Cartoon Heroes Paper Cut-Outs
M.A.S.K.
Produced by DIC Entertainment in conjunction with ICC TV and Ashi Productions, M.A.S.K. is an action/adventure cartoon that premiered in September of 1985. M.A.S.K. (an acronym for ‘Mobile Armored Strike Kommand’) is a special task force led by Matt Trakker, who operate transforming armored vehicles operated by special helmets. The team was formed to battle against the terrorist organization known as V.E.N.O.M. (an acronym for Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem). V.E.N.O.M.'s primary goal is obtaining money through either robbery, extortion, counterfeiting, kidnapping, or attempting to steal historical artifacts, but M.A.S.K. always finds a way to foil their plans.
The cast of voice actors for the series included Doug Stone as Matt Trakker along with Brian George, Graeme McKenna and Sharon Noble.  M.A.S.K. ran for two seasons and was released in concert with a line of toys and action figures.

Well, Year Two of the Energon Universe is in the books with the Free Comic Book Day Special, and with the spoiled appearance of Matt Trakker of M.A.S.K., albeit not looking identical to Duke anymore, it's once again time to check on the other Hasbro properties and see if any of them are viable to also enter the Energon Universe, especially with a fourth slot for the books open, since Robert Kirkman was adamant that they would not publish more than four books at a time.
Well M.A.S.K. is set, but whether they get their own book or not is a question mark. Ever since Hasbro bought the property, they have had a loose connection to G.I. Joe as separate but allied organizations, culminating in a Matt Trakker figure being released under the Joe branding.
Tumblr media
They could easily fill the role of a private organization studying the Cybertronians, or even what the Bay movies tried and failed to do with the Order of the Wittwicians, having a group aware of the Transformers and dealing with them in secret.
ROM and the Micronauts: When it first appeared that Marvel was going to be reprinting the ROM and Micronauts stories, there were some assumptions Hasbro had given up on trying to make stories about the characters independent of Marvel. Two years later, while ROM Vol 1 is the bestselling Marvel omnibus of all time, there has been no word on trying to make a new ROM or new Micronauts story. They could potentially return to the Energon Universe but would face the same problem they did in their atrocious IDW comics, trying to rebuild the mythology of the Spaceknights and Inner Space from scratch, and not being able to use any of the characters Marvel had came up with, although Marvel’s attempt to use them without the Micronauts resulted in Quantumania, aka the moment where the public opinion of the MCU started to shift considerably more sour than at any point prior. They may be available, but it may be an incompatible mixture. I don’t suppose Marvel is interested in them again, are they?
Action Man - Originally the branding for European releases of the original G.I. Joe figures licensed by Hasbro to British company Palitoy, Action Man was eventually turned into a do-it-all super spy when Hasbro directly bought the rights to the franchise, both as a competitor to Mattel’s Max Steel toyline and TV show (which also was about an extreme athlete turned spy. No word on whether or not the XXX franchise also took inspiration). A spy character could work as a supporting character for another book, but the last time Hasbro tried to do an Action Man comic, it died in four issues, leading Hasbro to awkwardly shove him into the critically panned low selling Revolutionaries comic. He may just not be worth the hassle to be his own star, but can work better as a supporting role.
The Visionaries - While it was originally believed that after the failure of Transformers vs Visionaries that the Knights of the Magical Light would be shoved into a corner to be forgotten, they get namedropped in Void Rivals. Furthermore, unlike the IDW versions, Hot Rod appears to have a rather favorable opinion of them, speaking fondly about a “Prysmodian wedding” (Prysmos being the planet where Visionaries takes place). They could easily be the focus of a Void Rivals arc where our heroes (depending on who you follow the book for, that’s either Darak or Solia, the titular Void Rivals, or Hot Rod and Springer, who seem to be on half the covers to boost sales) visit the planet while the magical war is going on. But getting their own series might be tougher.
Hell, so far that seems to be the issue with a lot of the non-Joe/TF franchises that could theoretically be in the Energon Universe. They would be potential interesting additions to the stories of G.I. Joe and the Transformers, but are far less likely to carry their own books. That leaves one Hasbro property, one that IDW adored even when it sold like crap. One Hasbro seems to have declared radioactive.
Jem and the Holograms.
Yes, Jem.
https://youtu.be/m6G_o1MYECg?si=ekg9_H_lVSs5xB8V
youtube
The theme song may say Jem is truly outrageous, but after the legendary failure of the Jem movie (less than $2 million profit on a paltry $5 million budget) and the comics from IDW selling the worst out of all of the Hasbro licenses, Hasbro tends to think she’s truly radioactive.
She has been mentioned ONCE during the Energon Universe’s run, in a letters page in the Cobra Commander miniseries from writer Joshua Williamson.
Tumblr media
You know, there might be something to this. But it would be a radical departure from Jem as was done in IDW and might just piss off just about everybody.
What if Jem was a Dreadnok, or at the least, a member of Cobra? Someone whose family went into a cause that she could care less about when she just wants to sing? Only now she’s potentially armed with Cobra technology which she can use to start her music career, including a computer that will allow her to assume a disguise so no one know who she is.
The only problem is that she’s still a homicidal Dreadnok, one not afraid to kill anyone who starts with her. Think Hannah Montana meets Dexter.
If that’s too radical a departure for Jem, the alternative is Jem being someone who is trying to start a career, only to run smack dab into the insanity that is the Energon Universe. Cobra saboteurs because someone thinks a band called Cold Slither is good PR. Alien technology and robots interested in music. Black market tech and battles when she just wants to sing.
It would potentially be the most radically different of all the EU books no matter what route you chose, but a slice of life/music story in the same universe as all the shooting and robot wrasslin could potentially open up a lot of possibilities as to how the world has changed. The question remains is if Jem could attract an audience. A similar issue occurred with DC’s attempts to make Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld a thing and how DC could not find a market for her, because she was a character that was meant to appeal to young girls, constantly given to people and put in stories that wanted nothing to do with young girls, resulting in what can best be described as Tryhard horror stories that appealed to no one.
So two years later, it seems we have a lot of supporting characters, but no one who could lead a fourth book. Don’t suppose anyone at Skybound wants to write a Shinkalion comic, do they?

