With backs facing each other, this is truly the furthest she has ever been from Toji. And while she's yearning for a warm and heavy arm to coil around her waist (the only way she knows to fall asleep), the residual anger from the fight after dinner stops her from moving any closer. The feeling has yet to dispel even two full hours of silence, none of this pair of lovers seem to be caving in just yet.

As great as a partner Toji is, he is still human and surely he'd say the same about her two. Two people do not have to be perfect to fall in love.

Tonight is an exemplar of the fact. Stubborn as mules, the two are, but still so suffocatingly in love with one another that there isn't a sleeping soul in the bedroom at the moment due to this foreign change in their nightly routine cuddles. Despite the comfortable blankets and fluffy pillows, the thermostat set just right and the muffled pitter patters of the night rainfall, none of them are able to fall asleep. An insomniac could be lulled right asleep tonight but she and Toji are both wide awake, yet pretending (and failing miserably) at falling asleep. Egos too proud and just as awake, screaming at the other, "I do not care that I cannot feel your breath right on my skin, that your warmth is the only thing that can calm my mind, that my heart is begging you to please give in and embrace me first."

45 minutes after they both had wordlessly gotten under the covers, grumpy expressions dressing their faces and tensions still as high as ever, she is still tossing and turning. And if not having her in his arms isn't enough to keep him awake, her body tossing and turning under the sheets every five minutes most definitely is. Paired with her quiet huffs of frustrations, Toji is more than well aware now that she hasn't gotten a blink of sleep either. They have five hours before the alarm goes off, and as the seconds continue to pass, it serves as a warning for these two with an eight hour workday tomorrow. Toji takes heed of this warning, yet his pettiness wins another battle of this tug of war.

She, however, has her patience running thin. As it grows thinner, her yearning grows stronger and she knows she's only a couple seconds before snapping... and she snaps ever so gently.

Toji has been unmoving, the complete opposite from her, so her pride makes the hopeful assumption that he has fallen fast asleep. Conflicted, she frowns as she lays on her back for the first tonight, her cheek pressed against the pillow to face him. How could he sleep so peacefully without holding her, yet she struggles wholeheartedly. He is so near, yet so far away.

Under the dim light, courtesy of the moon and stars peeking through the windows, her eyes map out every crevice of his back muscles. The longing only grows - she practically salivates at the familiar warmth she knows his body brings, how she wishes she could just wrap her arms and legs around him from behind like a koala, just like she always does on days when he's exhausted from a long day of work and all he wants is the warmth of her chest pressed against his back.

She struggles to make a decision between staying put and clinging onto him, her teeth chewing on her bottom lip as she deliberates. She then decides to find the balance between the two - simply hooking her pinky into the elastic of the back of his sweatpants. It isn't much, yet the tiny skinship from the area where their skin meet relaxes her tense shoulders immediately.

Toji takes the small win.

Grunting, he turns around to face her. In a flash, he turns her on her side and pulls her body flush against his. His arm is tight around her waist, and any other person would find it suffocating but ironically, she finds that it liberates her from distress. She only manages to get the first syllable of his name out in a yelp, before he hushes her.

"Sleep, ma. We'll fight tomorrow morning," the burly man speaks into her hair. He takes the opportunity to inhale her scent, and for a moment he inwardly scolds himself - he let his own stubbornness starve himself of this? He hears her huff, her body tense again (as if she hadn't been the one to initiate contact in the first place).

"Couldn't fall asleep with all the sheets rustling, just go to sleep so we both can get some rest," Toji grumbles, but he has a smirk hidden in her hair. As a final act of rebellion (or so she thinks), she meekly responds, "We'll fight tomorrow." Contrasting her words, she tries to impossibly move closer to him, savouring and gobbling up every last piece of him that she can get before their anticipated fight tomorrow, when she'll have to pretend that she doesn't want to kiss her anger to death against his lips -- and honestly, Toji just the same. And as if it still isn't enough (it isn't) she turns around swiftly to bury her nose into his neck. She finally lets out the breath she's been holding back.

His smirk grows, enjoying every piece of affection she is giving him right now. But truthfully, Toji is just as starved and it's evident when he pulls her arms to wrap around his torso, but not before he slips them underneath his shirt.. just like she always does, skinship prioritised.

