Today was the day you were going to tell your best friend you were in love with him.
For weeks, you’ve been going over how you wanted to tell him. What you wanted to say, where you wanted to do it.
At the end of the day, no matter how perfectly you tried to plan it, just coming right out with it would be your best option, and you were ready.
Over the years, your simple crush turned into really liking him, then that turned into you loving him. Loving him in secret that is. He was there for you, in your human life, and he continued to stay even in your vampire life.
As a vampire, there were a few things you were scared of. The sun without your ring, wooden stakes, wolves, and Sam not being in your life being the biggest one.
If there was one thing you wanted more than anything else in the world, it’s Sam being in your life, no matter the circumstance. You’d be just friends if that what he wanted, you’d do anything for him.
As said, you love him with your full, dead slash undead being.
You took a deep breath as you walked into the house, glancing around at all of the red and pink decor pretty much blending together.
There were maybe two other vampires in the whole town, Colby, Sam’s other best friend, being one of them. A lot of them fled years ago when they were discovered, but since then, things have settled down and you’ve gotten really good at playing human.
“Glad you could make it.” Colby appears next to you, “Thought maybe you’d chicken out.”
You give him a shrug, “Thought about it, not going to lie.”
“I don’t think you have anything to worry about.” He looks around, “Sam is around here somewhere.”
“I’ll find him.” You look around, “I think I need to do this sooner rather than later, you know?”
He nods, “Right, well if you need anything, you know where everything is at.” He gives you a wink, “Have fun. Good luck.”
You watch him walk away and you take a deep breath as you make your way thought the semi-crowded house. Sam and Colby’s party’s were always bashes, there was never just having a low key get together.
As you round the corner, you come to a stop when you see a girl talking to Sam. The smile on Sam’s face put a knife in your chest.
You reach up, tucking hair behind your ear as you nonchalantly try to listen in.
The girl laughs, “Thanks for inviting me. You and Colby always throw the best parties, I can’t lie.” Sam chuckles, “Yeah, yeah, thanks. I’m glad you could make it. It’s pretty early on, but I’m hoping it picks up soon.”
You watch as the girl reaches out, sliding her hand down his arm, “You look good, Sam. All that running you’re doing is sure paying off.”
He laughs, “You think so?”
She nods, “Definitely, so. How about you save me a dance tonight?“
“Didn’t you come with a date?” Sam asks, sounding confused, and the girl shakes her head “No.” She sighs, “Trevor broke up with me last week.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.” Sam tilts his head, “I mean, yeah. I can save you a dance later on.”
His words twisted the knife, and you were gone before he could see you were there. You walk down the steps of the porch and Colby rushes out after you, “Hey. Hey. Where ya going?”
“Anywhere but here.”
“What happened?” Colby walks up to you and you turn around, “Sam’s already got a valentine. That stupid blonde bitch who’s been feeling him up the whole time I stood there watching.”
“I don’t-“
“I don’t care, Colby. I am sick of this shit. Sick of myself. Always waiting until it’s too late. Having something I want but can’t have right there in front of my face.” You shrug, “I’m done, happy Valentine’s Day, Colby.”
“Don’t do-“
You were gone.
You come to a stop, pressing you back against the building. You were making sure Colby didn’t follow you, but the sound of laughter filled your ears, catching your attention.
You turned around, watching as a happy couple walked past the ally. You crinkle your nose, eyes flickering dark as the hatred for happiness grew larger.
You vamped around the building, stopping right in front of them.
Their smiles fade and the girl looks up at the man. The man tilts his head, “Can we help you?” You let out a sigh, “Yeah, you can actually.” You look into his eyes, “Go down that ally.”
You look at the girl, “Follow him.”
They turn, walking down the ally, and you jump the girl, sinking your fangs into her neck. As you lean back, your hand sinks into her chest to retrieve her heart.
You turn, smirking at the guy whose eyes jump between his girlfriend’s body and the organ in your hand, “Love never dies a natural death, right?”
You drop it before shoving him against the wall, ripping into his neck to drink him dry. You step back as his body drops down next to the girl.
You wipe your mouth on the back of your hand and walk down the ally, laughing to yourself until you feel your phone buzzing in your pocket.
You pull it out, letting out a sigh when you see Colby is calling. You decline, stuffing your phone back and moving to your next spot.
You walk into a bar, mentally gagging at all of the love that’s floating around. You make it to the bathroom, washing the dried blood from your hands before making your way up to the bar.
The bartender‘s brows furrow, “You’re alone?”
“You seem shocked.” You tilt your head and he shrugs, “Pretty girl like you shouldn’t be alone on Valentine’s Day.”
You shrug, raising your brows, “People suck, what can I say?”
“Here.” He gives you a shot, “On the house.”
You smile, “Thank you.” You take it and spin around on the stool, your eyes immediately landing on a blonde that looks like Sam’s new girlfriend.
Disgust flooded your body.
Next to her was a guy, and the way he looked at her was full of love, “Ew.” You roll your eyes, leaning back as you waited for one of them to get up and walk up to the bar.
The guy walks up, and you couldn’t help but think how perfect this was. You look over at him, “Hey.”
He looks over at you, giving you a nod, “Hey.”
“That your girlfriend over there?” You point and he nods, glancing back with a smile, “Yeah, she’s perfect, isn’t she?” He looks back at you and you stare into his eyes, “Break up with her, leave, forget you spoke to me.”
His smile drops and he stands up straight, “I think I’m going to break up with her though.”
“Oh, that’s too bad.” Your fake pout turns into a smirk as he walks back up to her, her gasp sounds through the whole bar, “No, no. What? I don’t- Link, please. It’s Valentine’s Day!? You can’t do this!”
She sobs as he walks away and she gets up, running to the bathroom. You let out a sigh, smiling as your eyes set on a new target.
A couple dancing at the end of the bar.
You purse your lips as you see the girl pull away from him to go to the bathroom. You get up and walk down to the guy, “She’s pretty.”
He laughs, “Oh yeah, don’t ask me how I got her because I don’t even know myself.” He takes a sip of his drink, “Can I ask why you’re talking to me? It’s just if Casey comes out and sees me talking to you, she won’t be happy and I don’t really want that.”
“You really love her, don’t you?” You tilt your head and a cheesy smile appears on his lips, “Yeah, I can definitely see myself marrying her.”
“Gross.” You sigh, locking eyes with him, “When she comes out, I want you to break her heart. Tell her you’re done, leave, and forget we talked.”
You go back and sit down, glancing over as the bathroom door swings open, and soon enough another heart was broke and her crying was music to your ears.
You let out a sigh as you get up and walk out of the bar.
As you turn, you run into someone and you roll your eyes, “Don’t you have a party to host?”
“I think keeping you from going on a Valentine’s Day killing spree is more important.” Colby crosses his arms, “Found two. One with her heart ripped out, which, was very telling on who did it. Are there anymore?”
“Yeah, but they’re not dead. Just two broken hearts, crying in the bar bathroom.” You motion with a laugh, “Anyway, good talk.” You pat his shoulder and walk away.
He vamps in front of you, “Why are you doing this?”
“Doing what?”
“Don’t play dumb. Why are you out here playing killer Cupid?” He tilts his head, “Did you even talk to Sam?”
“No, but I heard enough. Oh, did they have their dance yet? I hope I don’t miss it.” You give him a devilish smile and he scoffs, “That’s not his- Sam isn’t into her.”
“Yeah okay.” You roll your eyes, “Seriously Colby. If you don’t leave in the next three seconds, the next person that walks by, happy or not, is dying.”
