Vet tech

Last weekend my daughter came home from college and said, "ok, this is kind of a big ask, but" and proceeded to tell me that an old cow donated to their large animal department at school had had an unexpected calf. The cow, after the semester ended, would be sold for slaughter. The calf would go as well. She wanted us to adopt the calf and raise it. My husband and I were still wrestling with this difficult question early in the week, when she sent us a message that the calf had died of natural causes.

That, frankly, was a relief. I don't really want to have a milk cow at this point; I did that while the kids were young, but it's a LOT of work. Daily, unskippable work.

Then she sent me a message that she (at the behest of a friend) had adopted a jumping spider. Set up a little terrarium for him in her dorm, "look! Here are pictures."

So, vet (and by extension vet nursing) schools cause problems, is what I'm saying. Not that the kid hasn't always been this way.

motivation

i may or may not have slacked on 100dop, i’m going to restart when i get back from my vacation!

BUT exciting news: i was offered an interview for vet school! i need to get back on my grind so i rounded up some photos to get me motivated again :)

a Day Off

At 9 yesterday morning I grabbed a couple of totebags and headed out for a little trip to visit my daughter. She likes having me come to her school now and then, and I definitely need a little break from home. (I could actually use a big break. Alas.)

I met her in the science center after her chemistry class, and we spent the rest of the day having quiet fun (but also homework, which never ends). Walking around campus and the school farm. Since there is a vet tech program at the school, they have stables of horses, and a few cattle, sheep, and poultry for the students to practice nursing tasks. (In fact, she's at a lab right now, anesthetizing one of Rosalie's siblings or cousins). The sheep pasture was, of course, full of lambs taking afternoon naps. I only like sheep when other people own them, but it's impossible not to smile at lambs. There a large creek running through the campus, which is excellent for strolling along. Plants, everywhere, of course, and we kept our eyes peeled for morels in the naturalized part of the creek-bottom area.

We went out to dinner, which was lovely. Girls night! There is so much more traffic here than I'm used to. She needed to buy crickets for her jumping spiders, so we stopped in a shopping center that had a Petsmart. On the way out of the parking lot, she pointed out a Michaels (hobby shop) to me. Could we? Visit Michaels? I asked. I have never been in a Michaels or a Hobby Lobby. Truly, never. She did an abrupt u turn in the parking lot. ALWAYS up to visit that store, it seems.

Eeep. EEEP! I. Uh. Overwhelm. Help! So many. Thimngs. Eek! heart racing. and the aisle of canvases. HRRRK (dramatically clutching my chest) There are bigger canvases . . than I ever dreamed of. Shaking, crying. Mom, see, I TOLD you it was cool! Mom, breath. Breath slower. Jesus, Mom. MetALlic iNkS

(takes several moments to calm down) I calm, now. Ok, I have my 'calm mask' back on, now. I'm pretending to be calm.

So, really fun day, is what I'm getting at. Our evening stroll around campus featured many students walking dogs from the vet center. K pointed out dogs she had interacted with or gotten to know when she had kennel duties as a freshman. Quite a few of them are related to Rosalie, who has a large and complicated family tree.

Today I'll go home. At some point. Not in a rush, it must be said. And she keeps thinking up extra things for us to do, which is charming.

One thing about vet med that drives me insane is how people do not prioritize their animals. A client didn't treat their dogs illness because "well I was going on vacation a few days later and i just didn't want to deal with it". Like 😭 your old sweet dog deserves to have its medical issues treated. You wouldn't ignore a child's illness because of vacation?

Being one of the youngest credentialed techs in a practice is not for the fucking weak. I could give less of a fuck how things have “always been done” fuck you talking bout I need to pull this cat who has a bite wound in an unknown area out by its scruff??

My dear girl has finished half of her college years (veterinary nursing) and she has been called THREE TIMES in the last month for animal health questions. She had been so patient and kind with people. But, damn. Medical folks live like this (getting questions all the time)?
