A BOOK WITHOUT DRAGONS BY OLIVIA BERRIER REVIEW

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me a digital copy of the book for review.

Reading a book that switches not only perspectives but also tenses is not my idea of a great read but the author manages to convince me otherwise. The writing in this book is straightforward and honest so that there is very little confusion. The main protagonists face problems that one can easily relate to or has seen around them often enough. But still the characters manage to be original enough and everything is tied together neatly in the end. The book is short and it fits the concept of the story; an exploration of human nature and the perspectives that bind us together and what would happen if we changed the way we perceive certain elements of the world around us. Some things in the book might seem a little strange but these are minor details. The story is kind of like a short science fiction TV show that manages to find the right balance between violence and happy endings. The concept behind the narrative is alluring and it felt like an accurate assessment of the human condition. I would be excited to read more of the author’s work.

Tôi đã luôn là người hay bị ám ảnh quá khứ, vì biết bản thân như vậy, nên tôi luôn muốn sống thực sự tử tế và đáng sống ở trong hiện tại.

Đây sẽ là một bài viết mang một màu flashback đầy nắng.

Giá như có thể quay lại thời gian trước đây, những năm đầu của ngày tháng Đại học, khi chúng tôi còn đc ngồi ở phòng dọc hành lang. Khi nắng ở ngoài hiên có chút rọi vào cửa sổ. Những ngày đó chưa có điều hoà, chỉ có tiếng quạt quay mòng mòng trên đầu chúng tôi. Đó là những giờ học Reading, Writing, Listening và Speaking. Đó là những ngày tôi còn giữ cẩn thận quyển take note mỗi khi học nghe. Đó là những ngày thầy Nghĩa cho coi video để có kĩ năng nghe tốt hơn. Đó là những ngày mà chỉ có lớp TA1.04 trong một căn phòng.

Giá như có thể quay lại thời gian trước đây, những ngày tháng học cấp 3. Thời ấy tôi còn đi cái xe đạp cào cào có một không hai. Xe đạp của tôi có 3 gióng, ở Hải Phòng ko có chiếc nào giống nthe, tôi cảm thấy vừa kiêu hãnh lại vừa chẳng sợ nhầm với xe khác. Ở Ngô Quyền thì hàng ngàn kỉ niệm ấy chứ. Hồi ấy, bạn bè tôi khác lắm, haha, nhìn chúng nó thời ấy chẳng ai tưởng tượng nổi chúng nó sẽ như ngày hôm nay, và nhìn chúng nó hôm nay cũng không ai biết ngày trước nó ntn. A11 là cái lớp nghịch nhất trong 3 lớp khối D ý chứ, và tôi lại may mắn là một thành viên trong cái nhóm nghịch bựa đấy =]] Gội đầu nhau dưới cái vòi xả từ nóc nhà xuống, bẩn vchg mà cũng nghĩ ra đc, rồi bế nhau vào thùng rác, quăng dép lên cây, kéo nhau mài quần dưới sàn... Đó là những ngày hè. Còn mùa đông thì lớp học của chúng tôi ít hoạt động hơn nhiều. Những ngày rét thì chỉ đút tay vào túi áo đồng phục ngồi kể chuyện thôi. Bà Ly thời đó thì mặt trơ trán bóng, cái mái mỏng mỏng vuốt sang một bên để lộ vầng trán bác Hồ. Bà ý chăm học lắm, còn sợ vi phạm nội quy các thứ, ngoan vđ. Khéo chơi với mình mới hư thêm =]] Tôi vẫn nhớ cái dáng đứng nói chuyện giật giật của nó :)) xong cái răng khểnh của nó thời đấy. Nó hay dỗi tôi lắm, cái méo gì cũng dỗi đc, chỉ cần ko theo ý nó mà quá đà là nó dỗi luôn. Xong nó quay mặt mẹ đi ko thèm nói chuyện với mình cơ. Hồi đó , à không phải hồi đó mà là đến tận bây giờ , tôi là người dễ xúc động, dễ mau nước mắt. Cãi nhau với nó là vào lớp úp mặt xuống bàn khóc như mưa đc luôn ấy. Kỉ lục dỗi nhau lâu nhất là mùa xuân hồi học lớp 12, tôi chỉ trêu nó là mặc áo độn à, xong nó dỗi cmn tôi. Tôi ấm ức vailon vì trêu nthe cũng dỗi, trong giờ học thêm Văn tôi lại rưng rưng khóc đến mức cô Đông (gv dạy Văn) phải hỏi em làm sao thế P =]] Lần này thì tôi qđịnh méo xin lỗi và mở lời trước nữa xem nó có thèm làm lành với tôi ko. Và đương nhiên là méo :) Tôi thất vọng vl. Tôi đã dành cả 2 tháng dỗi nhau đó, để nghĩ. Lúc đầu là tôi bực, tôi giận, vì ko hiểu câu đùa ấy có gì mà quá đà đến mức nó phải dỗi tôi, thêm nữa là nó lại chẳng bao giờ thèm xin lỗi tôi khi hai đứa dỗi nhau. Sau đó là tới thất vọng, vì ko ngờ chơi với nhau 3 năm nthe mà vì một câu đùa xamlon lại kết thúc tình bạn, và vì nhận ra tôi ko quan trọng bằng cái việc nó xuống nước xin lỗi tôi. 2 tháng ấy khá là chán, vì ngày nào cũng đi học, nhưng lại tránh mặt nhau. Cả lớp có liên hoan, chơi này nọ, cũng chẳng vui vì hai đứa ko thèm nói chuyện rồi tránh mặt. Đến gần Tết thì anh bạn Dương mới làm một màn kịch vô cùng chuyên nghiệp là nhờ một bạn (tôi và Dương đều quen) ở lớp bên cạnh đưa cho tôi một cái phong thư. Tôi mở ra thì là một loạt ảnh của tôi với Ly cùng với mấy gói dầu gội đầu (cho bà Ly vì đầu bà ý nổi tiếng bết =]]) cùng dòng chữ “hai bạn đừng dỗi nhau nữa”. Quả đấy có cố làm mặt ngầu cũng ko thể ko bật cười :))) thế là từ hôm ý tôi vs con nhỏ Ly cũng cải thiện, mở lời với nhau đôi chút và chơi lại với nhau. Cấp 3 của tôi ko chỉ tràn đầy kỉ niệm của mấy đứa học cùng lớp, mà còn là mấy anh trai ở tầng 2. Lớp nào tôi cũng chơi một tý, và chúng bạn tự nhận bạn Hoàng Hiếu là crush của tôi nữa :)) tôi cũng khs??? Chắc có lẽ là vì mấy lần tôi trêu bạn ý đẹp trai, nhưng vì hồi ý có người yêu bên Hồng Bàng nên năm tháng cấp 3 của tôi trôi qua khá êm đềm và đẹp đẽ, chung thuỷ với 1 tình yêu 2 năm =]]