With bellies finally satiated by mutual embrace and and the familiar scent of the other, they both yawn in unison, leaving them chuckling and giggling tiredly. "Not so angry anymore hm, mama?" He snickers, pushing his luck but immediately pressing a kiss to her head as if to soothe her anger from bubbling again.

"Shut up. We're still fighting tomorrow."

"Yes, we are. I still love you, though."

"I love you too, Toji."

Frank Langdon is a high functioning addict and pretty damn adept at what he's doing as long as everything is going 100% his way. He needs people on his side that see him as a good guy. He needs to see himself as a good guy. He wears a handmade bracelet that his kid made him to work - brightly coloured with his sleeves rolled up. He sits with David after a traumatic event and tells him that Robby was the best man for the job - within Robby's sight line. He wants to get his four year old the puppy he's been begging for - for his wife to deal with whilst raising both his kids as he's out of the house for 12 hour shifts. When he gets caught, he says c'mon Robby, remember how I helped my mother move all by myself? He's taking risks with his addiction, and he's getting cagey and paranoid about it when we meet him. He's jumping at everything as the season opens. He knows people will see him differently if they find out and he knows his career is at stake.

But he's still a good guy - as long as people believe this, they're all his character witnesses. Enter new residents and interns, and as luck will have it, he gets paired with a friendly, bubbly, eager to learn, genuinely happy to be here resident. Ain't that swell. Her desire to trust and build relationships with people that is the perfect canvas for Langdon to paint the best version of himself. So he's charming, he's kind to her, he gets to show off a little because he is a damn good doctor, and it FEELS damn good to be observed as such, especially by someone fresh who hasn't also clued in to the fact that he's an asshole too. He works his shift building up a mentor/student relationship with her. He's not doing this out of the kindness of his heart or because he likes her; Melissa King is a convenient part of Frank Langdon's ongoing plan of manipulation. Her competence means that none of his agitated snapping gets aimed her way (yet).

That's because he's reserving all that for Trinity Santos - the more jaded and less naive med student who recognizes how manipulative men behave. After all, it's a lot easier to never have to see an abrasive recent grad he's not able to intimidate after one day than it might be to never see a second year resident with experience again. He's playing the whole field here, because in his mind, everyone is on to him already. (and best believe he would have thrown Mel under the bus and dismissed and gaslit her too if she had been the one to piece his little secret together)

I wish some people didn’t try to make Patroclus ought to be like secretly a better warrior than everyone else because he already was a good warrior! There’s no shame in not being godly or not being as good as his comrades. But I found that there’s a trend in patrochilles fics of completely forgoing this idea in response to TSOA’s perception of him. And whilst that perception isn’t good at all believe me, you don’t have to hypermasculinize him either. He can be both a gentle man and a good warrior it’s not a mutually exclusive thing.

One thing I really like about Miside is that even though the player (Konoa, based on the default name) is mostly just a vessel for you (the real-world player) to inhabit, he still has a distinct personality — namely that he cares about the Mitas he comes across, and stands firm in his morals.

Crazy Mita calls him out during the repetitive dream sequence on lying to both himself and to her by denying that he wants to stay in the game. His normal life is boring and monotonous, and he hates it — she knows that he does. But he hates her so much more. It doesn't matter that she's offering him a perfect fantasy, because at the end of the day, she's crazy and she's hurting people. One of the responses you can pick in this section even directly calls her out on that: "The Mitas suffer; they don't want to be alone."

The player offering to be young Mita's friend, promising to come back to Mila, his outrage when Crazy Mita murders her, taking Kind Mita's hands after she respawns, his patience in playing along with the various Mitas and their need for games, for companionship...

Crazy Mita even tells him that it's her least favorite thing about him: how he "coddles those fakes," and implies that he's only doing it to try and win them over romantically, earlier saying, "How many more Mitas do you need to find before you settle down?"

I guess it makes sense that she can't understand kindness for the sake of kindness, rather than for a ulterior (usually romantic) motive — that's what she was programmed for, after all, but that's for a different post.

Anyway. I just appreciate that Konoa remains focused entirely on the goal of helping the Mitas and leaving. He never wavers or implies that he's thinking about staying. He never brings up the things that Crazy Mita has done to him, just what she's done to the other Mitas.