I cringe a *little* at the stuff I did when I was Younger Me, but I also want to preserve it.
I have no idea why Instagram has been recommending me videos of people cringing at their middle school art sketchbooks, but I feel like I am missing something

WIP excerpt for videogeek; Kara gets to Earth on time and the Kents get a two-for-one special on free kids.  (( chrono || non-chrono ))
“Kin yoo tekk a luk att te genn-rayt, dee-eer?” Ma asks Pa, and he hums back in tuneless agreement and heads over to help her with the funny, rustic-looking little machine she’s fiddling with in the corner. At least, Kara thinks it’s a machine. The aliens’ technology is mystifyingly primitive and she still doesn’t understand how most of it works. She knows how to activate the lights and stove and locks, rarely as Ma and Pa bother with the locks, and a little of how the “trukk” and “trakker” both operate, but not why any of those things work or what Ma and Pa do to maintain them. She doesn’t even know if they built them themselves or if some Thinker in Smoll-Veel or somewhere else entirely did. They seem like simple enough devices and machines that even a Laborer could’ve built them and Kara’s seen Pa working on the “trukk” and “trakker” before and Ma cleaning the various kitchen devices and stove, but she’s never seen either of them build anything, so . . .
Well, Pa’s working on a fence, and she’s even been helping him with it. But the only “device” on that so far has been a gate, which really isn’t the same thing.
“Guh-ott te wrin-chuh, hunn-ee?” Pa asks, and Ma makes a noise back and hands him a small metal tool. He starts tapping the little machine with it as he looks it over. Kara wishes she could help with whatever they’re working on–wishes she could be useful to them–but she just doesn’t understand the aliens’ technology well enough to.
She watches what Ma and Pa are doing out of the corner of her eye just in case she can learn a little more, and stacks up the cubes for Kal to knock over again as she does. He screeches happily and purrs in excitement, bouncing in place and waving his Krypto by the ear in one chubby little fist that’s already noticeably bigger than it was when they first crash-landed here. Ma and Pa keep fussing over their machine, Pa temporarily opening it up and adjusting a few little things inside it. They don’t seem either frustrated or concerned by the process, so she assumes they’re just doing normal maintenance and not actually having a problem with it.
Though it’s hard for her to tell that kind of thing, admittedly. The aliens’ emotions are difficult to read, and so much of those emotions are relayed just in their bodies–their faces and gestures and even their postures, it seems like. Barely at all in their voices, even as expressive as they are. It’s . . . confusing, a bit.
A lot.
It’s disorienting, actually, but Kara tries not to worry about it as much as she wants to. She just–it’s just something she needs to learn. That’s all.
Another something she needs to learn.
There’s just so, so many things she needs to learn.

