Vet tech
Last weekend my daughter came home from college and said, "ok, this is kind of a big ask, but" and proceeded to tell me that an old cow donated to their large animal department at school had had an unexpected calf. The cow, after the semester ended, would be sold for slaughter. The calf would go as well. She wanted us to adopt the calf and raise it. My husband and I were still wrestling with this difficult question early in the week, when she sent us a message that the calf had died of natural causes.
That, frankly, was a relief. I don't really want to have a milk cow at this point; I did that while the kids were young, but it's a LOT of work. Daily, unskippable work.
Then she sent me a message that she (at the behest of a friend) had adopted a jumping spider. Set up a little terrarium for him in her dorm, "look! Here are pictures."
So, vet (and by extension vet nursing) schools cause problems, is what I'm saying. Not that the kid hasn't always been this way.

Reminder: When we recheck your pet’s ears, even if it’s the 5-6th time cause the infection is stubborn, it is not pointless. No i didn’t have an owner decline a cytology for the pet with brown discharge coming from the ear what are talking about. (p.s. if it gets to that point send off a culture and sensitivity pleasepleaseplease)

One thing about vet med that drives me insane is how people do not prioritize their animals. A client didn't treat their dogs illness because "well I was going on vacation a few days later and i just didn't want to deal with it". Like 😭 your old sweet dog deserves to have its medical issues treated. You wouldn't ignore a child's illness because of vacation?

To all vets and vet techs you know or anyone who has successfully dewormed their dogs.
INCLUDES:
X-rays
Vet thoughts
Blood work
And more
You could save a life by sharing this. She’s held me down through all of these conspiracy works that he has done. 🤔

Hi friends. I am so tired. The fight against burn out is real. But hey! At least my hospitals are finally “fully staffed”.
I’m going to try to be better about posting on here because I think it will be helpful to vent. Even if no one is listening.

So our full-time assistant caught whooping cough from a family member she lives with, and now I have symptoms as well (thankfully relatively mild so far for all of us, since we're vaccinated! Unfortunately, like the canine Bordetella vaccine, it isn't super great at entirely preventing the disease, but it does decrease severity and secondary complications). Given my asthma, my RNP has gone ahead and started me on an antibiotic and prednisone just in case, since the test takes ~2-4 days for results. (And I'm all wheezy so I need the steroid either way). This also means I'll be contagious for a shorter period if it is indeed whooping cough.*
I do love that the staff at my doctor's office are aware of what vet med is like because they were doing the public health questionnaire stuff to determine if it counted as close exposure since we're just coworkers, and as soon as they heard where I work and what role, they were all "yeah that definitely counts as close exposure." "Y'all are all up on each other" 🤣
*For whooping cough, if you get treated with antibiotics, you're only contagious for 5 days from the first full day of antibiotic treatment, but without antibiotic treatment you're contagious for up to 21 days after symptoms first appear O.O

Mousling
Last night, slightly after 9, my daughter got a phone call from a classmate. Classmate, S, had found a baby mouse so little its eyes were still closed - on the ground in a parking lot. S is also in the veterinary nursing program at K's college, and wanted to try to raise the mousling as a challenge project. Unusual, but doable; we've done it several times.
K gave her careful directions about formula, warming, etc . . supplemented by directions from me. At one point S was apologizing profusely for being a bother, to which K responded "No! Not at all! This is my Thing; I'm here for it!!"
Gave me a little pang. My mother passed away before K was even born, but I see her 'reflection' in K so often. Sometimes (as in this case) through me and my actions, other times things that skipped a generation. But it's always a bit emotional.
Good luck to S, she's going to need it. Young foundlings are a challenge; tiny species even more-so. It has a lot better chance with S, though, than it did in the middle of a parking lot.

(I deserve a reward. I finished the canine section of the research paper. It ended up being 44 pages with the reference page. I still have cat, equine, ruminates or swine, and exotics left to write. And each of those also have 10 topics. But I’ve got one done!!!)

Fun story from work.
So I work in a animal hospital as a vet tech. We also do adoptions, and we have a big cat named Totoro. Cause she needs to lose weight we don't have her up for adoption yet, but someone put her in the adoption room for some exercise. Makes sense because the cage is not big enough for her to do much, plus it's good socialization. I start my shift, and like 40 min into work someone asks me to go bring her back. I say sure and go to the room, needed to check on the cats in there anyway. I can't see her anywhere. I'm confused but figured someone might have already brought her back. So I head back, look in her cage. She's not there. Now I'm getting really confused. I ask where she is, they say cat room. I say no she isn't. They're confused too, so someone comes to help me look. We look EVERYWHERE. Plus in some empty rooms someone might have put her in. Nothing.
Now we're starting to freak out, how did we lose such a big cat?? Asking around, someone remembers another person took her next door (there's two buildings, both hospitals but the other has a somewhat break room) cause she was eating the food she shouldn't have been. Look next door, can't see her ANYWHERE. So we start freaking out more, and call the person who brought her there. They don't pick up. So we text. About 10 min later they suggest a hiding place.
... This mf was hiding IN THE COUCH THIS WHOLE TIME. And in a place where unless you move it perfectly, you'd never see her. So Totoro has been found and despite being twice as big as my 8 nearly 9 year old cat she hides even better than him.
So I am taking my break now cause I spent about an hour running around like a headless chicken

I am letting everyone know that I have been exposed to Leptospirosis at work. I do not know what the next step will be.
I am waiting patiently to hear back from my primary. So far, I only have headaches and body aches, but this could be something else.
If things get severe, I will be going on a long hiatus.

Doing an emergency load of laundry because one of the dogs we did surgery on today woke up flailing. Doggo's fine, but we ended up with anal glands sprayed all over the table, the floor, and my pant leg. I still had 5 hrs left in my shift. There is only so much witch hazel and Expel can do.
How are y'all's days going?
