I cannot express into a fully comprehensive english sentence how much I love this movie. I'm not even kidding, I think it's one of my favourite movies... ever! it tops raggedy ann and andy, it tops nimona, it tops deadpool and wolverine, it tops the mario movie, and dare I say my sam and max spinterest may get drowned out because of this movie... I absolutely ADORED all the scenes with shadow and maria! the movies highlighted their relationship perfectly, and I loved how shadow and maria looked up at the stars instead of looking down on earth on the ark because well. yknow. points to the arc-shaped hole in the movie. when she died I kinda felt like that video of that hazbin hotel fan crying over angel dust but um! we don't need to talk about that ^_^

dont even remember where I said that but on god I will deliver. for the sake of simplicity we're sticking with fantasy ttrpg classes/character types, your d&d and pathfinder and related fare. this is probably going to inevitably just turn into "what kind of ttrpg player is each yutag like, to me" but it's all good. let's goooo

Yugi: kind of crazy that we basically have a canon answer for this with Monster World, huh? I love that he played a half-elf, he has huge 'elf and the like' enjoyer vibes. Definite inclination towards spellcasters, "Beast Tamer" makes me easily see him making some kind of ranger or druid character that makes heavy use of magic and animal/monster befriending. Preps pretty thoroughly, gives character a pretty substantial amount of lore and backstory, probably has DMing experience so he always tries to be respectful to the gamemaster and what theyre trying to do (providing it's not. trying to kill you with demon magic) and likes to tie his own character into the lore of the world as best he can. Spitballs character ideas with Atem. (You know Atem's characters have Dense backstory and are roleplayed with the immense gravity of an oscar-winning drama.)

Jaden: ZERO prep, just decided to join the game two hours ago and maybe skimmed the rulebook at most. Whatever class he plays he's playing that thing fast and loose and way sillier than the DM anticipated for this game. Warrior/monk/physical fighter build type enjoyer, plays a furry race like a tabaxi cuz they Look Cool and Fun, definitely shows up with a jokey joke character named Boots McScoots or something that everyone gets attached to bigly by the end. Kind of player just happy to be having fun with his friends ^_^ *inadvertedly blowing up every possible plan the DM had in mind for this campaign* (Yubel writes a five page doc of insane traumatic backstory if given the chance to make a character themself)

Yusei: puts a lot of thought and care into his character, even if they're ultimately a little bit of a self-insert (hey aint nothin wrong with that.) Probably gravitates towards something like an artificer, wizard, or a paladin, firmly something in the 'good' end of the morality spectrum. Could get really into complicated magic systems I feel; reads over spell lists and carefully picks out what he thinks could be the most beneficial for the upcoming situations. A bit shy wrt RPing his character, no silly voices or anything, but plays his character with so much heart they feel real and lived in right out the gate. I feel like he could really vibe with playing a dwarf, dont @ me

Yuma: Rolls up with a big shiny Super Cool Overpowered character he loaded way too many bells and whistles onto despite being told REPEATEDLY that everyone was starting at level 1 and is subsequently crumbling into little pieces over having to scale them waaaay down. Absolute warrior/fighter preference, you look me in the eyes and you tell me Yuma has the attention span or desire to sit and do complicated magic management he wants to swing cool sword and fight bad guy. Has trouble picking what sort of fantasy race to play and ends up with, like, a gnome. Gets really into the game and playing his character, there's probably not a Huge amount of deep backstory to them and probably has poor group synergy but he's giving it his 110%. (Astral is doing some insane dual-class magic and math heavy character he thinks about very much outside of the game, and is always tweaking them and excited to bring them to life.)

