Firebug - Pyrrhocoris apterus
Am I featuring this conspicuous insect too soon since the last post made in February? Perhaps I am. However, this post is a special one for a trifecta of reasons. Firstly, the finding of these Firebugs signifies the first find of the year and thusly the insect post photographed in 2025! I was out walking and to my surprise I found this cluster of individuals huddling against the base of a mallow tree. Nearby to them on other mallow trees, there were a few more small-sized aggregations. Likely they had all awoken from their overwintering among the dried leaves and the tree's hollows to enjoy the warm sun against their short-winged backs. They seemed slow and docile, and it's likely too early for them to form mating pairs, but such a gathering may help get things started as temperatures warm over the next few weeks. It's reassuring to see them active so early, but I hope that they aren't too early as we aren't truly safe from winter in Toronto until the beginning of May. Luckily these Bugs are resilient and can retreat under the protection of their tree until spring weather is stable. However, seeing them active and together among many trees gives me hope that spring has arrived a bit earlier. It also gives me incentive to leave the leaf coverage at our house alone a bit longer for all the insects dreaming beneath. Of course, I keep the leaves free of actual litter, and the Jolly Rancher wrapper seen in Picture 9 was removed afterwards.
As for the second reason, the timing of these pictures - literally 3 days ago - was perfect to welcome the first day of spring and the gradual return of warming weather. It's just something done on this blog every time the seasons change to honor the many insects seen throughout the year. With their crimson colors, these Red Bugs are perfect to get everyone excited for spring! Finally, today's post is a special one as it signifies a change in photography and videography equipment. Last month, I upgraded my phone and jumped from my Google Pixel 4 to a Google Pixel 8a. I hesitated a bit on this change, but the Pixel 4's battery and its ability to hold charges had recently deteriorated significantly. While I'm happy to have an upgraded phone, I'm deeply thankful for the Pixel 4's 5 years of loyal service and I'm especially thankful of how much it was able to capture and share here. Counting it up, the Pixel 4 has given the following in service to this blog:
24 gigabytes of insect pictures spread out over 7,008 pictures across 2020 to 2024
5.28 gigabytes of insect videos, spread out over 58 videos across 2020 to 2024
Countless more blurry pictures or small videos which were deleted during the insect observation process across 2020 to 2024
What a legacy to give, and a great technological companion for 5 years. If the 8a can achieve even half of that, I'd be satisfied. With the Pixel 8a, it works similarly to the 4 (with some refinements), and I've been learning the ins and outs while trimming most of the phone's bloat. These Firebugs represent the first step in relearning how to capture insects in a way that is natural but also clear, well-presented and artful to a degree. It immediate seems that it can better handle focusing and zooming in on insects, so hopefully this will carry into all future pictures (and videos too)! Image quality may change compared to what was shown previously, but hopefully it will be a positive change in the long run. Like the Pixel 4, I don’t intend to review the phone. I simply intend to continue to do my best and give these insects the showcasing they deserve. Lastly, thank you, dear reader, for taking the time to visit my blog, see the wonderful insects of Ontario (and other places), and read my writings and ramblings. You are appreciated, in every sense of the word.
Pictures were taken on March 18, 2025 with a Google Pixel 8a, the first showcase of many from a new phone. Happy First Day of Spring!

