Blog - 6: Feedback and Creating an Underwater Scene in Unreal Engine

Introduction
In this blog, I explore how we brought our 360 dome project to life, featuring an underwater submarine scene transitioning into space. We'll discuss how we planned the underwater scene in Unreal Engine and the challenges we faced in creating realistic water effects.
Reference and Planning
Before starting, we did thorough research and collected references to make sure our underwater scene was authentic. We studied underwater photos, documentaries, and marine life to capture the essence of the ocean. We also carefully planned the scene's layout, focusing on lighting, composition, and scale to create a visually stunning environment.




Problems and Solutions
In Unreal Engine, one of our biggest challenges was making water look realistic. It was tough to get the natural movement right, needing advanced shaders, particle systems, and physics simulations. We also had to make sure the scene ran smoothly in the 360-degree environment. To make realistic water effects, we used karim aboushousha UE5:Underwater Blueprint V2 and some megascane assets to bring life to the scene. We used particle systems for underwater currents, fish, dust, and bubbles that make the underwater scene more realistic.
Collaborative Efforts
Making the underwater scene was a team effort. We worked together, using our skills in 3D modeling, texturing, and animation. With good communication and teamwork, we tackled technical challenges and brought our vision to life in Unreal Engine.
Conclusion
In conclusion, making the underwater scene in Unreal Engine for our 360-degree dome project was tough but fulfilling. With careful planning, technical skills, and teamwork, we created a beautiful environment that set the tone for our project. We're excited to share the magic of the deep sea and space with our audience, hoping to inspire awe and wonder in everyone who sees it.

Light & Shadows - Cute and Spooky Creature Design Part6
Importing the character into the environment:
The last piece of the puzzle was to add the creature into the environment. Going back to my original idea, I wanted the main source of light to come from the antenna of the creature. To do so, I tried using a point light, however the overall effect looked fake and underwhelming. As a result, I went on and made the texture of the crystal itself being emissive. To make this I had two options: go in Substance Painter, where I designed the texture and add an emission parameter, however this would involve a more complex workflow, with different channels to export.
The easiest method that worked for me was the second one: to add a vector parameter in the emission parameter of the texture inside Unreal Engine5. Doing this, it also allowed me to control and adjust the emission value.
As a result, I managed to obtain a really nice contrast between the dark, eerie forest with the cold ray lights on the background, and the warm light of the crystal.
Rendering the final result was a little bit tricky for me. I wanted to make a small zooming out video and export it as an MP4, however, that is not an option in Unreal5. I did some research and tried to find a solution and I discovered some tutorials such as:

After going through all the steps from the tutorial, I still did not manage to export it as a MP4. It was a more complex process so I may have done something wrong. The main reason I wanted to try and export it as an MP4 was because I wanted to avoid exporting as an PNG sequence, as I did not have any software to put them together.
During the feedback from my peers and teachers, I was told that I can use DaVinci Resolve, which is a free video editing software where I can put the images and export it as an MP4.

For the final render I also added a rim light on the back of the character to outline the body and bring back some of the silhouette that got lost in the darkness.

While I was happy with the features Unreal engine 4 has I wanted to see what the future of this engine offers, so I browsed on the internet about the Engine and found some exciting new features of Unreal Engine 5, found a YouTube video explaining what the future version of this engine can offer, the video named‘ How UNREAL ENGINE 5 Could Change Virtual Reality Games’ by ‘ Virtual Insider ‘
Water:
It is a dynamic system that can be made simply by carving out the environment and the water will also react to the objects making it very easy for the artists to create an environment.
Physics and destruction: The new version of the Unreal engine features a new chaos engine, now the developers can create destructible objects with a click of a button which can be destroyed and the objects will interact with the environment.
Advances particles: Niagra is a new particle system where developers can create complex and visually interesting particle effects easily which will interact with the environment. Can be useful for creating realistic smoke or rain effects that will not clip through objects.
Sky and atmosphere: this will allow you to create a realistic sky and atmosphere, the clouds will be dynamic, and it will be easy to set up and use.
Global illumination system: This new changes to the global illumination system will be a game-changer in the industry, usually the lighting artists have to fake the bounce lights because lighting up a big environment can be taxing to the engine, they have to re-bake every time they made changes to the lighting, with this new technique the engine does all the heavy lifting for you.