He crosses his arms, “You’re bluffing.”
“Am I?” You squint, smirking as you see a girl walk out of the bar. You grab her and vamp into the ally, fangs in her neck.
You look up, watching as Colby’s eyes darken but quickly return to normal, “Stop. Stop!” He vamps forward, shoving you back before biting his wrist and pushing it to her lips, “You can’t- do you even know what kind of risk you’re taking by doing this?”
“I don’t give a fuck, Colby.” You turn, “Just go back home. I’ll be fine.”
“So you’re going to run, take out your anger on people who don’t deserve it?” He yells after, and you stop, “All of this anger, was once love, Colby, and that’s something you of all people should really know. You remember Eve, don’t you?”
He clenches his jaw and relaxes, “Okay.” He scoffs, “Run. Do what you do best. But just remember, while you’re out here throwing a tantrum, Sam is back home, dancing with that girl who isn’t you.”
You clench your jaw, thinking, he wants a reaction. But you don’t give him one. You shrug, turning to walk away before getting out of there as fast as you can.
As you’re walking, you see a couple standing down by the river. You lean against the light pole, watching as he gets down on one knee and you scoff as the girl starts screaming yes over and over again.
“Oh my god.”
You vamp down, faking the overly happy attitude, “Congratulations you two! I just seen the whole thing from up there and I just had to come down and tell you how fucking gross that was.”
The girl shakes her head, “I’m sorry, it- what?”
“Come on, Lynn.” The guy takes her hand and pulls her, “We’re leaving.”
You vamp in front of them again, “Sorry, if I let you leave, that’ll look bad on my part.” You laugh, “you know, the one who now hates Valentine’s Day letting two happy people go.. that wouldn’t match the image I’m trying to uphold.”
“I’m sorry I think-“ The guy gasps as your hand plunges into his chest and the woman screams, “Oh my g- Help! Help!”
“Shut up.” You stare into her eyes, and she goes silent, “Not another fucking sound.”
You pull your hand from his chest cavity, extending your arm out, “Here. Hold this.” You drop the bloody organ into her hands and push the guy back over the fence, watching his body plunge into the water.
“Now, for you.. I think I’m going to-“
“Y/n?”
You freeze, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” You turn around, Sam walking down the steps towards you. Colby stands at the top, whispering, “You need to stop this shit.”
You roll your eyes at Colby and look at Sam, “Why are you here?”
“Colby told me.” He stops, “He told me everything.”
“Oh did he now?” You turn back to the woman, taking the heart from her hands and throwing it into the river. You look into her eyes, “Forget about everything, including your dead ass fiancé. Go home.”
She blinks, looking around, “Excuse me, I’m just heading home.” She gives you a smile and you look back at Sam, “There. I didn’t kill her.” You look up at Colby, “Happy now?”
Sam walks up to you, “What’s going on with you?”
“What’s going on with me?” You scoff, “That’s rich coming from you.”
He shakes his head, “What do you mean?”
“Nothing.” Your hands slap your thighs, “Just, go home. Have fun with what’s her face.” You walk away but Sam’s words stop you in your tracks, “No. I wanted to be there with you.” He sighs, “I was planning on doing the same thing you were.”
You slowly turn around, “what a wicked way to treat the girl that loves you, too. Flirting with her right back. Allowing her to touch your arm and give you a sob story of how she was alone on Valentine’s Day.” You scoff, “Please. You didn’t seem like you wanted me there. You looked pretty content with fake blonde Barbie. Oh, and not to mention that you agreed to give her a dance later on? Fuck. That.”
“I was just being nice, and I-“
“I wanted to rip her head from her body, Sam. I don’t think you understand how much I actually fucking love you. Human, vampire, my love for you did not change, and to hear what you said to her, and what you’re saying now.. I just-“
He plants his lips on yours, “I was never going to dance with her.” He presses his lips to yours, “A part of me, I don’t know what it is, but a part of me wanted to see her face when she saw I was with you.”
“Oh..” You pull your bottom lip between your teeth, “That.. I could have gotten behind that.”
“If you would have just came to me instead of jumping off the cliff and going on a killing spree..” he chuckles slightly, “that’s..” he clears his throat, “That’s not okay by the way, but um.. what do you say that we go back to your place, get you cleaned up, and we just… talk, or whatever?”
“Yeah, yeah..” You nod, “We can do that.”
He presses a kiss to your lips and nods, “Good. Now come on, my little bloody Valentine, before you get caught.”
He takes your hand and you walk up the steps towards Colby. You stare at him with a cold expression, “I’m not saying thank you.”
“It’s fine, you don’t have to right now, but you will.” Colby smirks, “Eventually.”
You roll your eyes, “Uh huh.” You look at Sam and he laughs slightly, “You probably already heard, but we’re going to her place.”
Colby nods, “Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow. Happy Valentine’s Day.” He gives you a wink and you flick him off with a laugh.
You and Sam walk down the road, “I don’t scare you?”
“Why would you scare me?” He glances down at you and you shrug, “I’ve killed people, Sam.”
“I mean, it’s not okay, but you’re.. you. You have stuff normal people don’t.. and you didn’t go right to the source, meaning me.” He laughs, “So I mean, it’s fine with me. I don’t know, I’m just glad that we finally get a chance to talk about everything.”
“Yeah, I’m sorry I went all killer Cupid over you.”
“Killer Cupid?” Sam laughs, “That’s a good one.”
“Yeah, when Colby caught me after the bar, that’s what he called me.” You laugh, “I just.. being a vampire, everything is so heightened and I just- that jealousy part took over and nothing else mattered.”
“It’s okay.” He wraps his arm around your shoulders, “Let’s just get home, and we can talk about it there.”
༶•┈┈┈┈┈┈୨♡୧┈┈┈┈┈•༶
Sam’s eyes flick to yours as he wipes off the corner of your mouth, “There.” He drops his hand, “I think we got all of it.”
You look in the mirror, nodding, “Yeah. All clean.”
He smiles, reaching up to turn your head towards him by your chin, “Look at me.”
You look from his lips to his eyes and he takes a deep breath, “I’m sorry for making it seem like I was leading you on. I’ve been sitting on my feelings for a while, and when you turned.. it just.. it changed everything. I didn’t think you’d want to be with a human, I don’t know how that works.”
You slide your hand up to his neck and you press your lips to his, “Let me show you exactly how it works, okay?”
He smirks, “Please.”
You pull him with you to your room and he pulls you closer by your hips, his lips moving with yours. You slide your hands up his sides, pushing his shirt up with them.
He pulls his shirt over his head, tossing it to the floor and he watches as you take off yours, dropping it with his.
He smirks, pulling you to him and he walks you over to the bed.
You quickly flip around, and he chuckles, “I’ll never get over how fast you are.” You smirk as you straddle his waist, leaning down to kiss down his neck and chest. You move down to his jeans, kissing across his stomach before sitting up.
Your fingers undo the button and your eyes flick up to his as you pull down the zipper.
His breathing quickens as you tug the fabric down his legs. He reaches down, pulling you back up to him. He rolls you over, his body over yours as his lips meet yours.
He kisses down your chest, stomach, and stop above the band of your sweats. He pulls them down with your panties, kissing along your thighs before going back up to your lips, “I love you.”
You slide a hand up, tangling it in his hair, “I love you.”
He reaches down, freeing himself from his boxers and you bite your lip as you spread your legs wider. He rubs the head of his cock against your cunt before slowly pushing in.