That it alone is high fantastical

“Oh, Mother, you’ll never guess! You’ll never guess in century of guessing!” Rilla cried out, sounding so much as she had as a little girl, for a moment, Anne could convince herself the War had never happened and that somewhere in Rainbow Valley, Walter sat writing a crown of sonnets in his leather-bound journal, his face dappled by the light, back braced against the bole of a birch tree, his grey eyes unfocused as he searched for his next word.
There was still a white stone in the graveyard. Shirley was in Toronto, having refused (albeit politely) to return to Glen St. Mary, much to Susan’s dismay, and Jem walked with a pronounced limp, his uneven gait announcing him as much as Mary’s voice.
There was a mystery there, Jem and Mary Vance, but Anne couldn’t see any way through it and Gilbert, lying beside her in bed, both of them tired but sleepless, told her not to try. Jem had seemed less removed, less falsely cheerful lately, and had begun talking about the medical course again, perhaps a specialty in obstetrics, a hospital practice. As far away from men dying in battle as he can get, Gilbert had observed and Anne had recalled Joyce’s little face, white as a mayflower blossom, and held her tongue.
Rilla, remarkably, given her exuberant entrance, had done the same in the absence of Anne’s response. Miss Oliver had left Ingleside some weeks ago, so there was no one to suggest Rilla either elaborate or calm herself, as her likeness to a whistling copper tea-kettle was increasingly pronounced.
“If I’ll never guess, dear, you must tell me,” Anne said. It was a relief that Rilla could still be the young girl she ought to be, for all that she wore Ken Ford’s diamond ring on her finger and was capable of a brisk, warm matronliness when it came to raising Jims, now reserved for the writing of letters to his new British stepmother and clucking over the missives she received.
“Faith Meredith has eloped!”
Anne did admit to herself she would never have guessed that, because for all her imagination, she wouldn’t have guessed something impossible.
“But, Rilla, Jem is with your father today, doing the Lowbridge rounds. Susan and I packed a lunch with plenty of pie for Dad and some of that flapjack Jem took to after being in England,” Anne said. He’d been in hospital in England, recovering from the injuries he’d sustained at the Front, in the prison camp, during his escape, none of which was spoken of. Only flapjack and stewed tea and how no cook in England was a patch on Susan and that you may tie to, uttered with some semblance of his old roguish humor.
“I didn’t say she married Jem, Mother!” Rilla exclaimed. Her cheeks were pink and her eyes were bright. She had a look of Gilbert at his most delighted about him, an expression Anne remembered from their childhood. Anne opened her mouth to speak but Rilla interrupted.
“It’s Bertie Shakespeare Drew! Faith Meredith is Mrs. Bertie Shakespeare!” Rilla said.
If Anne hadn’t already been sitting down, she would have, suddenly and gracelessly. As it was, the shirt she’d been mending fell from her lap.
“That’s—why, Rilla, are you sure?”
“I heard it directly from Mary Vance,” Rilla said, lifting a hand to stop Anne from speaking. “And Miss Cornelia Bryant. You know Miss Cornelia has no taste for gossip. Miss Cornelia’d heard it from Mrs. Meredith—”
“Poor Rosemary,” Anne said, before she could stop herself.
“Why poor Rosemary? I suppose they thought Faith and Jem would make a go of it, at least, perhaps Reverend Meredith and Mrs. Meredith did, but the War’s done funny things to people and Faith and Jem, they just didn’t fit any longer,” Rilla said. Sometimes, Anne felt Rilla reminded her of someone she couldn’t name and realized her youngest daughter spoke with the wisdom Anne’s own mother might have had. Plenty of folks in the Glen would find such a thought eerie, but Anne was comforted, for all that she ought to be the one offering a thoughtful explanation rather than receiving it.
“I suppose I meant the surprise, an elopement—”
“They must not have wanted to wait. Or were afraid someone would try to talk them out of it. Bertie’s mother maybe,” Rilla said.
Rosemary or her father, Anne thought. Jem, if he’d been given the chance, perhaps. Perhaps not, if Rilla was correct.
“Bertie Shakespeare Drew,” Anne said. “I remember when he was born. He’s just Jem’s age.”
“He’s not much like you remember him, Mother. He’s all tall and stalwart now and they say he’s going in for engineering, that he learned quite a bit in France, found he had a talent for that sort of thing. And his ears don’t stick out quite so much anymore,” Rilla said.
“There’re more things on heav’n and earth,” Anne said, mangling the quote a bit, fairly certain Rilla would not correct her. “D’you suppose Faith calls him Bertie? Or his full name—it’s quite a mouthful.”
Queenly Faith Meredith, the undisputed beauty of Glen St. Mary, who had a sense of humor but also a sense of herself as beyond any teasing, now to be Mrs. Bertie Shakespeare Drew. Anne smiled to herself and thought how Mary Vance would find a way to make Jem grin over it all. She’s lucky to get him, Mary would say, reversing the order the Glen would have assumed, and Mary, canny and unexpectedly kind, would have the right of it, perhaps.
Susan would be quite outraged and the pastry of her next pie might suffer for it, but Gilbert had always taken an unchristian glee in Susan’s outrage and wouldn’t mind the pastry being a bit heavier. It was still the best piecrust on Prince Edward Island, now that Mrs. Rachel Lynde was no longer living to give Susan a run for her money.
“Miss Cornelia said Faith was heard to call him Will, when she spoke to her parents. It’s after Shakespeare of course, and because he was so determined they marry,” Rilla said.
“And because Faith wanted to,” Anne said. She wasn’t sure if she meant the elopement or the name, but it was all of a piece.
“Miss Cornelia said they’d gone to New York for their honeymoon and she hoped Faith didn’t come back with a bunch of silly Yankee airs but Mary and I didn’t think that was likely,” Rilla said, sitting down beside Anne, picking up the shirt and starting to sew.
“She didn’t come back from England any different, after all,” Rilla said.
“Except that she didn’t marry your brother,” Anne replied.
“D’you know, Mother, even without the War, I don’t think they’d ever have gone through with it, Faith and Jem,” Rilla said. “It was, how shall I put it, like a childhood fairy tale, the honorable knight and the maiden fair, all sorts of adventures they had in Rainbow Valley. They were always going to grow up. We all were.”
Not Walter, Anne’s heart said. Not Joyce.
“I’m glad of Ken’s name, anyway. And don’t worry, I wouldn’t elope for anything. I want our families around us, as many as we can get, even if we have to wait. We’re rather good at that,” Rilla said. She’d finished the one shirt and picked up another. She peered at it, frowned. “I can’t think what Dad does to his clothes—”
“I’ve made up a thousand stories to try to explain that and I still don’t think I’ve figured it out,” Anne said. “Some things, my darling girl, are beyond explanation.”
This one's for @freyafrida because I didn't manage to squeeze Faith/Bertie Shakespeare into my Jem/Mary fic...