Yuya: I think Yuya's the only yutag I could see actually trying to play a more evil-aligned character--I don't know if he'd actually be able to RP them well, but I think he'd like the idea of playing a character very Unlike Himself. Gets a little caught up trying to come up with a 'cool' enough backstory and ends up with something kind of barebones. Probably a little scattered actually at the table, but you know his character is Loud and Full of Personality. It's bard or bust with this kid, cmon now. I feel like he's playing either a twinky whimsical elf or a dragonborn he thought really really hard about the design of. (re: the other yuboys: Yuto's character has 25 pages of lore and backstory that is full of tragedy and vengeance and redemption. Yugo's playing some funnyguy he came up with in ten minutes. Yuri makes some big show out of implying he's just going to play a violent freak that's here to dissemble the DM's entire campaign but then he gets genuinely caught up in a political intrigue sideplot and starts conspiring with the DM for a grand epic twist with his character)

Yusaku: now THIS is the guy who spent hours quietly researching the best subclasses and spells and builds for whatever particular party his character is meant to slot into; every choice he makes for his character is much-deliberated and carefully chosen. Shows up at the table with a well-balanced human paladin/similar swordwielder with spell slots on deck. Doesn't really RP per say, but definitely slips into the Playmaker vocal range when announcing choices and actions, and his character has such a powerful cool as fuck aura it's almost a little intimidating to play alongside them at first. His character is selfless does nothing out of malice because why wouldn't it be? That's his natural first choice. (Ai razzes yusaku nonstopt for playing the NERD ROLEPLAY FANTASY game for NERDSSSS but if you sat him down in a oneshot he'd bust out his tumblr sexyman-ass flamboyant half-elf half-tiefling bard (who's also a vampire) character that he DEFINITELY did NOT make months ago waiting for the chance to play him, noooo no sirree)

My inability to be normal about the Froakie line (going strong since I was 13 and and only observing the pokémon franchise from the sidelines*) aside, I'm so obsessed with the bond phenomenon as a gimmick because it gives you so many opportunities for tinkering with character design - who the hell wouldn't want to be matchy matchy with their pokémon buddy? Plus there's an angle which I like to explore in my silly little daydreams: how deep does it go? Is it like drifting in Pacific Rim? Can you get telepathy out of it? A bleed-over effect of habits, memories, mannerisms? I have a whole goddamn pokémon journey novelisation of my Y run in my head with the battle bond included because it's just such a fascinating gimmick to tinker with.

(*I watched some of the original anime as a kid, had a brief dalliance with gen 4 games and anime and pokémon ranger, before being grabbed by the fucking throat by a cute little blue bubble froggy in 2013 and gradually dragged into the franchise proper. I only got a 3ds last year (2013-18 were a bit of a wild time for me and 18-22 were uni hell) but I swear to god the moment I opened pokémon Y and found my Froakie buddy looking at me I was fucking done for. So yeah, the Froakie line is, in fact, responsible for me getting into pokémon properly. Late, maybe, but better late than never!)

Given the fact that mechanic-wise it's a third ability, it could be argued to be genetic on the frog's side, but more of a potential/compatibility thing on the human side. If it's genetic, is it a result of higher empathy? Of a slightly less stable genetic makeup or a glitch of the evolution mechanism? How common is it? For all we know it could be more common but dormant, lacking a suitable trainer. According to that one drawing from the anime (ninja village, lore drop about the bond phenomenon) bonded Gren just looks like that (in addition to the Ash-Gren sprite in Sun/Moon retaining these features even away from Ash), so from a Watsonian perspective it seems that anime Gren just happened to meet a kid whose aesthetic matches his bonded form. That said, why not tweak it a bit? Why not see if the phenomenon also manifests in other pokémon? I'm still baffled that there's so little art of bonded trainer and 'mon duo because of all the character customisation you can do. One would think it's a fun idea to make drawing challenges etc of, like designing megas for random pokémon.

Also Gren should've beaten Alain's Charizard but they were saving up Ash's league win for his pen/ultimate seasons and this is a hill I'm ready to kill on. My Gren absolutely demolished Olympia's gym while 10 levels underleveled with just a night slash (not my fault then gen 6 gym leaders are pushovers) so a bonded, sufficiently trained Gren with a (game mechanic) affection boost and buff to water shuriken, a super effective STAB move it has high stats for, should've Deus Ex(yz) Machina'd the lizard into the ground.

