my god i am so sorry it took this long for me to answer this!! ya girl has been super busy and exhausted from life tbh. but i am finally back home and trying to catch up with all the things i need to do ;-; starting with this ask!

my anime watched (on a google spreadsheet lmao):

i think the total is 25! there are some that i kinda watched in passing while my sister had it on the tv and i just happened to be nearby, but for these i only count the ones that i actively paid attention to. definitely not as many as a well-versed weeb but i can no longer call myself a beginner either lmao.

i only have music from the following animes: demon slayer, my hero academia, attack on titan, jujutsu kaisen, assassination classroom, mashle, paradox live (unfortunately 😵‍💫). i have the opening theme of my happy marriage and the instrumental of the ending but i feel like that barely counts. some of the ones i have from demon slayer are like instrumental/characters theme covers that other people make cause i don't think the official ost is released on spotify and any osts uploaded on youtube get taken down sooner or later 😔 (mugen train i'm referring to you 😩 you didn't ask but i have so many favs from the ost [tracks 21 {tanjiro vs. enmu}-25, 27-30, 32-33 {rengoku vs. akaza}])

currently only 36 songs in my weeb playlist, but there are definitely songs i know that i just haven't saved! either cause i don't like it enough to save or cause i don't actively think about saving anime music when i initially hear it lol :") or cause it's not on spotify and i'm too lazy to download locally. i only saved a bunch of MHA stuff recently because you sent me that ask about it a while ago LMAO

i wish i could pull together my own spotify wrapped-esque graphics since this year's sucked BALLS (i heard they laid off a bunch of their staff and used ai for the wrapped this year. ugh). but for the stats themselves, looks like songs (lyrics) vs. instrumentals/themes (no lyrics) is split ~60/40. some of these songs with lyrics i would definitely forfeit for the instrumentals if were actually on spotify (e.g. some of the paralive stuff... the rapping is sooo cringe but the beats are sooo good 😭)

Initial Thoughts on TOMORROW X TOGETHER's The Name Chapter: Freefall

Ok so i just listened to TNC: Freefall in full and damn, okay. Really solid album, sonically. And i say sonically bc i haven't read up on the lyrics just yet (i don't think the eng trans are out yet ☹️)

Am loving how they're showcasing more of their vocals (txt lower register enthusiasts, we are being fed at last 😭) and the whole band/session feels of the music really emphasizes that.

can we take a minute to talk about beomkai's vocals?? bc i really think this might be their era 🥹 and seeing as all of the boys have at least 2 credits to their name in this album, it really feels like this is their sound, and their personal music preferences came through too

i'm on the fence about DILT's inclusion in the album though. we all know it was not a planned track at all but it was a really good opportunity for them to collaborate and have a fun summer track out before headlining lolla 2023.

that said, it just doesn't seem to fit in (at least sonically) in this album. i don't know if moving it higher up in the tracklist would have been better since i haven't read the lyrics yet but sonically, it might have worked more since the more powerful/complex sounding tracks are in the first half, imo

but overall, this album is full of surprises, and very good ones at that!! I'm sure i'll love it even more when i listen to it again but yeah, from the first listen alone, i would recommend this album!!!

This form is a piece composed based off of a ‘Base’ motif/theme, and is layered and staggered across the different instruments, the motif can be transposed and fragmented over time

I LOVE the effect it makes, the overlapping motifs create an ambiguous blur that suggests a rough harmony

The Motif has to have enough variation in rhythms so the harmony can shine through as the motifs are layered at different points in time. Need enough held notes and enough running notes for interest

Very interested in composing in this form for one of my movements

omg speaking of gworls i forgot to share my thoughts on the album here bc i was so excited the whole weekend

anyways! i REALLY liked it. overall, the whole album isn’t as cohesive as savage ngl, but it’s still good. savage was such a tight, top tier album that it would be very hard to top. even in the whole of kpop, savage has to one of the most cohesive album to come, even in all my 10+ years of listening to kpop i don’t think ive come across an album that is so sonically cohesive as savage was so i understand why some mys are a bit let down in that regard. that being said, girls is still very fun!!! & i’m always here for a fun kpop album