it starts off with Hound monologuing about Earth and his purpose in the war. He meets Clutch (some GI Joe guy idk) out in the middle of nowhere and, sensing energon, Hound comes running basically and he and Clutch get into a fight. It ends when Clutch throws an Energon-bomb of some sort, which reveals that Hound is actually injured and cannot transform!
Clutch drags him to get repairs by this guy named Trakker, where they chit-chat for a while as Hound is being repaired, before suddenly Ravage breaks in (because he smells energon) and begins to viciously attack everyone. Clutch and Trakker try to defend themselves, but Hound ends up making Ravage retreat.
It ends with Hound and Clutch being buddies and riding off into the distance together, where Clutch mentions Cobra and Hound immediately starts asking bout it. There’s a scene where it shifts to Cobra stuff, with some glasses-wearing blond guy holding a chainsaw shouts “It’s War” to some other guy in a uniform and red mask. Idk, I only read the TF comics.

Next short story is about Jazz’s love for music, including this very very specific type of music he hears over an alien-frequency radio or something.
It starts off with a cool piece of lore that Jazz, Arcee, Blurr, Bluestreak, and Cliffjumper all played in a band together— with Arcee as their epick lead singer (I think they’re a metal band lmao). Because Jazz is just too kool 4 skool (staying on beat) the band kicks him out and Jazz is left to his lonesome with his favorite thing ever— noise…. Everyone hates his music oml. Optimus comes up to Jazz after hearing some atrocious sound coming from his location, and Jazz shows this “worthless” alien-record device Wheeljack gave away. Jazz likes the weird noise coming from it and it speaks to his soouuuullll… it gives him a question to answer.
The story timeskips to when they’re on Earth, and while driving around with Optimus, Jazz hears the music that the radio had been channeling (something like that). Jazz immediately goes off and tries to find it, ending up at this cocktail lounge, where he discovers… Jazz. The genre of music.
Optimus is trying his best to be supportive this entire time but he’s still confused man—

Void Rivals is the series I didn’t even know existed until this free comic came out tbh so I’m not too sure what’s happening— this one is very short tho.
Quintessons exist (“Goliant” mention, whatever that means), apparently Justice/executions have paused, and all the prisoners are confused and ansty.
Tumblr media
But Wheelie interrupts it all bc he breaks the prisoners free!!!!! Yippee!!!! Sharkticons get released onto them, but they escape. Quintessons declare WAR. States that the Quintesson War begins in Void Rivals #25

And that’s all I got! Hopefully this is helpful <3
THANK YOU LITERALLY SO SO MUCH!!!!! i haven't read the g.i. joe stuff yet (though now that hound is involved maybe i should lol) but. ooh i'm SO glad that we've got more jazz development :D he's one of my favourites so it's nice to see. goliant mention is REALLY interesting, he's very important to the story of void rivals (even whough he was only namedropped like a couple issues ago lol). it's interesting that wheelie's in it! he hasn't been shown yet afaik!! also that's some WILD setup wow.. (btw void rivals is really good and also relates a lot to transformers -- hot rod and springer are in it if that's a selling point)
dude genuinely i cannot thank you enough, it was so kind of you to send this <3 as a comic enjoyer in a not-particularly-comic-rich area this was literally invaluable!
