What’s your opinion about the overuse of fans saying a character (or relationship) is manipulative or toxic?

For example in TSITP (and I am so sorry to bring it up it’s the only example I could think of rn as I somehow got them on my TikTok FYP recently but barely finished season 2) ppl who are “Team Conrad” say Jeremiah is manipulative and tried to use his mothers death to make Belly feel bad for him even though he knows Belly and Conrad love each other and ppl who are “Team Jeremiah” say Conrad is toxic for not talking about his feelings and putting it all on Belly (which you’ve spoken l ad nauseam about Conrad not deserving being called toxic) I flip flop between Jeremiah and Conrad bc I think they’re both equally ridiculous and I’m not significantly pulled one way or the other, I would only say I’m “Team Conrad” because that’s clearly where the narrative is…

But anyway I’m just here thinking these are really big words for how little that actually happened and that it feels like people are throwing around these terms that have meaning and real consequences when sometimes you just like a character or another relationship more and it seems to be happening more and more to the point where these words no longer have meaning and can’t even be used to describe actual manipulation or toxic behavior bc no one actually knows what they mean anymore

I got so irritated with how much the word 'toxic' is thrown around in fandoms that for a while my blog header was

and for something like TSITP, the issue is also that the writing is terrible because narratively speaking, Conrad is meant to be toxic, that's why there's all this dialogue around it so viewers talking about how he's toxic is like OK because he's supposed to be but the problem is that the show didn't deliver on that so it's just really weird to watch Belly act insane about a boy who was quiet at prom and then at least for me, she's the one who comes out looking toxic, way more toxic than she should be because why are you going around crying and screaming about how he dumped you at prom when you literally were the one who dumped him. Like, canonically, in the script, it was you. So TSITP is just a mess.

But also, if a ship has an argument, if someone in the ship has a boundary, if they use a certain word then people go on and on about them being toxic, like I remember me and an anon had a back-and-forth about Dawson's Creek because Pacey would talk about how Andie is such an amazing woman and he would wax poetic about how she saved his life and she was the best thing to ever happen to him and the anon effectively spoke about how him referring to her as a woman when she was a girl is toxic (even though they're the same age) and how his declarations were toxic and I was like, really? In the context of the show and his behaviour? How?

And it was the same thing when I would talk about Dan in Gossip Girl where I would be like, is this toxic or is Dan just establishing boundaries?

and then you know all the stuff with Stefan etc.