however!! the song girls itself has to be aespa’s darkest sound. & yeah, i agree that it sounds like an nct song, but i mean it as compliment!!! because i actually think that despite so many trying to replicate nct’s sound, no one has come this close to actually doing it while still maintaining their own touch. winter & ningning adding those cute & fun adlibs makes it such an aespa song & nice contrast to the loud trumpets in the chorus i love it!! imo girls sounds to me like nice blend between turn back time by wayv & punch by nct 127, while the mv seems heavily informed by kick it (i see a bit of punch in some transitions shots too). but again, it’s still very aespa, especially in the fact that has a clearer storyline. back to the song, the production seems very influenced by turn back time & overall wayv’s use of guitars to build up momento with the added horns from punch to add grandioseness &, well, punch. it makes them sound like characters in a big fight about defeat their big baddie. which apparently they do because i’ve read this is the end of the black mamba storyline. the girls add so much sass to the song— to pretty much any song they touch. sm struck gold when they decided to put all four of them together, they cover every ground just by the four of them, it’s so gorgeous to hear them.

illusion is just. such a fucking good song. the choreo adds so much to the song too. from the strong opening w the alarms blaring in your ear & the slurping, winter’s opening line of “you’re so yummy, yummy, yummy in my tummy, tummy, tummy” 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 that…was crazy. insane. there’s no taking out the sexual connotations out of this whole song no matter how much they tried to make it fit into the aespa storyline. it’s so fun & sexy i love it. i loved that the choreo follows pretty closely to the formula the song follows in that it a slow build up that explodes by the second middle of the second verse than it takes its second wind. i think this might be one of their best b-sides & choreographies. it’s almost as good as i’ll make you cry, which i’m still hoping & begging to see performed live with a cool choreo 😭 i honestly think this album could have been a double feature with illusion being the second title track. this should have been the song to get an english version &/or an mv. sm, hear me out, we can still make this work. hear me out!!!! just make an illusion mv instead of leaving my girls jobless once the promotion period is over, you could even get a second boost in sells w this genius idea!!! (hmu for more input 😘).

lingo is so fun!!! i havent gotten into reading the translations yet but i can almost tell this is aespa saying you can make fun of all the made up words & stories their concept requires you to understand but that doesn’t make them any less cool. i see the country influences everyone has pointed out, it’s probably how the song started, but i insist!! this is not a country song!! this is nortec!!! look it up, look up nortec. i know this, this genre was literally birthed in my home city & the streets grew up in. idk who lixa, the producer, is, but they (accidentally??) made a nortec song. lingo is for las norteñas 🤠

life’s too short is cute but i agree it’s not their strongest song. that much i knew when they previewed at coachella. it’s very much elevated by their gorgeous voices & smart layering. the mv was so cute tho!! very dreamy & cute. i think it’s befitting they sing a song like this considering the amount of hate they have received since debut, much of unwarranted. i just hope the girls themselves actually believe as much because they do deserve to enjoy their hard work. they have achieved so much in such a short career & are such strong performers, enough to rival bigger groups. it’s no wonder they keep going viral, they work hard & are good at demonstrating it on stage.

icu…it’s a song. a song sung by aespa. this has to be their most forgettable song imo, i’m sorry. it’s pretty but…it’s just there. it’s the required sm ballad & they delivered. i don’t have much else to say other than they sound pretty.

i know a lot of fans disliked that this album included their previous singles but i’m actually really glad it did! i’m glad i can now have a physical copy of black mamba & dreams come true to play in my car that i dont drive. but if i ever did, i have it & i can cause a car crash while swinging my head to black mamba. plus, no offense to any icu fans out there, but ending the album in that when we had such a strong start with girls & illusion would have been such a snooze. ending it with dreams come true!!!!! feels more befitting ngl.

anyways, that’s all i have to say for now. but i’m sure i will continue to talk about this album because aespa has been one of the most exciting kpop acts to follow right now & i’m always excited to talk about their music to anyone who is willing to listen!!!