Unit 09: Sense-Making of Nature Interpretation
If you asked me where you might discover nature's most spectacular wonders, I'd probably surprise you with the answer: here in Toronto. You don't have to go into the Amazon or climb the Rockies to see something spectacular nature is occurring all around us, even in the heart of the city. Allow me to take you on a voyage into an untamed realm that lies in plain sight. During a late-night walk in High Park, I witnessed one of the most breathtaking sights I've ever seen. I expected solitude or the distant bustle of the city, but the park was bustling. A family of raccoons gazed down at me from a branch, their veiled features interested yet apprehensive. A great horned owl hooted in the distance, merging into the darkness. And then came the moment I'll never forget: a red fox rushed across the path, its coat shimmering beneath the streetlight. It paused for a little while, locking eyes with me as if noticing my presence, before retreating into the trees. How many of us stroll through the city every day, unaware that we share it with creatures who have adapted to our environment? The city is not only built of glass buildings and concrete it's a stage for one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen. If I've learnt anything about Toronto's fauna, it's that they are masters of survival. A great horned owl hooted in the distance, merging into the darkness. The city is not only built of glass buildings and concrete it's a stage for one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen. If I've learnt anything about Toronto's fauna, it's that they are masters of survival. Did you know that these amazing birds, who were formerly endangered, have made an amazing return by developing on Toronto's tallest buildings? They see our towers as cliffs, the ideal hunting grounds for their high-speed dives. Peregrines are the world's fastest creatures, reaching speeds of nearly 300 km/h while diving for food. That means the fastest living mammal might be swooping over you while you have your morning coffee downtown. How fantastic is that? For those who believe that nature is far removed from city life, I challenge them to visit the Don Valley, Rouge National Urban Park, or even the Toronto Islands. These areas are rich with biodiversity. In the Don Valley, I once witnessed a beaver meticulously building a reservoir in the midst of a city famed for its busy streets and towering buildings. Rouge Park, Canada's first national urban park, is home to deer, endangered turtles, and more than 200 bird species. And don't forget about the monarch butterflies, which pass through Toronto every fall before flying thousands of kilometers to Mexico. Imagine a small butterfly flying over a whole continent! What is the best part? You don't have to go anyplace special to experience nature's majesty; it's just in your own backyard. Nature is not separate from us; it is integrated into our daily existence. And when we pay closer attention, we realize how remarkable it is. So, the next time you stroll around Toronto, take a moment to look up, listen carefully, and enjoy the wild environment that thrives right beside us.