Your brows furrow as your head tilts back, your nails on your hand that isn’t holding his hair, sink into his shoulder and you let out a moan.
Sam kisses you and down your neck, groaning lowly as he pushes in more, “Fuck, you feel so good.”
You gasp as he pulls out, thrusting in deeper, “Fuck, yes.” You whimper, turning your head to press your lips to his.
He groans lowly against your lips, “I’m so sorry I kept you waiting.” He kisses your forehead, “Fuck.”
Your back lifts from the bed, “Don’t be sorry, just focus on what’s happening right now.”
He kisses down your neck, moaning against it as his thrusts grow faster. Your legs tighten around his waist, panting as he repeatedly hits that spot that’s shoots jolts of pleasure all through your body, “Fuck, fuck. Right there, baby.”
You drag your nails up his back as you moan loudly, “Feels so good.”
He smashes his lips to yours, swapping moans with you as your lips move in a heated sync. He slides his hand down to your hip, rolling over and you move as he pulls you with him.
You instantly take over, leaning forward to plant your hands by his head as you bounce your hips up and down.
Sam was captivated by you.
He always thought you were the prettiest thing he’s ever seen, but seeing this side of you took him to a whole new level.
“F-fuck.” He bucks his hips upward, “You’re so fucking good at this.”
You slide a hand over to rest on his neck, leaning down to press your lips to his. His hands slide around to your ass, gripping tight. Your walls squeeze around him, moans growing louder as you feel yourself creeping towards that ecstasy, “Almost there.”
You bury your face into his neck, moaning out loudly as you guide yourself through your own high.
Sam rolls you back over, attaching his lips to yours as he picks up thrusting once again, “To be with you.. is all I want..”
You look up at him, “That’s all I want, too.”
He kisses back your jaw, stopping to whisper in your ear, “I want you to turn me. I want to be with you forever.”
Your breath hitches in your throat and you pull him closer, “Are you sure?”
He nods as he pulls his head up, “I want you. I want to be everything you are, right along side you.”
You feel the burn of tears forming in your eyes and you nod, “I can do that.” You smile, pressing your lips to his, “I love you.”
“I love you.” He cups your cheek as his thrusts grow sloppy, “Fuck, fuck.” He groans as his cock twitches, thrusts slowing down until he stops.
He presses a kiss to yours lips and rolls off of you. You move to lay your head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat, “Are you sure you want this?” You sit up, looking into his eyes, “I just- you’ve always liked living the human life, I don’t want you to resent me later on for turning you.”
“I could never resent you.” He reaches up, running his thumb over your cheek, “I want us, I want to run around the world with you. I want to love you for as long as I can.”
You smile, leaning in to kiss him, “I want that, all of that.” You run your thumb across his cheek, “When do you want to do it?”
“Now.”
“Now?” You raise your brows and he nods, “I don’t want to wait any longer.” You nod, “When you wake up, you’re going to be hungry. You’re going to feel all of your senses at once, but I’ll be right here. I’m going to help you.”
He nods, “I trust you, baby.” He turns, pressing a kiss to the palm of your hand, “I’m ready to spend a long, long life with you.”
You smile, bringing your wrist to your lips and you bite down. You press it to his lips and he closes his eyes as he drinks your blood.
You pull your wrist away, moving to grab your clothes and slipping them on. As sam gets dressed, he looks over at you, “How are you going to-“
“I’ll do it quick.” You get back into bed, “Just, come here.” You hold your arms out and he sits down, laying back in your arms. You wrap your arms around his head, taking in a deep breath, “I love you.”
“I love you.”
You close your eyes as you hear a crack, laying his body back on the pillow. You press a kiss to his lips and sit up, entering the waiting period.
A few hours later, Sam sits up in a gasp.
“Hey. Hey.” You vamp to him, “It’s me.”
“Y/n?” He pulls you in, “Oh my god.” He starts to laugh, “It worked.” You nod, kissing his head, “It worked, baby.”
He leans back, “I love you.” He pulls you in, pressing a kiss to your lips. You smile within the kiss, “I love you. Come on. Let’s go complete the transition, make you my bloody Valentine.”

The door opened as soon as we stepped onto the dark colored porch, and I felt myself automatically bracing myself for whatever might greet me. It seemed like each of the clans had their oddities, and, just based on what Sam had said, I was halfway expecting someone akin to a butler.
But instead I was greeted by the sight of a young man with carroty-orange hair and green eyes. More notable, though, was the red diamond painted on his cheek under his right eye.
“Sam! Hey! Long time no see,” He immediately perked up at the sight of the man next to me, who chuckled slightly. Holding up his hand in jaunty wave before he gestured to me.
“Cater, this is Y/n,” His tone was relaxed as he introduced me in lieu of any greeting, and I found myself smiling awkwardly at the young man in front of us.
Somehow, whenever Sam introduced me to a new clan, it felt like I was a child being introduced to a coworker of one of my parents. Which was ridiculous, since Sam was hardly a parental figure to me.
Cater looked my way, his eyes widening slightly before he smiled, “You’re the vampire hunter! I remember you from the ball. Mind if I take a pic with you?”
I blinked slightly at his words before noting the smart phone he held in his hand and nodding uncertainly. And, as quickly as that, he was at my side and holding up his phone with a cheerful, “Say cheese!”
I barely managed a smile before the phone flashed and he was back in front of me, pocketing his phone as he continued in a cheerful tone, “Pleased to meet you! I’m Cater, but you can just call me Cay-cay. And since you got here in time, I get to let you both in!”
I nodded slowly, startled by how friendly the young man was, before I glanced over at Sam, who only smiled at me amusedly before following the orange-haired man into the manor.
“You both must be here to talk to Riddle, hmm?” I nodded as I entered the building, immediately blinking at the topsy-turvy decor.
The floor was like a chessboard, and the walls were a blessedly muted red, but everything else was perfectly strange. Almost like I’d stepped directly into the book of Alice in Wonderland.
“Yes, the head-vampire sent me to evaluate the clan,” I answered distantly, not entirely sure where to look next before I at last settled on looking back over at the young man who now led us through the hallway that seemed to be veritably packed with vampires who bustled about, muttering to themselves and laughing loudly with one another.
Well, they were until they trailed off to stare at me with open curiosity, slightly glazed eyes, or that tell-tale look of hunger.
“Riddle’s been expecting you for quite some time now. He’ll be thrilled to hear you’ve finally come,” Cater smiled back at me, seemingly unaware of the stares we garnered, though I noted the way his gaze stayed on me a little bit too long, just like so many vampires’ did.
Sam slid into the conversation smoothly, giving me time to gain my bearings in the midst of all the weirdly chaotic decor that tried to drag my attention in multiple different directions.
“We’re sorry to have kept him waiting, but Y/n here has been going in the order of clans selected by the head-vampire.”
Cater nodded good-naturedly, his gaze at last being dragged away from me and over to Sam, “Of course, they do work for him after all. I’m sure Riddle will understand.”
He paused, turning and smiling widely before he started waving with one arm, “Hey Trey! Guess who the guests are!”
I fought the urge to lean around him to better look at who he was talking to as I heard a slight chuckle, “Well, I can see Sam, but is there someone else?”
I blinked as another, slightly taller young man came into view. This one had dark green hair and what looked like a black clover painted on his cheek under his left eye. He was also carrying a tray of cupcakes, of all things.
I frowned slightly at the desserts, pondering why on earth a vampire clan would have cupcakes when vampires themselves didn’t get any nutritional value from eating cupcakes or any other normal food before I reminded myself that this wouldn’t be the first time I’d run into a mortal in a vampire clan.