Idk how many more fights would be there, we don't have that many significant villains, like Toga, Spinner, Dabi (defeated), and Skeptic (??) Though maybe Geten, Trumpet, Re-Destro and Mr Compress are out of jail? (8) I feel we might see a few new villains fights instead. Though that would be boring... Idk, I feel like only Toga and Spinner are fights that matter (not counting Shigaraki, OFA and Dabi)

and def not saying ur wrong bc like nobody knows LOL but just some notes on my end:

- i still think all trumpet sounds in that vid were audio dubbing, if not for the growl technique then bc iirc the tone and delivery of each trumpet sounds the exact same, which u don’t get with different players and different trumpets, especially beginners/people who aren’t used to it? unless kimi is also secretly a trumpet player, it’s like, too clean imo so i don’t rlly trust the audio in the trumpet vid…

- i see your point definitely but to me it’s like he doesn’t know anything about the french horn except generally how to hold it the right side up? like i doubt he made much of a sound either, and to me it doesn’t look like he could have made one at all? and even supposing he had the trumpet embouchure/posture as a frame of reference, wouldn’t he also know generally how to position his head, even if he didn’t know exactly how to hold the instrument? unless he was a truly awful trumpet player in school i feel like that very basic posture is smth he should have kept, and the only reason i say this is bc i’ve seen regular ppl (aka ppl who don’t have seb’s astuteness, intuition, memory, etc) come back to the trumpet after years of not playing, and even tho they were rusty, they still managed to remember the very basics, and then it was like riding a bike.

- i know very little about didgeridoo technique but i’m going to do some sleuthing bc this is most intriguing 👁 is cheek puffing part of it, or is it something he’s emulating because a lot of didgeridoo players circular breathe and he thinks that’s what ppl are supposed to do normally?

i wouldnt say he knows too much to have certainly played an instrument in the past, not that that’s off the table entirely!! but to me his skill level w brass in particular makes it equally likely he’s just copying what he’s seen and what he’s been told by professionals

AGAIN tho ling ling insurance i’m a pianist and woodwind player i’m not an expert in anything brass this is all just speculation etc etc etc

re: seb playing trombone/an instrument in general, bc i'm vaguely aware that's been a thing just hearing about seblr thru the grapevine.. it's a no from me! i'm not a band kid truther. reasons why below the cut ehehe

TL;DR: he may have been a flutist (doubtful but no real evidence otherwise) or a percussionist if he was a concert band kid, also zero evidence on whether he can play violin/strings or piano, but i'm skeptical about his woodwind and brass skills. absolutely happy to be proven wrong tho

prefacing this w saying i main piano and don't play a lot of these instruments but i've also been playing in bands for 10 yrs now so i've osmosis-ed a bit

[figure 1 - woodwinds] absolutely CANNOT hold a sax, so that's sax, clarinet, oboe, and other similarly held instruments out the window. embarrassing bc nico is closer to holding it correctly. palm keys mean palm on the keys 😭 i will say flute is still on the table bc it's just so wildly different in terms of embouchure n how u hold it, but as a flutist i doubt it bc the fingerings are scarily similar between the two instruments lol

[figures 2 & 3 - brass] see like this is so compelling to me bc if the audio is right then he's growling and that is NOT. something a beginner trumpet player should be able to do. like that is not the sound a trumpet makes naturally when u just start out and when u buzz. so EITHER it's post-prod audio dubbing with the actual trumpeter (most likely case if we look at the other ferrari fun vids in this time) OR in the span of the video production itself, seb learned not only how to buzz but how to growl, OR he already knew. but looking at the visual evidence, he is... rlly tense/stiff here. compare to like a real trumpet player, and unless he's playing 8 ledger lines above the staff or doing insane shit like this, i think most realistically he's just making spitting sounds or occasionally honking out some of the c harmonics series. but ahhh ling ling insurance i don't play trumpet i am only friends with trumpet players etc etc

and for the french horn--i mean. canskjfdfsnk a) that's like the textbook definition of how to not hold it b) embouchure isn't right c) he looks like he's going to break his neck 😭

[figures 4 & 5 - percussion] from my limited knowledge im like 67% sure that he's at least holding the drum sticks correctly, though his pointer fingers poking out are a liiiiil sus. it'd be slightly more convincing if there wasn't also footage of him not rlly doing anything creative w/ them. actually the 2015 one isn't too bad watching it again lol. i will however say that the way he shakes the tambourine between hitting w/ the heel of his palm is indicative of either someone who has seen someone play tambourine or someone who has played the tambourine, bc an absolute noob would just hold it and smack it with their palm

[figure 5 - plucked strings] if he played guitar on the regular like this he'd injure himself. also like, video footage of him being awful at it. and judging by the way he tries to strum i don't think he's a secret bass player either, rip sebastian fucking vettel

anyway in conclusion: jury's out on whether he can play flute or piano or string instruments, and percussion might be a stretch but. unless otherwise proven they're definitely possible.
