HISTORIA UNIVERSAL - DOMINGO DE BONECHEA - UN VASCO EN LA POLINESIA -

Nacido en Guetaria (Guipúzcoa) en 1723 e hijo de una familia de larga tradición marinera, pasó por la Real Compañía de Guardiamarinas de Cádiz para posteriormente servir como piloto durante siete años, tras los cuales fue nombrado alférez de fragata; cruzó dos veces el Atlántico con la Flota de Indias y tomó parte en la Batalla de Toulon en 1744 . En 1751 es ascendido a teniente de fragata y combate con patente de corso por la costa norteafricana del Mediterráneo. Estuvo en Filipinas y en La Habana hasta que en 1767, ascendido a capitán de fragata, se le encomienda el mando de la Águila (antes Santa María Magdalena), de veintiséis cañones, con base en Montevideo para patrullar aquellas aguas sudamericanas permaneciendo en ellas durante tres años y ser finalmente destinado al puerto peruano de El Callao a desempeñar labores de guardacostas.

Estamos en 1771, y es entonces cuando llegan noticias al virrey Amat de que había británicos en Tahití. Tal acción suponía un gran peligro pues por un lado la isla podía convertirse en una base desde la que los británicos podían atacar el virreinato y por otro quedaba amenazada la isla de San Carlos (Rapa Nui o Pascua).

Así las cosas, y con el fin de “averiguar las maquinaciones de los extranjeros y la situación y estado de los naturales (….) atraer nuevas almas a la religión cristiana y nuevos vasallos al rey”, el virrey de Perú fijaba los objetivos para la expedición rumbo a Tahití de 1772 al mando de la cual y como capitán de fragata Aguila, Amat puso a Domingo Bonechea con orden de recorrer las islas de Pascua – misión que no pudo cumplir- y Tahití. La embarcación partió del puerto de El Callao el 26 de septiembre de 1772 y un mes más tarde comenzaba el avistamiento de las islas. La primera fue Tenere, llamada por los expedicionarios San Simón y San Judas a la cual siguieron San Quintín (Haraiki) – que ya había sido avistada por Bouganville -, Todos los Santos (Anaa) y San Cristóbal (Mehetía), estas dos últimas posiblemente descubiertas con anterioridad por Pedro Fernández de Quirós. Finalmente, la “Aguila” llegó frente a las costas de Tahití a primeros de noviembre.

Bonechea no fue el descubridor de las islas pero sí quien llegó a tomar posesión de las mismas para su rey. El descubrimiento puede atribuirse a otro español, Pedro Fernández de Quirós, si bien la confusa documentación de su expedición no deja muy claro el asunto y puede que incluso la expedición de García Jofre de Loaísa pasara primero por allí. En el siglo XVIII pasaron por ellas el francés Louis-Antoine de Bouganville y los ingleses Wallis y Cook, siendo estos dos últimos los que hicieron saltar las alarmas del virrey Amat.

En la isla permanecieron durante un mes y en ese tiempo los expedicionarios establecieron buenas relaciones de convivencia con los indígenas, lo que les permitió recoger muchos y valiosos datos sobre sus costumbres físicas y políticas. Con los datos geográficos y astronómicos anotados elaboraron un detallado mapa insular, momento en el que la Aguila regresó a El Callao encontrándose con otra isla a la que llamaron Santo Domingo (Moorea). A bordo de la fragata iban cuatro tahitianos que fueron presentados al virrey Amat, aprobando éste el establecimiento de una misión, obligando tal circunstancia a unsegundo viaje de Bonechea, nuevamente al mando de la Aguila. Nuevas islas fueron descubiertas: San Narciso (Tatakoto), Mártires (Tekokoto), San Juan (Hikueru), San Julián (Faaite) y San Blas (Tahanea). El 14 de noviembre llegaron de nuevo a Tahití. Después de que los caciques locales proclamaran su sumisión al rey de España, Boenechea murió en la isla el 26 de enero de 1775.

El Aguila volvió una vez más a Tahití desde El Callao cargado de víveres, pero finalmente se redujo la misión a recoger a los franciscanos que habían dejado en la misión, finalizando España su presencia en la isla.