Blog 1: Connected to Nature
Hello, ENVS*3000 friends! I'm Maia, and I am in my third year of Biological Sciences. Welcome to my first blog :)
I would describe my current connection with nature as a profound yet carefree essence. I come from the city, more precisely, North Toronto; I found myself yearning for nature's embrace from a young age, perhaps triggered by its scarcity in my urban surroundings. Recognizing my affinity, my dad, a nature enthusiast, actively fueled my passion through camping adventures, hiking escapades, and shared moments immersed in captivating David Attenborough documentaries. In the midst of a large Italian family, where the majority remained indifferent to the natural world, I stood out as the quiet one, the nature lover, aspiring Dr.-to-be. Amidst this, my dad became my reliable support, sharing the same passion for the great outdoors. His passion for wildlife and landscape photography became a shared pursuit, complete with my very own camera.
Photo of a male wood duck shot by Dino Melissa
Despite a bustling upbringing as a competitive dancer for 17 years—which is not exactly an outdoor sport—I surrounded myself with nature books, my dad's photographs, and nature documentaries. Unfortunately, while balancing a hectic city life, the opportunities for my dad and I’s outdoor adventures diminished over the years. However, as I am maturing and expanding my knowledge, I continuously discovered new ways to appreciate nature and its interconnected web of life - not mosquitoes though…
In my quest to inspire others to view nature through a similar lens as I do, I spent the past summer at a wildlife hospital, manning the front desk. Handling cases ranging from fallen hawks to orphaned baby raccoons to pigeons with string around their feet, I strived to educate callers about wildlife while debunking misconceptions. Some common ones are that pigeons are dirty and will give us diseases, and snakes are evil - spoiler alert, both are very wrong! While not everyone appreciated or grasped the educational aspect—some mistaking us for pest removal—many left with a newfound understanding of Ontario's wildlife. Small changes, after all, contribute to a broader impact of protecting our native species. This job expanded my knowledge - which I still try to share with anyone who will listen - and played a pivotal role in further evolving my relationship with nature.

Picture of an American Kestrel
One place that has bestowed upon me a profound sense of place is my cottage—a haven of tranquillity like no other. Nestled on about an acre of land, backing onto a forest, it teems with diverse wildlife such as deer, coyotes, foxes, turkeys, grouse, and a plethora of native plants. Whether quietly observing the tree line or engaging in summer activities like kayaking and hiking, the ambient sounds of water, wind, and nature's symphony create a genuine sense of place; whenever I am there I feel as if I belong there. It's here that I yearn to escape city living permanently, trading it for the allure of a rural plot of land to live off of sustainably.

Picture of the backyard during the winter
The dream of owning a small farm and caring for animals has been a lifelong goal of mine. The charm of sustainable living intertwines with my passion for nature; here is where I hope to coexist in harmony. Through responsible practices and a deep connection with nature, I aim to contribute to the preservation of the natural world, all while feeling a permanent sense of place like no other.

Good News - March 8-14, 2024
Like these weekly compilations? Support me on Ko-fi! Also, if you tip me on here or Ko-fi, at the end of the month I’ll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn’t use each week - almost double the content! (I’m new to taking tips on here; if it doesn’t show me your username or if you have DM’s turned off, please send me a screenshot of your payment)
1. Colorado could bring back wolverines in an unprecedented rewilding effort
“A bipartisan group of Colorado lawmakers are proposing legislation to reintroduce wolverines, one of the country’s rarest carnivores, into a state primed with deep snow and high mountains. The unprecedented move would be the first wolverine reintroduction in North America, and is part of an ongoing effort by Coloradans to restore the state’s native species.”
2. heat pumps slash emissions even if powered by a dirty grid
“Installing a heat pump now is better for the climate, even if you run it on U.S. electricity generated mostly by fossil fuels. […] Across the 48 continental states, RMI found that replacing a gas furnace with an efficient heat pump saves emissions not only cumulatively across the appliance’s lifetime, but also in the very first year it’s installed.”
3. Bald eagles seen nesting in Toronto for first time in city’s recorded history
“Presence of birds proof of improving health of city’s green spaces, as they are highly sensitive to environmental disturbances”
4. Good news for coral reef restoration efforts: Study finds 'full recovery' of reef growth within four years
“"We found that restored coral reefs can grow at the same speed as healthy coral reefs just four years after coral transplantation," says Ines Lange of University of Exeter, UK. "This means that they provide lots of habitat for marine life and efficiently protect the adjacent island from wave energy and erosion."”
5. The rewilding project bringing back an ancient breed of cattle to Portugal

“For millennia, grazing aurochs created open spaces for other species to thrive. As the closest to the extinct auroch depicted on the prehistoric engravings, Goderie says tauros can fulfil [sic] a similar ecological function that is vital for biodiversity. "Natural grazing will lead to more natural processes that are missing from local ecosystems, more habitats and more biodiversity," he says.”
6. Sycamore Gap: New life springs from rescued tree
“The horticulturalists also successfully planted seeds from the Sycamore Gap tree, now its descendants. Five months on, they are looking after nine surviving grafted plants and 40-50 seedlings.”
7. Massachusetts library will excuse overdue book charges in exchange for cat photos: ‘Feline Fee Forgiveness’
““Some of the staff were in a meeting and they were coming up with ways to bring people back to the library, and they thought, ‘What if we removed as many barriers as possible and told people they could show us a picture of a cat, draw a picture of a cat or just tell us about a cat?'””
8. Lesbian couple give birth to each other’s baby in UK first
“Their success marks the first time the procedure – which allows lesbian parents to simultaneously share in the pregnancy process, with one supplying eggs and the other carrying the baby – has been carried out in the UK.”
9. Biden-Harris administration has established four new units in the National Wildlife Refuge System

