His words were not ones Leanore had expected - from anyone really, not just him. Sure, she had heard them before; they had even been directed toward her a few times. But it was always platonic. Always from one of her family members; from Callum when they were both drunk, stumbling through the back alleys of Lothering and then later Kirkwall. From Kenton when he had bid her and their brothers farewell before the Battle of Ostagar. From Bethany, with such frequency that it was easier to pinpoint a time she hadn't heard her sister say it.

But she had never been told as much by friends, let alone someone she might have any romantic inclinations for. She never could have expected it to have brought her such... joy. Her heart felt as if it had missed a beat when she turned to look at Varric now.

But did he mean it? No. No, he probably didn't mean it the way she wished he did.

So she grinned at him, laughing softly as she raised her ale in salute. "What's not to love?" she joked, winking at him. "I'm an absolute delight, after all. And I'm your best friend, that you're stuck with now. You have to love me!"

So, @breadstickcat was talking about Pidge (DotU) in an AU divergent being close with a Drule not much older than him and being a DotU take of Blade of Marmora. And my brain took that, put it to VF, and RAN WITH IT. And I ended up with this guy. A Drule rebel (Blade of Marmora equivalent or actually BoM existing in VF) and just existing and not at all evil. If anything, my thoughts is of him being relatively chill. Also, I was originally considering calling him Ivok (EE-vawk), but I realized days later that that was close to DotU's Avok. Damn. May need to reconsider.

I feel like he'd also suit VLD, too. Especially as I went more VLD route in appearance since the Drule of DotU and VF don't exactly differ from each other much (if at all). Also, his comment of nine kingdoms? In the DDP comics, there are apparently ten kingdoms, which we like to work with in a server I'm in. I briefly forgot there are ten, though, and thus had him say "nine". When I realized it, instead of fixing it, I decided to go with it. Perhaps there was a tenth in the past but in VF era, it might be long gone.

Vawk - Molten lava and charred flesh

Your heart burned so fiercely that it burnt itself out, leaving horrible scars in its wake; scars inside your chest and on the hands of those who touched you, the hearts of anyone who got close enough to connect to yours. The person you are now is no longer recognizable, burnt up by your own anger and passion and love. The injuries can never be fully erased, but they can be soothed with time and trust and forgiveness.

Realized I never shared lore of Vawk before, and this fits so much. Will put it under the cut since it mentions Abuse/Sexual Abuse and a little bit of violence.

Vawk's former clan was a shell clan owned by scavs, and he was a plaything of a scav. "Nothing more than a foot rest", that scav remarked. He got his revenge however, when he climbed onto the bed of the second in command of the clan with intel of how to reduce scav's control. He enjoyed the hatred and sliver of regret in the scav's eyes when he slit his throat.

It was a deal between them. Vawk offers his body, his skills as a techie and charming people pleaser to help the second in command shave off the scavs and eventually get clan leader position, in exchange he gets protection and freedom to learn skills and grow himself. Despite the transactional nature, the second in command was nurturing to Vawk, built him up from the ashes that he was reduced to. You can say that the second in command merely wanted to shape Vawk into his perfect type, and you'd be right. But Vawk wouldn't be who he is now if not for him. In turn, Vawk gave a part of his heart to him, only for him to be assassinated later. So Vawk fled, with a heart that's got cracks all over and missing a piece.

i've been working a bit on the sequel to a previous f!hawke/varric fic of mine, believe it's easier for you, which was a modern au about varric coming back to kirkwall after a several year absence in which he basically ghosted everyone, and must work his way back into earning everyone's forgiveness/trust again

this sequel so far has been delving a lot more into the backstories of varric and hawke. i can't reveal too much about the plot of the fic itself because i want to finish the entirety of the fic before posting it on ao3 as i did with the first one, but i don't mind showing what little i've done today:

"Varric," Edyiss said as they pulled up to a red light at an intersection, "I have a question."

Varric's smile froze on his face, accompanied by his train of thought screeching to a complete and very dramatic halt, because that was not a good set of words. That was a very bad set of words in fact, ones that foretold his immediate doom. His mouth worked as he struggled to find something to say that wouldn't make things catastrophically worse. "Oh?" he settled with, which seemed like safe waters. Peaceful, non-confrontational waters. Unfortunately, he couldn't stop his mouth from continuing to move without him. "Should I be sitting down for this, or would it be better to grab a shield?"

Edyiss' eyes narrowed only slightly, but it was enough that Varric winced. "Yes," she said, which compounded his wince into a pained grimace.

"That's nonspecific enough that I feel like I should be worried," he said with a half-hearted attempt at his usual grin.

She sighed and scrubbed a hand down her face. "Just… let me get through this, all right? It's hard enough asking it without you turning everything into a joke."

Thought:

The way the game frames it, the inquisitor and co have just arrived at skyhold when hawke gets there. They're literally just now checking out the new digs and varric comes in and is like "ahahaha yeah so funny story" and BAM hawke.

Which, it doesnt say much if anything about how long the trek through the mts was, but i and a few other sticklers have figured it took about 2-3 weeks based on distance, size of the group, etc.

Which means hawke was already on their way when they got to skyhold. Which means they and varric had likely been planning on meeting up before haven went down. Which means hawke was coming to stand with haven against corypheus but got there too late.

But also, im picturing varric writing to bells on the road, telling her what happened, telling her "im alright dont panic" but this obstinate ass barely got to the a and was packing her bag to come save her man, willing to risk whatever ire cassandra had, willing to risk imprisonment not just as an apostate but as hawke, champion and loser of kirkwall, aka one of the most wanted people in the world second to anders. To save her man.
