided it would be better to just listen in and save questions, if any were to arise, for later on during the term.

“Before you guys leave,” the boy spoke after answering the student questions, “if you wouldn’t mind writing a tiny paragraph about what you hope to learn from this club, that would be great.”

He gave a few lose leaf pages of lined paper and a tiny box of pencils to a student sitting at the front of the class, telling them to take one of each and pass them around in case anyone forgot their writing materials.

“Be sure to write your name at the top of the paper along with your major and year just so I get to know you all better.”

With the hint of nervousness lacing his tone, you were getting the feeling this may have been his first time instructing a club as such.

“If you’ve decided, after my short spiel, that this club isn’t for you, no hard feelings but do feel free to leave without writing a reflection,” he spoke, smile failing to fall from his face. The boy did seem passionate about the this branch of physics.

Turning around to grab his own notepad and pencil from his bag, he started to write down his own notes.

“Oh, and not to forget,” he spoke, looking up from his piece of paper, “my name is Brian.”

After his final remarks, he left the students to work on a small reflection as he continued to stand at the front of the class, writing notes of the front pedestal. A few students trickled out without writing anything, most likely indicating that this wasn’t the club for them, though, that wasn’t the case for you.

Taking out your own notepad and a pen, you wrote your name at the top of the paper followed by a few lines of what you were excited to learn about during your time in the club. After a couple of minutes, you tore out the sheet from your notebook, putting your stuff in your bag, slinging it over your shoulder. Walking to the front of the class, you approached the so-called Brian, holding out your paper for him to take.

Looking up from his writing, he held his hand out to take the page from you, the smile that had been presented all class, now being presented to you personally “thank you… y/n,” said with a brief pause as he located your name on the sheet.

Giving him a smile and a small bob of the head as a substitute for ‘you’re welcome,’ you were about to turn away when his words stopped you.

“First year in biological sciences?” Brian questions, clearly already reading through your written response. He too was eager like the remained of the club.

“It is,” you nod, looking up to examine his face as his eyes scanned over your paper. He was sudden to look up from your writing to you.

“I’m taking a few entry level biology courses as my electives,” he acknowledges, placing your sheet down on the pile that was already accumulated from the other student responses, “maybe I’ll see you around!”

He was so soft-spoken that it made you gush inside, a burning heat rushing to your cheeks. Yes, this was only a simple gesture, a simple statement, but it gave you some hope that your first year could turn out to be enjoyable.

“For sure,” you try to contain yourself, refraining from tugging your lips into a smile wider than the one you were already showing, “have a good one, Brian.”

“You as well, y/n!”

Rapidly create your own capacitive multi-touch sensors with this kit

You likely use touchscreens every day when interacting with your phone — perhaps even to read this article — but prototyping your own capacitive matrix is unfortunately out of reach for most makers and electronics novices. As seen here, researchers have devised a new technique that will allow for easier prototyping of this type of interface, which can function on both flat and curved surfaces, over a variety of materials.

To accomplish this, the team developed an Arduino library, as well as one for Processing, and used OpenCV to track multiple finger positions. Interactions have been tested with an Uno, Mega and LilyPad, and would presumably work with almost any other Arduino board as needed!

We introduce Multi-Touch Kit, a low-cost do­ it-yourself technique to enable interaction designers, makers, and electronics novices alike to rapidly create and experiment with high-resolution multi-touch sensors of custom sizes, ge­ ometries, and materials. 

In contrast to existing solutions, the Multi-Touch Kit is the first technique that works with a commodity microcontroller (our implementation uses a standard Arduino) and does not require any specialized hardware. As a technical enabler, we contribute a modified multi-touch sensing scheme that lever­ ages the human body as a transmission channel of MHz range signals through a capacitive near-field coupling mechanism. This leads to a clean signal that can be readily processed with the Arduino’s built-in analog-to-digital converter, resulting in a sensing accuracy comparable to industrial multi-touch con­ trollers. Only a standard multiplexer and resistors are required alongside the Arduino to drive and read out a touch sensor matrix. 

The technique is versatile and compatible with many types of multi-touch sensor matrices, including flexible sensor films on paper or PET, sensors on textiles, and sensors on 3D printed objects. Furthermore, the technique is compatible with sensors of various scale, curvature, and electrode materials (silver, copper, conductive yarn) fabricated using conductive printing, hand-drawing with a conductive pen, cutting, or stitching.