“The new four-million-acre conservation area will provide crucial protected wildlife corridors, enhance outdoor recreation access to the public and bolster climate resilience in southwest Florida.”
10. New truck front to save lives
“[B]etter truck designs can reduce passenger car compartment deformations by 30-60 percent, which reduces the risk of injury for the car occupants. Deformation of the truck was also reduced in sensitive areas and improved truck driver safety and cargo security.”

Some long-awaited Jasya for your dash :) First look into If Found, Please Burn (aka the sister story to the Wedding Planner au!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the lock on the door to the empty apartment clicked to unlock, Daya and Willow were welcomed with a duet of meows. Both girls were careful to sneak inside and not accidentally let the cats into the apartment building’s hallway.
“Why did I have to come with you here? I could have waited outside the building for you.” Daya pointed out as she removed her denim jacket and threw it over the couch. Jasmine has been out of town for barely a week and Daya has hardly had her vacation from the annoying blonde. Being forced to go to Jasmine’s apartment by Willow wasn’t really on her plans for the afternoon.
“Because I need you to keep the cats busy while I clean their litter, feed them, and give them fresh water,” Willow explained as she started to get to work in the kitchen. “Oh, and their treats. Jasmine wanted to make sure that they got their treats.” She picked up a Temptations box and shook it, getting Aveyah and Theo’s attention.
Daya plopped down on the couch, talking to Willow through the wall cut-out between the living room and kitchen. “What do you expect me to do with them? You know I’m not a cat person.” Just another reason that she and Jasmine never got along. Daya never understood how she and Jasmine even belonged in the same friend group, with how often the two argued and bickered.
Willow shrugged as she shooed the cats out of the kitchen and back into the living room. “Play with them, I guess. I think there’s a box of cat toys in her bedroom somewhere.”
Daya sighed dramatically “Fine, I’ll go keep them occupied.” She stood up off the couch and headed down the hall to Jasmine’s bedroom. Before she got too far, Willow’s voice pulled her attention back.
“Oh, and Daya?”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t look through her stuff to use for blackmail.” Willow deadpanned, as she washed the food bowls in the sink.
“I wasn’t going to!” Daya exclaimed as she turned down to the hall and quickly found Jasmine’s bedroom.
She has never been in the bedroom before, but she could tell it was Jasmine’s. Pink wall decorations, stuffed animals all over the bed, and a tall cat tree in the corner. The room was perfect for Jasmine, and Daya felt instantly annoyed at the thought of Jasmine’s presence, even if Jasmine was over 450 miles away from her.
The last time she saw Jasmine was at Kerri’s family’s beach house in Malibu. Kerri invited the friend group for the weekend to spend at the beach house. Kerri said that her moms and younger sister wouldn’t be there that weekend, but Daya saw a motorcycle pull into the driveway outside the house in the morning.
All Daya remembered with Jasmine that weekend was a small thunderstorm started and she jokingly locked the blonde outside, and then Jasmine came back inside very pissed off and stayed in one of the bedrooms for the rest of the night.
A few days after the weekend passed, Kerri texted her and Bosco that Jasmine wasn’t going to board game night, since Jasmine would be in Toronto for the next three weeks.
Daya didn’t care why Jasmine chose to run off to Canada, she was just glad that she didn’t have to deal with her for three full weeks.
This was going to be the most stress-free three weeks of Daya’s life.
Or at least she assumed that was going to be the case.