I smiled slightly at the young man, watching as his honey-colored eyes widened and he inhaled a little too sharply. And just like that, my theory that he might be human came crashing down as he swallowed slightly and stared at me with that obvious fascination paired with the dilating pupils of a vampire who was reacting to me for the first time.
But then he blinked, and his expression was schooled back into a pleasant smile as Cater explained in an easy tone, “This is Y/n, the vampire hunter. They’ve finally come to evaluate the clan.”
Trey cleared his throat slightly, a hint of awkwardness seeping into his voice as he fixed his glasses, his fangs flashing ever-so-slightly as he spoke, “Ah, yes. I remember you from the ball.”
I smiled slightly, almost sad that I’d been wrong and that this man was indeed a vampire. It would’ve been kind of nice to have another mortal here with me.
There was no disappointment in my tone, though, as I smiled at him. Trying my very hardest to not stare at the cupcakes in growing confusion as I nodded, “It’s nice to meet you.”
He nodded, visibly relaxing before he blinked and glanced between me and the cupcakes.
He chuckled slightly, a warm sound, before he held out the plate, “Want one? They’re for the tea party later, but I won’t tell anyone if you sneak one now.”
I faltered, blinking in surprise before shaking my head, half-embarrassed that I’d been caught staring in what was probably obvious curiosity, “Oh! No, thank you, but I’m good.”
“Trey, you can’t go trying to charm the poor thing when they only just got here. That isn’t fair,” Cater leaned against the other young man, his tone drenched in light-hearted teasing that had the green-haired one chuckling and shaking his head.
“I’m not; they just looked curious, so I thought I’d offer. Besides, I’d hate for them to feel unwelcome,” Trey smiled slightly as he glanced back over at me, and I found myself smiling in return, relaxing slightly as I watched the two young men interact.
For all the strange decor, the Heartslabyul clan seemed to have fairly normal people here so far.
If I were lucky, this would be a painless evaluation with minimal trouble.
But I hadn’t actually met the leader yet, and that was always a deciding factor for how the evaluation would go.
“Well, come on. We don’t want to keep Riddle waiting any longer than we have to, after all,” Cater stepped away from Trey, beckoning for me and Sam to follow after him as he started off down the hallway again.
Sam fell in step with the orange-haired young man as idle conversation flowed, but I found myself glancing over to the side as Trey leaned over to better look at me, “Mind if I tag along? I was headed that way anyway, so….”
I was shaking my head before he ever finished, idly wondering if his behavior had anything to do with my effect on vampires even as I responded, “No, I don’t mind. We’re just going to be letting your clan leader know why I’m here and what I’ll be doing during the evaluation.”
My words put a more genuine smile on his face, and he nodded. Walking alongside me easily, as if there was nothing at all odd about me evaluating his clan.
But the people here at Heartslabyul already seemed fairly friendly. Almost like the Scarabia clan had been, but a little less overwhelming.
If I were lucky, the clan leader would be just as easygoing as Kalim, and the whole matter with the rules would turn out to just be a misunderstanding.

You let out a sigh as you sit down on the curb, bringing your lit cigarette to your lips.
The chatter from a group of guys catches your attention. You perk your head up, watching as they round the corner of the building, one specifically catching your attention.
He was blonde, reminded you of someone you once knew.
“Hey.” You call out, watching as they stop and look over at you, “Any of you have a cigarette?”
“Isn’t that what you have in your hand?” The one asks with a laugh as he points, “Or do you mean for after that one?”
“There you go.” You laugh, taking a drag as you stand up, “I need one for my walk home.”
“You’re walking home, alone, at this time of night?” The blonde looks both ways before crossing the street over to you, “Shit, you must be brave.”
“I can handle myself.” You laugh as you look up at him, your eyes dilating as you whisper, “Tell your friends you’re good from here, they can keep walking.”
“You guys can go.” He waves them off, “I’ll catch up with you guys in a little bit.”
They don’t hesitate to leave him and your brows furrow, “Some friend group you have there.” He laughs it off, “That’s just how they are. So, before I give you this cigarette, can I at least get your name?”
You smile, nodding your head, “if that’s the key for me to get that, then yes.” You drop your cigarette and step on it, “My name is y/n.”
“Y/n, that’s pretty. Mine’s Carter.” He holds out his hand you nod, “Cute.” You smirk, eyes on his, “Follow me, Carter, and don’t make a sound.”
He nods, taking your hand and following you across the street. You lead him in between the buildings and push him against the wall, “You remind me of someone I met a long time ago.”
He stares at you and you step in closer, “Too bad we hate each other now.” Your eyes grow dark and with a growl, your fangs are sunk into his neck, ripping his skin apart.
As you step back, your eyes follow his body as it drops to the ground.
“You’re not very careful, are you?”
You turn your head slightly, “You’re a little far from home, aren’t you?”
“I need your help.”
You turn around, watching as Colby walks up to the body on the ground. He bites his wrist as he bends down, pressing it to Carter’s lips, “Clearly, you still have a type.”
“Are you here to criticize me about having a type, or are you here to tell me why you need my help?” You shift your weight onto your one leg and Colby looks at you, “I mean, kinda falls into both categories, really.”
You raise your brows, shaking your head as you turn, “Nope.” You take a few steps away and Colby’s words make you freeze, “He flipped his switch, y/n.”
Your eyes search the wet ground, “Why?”
You turn around, seeing Colby pick Carter up from the ground, “Go catch up with your friends, forget what happened here.” He pushes him away and Carter runs past you.
You look back at Colby and he shrugs, “No idea. He won’t talk to me.”
“What makes you think I can get him to bring it all back?” You laugh, “Do you not remember what happened?”
“No, I remember, but that doesn’t mean you guys don’t still love each other.”
You laugh at his words, “If you think that, then clearly you forgot.” You shake your head, “I can’t help you. I’m sorry, Colby.”
You turn but Colby vamps in front of you, “He wears the smell of blood and death like perfume, y/n. You need to come back with me, even if it’s just to try.” You roll your eyes, “Why?”
“Because I just have a feeling that when he sees you, it’ll change his mind.”
“What if it doesn’t, I mean..” You sigh, thinking for a moment, “Fine. But if this backfires, I’m snapping your neck and leaving.” He nods, “Fine. Deal, whatever. Now let’s go.”
“You owe me a cigarette, Colby. He was going to give me one but then you sent him off without a care in the world.”
Colby laughs and slings his arm over your shoulder, “I’ll get you a whole pack, alright. We have a long drive ahead of us.”
𝚆𝚑𝚒𝚝𝚎𝚜 𝙲𝚛𝚎𝚎𝚔, 𝚃𝚎𝚗𝚗𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚎
You slowly lifted your head from the car door as it came to a stop, “Are we here?” You look over at Colby and he nods, “Yep. Good old, White Creek, Tennessee.”
You furrow your brows, “Why are we here?”
“This is where Sam is.”
“Why is he-“
Colby cuts you off, “Look, y/n. I don’t have all the answers to your questions, okay. After him ripping through our town, I followed the trail of bodies that were broadcasted all over the news, and so far, this is where the trail stopped.”
You take a slow breath, “Okay.” You reach for the door and Colby stops you, “Wait.”
“What?” You look at him, “Are you going to give me the spiel about how Sam isn’t himself and I need to not take whatever he says to heart?”
“Actually, I mean, yeah. Yeah, I was.” He laughs, “Sometimes I forget you know your way around this stuff.”
