Found your work. You inspired me to take another shot at technical art and graphics programming. Do you recommend any specific resources for getting started and beyond?
Thanks so much! Really glad I could inspire you to do that bc graphics and tech art things are so much fun :D
(Also sorry for the late response. I've been a bit busy and was also thinking about how I wanted to format this)
I'm mostly self taught with a lot of stuff and have done lots of research on a per-project basis, but Acerola and Freya Holmer are two of my favorite channels for learning graphics or technical art things. Shadertoy is also an amazing resource to not only create and view other's shaders, but learn about algorithms and see how people do things!
While I don't have many general resources. I'll steal these resources for graphics programming that Acerola shared in his discord server:
For getting started with graphics engine development: DX11: https://www.rastertek.com/tutdx11s3.html OpenGL: https://learnopengl.com/ DX12: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/direct3d12/directx-12-programming-guide Vulkan: https://vulkan-tutorial.com/
For getting started with shaders: catlikecoding: https://catlikecoding.com/unity/tutorials/rendering/ the book of shaders: https://thebookofshaders.com/ daniel ilett's image effects series: https://danielilett.com/2019-04-24-tut1-intro-smo/
For getting started with compute shaders: Kyle Halladay: http://kylehalladay.com/blog/tutorial/2014/06/27/Compute-Shaders-Are-Nifty.html Ronja: https://www.ronja-tutorials.com/post/050-compute-shader/ Three Eyed Games (this one teaches ray tracing AND compute shaders, what a bargain!): http://three-eyed-games.com/2018/05/03/gpu-ray-tracing-in-unity-part-1/
I also wanted to talk a little bit about I do research for projects!
A lot of my proficiency in shaders just comes from practice and slowly building a better understanding of how to best utilize the tools at my disposal, almost like each project is solving a puzzle and I want to find the most optimal solution I can come up with.
This is definitely easier said than done and while a lot of my proficiency comes from just doodling around with projects and practicing, I understand that "just practice more lol" is a boring and kinda unhelpful answer. When it comes to projects like my lighting engine, I came up with a lot of the algorithm stuff myself, but there were certainly lots of details that I learned about from past projects and research like ray marching (calculating the ray intersection of a distance function) and I learned about the jump flood algorithm from a tech artist friend (calculating distance functions from textures)
Each new algorithm you learn in various projects ends up being another tool in your toolbox, and each project becomes a combination of researching new tools and applying the tools you've learned in the past.
One last example. I made a Chladni plate simulation in blender (that thing where you put sand on a metal plate and play noises and it makes patterns) and it started with me researching and looking up chladni plates, I watched youtube videos related to why the sand forms the patterns it does, which ended up being due to how the sound waves displaced the plane. I googled some more and found the actual equation that represents it, and used it to simulate particle motion.
Figure out some projects you want to do and just do some googling or ask for help in game dev discord servers or whatever. Lot's of research on a per-project basis is honestly how you'll learn the most imo :3

Tut 1 Assignment: Responding to gallery visits
Smac Gallery
Wallen Mapondera’s Chirema Chine Mazano Chinotamba Chakazendama Madziro:
Chirema Chine Mazano Chinotamba Chakazendama Madziro, a solo show by Wallen Mapondera, speaks to a way of surviving through creative solutions (which the Shona phrase roughly translates to). Mapondera draws on Zimbabwe, his home country and a place known for its poverty, as a starting point to his work. He emphasises these concepts through his material choice, found objects, which he constructs into works of are. Thus creating something of meaning out of nothing.
Mapondera’s choice of material can be seen to have strong connotations  to the context of the work, such as the use of the bed base within Nhereka Nhereka. The semiotics of a bed points to notions of the home (safety and shelter) however within the context  of the work’s wheel barrow like structure the bed’s meaning shifts. In reference to Zimbabwe’s economic collapse in 2000, Mapondera creates Nhereka Nhereka to represent an idea of informal settlements. Zimbabwe’s government created a  “clean-up campaign” known as  ‘Operation Murambatsvina’ (Operation Restore Order) which carried out the forced removal of  informal spaces, thus leaving many citizens to survive off of what they could find (Smac 2020: online). Maponder’s use of the bed base also shifts the viewer’s experience of scale within the space. A bed is designed to accommodate the size of a person and within the work Nhereka Nhereka I find it brings a sense of people (besides the audience and the artist) into the space. A sense of who were the people affected, and are still currently feeling the affects, by Zimbabwe’s economic crisis.

