Better Safe than Sorry -- Rehearsals, Shot List & Test Shoot

Based on the video Isaac and Alix had shot on the phone and the storyboards, I made a blocking plan for the long take (Green Camera). I added a second long take (Red Camera) to start at a later point and that would merge back into the first take in case we couldn't do it in one shot and had to cut around it.

Camera rehearsals

After picking up the equipment, I did some camera rehearsals with Isaac. Isaac was able to give me instant feedback on what he liked and didn't like about the takes. I also rehearsed and took notes regarding the camera direction/adjustments I had to make at different moments during a take, such as adjusting the zoom and the aperture or when to PAN.

We also modified some of the shots as we were practicing them such as having the camera move around to make a side profile silhouette.

I also tested a few lights and flags, but they either didn't affect the frame or didn't look as nice, so it was decided to only use the already present window and corridor lights.

We also came up with a few extra shots for coverage in case the oner didn't work in the edit.

Floor plan & Shot list

From this, I made another floorplan with all the non-long take shots and translated it into a thorough shot list which included all my camera directions notes. I added a few extra shots for extra coverage safety. However, we then had too many shots so Isaac selected the one he wanted and adjusted some of the camera directions.

The Shoot

I set up the camera following the manual from last semester's On-set production and set up the white balance. We had to do extra camera rehearsals with Aliya as she was going at a totally different speed as Isaac when I rehearsed with him.

Dynamic Range Issues

I was struggling to get enough dynamic range for the transition from the staircase to the outside. For the staircase, I was using the camera at its widest aperture (F4) with a 10 000 ISO -- any more the noise would have been too distracting. Because of the long take, I couldn't use any extra lights as they would show in the frame. The staircase lights weren't adjustable. I couldn't use the variable ND filter in the staircase as it added an initial layer of filter which darkened the footage too much. Moreover, any darker and the frame was both not readable as well as the autofocus had nothing to grab onto.

The aperture was the only thing I could control on the fly during takes, but even going from F4 for the indoors to F22 as I crossed the entrance door to outside had the outdoors overblown.

I then had the idea to use an invisible cut just as the character leaves the building through a fade to white. We recorded the end bit in the street separately from the rest of the take, using the variable ND to manage the light levels.

Things to be improved

I still think the moment when she reaches the bottom of the stairs and sees the door open is not conveyed well, I think sound design may help with this moment.

I doubled the resolution of the ECUs on the computer screen so that they can be zoomed in digitally by the editor if needed. However, I think this wasn't enough and that these shots need to be filmed from further away in an even higher resolution so as to have the whole screen in focus. The current shots have some important text that is out of focus. I also think the website needs to be designed with the text size in mind as I asked the text to be made bigger for the shot, which then changed the shapes of some paragraphs.

I think the team is pretty satisfied with the shoot and the footage and like the messiness of some of the footage for the energy it gives. I still don't think it's perfect and I think some of the messiness makes the action not readable at times. The bottom of the staircase is still somewhat underlit with the shadows getting crushed and becoming murky.

I also think narrative-wise the start is very slow and expositioney, it takes a good 2 and a half min before the character is actually confronted with a situation and takes action.

Overall it was a very good shoot, that's 50% of the final film already figured out for my role as DoP.

This is an old post, drafted in July for the glitchy Olympus Camedia C-100, but the images came out lovely so I had to share.

Finally I got my hands on a real glitchy camera, with a sensor well past its prime, the Olympus Camedia C-100, a 1.3-megapixel fixed-focus digicam released by Olympus in 2001. I reckon the camera is overexposing by around 10 stops, and normal daylight images are completely blown out, but I have a cheap variable ND filter, that on its maximum setting produces much more ‘natural’ images. Another mellow workday, which suited me just fine, especially since we know this slow patch won't last long. Allied is closed tomorrow in observance of Juneteenth, so I decided to hit the gym tomorrow morning instead of this evening. Instead, I rolled more test footage using the ND and Cinebloom filters, and shot V-log for the first time along the way. The results were somewhat better than Sunday's footage, in part because I remembered that the ND filter is variable and actually bothered to adjust it. Tomorrow, I'll see how it looks on TV in 4K via my YouTube channel. (It will upload overnight.) I hope it's something approaching cinematic, especially after my attempts at color grading the footage.

During the afternoon, I'm finally going to see Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Everyone I know who's seen it likes it, with the exception of Audra, for whom the Mad Max series is tantamount to Star Wars for most other nerds. I look forward to making up my own mind. I'm not a Max cultist but enjoyed the first four films in the series. I think I've seen each of them only once all the way through, though all on the big screen.