“Is it weird being friends with someone who’s older.” You laugh, “And stronger than you?”
He rolls his eyes, “Didn’t have to bring that part, but sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night.” He laughs and opens his door. You get out, meeting Colby behind his car, “So. Where is he?”
“That house.” He points, “We’ll have to be invited in.”
“Of course.” You huff, “Alright. Let’s get this shit started.” You walk towards the house, glancing back at Colby as you reach the door. You extend your arm up, knocking gently a few times.
“Sam.” Colby calls out, “I know you’re in there, and I know you can hear me.”
You listen in, your heart skipping a beat when you hear Sam’s voice for the first time in ages, “Go away, Colby. I don’t need your shit.”
“Open the door.”
“Fuck off, Colby. Go home.”
Colby sighs, leaning against the banister, “Open the door. And then we’ll go.”
You hear footsteps growing closer and closer to the door. You straighten up as the door swings open, “Who’s we?”
Sam freezes, his eyes locking onto yours.
“Yeah, I called in reinforcements.” Colby stands up, “Now get whoever you’re compelling inside of this house to invite us in.”
“Why would I do that?” Sam tilts his head, a smirk toying at his lips, “That would make it easier for you guys to stake me, tie me down, torture me until you get exactly what it is you want.” He sighs, “Normally I would hate to tell you this, but go fuck yourself.”
His eyes move to you, “You, too, lying bitch.”
“Sam-“
Your words are cut off by the door slamming in your face, and you sigh, turning to Colby, “So, what’s plan B?”
Colby shrugs, “Kinda hoping you thought of that on the way here.” You roll your eyes and turn to beat on the door again, “Sam.”
“Sam! Open the door!”
“Oh my god.” Sam groans as he pulls it open again, “Don’t you ever fucking stop?”
“I’ll make it easy, flip that twitch and I’ll be gone not a second after.” You cross your arms, “But.. if you wanna play this game, we can play this game. Can’t promise I’ll take it easy on you, though.”
Sam laughs, shaking his head, “Colby, I’m sorry to tell you, but you wasted your time tracking her down. I’m not leaving this house, and you..” he points at you and Colby, “Are not coming in.”
He steps back, closing the door once more and your hands slap your thighs, “Come with me.” You grab Colby by the arm and pull him back over to the car.
“Figure out a plan B yet?” He looks over at you as you close your door and you nod, “Sam feeds when he has his humanity off, right?”
“Sure does.” Colby sighs, and you raise your brows, “Did you hear anyone else in that house?”
He shakes his head, “Nothing but the quiet humming of the woman who owns it.”
“Exactly, so we just have to wait. We have to wait until he decides he’s hungry again and comes out, or until he sends that woman out to fetch him his dinner.”
“What are we going to do if he sends out the woman?” Colby asks and you shrug, “We kill her and then we don’t need an invitation to get inside.”
“He’ll probably run.” Colby shrugs, “He’ll run, and then what?”
“He can’t outrun me, Colby. I can promise you that.”
“Right, because you’re old.” He teases with a laugh, and you roll your eyes, “Sounds like you’re jealous because you can never beat me in a race.”
“Yeah, sure.” He looks back, “Well go with that.” He taps your arm, “Looks like you still know him pretty damn well.”
You look back, watching as Sam sends the woman out of the house. He watches as she crosses the street and then closes the door.
“How do you want to do this?” Colby looks at you, and you look at him, “Take care of her. I’ll take care of Sam.” You reach for the door and get out. Making your way back over to the house.
You watch as Colby disappears after the woman, waiting a few seconds before he comes back out, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth.
He gives you a nod and you turn back, knocking on the door.
Sam opens it again, scoffing before he goes to close it. You reach in, holding the door open and Sam’s face grows into a shocked look.
“Looks like you’re not getting any dinner tonight.” You vamp in, hand around his throat as you slam him hard against the wall, “You’re out of control, Sam.”
He pushes you back, hand rubbing his neck, “Since when the hell do you give a fuck about me? You seem to make that pretty fucking clear when you left god knows how long ago.”
“I had to, Sam.” You step towards him, paying no attention to Colby as he walks in and shuts the door, “I had to leave. If I didn’t, I would have died, do you not get that?”
“It’s always excuse, after excuse with you.” Sam shakes his head, vamping towards you. His hand is on your throat, staring down into your eyes, “I need you to get it through your head that I hate you.”
“I hate you, too baby.” You smirk, tilting your head, “As I said.” You flip him on to his back, your knee pressing into his chest, “If you wanna play, we can play.”
He smirks up at you, letting out a sigh, “You both. Can just go to hell.” He kicks you off of him, flipping you over his body, and he was gone before you got back up.
“You couldn’t have stopped him?” You look at Colby, “Oh, shit.” You walk over, pulling the broken wooden stick from his stomach, “Sorry.”
“It’s fine. Just..” Colby stands up, “Go. I’ll come after in a second.”
You nod, taking off after Sam.
After a minute of running, you come to a stop, “Sam.” You sigh, “Just, come out and fucking talk to me.” You listen in, your head snapping to the left when you hear faint cries for help.
You speed over, stopping when you come across what looks to be like a murder scene, “Oh.. my god. Sam.” Your head snaps up to look at him, “Why are you doing this?”
You step over the bodies lying by the fire, walking up to him as he drops the last from his grasp. He reaches up, wiping away the blood on the corner of his mouth with his thumb, “My question is, why aren’t you?”
You roll your eyes and he extends his arm over, wiping it on your lip, “You were so much fun when you were just like me.”
“You’re out of control.” You lick your lips, your eyes fluttering closed at the taste of the blood, “I can control myself.”
“Can you?” Sam tilts his head, “I remember watching you as Colby and I forced you to turn your humanity back on.” He sighs, “If I had known better then, I would have just let you go. This shit is so much better than dealing with all of the whiny thoughts about doing the right thing.”
“What happened, Sam.” You stare at him and he shrugs, “Can’t I just, have a little fun for once?” He looks down at the bodies, “I mean, look at it this way. You and Colby keep pushing me, I’ll stack every body I drain on the front door step, leaving you both to clean up the mess.”
He steps closer, “It’s not hard to not give a fuck, y/n.” He jerks his head back, “Oh wait. I guess, for you, you don’t give a fuck either way. You’re just a selfish bitch who only comes around when she wants or needs something, I mean, fuck. Now I could care less so I mean, if you want to have one last go around before you leave again I’m d-“
You twist his head, closing your eyes as his body hits the ground.
“I was wondering who was going to do that first.” Colby walks up, “What the fuck did he do here?” He looks around and you sigh, “I don’t know, tried giving us a warning, but look how that turned out.”
“I’ll go get the car. There’s a road right out that way. You got him?” Colby points to Sam’s lifeless body and you sigh, “Yep.”
You bend down, picking up his arm and pulling it up around your shoulder. You hoist him up, arm around his waist as you walk with him towards the road.
After a moment, you see headlights and the car comes to a stop. Colby gets out and walks around, opening the door, “Just throw him in.”
You laugh slightly as you push his body into the car, slamming the door shut, “How long do you think we have?”
“Hour or so, maybe two.” Colby gets in, “I have a friend who night be able to help us out, though. It’s about a four hour drive, so. Get comfy.”
You let out a sigh, “Perfect.”
𝙰𝚝𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚝𝚊, 𝙶𝚎𝚘𝚛𝚐𝚒𝚊
You glance back at Sam, “probably going to wake up soon.”
“We’re five minutes out, so we should be good.” Colby looks over at you, “Are you okay?”