To Focus back on the titling, specifically the title of the show, Chirema Chine Mazano Chinotamba Chakazendama Madziro, there seems to be a clear decision to use a non-english language. This affects a large percentage of the audience’s interpretation of the show thus drawing their attention to the inaccessibility and accessibility of language, specifically the English language which has a strong hegemonic history. The titling draws the audience into the headspace of Mapondera which allows them to reflexively acknowledge their own economical and social position within the exhibition space.

Igshaan Adam’s stukkinne stories
and Sabelo Mlangeni’s The Royal House of Allure:
Though it is not a group show, stukkinne stories by Igshaan Adams and The Royal House of Allure by Sabelo Mlangeni are curated together to bring a balanced atmosphere to the work. The two shows speak to each other and although Adams and Mlangeni use different mediums their subject matter lie within the same conceptual terrain. The two artists’ practices are heavily influenced by their own identities, both being queer men of colour. Within this exhibiton, Adams and Mlangeni address their own experiences of queerness within community.
Mlangeni’s work focuses on intimate moments within these communities - a look into the everyday lives of identities within South Africa. In his exhibition, Mlangeni uses photography (mostly black and white) to explore safe spaces for the queer community in Lagos, a city known for its discrimination. He specifically investigates The Royal House of Allure, a safe house which encourages queer expression. The idea of home and family can be a difficult topic for queer people, specifically those that come from conservative backgrounds. One is often pushed to find a new home or chosen family which allows for the “space to construct a sense of self through artistic practices within beauty, fashion and music”. (blank projects 2020: online). Adams’ and Mlangeni’s work has overlapping conceptual meaning, however Adams’ explores his own experiences with sexuality, race and religion through through his tapestry-like structures. He challenges his intersectionality by drawing on the iconography of Islam to craft his delicate structures. His work speaks to both the organic forms found within nature and the semiotics of a domestic environment.
Although Mlangeni’s chose a more flat medium compared to Adam’s organic structures his photographs are not static. They depict the movement and unconstrained nature of intimacy. An intimacy which demonstrates trust and safety, creating a space for self growth through expression. Where Mlangeni uses people as his subject matter to investigate queer communities within domestic spaces Adams’ uses symbolism. Stukkinne stories uses abstract forms to represent this domesticity, such as the carpet or the chair. The entangled movement of Adams’ work Worstel embodies the notion of conflict. The organic forms envelop the metal structure, creating an internal conflict-possibly one of identity or tradition. Comparably,  Mlangeni’s work Pulling off James Brown's Skinny Flowery Pants (Icon Matheu, Makeup artist Akanbi Ade) depicts the entanglement of figures, though this image exudes trust and love- an acceptance of identity.

By combining these two exhibitions, Adams’ and Mlangeni’s different perspectives and experiences of intersectionality speak to each other. Their abstract and realistic depictions of these spaces balance each other out to create an immersive experience for the audience. It creates a sense of shared knowledge. A documentation of those who challenge their own internal and external conflicts.
These two exhibitions (combined with the thin, pink fabric covering the windows) create an atmosphere of the home. Together they challenge the narrative of a home and what it means to feel safe within one's community.