East Manitoba: Winnipeg
After leaving Kenora and driving into Manitoba, the forest gives way to the Prairies and quickly there's no tree in sight! The famous big skies were blurred though from yet more smoke so not getting the pretty views but rather feeling like the sky was leaning down... 🤔
After checking in at the AirBnB, I went over to Harman's parents' house where I had stayed in 2017 when I was here for a canoeing trip & of which I have great memories so it was fun to go back & meet his parents again! The house was decorated for the upcoming wedding celebration and full of relatives that had come in from all over, and it was great to see Harman and meet his wife Ankita and their little boy Mir... they were married 3 years ago during covid but couldn't celebrate it with friends & family so now it was the occasion to have everyone together. When I received the invite, I hadn't made any plans yet for the roadtrip so this was a perfect event to plan my trip around!
As anyone knows who's been to one, Indian get-togethers tend to be quite chaotic 😁, so had fun conversations over delicious (& not too spicy) appetizers but darted home at 11pm before dinner was served 😅
Next morning, I did the first car wash since the trip started so now the car looked slightly less dirty (although it will need a power wash to remove all dead bugs 🥴), and then I went downtown to the Forks going back to what I loved most when I was here previously; lunch at the Commons Market and then a visit to the Human Rights Museum, going progressively from dark to light to its Tower of Hope. I had stayed here for 5 hours last time, learning a tremendous amount about Canadian human rights issues that as a newcomer to the country I was not aware of, so wanted to revisit now I've lived here longer and became a Canadian citizen. Every nation has skeletons in the closet they prefer not to talk about, but it's important to be aware of all history, the good and the bad, to truly appreciate the place you call home and be more socially aware of how governments take care of its people. I would dare other countries to follow suit with a similar place of human rights education & reflection!
On the way, I ran into two familiar faces; my old Sumach street in Toronto and Mahatma Ghandi, who I just read a book about 😃

I had been instructed to show up early for the wedding ceremony, so I donned the dress that I had sent in advance to Harman's mum to keep it clean from camping smoke and dirt 😆 and made my way to the pretty gardens of The Gates on Roblin by 4.30pm.
As for a traditional Indian wedding, we danced in the courtyard while the groom made his entrance (with their little son as the best man 😍) and then attended a lovely ceremony followed by a reception, delicious dinner and fun dance party. I got no pics apart from the video-booth below as I was too busy enjoying and meeting interesting people while shaking my best Indian moves 🤣 on the dance floor... it was a really fun night! 🤗

My epic quest to see Beetlejuice isn’t over and I’ve been saving up to see it since 2019.
Here are the options I’ve concidered recently from least likely to most:
Beetlejuice Jr
Option is immediately out the window because the rights are only available in the US and Canada and if I’m going all that way it’s not going to be to see a production by children I don’t know.
Beetlejuice Australia
Eddie perfect is a good selling point, August isn’t an ideal time for me because that’s when the Edinburgh Fringe is but I might not actually work the fringe this year and just watch shows which would give me the flexibility to go buuuuttt
Melbourne is about a 22 hour flight away and it would probably cost me £1.1k+ just for the flights and then I’d spend most of my time there recovering from the flights. Not a no but a probably not as I currently have better options like
Cruise
The Norwegian Viva has a scaled down 90 minute production with changes like removing Otho if I thought there was an affordable way to see this I’d be on that ship like yesterday
Cruise Plan 1 - go on a cruise
The Viva doesn’t do any shorter trips that start and/or end in The UK so on top of the fortune the cruise would cost that’s flights and possibly accommodation to even get to and from the cruise and I don’t even know if I like cruises
Cruise Plan 2 - get a job on the Viva
Even if I could get the job I simply cannot take time out of my studies to work on the ship just to see it even if that was a thought that briefly crossed my mind when I learned someone I know was offered a job on the Viva. And I know some cruise lines you don’t even get to choose what ship you’re on and best I can tell only the Viva has it. Also, I don’t mention this often, but I am disabled and that might stop me from getting the job or make it a misery.
Tour (especially Canada)
This is the option I’ve been considering the longest and I’ve been checking most stops to see if there’s any way to get affordable flights to that area and how close the theatre is to the airport,
Canada is the longest I’ve seen the tour stop in one place and I do know a few people in Toronto but also it’s a big place and I’m not sure they’re close. 7.5 hour flight isn’t the worse and flights would be about £400 round trip. This was my No. 1 plan for a good while until the big announcement-
Beetlejuice Broadway is returning for a Limited Revival Run October 8th to January 3rd
I wanna see it so bad even with the prices being way higher than the last time I tried to see it in New York. I was that exited even before I learned Alex Brightman is returning. It’s not in the Winter Garden but it’s possible they’ll even have some of the original set in storage or be able to recreate it so I get to see it in full(ish) glory, but I’ll be happy if it’s the tour set.
Again I take my education seriously because Beetlejuice the Musical was a big factor in showing me the glory of what technical theatre can do and without a degree I may never get to work on a show like Beetlejuice if it ever came to the UK.
October and November basically isn’t an option because it’s term time BUT December is Winter Break, if I can get in before the Christmas season is in full swing I may be able to go on a budget and see other New York Things wile I’m there like The American Museum of Natural History or Central Park Zoo or Macy’s or that one big tree above an ice rink from Hawkeye and other media.
Still crunching the numbers but I know this kinda trip will be pricey but the possibility of Beetlejuice returning to Broadway was the main reason I started a Beetlejuice savings fund in 2019 as back then it would have cost my life savings to go see it in NYC and I would have paid that. Now it will cost me My Beetlejuice savings and that’s what they’re for (if they had announced a West End run with Alex Brightman I would have used that fund to see it SO many times).
I’m still crunching the numbers but if you see this post that’s either a good sign that I am close to achieving this dream or a bad sign that I am close to giving up. If I can’t make NYC work I’d rather figure that out sooner rather than later so I can look into the viability of Canada.
And it’d be very bold of me but I might even ask if they’ll be doing a back stage tour. As long as it cost less than the ticket I’ll be getting for the show I could splurge on that if I have any left over money. Might even see if they’ll be doing have merch that would fit in a carry on.
I feel like at least 1 theatre on or around Broadway will be doing a backstage tour.