You give him a nod, “Yeah, I’m fine. Not anything I haven’t heard before.” Colby furrows his brows, “like, from Sam?”
“There’s a lot more to me that you don’t really know about, Colby. I used to be just like Sam, I used to live that way. Thinking that keeping your humanity off was the best thing in the world. I’ve lost a lot of good friends, potential relationships, family that way.”
“I never knew that.” Colby sighs, “I’m glad you’ve come to your senses about it.”
You raise your brows, “Yeah, me too. I mean, sometimes the pain of remembering all of the horrible things I’ve done becomes, too much, but at the same time, I’ve learned that feeling it, and a tiny bit of compulsion goes a longer way.”
You laugh slightly and Colby shakes his head, “No judgment. I feel like we’ve all had our moments.”
“Yeah. Sam’s just living through his.” You take a deep breath, “If things don’t work out here.. I have another idea but it’s something that-“
“You’re wasting your time.” Sam groans in the backseat, “Just stop here, I’ll walk the rest of the way.”
“No can do, brother.” Colby shakes his head, “You’re not getting away from us again.” You look back, watching as Sam rubs his neck, “God, can you be a bit rougher next time?”
“Aw, did I hurt your poor little neck?” You roll your eyes, “Please. I should have just ripped your heart out of your chest.”
“Not like you haven’t done it before.” Sam mumbles and you laugh, “Is that why you flipped your switch? Because you kept thinking about me but you were too scared to come and find me?”
Sam rolls his eyes, “Please. You wish this was about you. You always need someone pining and losing their shit over you.” He sits forward, “Trust me, sweetheart. This has nothing to do with you.”
“Okay.” You nod, giving him a smile, “Well see about that.”
Colby comes to a stop and Sam leans forward, “Where the fuck are we?” Colby glances over at him then looks to you with a nod.
You quickly reach up, snapping his neck one last time before you let out a sigh, “I hate to admit it, but it feels so good getting him go shut up.”
“I’m sure if his humanity was on, you’d feel differently.” Colby smirks and nods, “I’ll get him.” You roll your eyes, moving to open your door and get out. You follow Colby up the steps, reaching forward to knock on the door.
A girl opens the door, giving you a smile, “Y/n?”
“Um, hi, have we-“
“Tara! I’m Colby’s witchy friend.” She moves out of the way, “Him and Sam talk about you so much, we’ll, Sam more than Colby, but it’s great that I finally get to put a face with the name, come in, please.”
You walk in, Colby following behind you, “We need your help.”
“Of course, what can I do?” She looks at Sam, “Oh, he didn’t.”
Colby nods, laying him down on the couch, “He did.” He turns around, “I need you to let us use your basement for a little bit.”
“Do you need me to de-spell his ring?” She asks and Colby nods, “You have a window down there, right?” She nods and he smirks, “Perfect.” Colby looks at you, “What if plan C doesn’t work?”
You shake your head, “I don’t think you’re going to like it.”
𝚃𝚊𝚛𝚊’𝚜 𝙱𝚊𝚜𝚎𝚖𝚎𝚗𝚝
“So what happened with you and Sam again?” Tara asks as she sits down on the chair, “He told me you guys were a thing and then just went different ways.”
“Something like that.” You peer into the room, eyes fixating on Sam’s still body, “He and I.. we were..” you laugh, “I don’t know.” You look at Colby as he walks over to the door, looking out at Tara, “They were perfect for each other, Tara.”
“If you were so perfect for each other, why did Colby have to drive all the way to Seattle to get you?” She tilts her head, “Sorry, sometimes when I talk it sounds bitchy but I promise I don’t mean it like that.”
You laugh, “It’s okay. Um, a few years ago, I flipped my own switch, ruined a bunch of shit, and I hurt Sam in the process. He got so mad at me that he ended up telling the one person I told him not to tell I was vampire and I had to leave town.”
“Ohh, okay. He’s mad at you for leaning and you’re mad because he signed your death certificate?” She asks and you nod slowly, “Yeah, something like that.”
Colby sighs, “He thought y/n died.”
You look at him, “What?”
He rests his head against the bar, “After you left without any other word, he did look for you. He asked around, went to the person he told to try and fix shit, but when they said you were gone..”
“He thought they meant they killed me..” you shake your head, “Is that why he called me a lying bitch?”
“Oof, Sam’s a dick when he has his humanity off.” Tara shakes her head and you and Colby both nod, speaking at the same time, “I know.”
“It’s better this way.” Sam argues, groaning as he lifts his head, “It’s better this way, because then I don’t have to remember all of the pain you left for me to deal with.”
You clench your jaw, “Are you done?”
“Are you?” He cocks his jaw and smirks, “We can do this all night, baby.”
You open the door, stepping in, “Tara, lock this behind us.” She gets up, the sound of the heavy lock clinking closed fills the silence.
“So.” You laugh, “Jokes on you, because…” you walk over to the window, pulling it open and Sam bursts out into painful yells. You watch his skin sizzle before closing it, “It’s still daylight out, sunshine.”
He flexes his hand, watching his skin heal, “That all you got?” He lifts his head, eyes on you as you walk around to stand in front of him, “I don’t want to, but I can snap your neck again, have Tara here take a look into that memory you’re holding on to.”
“You can try, but I don’t have any good ones worth holding on to, so.” He shrugs, “Your move.”
You slide your head up to his cheek, taking a deep breath as you look into his eyes, “If I hurt you that bad, why haven’t you tried to kill me, or fought harder to get away?”
“Get your fucking hands off of me.” Sam snaps his head away from your hand, “Listen, you do what you have to do. Starve me - wait, we’ve been over this already.” He rolls his eyes, “Just-“
He gasps, gritting his teeth as you slowly push your hand into his chest, “Fucking.. bitch. Get your.. hand out of my chest.”
You tilt your head, “Hmm, that’s weird. What I’m feeling, is definitely a heart. Usually someone with one of those can understand when they’re being a total ass.”
You pull your hand out, reaching for the towel as Colby hands it to you. Sam coughs, “Just go.”
“No.” You argue back, “If you want me gone, make me.”
Sam groans, shifting his writs to try and get them free, sighing when he can’t. You glance at Colby, looking back to Sam as he starts to laugh, “This.. oh fuck.. this is hilarious.”
“Why’s so funny?” Colby asks and he shrugs, “This whole thing, y/n coming back here, clearly not dead.”
“Is that why you turned it off, Sam? Because you thought y/n was dead and you just couldn’t live with the pain any longer?” Colby steps forward, “Well here she is. Alive.”
Sam shrugs, “How was I supposed to know that? She only thought about herself after she left.” His state shifts to you, “Per usual.”
You walk up, gripping his chin, “Turn it back on.”
“No.” Sam holds his stare on you, “What are you going to do if I don’t?” You lean in, “Maybe I’ll rip your heart out for good.”
You go to reach for his chest but Colby stops you, “let’s just leave him. Let him sit here for a little bit.” Colby pulls you back, “Come on.”
You drop your hand, scoffing as you shake your head, “Fine.”
“Feel free to not come back.” Sam calls out as you and Colby both walk out. Tara closes the door and Colby locks it, “Come on.” He leads you and Tara upstairs into the kitchen, flipping on the tap.
“Is that to block out his hearing?” Tara asks as she points to the running water and you nod, “Yeah.” You look at Colby, “I think we need to move onto plan D.”
Colby stares at you, “I don’t-“
“It’s the only thing that I have a strong feeling about, I think it’ll work.” You reach out, “Well have Tara mess with his head, show him before we actually show him.”