TUT Session 1: Gallery Visits
SMAC Gallery
The show on at SMAC was by Wallen Mapondera and was titled “Chirema Chine Mazano Chinotamba Chakazendama”. The body of work was about the various ways the subaltern navigate through hardships and use creative solutions as survival tactics. It looks to packaging as a tool for survival in an economically depressed country, the artists home, Zimbabwe.
In my opinion it was the show with the most energy and movement. As you walked in you heard the sound of a crowd of people or a busy street coming from the corner of the room. It really set a tone the moment you came into the space. There were many artworks in which you could walk around and see a 360 degree view. This made the space seem like more of an installation instead of just a bunch of separate artworks in a room. The sound located the space and made you feel as if you were experiencing the sound as opposed to being involved with the sound. I really liked how it was used and placed, where it felt attached to one of the works, but also detached. The works were all made of recycled materials, found objects and any ‘excess’ from the artist.
I found the body of work most exciting and really liked the fact that the works were all made from ‘excess’ and recyclable material. I also loved the organic shapes and textures within the work.
Blank Projects Gallery
The show at Blank was two solo shows by two artists but the work was merged, which sounded strange but seemed to visually work out well in my opinion. The shows were by Igshaan Adams, ‘Stukinne Stories’ and Sabelo Mlangenis ‘The Royal House of Allure’. The works made a beautiful pair and their subject matter seemed to bounce off of their own experiences as queer POC men.
However, I was most drawn to Igshaan Adams attention to colour and cosmologies throughout his sculptures in this show, These particular sculptures seemed to have such strong presences because of the very particular colours used as a ‘base’ combined with the beading, weaving and materials ever so carefully picked out.
What I was most drawn to in the show, funnily enough, was the fact that Igshaan placed thin pink veils over all of the windows in the room. One was in the catalogue and titled ‘Veil’ and I found it to bring about such a soft and delicate feel into the building itself, amongst the work. I’m not sure if Igshaan was doing this to play with light or set a mood but I found it really beautiful and it stood out to me a lot.
Stevenson
Stevenson gallery was the least interesting exhibition. It was ‘Bilongue’ by Barthélémy Toguo. The body of work speaks of characters struggling against the grain, haunted by the spectre of desperation and material want, as well as a life of the post-colony punctuated by blinding beauty and joy. There was a lot of text, one could not exactly tell where one part starts and one ends. There was a range of portraits from hand drawn ones to wood carvings. The wood carvings interested me the most but only for a short while until I got bored.
I did, however, really love the choice of blue/purple that was used throughout the exhibition. Just as a colour on its own, it worked out really well. The works were remnant of note taking because of the writing all around the edges which I found interesting.
I think this exhibition had a strong subject matter but it felt unresolved to me which Is why I feel quite a lot less drawn to it.
However, I think the bodies of work in each gallery had a connection in some way.

I wanna know how you made you navigation page 😅 thanks
no problem. here are some good tutorials on how to create and customize pages including navi/tag pages https://yukoki.tumblr.com/tut1#=
you can browse here for navigation page themes if you want something different to your blog theme https://resourcemarket.tumblr.com/tagged/tags
but you have to be careful and not pick any with javascript in it cause it will cause a problem with tumblr and you won't be able to edit (currently a big problem in the community). if you want the same page theme that i use, you can find it here https://pastebin.com/WYeCsyQw
hope this helps

QUESTIONS FOR TUT1:
SMAC
Sound of shouting/terror amoungst torn and broken down looking works - why is it placed in one particular area of the room as opposed to using a ‘surround sound’ sort of way of presenting the sound?
Did the artist purposely make works that are fragile and is it the artists responsibility or is it the galleries responsibility to preserve it? Was this fragility of the work a representation of the fragility of the subject (Zimbabwe)?
The works are life size or larger than the human viewer, what do you think was the purpose of this?
BLANK
Were the veils on each window fairly significant or were they just a play with lighting? There was an artwork titled ‘veil’ of the veil in front of the gallery’s main window. What was the purpose of this?
What was the curatorial reason behind combining two ‘solo shows’ as one show? A photographer & a sculptor?
More 3D sculptures & tapestries from Adams than flat/2D-tapestries. Do you think this is a spurt of growth in the artists practice in any way? Shifting style of presenting the mediums?
STEVENSON
Where did the artist source the writing from? Is it there own?
Where does is start and end? Is it an everlasting cycle of sentences & words?
Who are the people they have carved and drawn portraits of? Why?