If Found, Please Burn- Chapter 1

If you found love letters addressed to you written by the person you hated most, would you read them?
Aaahh!! It's finally here!! Chapter 1 now available, as promised. This fic is very special and sentimental for me, and I'm so happy it can finally see the light of day. Also I'm testing out different formats on here, so please bear with me :)
Read on ao3
As the lock on the door to the empty apartment clicked to unlock, Daya and Willow got a warm welcome with a duet of meows. Both girls were careful to sneak inside and not accidentally let the cats into the apartment building’s hallway.
“Why did I have to come with you here? I could have waited outside the building for you.” Daya pointed out as she removed her denim jacket and threw it over the couch. Jasmine has been out of town for barely a week, and Daya has hardly had her vacation from the annoying blonde. Being forced to go to Jasmine’s apartment by Willow wasn’t really on her plans for the afternoon.
“Because I need you to keep the cats busy while I clean their litter, feed them, and give them fresh water,” Willow explained as she started to work on the list of tasks in the kitchen.
She has a box of cat toys in her bedroom somewhere.”
Daya sighed dramatically “Fine, I’ll go keep them occupied.” She stood off the couch and headed down the hall to Jasmine’s bedroom. Before she got too far, Willow’s voice pulled her attention back.
“Oh, and Daya?”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t look through her stuff to use for blackmail.” Willow deadpanned as she washed the food bowls in the sink.
“I wasn’t going to!” Daya whined as she turned down the hall and quickly found Jasmine’s bedroom.
She’s never been in the bedroom before, but after one look, this was absolutely Jasmine’s bedroom. Pink wall decorations, stuffed animals all over the bed, and a tall cat tree in the corner. The room was perfect for Jasmine, and Daya felt instantly annoyed at the thought of Jasmine’s presence, even if physically Jasmine was over two-thousand miles away from her.
The last time she had seen Jasmine was at the Colby family beach house in Malibu. Kerri invited the friend group for the weekend to spend at the beach house. Kerri said that her moms and younger sister wouldn’t be there that weekend, but Daya saw an SUV in the driveway and an open coloring book on the kitchen counter in the morning.
All Daya remembered with Jasmine that weekend was when a minor thunderstorm hit, then she jokingly locked the blonde outside, and then Jasmine came back inside very pissed off and stayed in one of the bedrooms for the rest of the night.
A few days after the weekend passed, Kerri texted her and Bosco that Jasmine wasn’t going to board game night since Jasmine would be in Toronto for three weeks.
Daya didn’t care why Jasmine ran off to Canada for almost a month. She was just glad that she didn’t have to deal with her for three full weeks.
This was going to be the most stress-free three weeks of Daya’s life.
Or at least she assumed that was going to be the case.
Daya scanned the room and found a box of cat toys next to the tall cat tree. Inside held a few dangling wands, about a dozen small plastic balls, and a jar of catnip. She picked out a few different toys, then tossed them in front of the cats, and picked out a wand with a pink feather on the end. Jasmine did spoil her cats with toys and treats, that’s for sure.
Daya sat on Jasmine’s bed, dangling the wand in front of Aveyah, as she reached and tried to grab the feather before Daya pulled it away. Theo found one of his favorite toys that Daya pulled out, a tiny plush mouse with catnip embedded inside. The ginger cat clawed the mouse with his paw, threw it in the air, and chased it to wherever it landed.
Daya never considered herself a cat person, but she realized she liked cats a little more than she initially thought as she watched the two cats play. As much as she preferred dogs, the cats seemed very focused on pouncing on their prey, and Daya found it very enjoyable to watch.
After several minutes of playing with the cats, Daya swung the wand, just as Theo’s mouse flew through the air. The stick of the wand hit the mouse, and made it fall against one of the walls, and drop behind the dresser. Daya watched Theo try to stretch his arms to reach under the dresser to save his toy, but he had no such luck.
A few whining meows from Theo, begging Daya to help retrieve his toy. Daya was already seeing similarities between Jasmine and her cats, she chuckled at the thought as she left the wand on the bed and walked across the room to the dresser.
Laying on her stomach, Daya reached her long arms under the dresser and felt around for the toy as Theo crouched and watched underneath. She eventually found the toy and grabbed it from its place against the baseboard. As she pulled back her arm, Daya felt her hand brush against a box stowed carefully in the corner.