“I can do it.” She nods, “I just need to know exactly what I need to show him.” She points, “Can I just ask, though, why do you want to want to keep dealing with that?”
You shrug, “There’s still good in him, Tara. We just have to really force it out of him.”
You spend the next half hour explaining to Tara plan D, then you make your way down to a very irritated, and hungry Sam.
“When I get out of these restrains, I’m ripping your throat out.” Sam groans, “Can I at least get some fucking blood, goddamn.”
“No.” Colby shakes his head, “Not after speaking to us like that.”
Sam laughs, “Oh, my apologies.” He clears his throat, “May I please have some blood, Colby?” Colby states at him, “No.”
“Fuck you.” Sam rolls his eyes, “Fuck all of you.”
You look at Tara, “If he gets out, I’ll get him before he gets to you.” She nods, “I trust you, Colby says you’re stronger and smarter.”
You look at Colby with a smirk, “So you do think that.”
“That’s not- we have something a little more important to tend to.” He shakes his head opens the door, walking in with Tara behind him.
“What’s little witch bitch gonna do? Fry my brain? Show me some emotional flashback between the people we used to be?” Sam scoffs, “Good luck.”
You look at Tara, giving her a nod and she walks behind Sam, pressing her fingertips to his temples. She closes her eyes, slowly chanting stuff in another language.
“If anything were to happen to you, I don’t know how I’d live with myself.” Sam says as he shakes his head, moving his hand up to brush hair from your face, “You’re literally the best thing that’s walked into my life, or you know, vamped, in.”
“I can take of myself, Sam.” You laugh, “But it’s really nice having you here with me.” He laughs slightly nodding as he leans in for a kiss. You stop, grabbing tightly onto his shoulder as you gasp.
Sam looks down at the blood spreading across your shirt, his hears filling with the sound of you choking on your own blood.
“No, no, no. This isn’t- no.” He shakes his head, his hand pressing to your chest, “Stop, stop, stop.” He looks up, cupping your cheek, “Please don’t leave me, please don’t leave me!”
You gasp for air, your eyes fluttering closed as your skin starts to turn grey and veiny. Sam lets out a frustrated yell, “Fuck, fuck, no, no. Please, please.”
He gasps, eyes snapping open and Tara jumps back.
You walk over in front of Sam, eyes on his glossy ones, “How did that make you feel Sam?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know.” He glares up at you, expression flipping the second he sees Colby jam his hand into back.
You gasp out, groaning as Colby’s fingers graze your heart, “C-Colby-“ you try to reach back but he grabs your hand, eyes on Sam, “I swear to god Sam, if you don’t turn it back on you can really say goodbye to her. For good this time.”
Your eyes squeeze shut, pain radiating all throughout your body as he pushes his hand in deeper, “S-Sam..” you gasp out sharply, “P-please, please.”
Sam shakes his head, visibly fighting with himself, “No.. no..” he looks down, but Tara grabs his head, forcing him to look at you, “Look at what is happening Sam. I’m not messing with your head, Colby is really going to kill her if you don’t feel something!”
Sam’s eyes fill with tears and he takes a sharp breath, “I-I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” He pulls his wrists, “Stop! Colby, stop! You’re hurting her!”
And just like that, Sam was back.
He slowly pulls his hand from your back and wraps his arms around you, “You good?” You nod slowly, “Yeah, yeah. Just-“ you motion, “Set me down.”
Colby gently sets you down on the ground and goes to untie Sam.
He immediately falls onto the ground, moving over to check on you, “Are you-“ he shakes his head, laying his hands on your cheeks, “I’m so sorry. I’m so, so, sorry.”
“Is there anything I can do?” Tara asks and Colby shrugs, “Do you have any blood bags?” She shakes her head and Colby bats the air, “Stay with them. I’ll be right back.”
He vamps out of the basement and you look at Sam, “Did I win?”
“Did you win, what?” His eyes scan your face and you laugh slightly, “The game.” He rolls his eyes, “Yes, yeah, you always win. I just-“ he leans in, pressing his lips to yours, “I’m so sorry.”
You hear Colby come back down, dragging a girl behind him, “Here.” He pushes her into the room and she kneels down, extending her wrist to you.
Your eyes grow dark as you lean in to feed.
As you pull away, Colby pulls her back and looks into her eyes, “Thank you, you can go now, and don’t remember anything about this.” He pushes her towards the steps and she walks away, leaving the house.
“How do you feel?” He looks at you and you stand up, “Im fine, we’re no longer seeing the darkest side of him. I’m calling this a good day.” You look at Tara and smile, “Thank you so much for your help.”
“Anytime. It was great meeting you, y/n.” She smiles and walks away. You look at Colby, “Im going to take him for something to eat.”
He stares at Sam and Sam raises his hands, “I’ll be fine, if not, she’ll just break my neck again.” He laughs and you nod, “I’m a pro at it by now.”
You take his hand and lead him up the steps and out of the house. You watch as he snatched, ate, and erased with complete control.
“Good job.” You give him a thumbs up as he walks over to you and he rolls his eyes, “Considering everything I said to you over the last few hours, I’ll let that slide.” He laughs and pulls you into him, “I was so scared Colby was going to kill you.”
“I had a feeling that that would work.”
Sam kisses the top of your head, “My own death never frightened me, but yours..” he shakes his head, holding you tighter, “That is my greatest, deepest, fear.”
You look up at him, “Come on. We can talk about it when we get home.”

I swallowed thickly, my eyes darting over to where Ortho floated towards me, looking between me and Idia before he smiled hopefully at me, “So you’ve decided to work together?”
Idia let out a long-suffering sigh, shaking his head slightly and answering as Ortho already began to droop with obvious disappointment, “No.”
The word was practically groaned out before he stepped around me, glancing my way and huffing out a sigh, “This is where we do our work.”
I felt my eyebrows arch at his words before I looked around the room, fighting against the urge to cringe backwards under the weight of all the hungry-looking stares. But that would only make me look like prey, and that was the last thing I needed.
But this was most certainly a lab. The walls were just as dark as they had been in the other areas I’d been to so far, but the room was filled with white tables that held all sorts of contraptions. And even here, the room was lit with those neon lights that made this place feel like it was straight out of a sci-fi movie save for the Greek-looking symbols that glowed on all the tools that were scattered throughout the lab.
There was also the distinctly clean smell that seemed to only ever be found in scientific areas and made me wonder what, exactly, they’d had to clean up in this room. I could only hope it was nothing too serious.
I swallowed slightly, looking back towards Idia, who now looked out of place in his hoodie. Me and him were the only people here that weren’t in long, dark lab coats that, unlike the usual pristinely white lab coats, could ominously enough hide any stains that might appear on them.
“What is it that you’re working on?” My voice stayed level and lightly casual as I questioned him even though I didn’t actually expect an answer. After all, apparently whatever the Ignihyde clan was working on was being kept a secret.
Sam usually had all sorts of stuff he could tell me about the clans, so the fact he didn’t for this one implied that they were very good at keeping their secrets.
I would probably be working on uncovering everything this clan hid for quite some time.
“Brother came up with the idea to cure vampires, and that’s what we’ve been working on all this time,” Ortho piped up in a cheerful voice from where he now drifted from machine to machine. Pressing buttons and checking screens as the other vampires in the space slowly went back to their work.
Glances were furtively shot towards where Idia and I stood. But I was hardly concerned about any of them in light of what Ortho had just said as he’d easily handed me information that I was almost positive was supposed to be a rather large secret.