I guess what I'm saying is, I think he's interesting as a character in his own right, despite mostly being a self-insert.

I find the read that Luo Binghe is Airplane's self insert so weird because it ignores that that's not how self inserts work usually. Like a writer giving a character attributes similar to themselves is normal and inevitable. You can only draw from so many places and the easiest emotions and traits to write in are ones you are intimately familiar with. Like you can tell if a writer knows personally on a subject based off how they express and write details. Like I as a writer can't make characters tell jokes that are stylistically different from my own sense of humor because its so interpersonal and subjective. It's also a matter of how he sees and talks about Binghe as a complete separate character and a son rather than as a part of himself. Qinghua doesn't think or talk about Luo Binghe like they should be even considered on the exact same wavelength. So yeah, Qinghua probably does share some traits and elements with Binghe. They probably do share a braincell and a number of traits, but like this, all ignores that PIDW was a story written by a desperate author who had past failed works who realized people were actually reading this and needed to make money.

And when you stop and think about how PIDW is a very generic and standard in terms of what it does as a stallion novel doesn't it mean that Luo Binghe is less what Airplane would self insert as and more what he thinks is a marketable protagonist. Like Bingge specifically hits a bunch of classic tropes and elements with the only real defining thing being he's like a black hearted dude and Airplane was absolutely willing to pander to the masses.

What I'm saying is that Luo Binghe is what Qinghua thinks a basic bitch protagonist is. Luo Binghe is what Airplane considers generic wonderbread marketable.

And if you consider what you know and understand about harem novels and this genres tropes and bs nonsense doesn't it just make sense. Like of course he's not a gay man's self insert. He's a gay man's idea of what the basic bitch redditors like to see.

And like he did such a good job making a basic bitch he melted Shen Yuan's brain and made him obsessed and that's so funny. Your honor the man has no taste or sanity. He's truly unsalvalgabe and I love him so.

PGR has the perfect trap to get me invested in the story. Because I get very invested in characters that I like and play as. And I like the Commandant because I think they are written exceptionally well. But the Commandant is also a self-insert character. And I also really like the Gray Raven squad and their relatives.

And in more and more chapters the Commandant just has a bigger and bigger gameplay role. Not just a bigger role in the story, but there is more scenes from their perspective, and lately I even got to fight alongside my Constructs as their Commandant.

Its just a growing positive feedback loop for me.

He has icy blue eyes that will literally pierce your soul, sometimes on purpose and sometimes not. He tends to space out and scare people by unknowingly staring at them really hard. He also has very small pupils so he’s straight up scary sometimes.

He has a sleeper build, meaning he looks a lot less muscly than he actually is. He has a lean stomach muscles and if he flexes his arms you can very clearly see his muscles. He’s also very flexible and athletic, which explains his build. He also has a Medusa tattoo on his lower back (which he got without his parents permission)

Personality!

This guy is kind of complicated. He is a huge extrovert but has a very prominent resting bitch face, so people assume he’s just not interested in conversation. And, maybe he isn’t. Highly depends on his mood, which is never clear because, again, resting bitch face.

He’s an anxious extrovert, which means you often have to approach him first to actually get him talking. Once you’ve approached, he’s all chatter. But that doesn’t mean he’s very open about himself. For him to trust you for real? It takes at least two years minimum. He’s very distrustful but also very lonely, so he doesn’t want to be alone just because he can’t trust people.

he’s perspective and a great empath, great with words even if he doesn’t know the experience first hand. A very reliable guy when you need someone to talk to about your worries! Easy to get along with and very unlikely to get mad at someone, unless you cross his boundaries, which aren’t clear even to him.

He’s hard to intimidate but also very easy to startle. He tends to flinch at the slightest of movements and feels like he’s constantly being watched at all times, which is why you’ll usually find him anxiously looking around as if he’s on guard.

He tends to disassociate easily and has a hard time coming back into focus. Usually will stop breathing if he disassociates for too long, which has caused him to come too close to death too many times.

He’s an argumentative fella and will defend his point to the end. Is also very defensive of his friends and tends to be an enabler because of that, but that doesn’t mean he lets himself be manipulated. He knows how to pick his friends and will pick them wisely.
