trying to word this in a way that isn't hideously regressive and reactionary, but i do think, for me personally at least, the most effective "lady knight" character archetypes and stories are the ones that exist in a setting that at least acknowledges the existence of gender-based oppression/essentialism and patriarchal hegemony. which isn't to say that nobody can or should create art where societal values are more progressive and women are allowed and even encouraged to become knights, but that - to me - exploring what it means to transgress against the established social order in order to become a public figure whose intended purpose is to maintain, protect, and reinforce that same established social order (through violence) is much more interesting.

When I say I really want a Jason adopts tim fic, I don't mean I want him to become a parent at 19 to a teen like 2-4 years younger than him, I want Jason to meet Tim and decide that he wants Tim on his side.

I want Jason to adopt Tim as his Robin, like he decides that he wants to recruit this 15 year old that is some how the smartest and snarkiest person in Gotham. I don't want infantilised tim, I want a sorta Nani and Lilo sibling dynamic, but with a smaller age gap.

Like sure, Jason sees his little brother as some sort of soggy kitten that he must protect, but also a Tim that is very capable of looking after himself.

I want Tim to look at Jason, see Bruce back when he first donned the Cape and traffic light colours. And then in true Tim fashion decide to fix him, B was being too over protective since Red Hood showed up anyways.

Like imagine, Jason meeting Tim instead by accident when he drops in on a drug trade. Tim says some quip that throws him off his game while fighting. Jason basically losing to a very deadly fifteen year old who's not slept in 29 hours, and he thinks 'f it, I like the kid'. Then trying to recruit him consistently until Tim goes 'why tf not'.

i think my favourite horror trope is what i like to call "it gets better before it gets worse". the evil is seemingly defeated. the worst is apparently over. it was tough, and maybe you didn't all make it out in one piece, but you made it. except that you didn't. you're still infected, still marked. you bring the horror with you wherever you go. and there's no timeframe after which you can say you're safe with any certainty. it might lie dormant for years, just waiting for you to turn your back to it long enough to let it find you again. it knows your scent, now. it can hunt you down wherever you go.

we’re introduced to emmrich’s perspective on necromancy—i.e. the hope that it isn’t just a spirit, dead souls do in some way partially return—as one perspective, as a possibility or theory. emmrich himself introduces the topic as “the eternal question” to which there’s no solid answer. so it still permits other characters, and the audience if they so choose, to believe the more standard dragon age lore that necromancy and walking corpses are merely spirits, no souls involved. it’s therefore not lore-breaking. emmrich’s perspective is also one we’ve seen people consider before, for example in dai when discussing with cassandra and leliana whether the divine justinia spirit in the fade was in some way “really her”. so far so good! my problem, however, is that i do believe the more standard dragon age lore on the subject and have never seen anything to change that opinion. because emmrich’s story and abilities are presented basically as if his perspective were true, so i have to deal with the implications all by myself. what’s in that skull? NOT johanna hezenkoss! who’s answering those interrogations and corpse whispers? NOT the people who used to be in those bodies! who’s in there if emmrich becomes a lich? well i go back and forth on this one because the nature of the procedure is murky but there’s a very real possibility in my mind that it’s not emmrich!

Sooooo because I’ve been seeing connections to Bobbys arc in all the Halloween episodes it got me thinking about the costumes from this seasons Halloween episode and how I thought at the time they were meant to be relevant to each characters arc for the season because it’s something the show likes to play on - giving hints through the set and costumes - I just hadn’t figured it out and then didn’t really think on it more because we got Eddie dancing and Buck escaped his dull, uninspiring relationship and I got distracted like the audhder I am!!

Then I saw something on twitter and Bluesky earlier and all the dots connected and I was right - the costumes are all about each characters arc for the season.

Mad scientist Hen - upcoming biohazard arc

Chim as Jason - a serial killer - Maddie getting kidnapped and nearly killed by one! (Which was also why Doug used the name Jason back in s2 - it was a play on the same thing!)

Vampire Bobby - vampires are undead and lore says they sleep in coffins - Bobby is about to be buried alive in a coffin - it’s a play on death and resurrection both catholic and vampiric (proof he won’t die!!)

Werewolf Eddie - transformation and identity - in modern literature and tv/film the werewolf has become connected to the idea of hiding who you are and being othered - and that has been taken up by the queer community because it is something they identify with - so Eddie’s arc about his identity and who he is, is clearly a queer one.

Cowboy Buck - hiding behind a giant stache - it’s about Texas but also about recklessness and impulsivity - which are considered cowboy traits, and in the uk a cowboy is someone who is false or dishonest - which with the theme of the season being lying and fakeness - would fit with the idea that Buck is hiding his true feelings (behind a moustache too big for his face!), that he’s not being honest about them - and that is connected to Texas because we’ve started to address that concept now that Eddie is there - because that’s where his heart is. Even Tommy is part of this costume led arc nod - Buck finds a corpse (which he thinks is fake but turns out to be real - which is a subversion of the real/fake thing and is also why in part it is dressed in something similar to Eddie’s bachelor party outfit - because it’s all about subversion and Buck having things the wrong way around) which is a representation of Tommy and why he sleeps on the couch like a corpse - which was clearly a direction and not his bad acting!! Billy was already a Tommy metaphor - losing his posse etc in the same way Tommy is feeling the loss of not being a part of the 118!!

I really do love the costume team so very much - they just keep on knocking it out of the park at every opportunity!
