Jfc people are selling UV-C lamps for use in the home as disinfectants to just… have on in your home
Is this not the same year that the crypto conference sent a bunch of people to the hospital by not knowing the difference between UV-A lamps and UV-C lamps?
UV-C can permanently blind, burn, and possibly give you cancer - there aren’t many studies about people having long term exposure to UV-C light, because short term exposure fucks you up so badly
You do not want one just on on your home
It’ll kill bacteria and fungi and dust mites alright; it will also hurt and possibly kill you
Think “don’t shine a laser pointer in your eyes”, with additional serious sunburn in seconds

Würth Elektronik Webinar: UV-LEDs for Disinfection
https://www.futureelectronics.com/resources/featured-products/wurth-elektronik-wl-sumw-ultraviolet-ceramic-waterclear-uv-leds . How can you disinfect with UV-C LEDs? UV-C light is exceptionally potent of inactivating germs, bacteria and viruses. They may help reduce the spread of viruses such as the Coronavirus but will also remain of high importance after the pandemic. https://youtu.be/t5zlJTpZwGo

On today's Science Sunday, we'll be looking at these panels from Fantastic Four #47 to show why you should be afraid of the human torch!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All objects emit some form of radiation. The more energy the object contains (usually in the form of heat), the more intense radiation it will give off. If you remember the electromagnetic spectrum from the gamma goggles, good job! If not, here it is again! (I took this from Wikipedia, go check out their page on the electromagnetic spectrum if this sounds interesting!)
Tumblr media
The electromagnetic spectrum shows all the different wavelengths of radiation, with the smaller waves being much faster, and much deadlier. Radio waves are the size of buildings, while gamma rays are smaller than atoms and contain a crazy high amount of energy. Human Torch with his visible fire, would mostly be contained in the visible light category. To blast Dragon Man with ultraviolet rays, he would need to heat his fire up until it starts emitting these higher energy waves.
There are two ways we can interpret his new wave forms. The first is to take the panel of him blasting his rays seriously. Ultraviolet rays are invisible to the human eye, so the fact that we can see them in that panel shows that he is emitting both visible light and ultraviolet rays. The second is to interpret it as a stylized piece. The human eye can't see ultraviolet rays, and neither can the characters in the story, but us as readers can. In this case, Johnny would be shooting pure ultraviolet rays.
The first condition is already starting pretty bad. The average campfire burns around 900 degrees Celsius. This isn't hot enough to produce enough UV to give you a sunburn. Johnny would need to up his game. While I can't find an exact number of UV required to get sunburn and can't do any calculations because of that, but the sun gives off enough UV rays to be considered overkill in this case. The surface of the sun is 5600 degrees Celsius, meaning for Johnny's sunburn, he would have to blast Dragon Man with fire somewhere between 1000 and 5500 degrees Celsius! Looking at a chart of metal melting points, we can see that the heat of Johnny's fire would be hot enough to melt aluminum (660 degrees Celsius) and lead (328 degrees Celsius), and may be hot enough to melt titanium (1670 degrees Celsius) or tungsten (3400 degrees Celsius). Let's hope Dragon Man's skin is stronger than titanium, or he may ne getting more than just a sunburn here.
The second condition is truly scary. For his blast to be invisible, Johnny would have to be shooting almost entirely UV rays. The sun only gives off around 10% UV rays, meaning Johnny would have to burn significantly hotter than the sun to achieve this feat. Referring back to the electromagnetic spectrum above, to make things easier on the research for this, they had a thermometer to measure the temperature required to make each wavelength the most prominent emitted (Thank Wikipedia!).
Tumblr media
The ultraviolet scale picks up after the 9727 degree benchmark, meaning Johnny would have to go higher than even that. I don't think there's any element that Johnny wouldn't be able to melt at that temperature. Dragon Man can forget the sunscreen, his skin will melt before he has to worry about sunburn. So much for Johnny being a pacifist I guess...
