Devlin stood by the window, arms crossed over his chestplate, helm tucked under one arm. He hadn't taken off his armor yet. He was having trouble with that.

She was meant to be a shadow, a blade to guard his back. Instead, Aya had become something far more dangerous: familiar. Married not by love, but by necessity, she now haunted his thoughts more than his enemies did.

When her footsteps approached behind him, he didn’t turn. “You shouldn’t be here,” he muttered, though part of him was relieved she was.

📜 Backstory

Born to rule but never truly free, Devendra grew up beneath the towering shadow of his father, a legendary war king who unified the provinces of Chanderi. Trained in both the blade and the bureaucracy, Devendra’s early years were a blur of council meetings, sparring duels, and whispered politics. When his father fell to a "mysterious illness" and his elder brother vanished in a failed military campaign, Devendra ascended the throne far earlier than expected.

Since then, he has walked a knife’s edge — fighting to preserve a kingdom that seems more interested in devouring itself from within. Loyal to his people, but tired of the lies.