Đó là hai quãng thời gian tôi muốn quay lại nhất, còn lại, với danh sách người cũ dài ngoằng, tất nhiên cũng có khoảng thời gian đẹp và yên bình mà ta yêu mến. Nhưng thiết nghĩ, tất cả mọi cơ duyên đã đều được sắp đặt, người cũ, dù có kỉ niệm đẹp hay xấu, dù có yêu thật hay chỉ là rung động, thì cũng đã là chuyện của quá khứ. Đôi khi tôi đã ước đc xoá đi tất cả những kí ức tệ hại kinh tởm của bản thân trong quá khứ, nhưng tất nhiên là ko thể, nên giờ đây, phải cố gắng hơn, nghiêm khắc với bản thân hơn, để ko tạo ra những kỉ niệm kinh hoàng nữa. Refresh lại cuộc sống, hướng tới cái tốt đẹp hơn, âu cũng là vì tôi muốn tự yêu bản thân mình hơn

Vuelvo para dar una buena noticia. 📰 ¡Ya queda menos! 🎉 Solo me queda un examen de esta primera convocatoria, que es el miércoles y es de lingüística. Me da un poco de miedo 😱 porque sé hacer la práctica pero no sé explicarlo con palabras adecuadas, sino con mi vocabulario de estudio. . Llevo todo el día destrozada de cansancio así que, para hacerlo más ameno... ¡Fiesta del color en los apuntes de repaso de lingüística! 🎨 . Hoy he hecho el examen de latín vulgar y me ha dejado destrozada... He escrito 11 hojas de examen creo que es en el que más he escrito de toda mi vida! Esperemos que sirva para algo... El profesor que me da esta asignatura también me da tradición literaria clásica, de la que ya hice el examen y suspendí con un 4.5,ya os contaré por qué mañana. 🖋 🗒 📚 . En fin... En resumen: me quedan dos exámenes, el miércoles de lingüística y el día 19 de tradición. Aunque dude y me entre el miedo, sé que es solo cansancio y que yo puedo con todo 💪. Y, ¿sabéis qué?