My eyes were wide as I looked between the little robot and the young man who stood next to me, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else, “A cure for vampirism?? Can that even be created?”
My mind almost immediately conjured images of Epel. I didn’t know if any of the other vampires I knew would want to be cured. They all seemed fairly satisfied after all, including Rook. But Epel… he still worried about his family.
The more I thought about it, though, the more I frowned.
Vampires were known to be undead creatures possessing no heartbeat…. I could only assume from what Silver had told me about the process of turning a human into a vampire that vampirism really was like a disease, or maybe a poison since he’d mentioned feeding a human vampire blood could also result in a change.
If it were a normal disease, then it ought to be remediable, but with vampires already being dead….
My gaze rested on Idia, who only looked my way after a flicker of irritation went through his gaze at Ortho’s words. I could only assume that he hadn’t wanted Ortho to tell me, but now he looked my way with a cold gaze that had me fighting not to take a step back in retreat.
There was something strange about this man that went beyond him just having flaming hair.
Initially, he hadn’t seemed like anyone I really needed to be worried about, but the moment my purpose here had become clear, something had shifted. Now he seemed more imposing as he stood before me, all but looming over me.
Before, he’d seemed lanky and like an awkward teen with the way he’d tried to hide in his room when Ortho had first introduced us. Now he seemed like more of a mastermind. Not as imposing as Malleus, but certainly someone to be wary of.
And then there was the fact that he seemed utterly unbothered by me, unlike the other vampires here at Ignihyde.
Everyone else here at this clan, save for Ortho, took note of me. Their breath visually catching as their pupils dilated, before they took the telltale deep inhale all vampires seemed to take when I first encountered them.
Those were all the usual signs that there was something about me that drew them to me.
But Idia didn’t show any of those signs. And not in the same way that other vampires, like Malleus or Rook, didn’t. Other vampires behaved as if they were drawn to me, even if they didn’t like it. Malleus and Rook, for instance, showed those signs differently. Leona, another example, had always seemed more annoyed or like he was controlling himself before he’d gotten used to me.
But Idia was totally unaffected, like he wasn’t a vampire at all. Just a guy with flaming hair and pointy teeth. But he had to be a vampire if he was the clan leader, and I was confident that somebody, be it Vil, Rook, Sam, or someone else entirely, would have told me if he weren’t a vampire.
It was possible that it was something to do with the fact he was supposedly cursed, but why was he cursed? And what sort of curse gave any person, much less a vampire, who was a being that was most certainly flammable, flaming hair and made it so that they weren’t burnt or singed by the flames?
Initially, the lack of being affected had made Idia less concerning and more comfortable to be around, but now it almost made him more imposing. Because he was somehow different from other vampires, I didn’t know how yet.
What other rules that applied to most vampires didn’t apply to him?
“If anyone can come up with a cure, it’d be my brother. He’s super intelligent after all,” Either unaware or unconcerned by the tenseness springing up between me and his brother, Ortho beamed at me as he casually praised Idia’s intelligence.
Another vampire drifted closer, his eyes trailing up and down my form before he smiled, his fangs flashing as he licked his lips in an oddly nervous fashion, “Yeah… Boss is pretty much a genius. Made Ortho himself, after all.”
I found myself shifting away from the man even as I glanced back at Idia, who appeared to be more annoyed with the praise than anything.
But if he really had made, or rather built, Ortho just like this man and Sam had both said, he had to be a genius.
Idia wasn’t looking at me, though, he was looking around the room before turning, pressing a few buttons in an intricate pattern that had his fingers dancing with lightning speed across the keypad and causing the door to open in front of him.
He left the room in silence, and I found myself trotting after him with Ortho gliding along beside me, his eyes curious as we followed his brother.
I let myself exhale as the door slid shut once more behind us without any directions, and I was in the hallway with just the two brothers, one vampire and one robot.
“Woo, survived that encounter,” Idia’s words came out faster as he flashed a grin over at the robot next to him, who bobbed his head with a bright-eyed smile.
“You did great, big brother! You didn't even look nervous!” I blinked in quiet surprise at their exchange, suddenly wondering if I’d completely misinterpreted the situation.
Had all of that just been a front that this man put on to look good in front of his clan?
Ortho turned, looking my way with a curious tilt to his head, “Are you hoping to use the cure to resolve the insane vampire issues?”
He turned before I could answer, looking up at his brother as he continued, “That is why you brought them to the lab, right?”
Idia seemed to deflate as he was reminded of my presence, but turned to look at me nonetheless. His voice turning almost monotone once more, “No. I told them so that I could get this evaluation over as quickly as possible.”
He paused, meeting my gaze as he continued, “Now you can see that we aren’t involved in the influx of vampires. If anything, we’re working against it.”
His words made complete sense. Them creating something to cure vampirism didn’t make sense if they were also making vampires insane. Unless the cure itself was making vampires insane instead of curing them.
I frowned, knowing I couldn’t take him at his word, and I shook my head slightly, “I can’t tell Crowley that. And I have to be able to give him proof or make a good argument.”
Idia’s frown changed, from a weary one to one filled with annoyance that confirmed my suspicions that he didn’t want me sharing the fact he was making a cure with Crowley.
Not that I could blame him. The head-vampire might not take kindly to a cure.
At odds with his brother’s annoyance, Ortho looked between the two of us in perfect, innocent confusion.
And again it hit me that these two were totally unfazed by me. And in many ways it was a relief. To just be able to interact with these two without concern for my safety or wondering if they were drawn to me solely by the scent of my blood. But it was also odd and left me wondering what exactly was up with Idia.
Ortho being unfazed made sense; he was a robot after all. But that brought me to a new question entirely. If Idia had invented him, why had he done so? Pure curiosity, or something else entirely?
And finally, would curing vampires, who were already dead as a result of their disease, result in the people who were supposedly cured ceasing to exist and crumbling to ashes in the same way they did when I handled them?
I was hesitant as I spoke, my voice coming out slowly as I bit the bullet and simply questioned the man in front of me, “Curing the vampires…. Wouldn’t that mean killing them?”
I watched as Ortho’s motions froze before he shook his head, his eyes wide with shock, “No! No, it would just mean making them as they were before and…. And….”
I watched as his expression shifted from one of surprise at my words to slight horror. I could all but see the cogs in his head turning, and I almost faltered at the expression in his wide eyes as he looked towards his brother. An alarming mixture of surprise, disbelief, and horrified worry.
His voice was timid and wavering as he spoke, the words coming out as a whisper, “That is right… isn’t brother? The cure won’t hurt anyone… right?”
Idia’s eyes held mine, but I saw him waver at the sound of the robot’s small voice. But rather than looking towards Ortho, he continued to stare me down. I held my ground, though, swallowing thickly the longer the silence stretched between us.
But that silence was answer enough.
“I can’t use this in my report to Crowley then…..” I trailed off, wanting to speak my mind on what I thought of this so-called cure, but stopping myself as I glanced towards Ortho, who was still staring up at the man he called ‘brother.’
And I knew when to leave. Both of them obviously had quite a bit to discuss now, and I almost felt bad save for the fact that it was a question that I’d largely had to ask.
I exhaled softly before I spoke once more, “I’ll be back tomorrow to continue with my evaluation….”
With that I walked past the two of them, finding my way back to the elevator and taking it back up to the top floor in silence and exiting the library.
I could certainly say already that evaluating this clan was going to have its own unique challenges. One of which was most certainly going to be the clan head himself.