Rumble of Ancient Times 18650 Mod

So first this happened...

Feckin went and caught covid again, this time I guess it was the latest strain. Walk in the park compared to when I caught the Omicron variant, that sucked balls. But I had a high fever that lasted for four and a half freakin days, peaking at 39.9ºC, that would go down to 38ºC when I took the fever reducer meds, then shoot right back up to over 39º once the meds stopped working. It's already almost two weeks later and I'm still wrecked, feel like I've been steamrollered. Oof. But before that was going on I obtained this:

The Rumble of Ancient Times. But hold on a sec, something looks different, and not just the groovy colored knob caps from Thonk (those are the shit by the way, they work on the Aira compact and Korg Volca series too). What's that peeking out at the lower left? A USB-C PORT? What mischief is this?! Mwuhahahaha. Yeah so originally it's powered by four triple-A batteries in a holder that has no lid, just exposed to the elements on the bottom side, and I dunno, something about that didn't sit well with me. I was thinking I could power it off a small USB-C smartphone battery brick, but no matter what I did I couldn't get it to power on, then I remembered that those only put out +5V, d'oh! So I had a peep around Jamazon, and found this:

SUPER feckin small thing, that. Like the size of my thumbnail plus a few mm. So what the thing is, is a Li-ion Li-po charger PLUS a step-up transformer in a wee package there. I think it will actually go all the way up to +24V. As it was, I soldered it up according to the diagram there on Jamazon, and after charging an 18650 successfully, feckin A right skippy this shit just might work man! I wired it up to a multimeter to test output voltage, then tweaked the wee trimmer to get +6V output. Then I jimmied the power leads onto the RoAT and crossed my fingers and said three Hail Satans and threw the switch and presto! it feckin worked! SO stoked. 18650s are cheap as balls, and this whole setup is taller but not so much larger than the original configuration, have a look:

I used rather thick 3M VHB super super extra strong double-sided tape to hold the two down, then obtained 25mm hexagonal brass M3 standoff leggiwegs and put it all together, as you can see in the photo second from top. Jamazon again. Well it's either them or order from Kyohritsu and pay almost the same amount but with Jamazon the stuff arrives the next day (or same day depending on the time I place the order). Anyway...

This is what it originally looked like. The battery holder is pretty sturdy and has a goddam good grip on the batteries but still... Hmmmm.

This is the schleprock special in place. I coulda trimmed the wiring a bit but at this point I was like let's just be done with this already. And the awesomesauceiest thing about it is NO NOISE from the battery. This is something that I was super worried about, given that I was going to power the thing with a non-standard power source, but in the end it all worked out fine and YAY ME! Oh I suppose I should mention cost. The batteries were the most expensive part at about ¥2000 for two, because I chose the made in Japan option. For five of the wee USB-C charging slash step up boards plus battery socket/holders it was ¥1399. So to me it felt like $34 even though the exchange rate is ridiculous and the yen is getting its arse beaten senseless right now. Feck. Yeah so if there's anyone out there with one of these thinking ya know I dunno about those batteries... this is an easy to do mod. I don't know how long the battery will hold out for between charges, but seeing as the circuit on the RoAT probably doesn't eat current, I imagine I could go a month or so between charges. This will also work with the flat 3.7V Li-Po batteries by the way. That would yield a lower profile and give a smaller overall device to mess with. Just have to watch out for the mAh value and make sure it's above 3000. Might mess with that in the future. Hmmmm. Something else I did...

Barely visible.. The LED frequency and the shutter speed were not playing nicely with each other. I changed out the Solo and Mute LEDs on a Korg Nanokontrol, to white and yellow respectively, just because. I got a 1010music blue box digital mixer and found out you can use class compliant USB control surfaces and was like well shit. So there you go. The LEDs were SMD but since getting that SMD desolderer thingy off AliExpress, doing work like this has become quite easy. It's still a pain to solder LEDs the size of dust motes though. Jeeezus those things are feckin small.
