Stormfall

The sky is disturbed this day, gloomy clouds

surging in from the west like billowing smoke

backed by a vicious wind, and on afternoons

like this I imagine the giant white pine that sits

in the front crashing down like an avalanche

of green and brown, snapped branches forcing

their way into my roof like spears, the massive

trunk toppling like a ship’s mast and snapping

through my roof-beams as it were a toy model,

smashing everything to smithereens, the garage

with its lawn mower standing innocently in the

corner, the kitchen with all of its dishes, plates

and cups reduced to sand, windows exploding

into knives, tile pulverized into gravel, and me

sitting in the next room composing some poem

while my world erupts around me like a missile

strike detonated by the storm, tapping away at

the keyboard without missing a beat, capturing

the mayhem in twenty cool lines that will read

like scripture if this prophecy every comes true.
