I traveled to Mexico in the early 80's to do portraits for the people. I used large formate 8x10 and 4x5 film so I could contact print on printing out paper. I would tone them in selenium which was much cheaper than gold chloride. Joe (I think that was his name, correct me if I’m wrong) could often be found on this bench, just sitting, saying hello to people. He didn’t seem to work, his father left him a six family house. His life seemed very simple. Never saw him with anyone except neighbors and friends from the park. “B&W Cherry Trees, Waterfront Park, April 2011” From the archives… ©2011 Gary L. Quay A happy accident of a sort. I put the wrong film holder in the camera. I had meant to shoot Kodak Portra 160VC, and shot some Arista.edu 100 instead. With no contrast filter, I was worried that It would be drab, but the extra half stop of exposure (between 100 speed and 160) and using Rodinal at 1:50 at an N+1 expansion corrected for this a little at the expense of some detail in the blossoms. Not that I would have gotten much detail there anyway, the wind never let up long enough for me to both stop motion and have decent depth of field. Something I hadn't noticed at the time was the way the lamp post on the right seems to lean. I used a wide angle, and I should have corrected the convergence with a little back tilt. Live and learn. Camera: Sinar Alpina 4x5. Lens: 90mm Nikkor.
