Michelle hadn’t planned on going up to the attic. She was home for the weekend to help her parents downsize, and the hours had been spent sifting through endless piles of old books, worn-out furniture, and dusty photo albums. But then she noticed a small, inconspicuous box in the corner, half-buried beneath a stack of old holiday decorations. She pulled it out, brushing off the years that had settled on top, and gasped when she opened the lid.

Inside were dozens of vinyl records, their covers faded but still colorful, each one bearing the slight curve of something well-loved. She gingerly pulled out the first record, the album art adorned with vibrant, swirling patterns from the ’70s, and felt a warmth she hadn’t expected. These were her parents’ records—the ones that had filled their home when she was little, the ones she hadn’t thought about in years.

She brought the box downstairs, carefully stacking the records by the old turntable in the living room. After dusting off the player and fiddling with the needle, she set the first record in place. When she lowered the arm, the room was filled with the crackle and pop of a sound that felt almost alive.

The folk record her mother used to hum along to while cooking dinner, her voice blending seamlessly with the melody. She could practically smell the garlic and onions simmering on the stove.

One song, a soft ballad she didn’t recognize, tugged at her heart in a way she couldn’t explain. She didn’t remember ever hearing it, but it felt deeply familiar. Maybe she had listened to it as a baby, held close by her mother, or maybe it was just the sound of warmth and comfort that reminded her of home.

The music filled the house, curling around her like an embrace, and she realized how much she had missed it. Life had pulled her away from these sounds, each year stretching further from the girl who had danced in the living room. Work had taken priority, and evenings were spent in silence or drowned out by television noise. She hadn’t made space for music in a long time.

As the last notes faded, Michelle sat in silence, the warmth of the past blending into the present. The music hadn’t changed; it was still here, waiting patiently for her to return to it. She made a promise to herself then: to fill her life with the sounds that had shaped her, to let music reconnect her to who she had been, and to who she could still become.

Carefully, she slid the next record from its sleeve, ready to let the music play on.
