i don't think that in general i can contribute anything to the Bleak House/"english majors can't read" discussion because my experience of reading education is simply too foreign --- my primary takeaway has been that bleak house fucks actually --- but also reading the excerpts of the students in the study has made me very conscious of my reading process; i keep slipping into narrating it to myself as if i'm studying my own reading proficiency. i'm like, okay, so i DO know what michaelmas term is, but only because i ran into it when i was researching the history of oxbridge for my fanfiction---