Curiosity crept into Daya’s mind a few seconds after returning Theo his toy. For some unknown reason, she wanted to know what was in the box. It felt like a shoebox, but why was it hidden under the dresser? What could be inside?
Succumbing to the curiosity, Daya stood to inch out the dresser and eased out the box. The lid of the box instantly caught more of her attention. Written in a black Sharpie, the words IF FOUND, PLEASE BURN covered the old Adidas sneakers box.
Daya had to know what was in the box now, even if the instructions told her differently.
She carefully lifted the lid and found a paper ripped from a notepad on top of the other documents in the box. She took it out first and read it.
To whoever finds this box,
I’ve kept the letters in this box closely guarded here. So if you happened to find them, I’m probably either dead or in prison. I’m writing this note to make sure these letters are never seen again. These letters were never meant to be mailed, or given to the person they are addressed to. So please, don’t read any further. Just find the easiest and quickest way to destroy these letters, and move on. I trust you to follow these instructions and please do not read anything else in this box.
Thank you,
Jasmine Kennedie
Even though Daya loathed Jasmine, she wanted to respect the other girl's wishes and pretend that this box never existed. It was the right thing to do, as the letters weren’t hers to see or even know about their existence. Whatever Jasmine was keeping secret, it was for who knew how long, and it had to stay that way.
Daya moved her hand and was about to place the note where she found it on top, but realized that the first letter was inside faced-up. She easily could have put the note back, put the lid back on, left the box where she found it, and moved on with her life. Continue hating Jasmine, and never think twice about this damn box again in her life.
But her eyes had to betray the blind trust that Jasmine gave her, and Daya saw who the first letter was addressed to.
Her blood ran cold, and she read the top part of the letter several times, not believing at first what she was reading. She looked through the other letters to read the address lines, and they all read the same thing.
Dear Daya, and Dear Daya, and another Dear Daya…
The letters were all addressed to her.
Jasmine, the girl who only shared hatred for each other as long as they have known each other, was writing letters to her. And it seemed whatever Jasmine was writing to her about, she was the last person to know about this.
But, on the other hand, she was already in too deep. Daya thought about it for a moment, considering her options. She could leave the box, never knowing what was in the letters, and continue the hate-hate relationship she had with Jasmine. Just like nothing ever happened.
Or, she could dig herself into a deeper hole and just read whatever was on the letters. They could just be a harmless prank or Jasmine venting out the issues that she’s had with Daya.
Either way, Daya had nothing to lose. Jasmine was never going to find out whether Daya read the letters or not, so why not see what the letters said?
Taking a deep breath, Daya pulled out the first letter in the box and began reading it.
Dear Daya,
Lemon invited me to stay with her in Toronto for a few weeks, and I’m going to take the offer.
She’s the only person who knows how I feel about you, and she thinks I just need space from you and everything that reminds me of you. I’ve had this stupid crush on you for over two years, and I’ve tried everything else to get over it. I’m tired of being in love with someone that I’m supposed to hate.
So when I get back to LA, I have to be over-
“I’m almost done, I’m taking this to the trash chute and then we can leave!”
Willow’s voice jolted Daya from her focus on the letter. Shit, she was running out of time.
In a panic, Daya took out her phone, opened the camera, and took pictures of the letters. She had to know what the rest of them said.
Carefully putting the letters and the notes back in the order she found them, she scrambled back to put the box under the dresser, back in the corner. She barely remembered to move the dresser back against the wall as Willow re-entered the apartment.
“You ready to go?” Willow popped her head into the bedroom, and Daya nodded and cleared her throat to respond.
“Y-yeah. Let’s get out of here, it's too pink and girly for me here.” Daya quickly followed her friend out of the apartment.
As the two walked back through the building and back out to the street, Daya only had one thought that refused to leave her mind for the next three weeks.
Jasmine has been in love with her and has kept it a secret for almost as long as they have seemingly both hated each other.
