Pop Before Plastic #2: Pop Never Asked For Your Permission

And now it’s taking over your walls, your memories, and your collector’s guilt.

This post is part of POP BEFORE PLASTIC, a visual archive of paintings and drawings that feel like Art Toys— even if they never wanted to be.

Because not everything that shaped the Art Toy movement came in vinyl. Some of it came in brushstrokes, graffiti, saturated colors, commercial noise, and mutated memories. Some of it—like these two paintings by VIOLA—looks you in the eye and dares you to call it “cute.”

Let’s not be polite about it:

VIOLA doesn’t paint “pop culture.” He dissects it, overloads it, weaponizes it. Two paintings. No hierarchy. No breathing room. Just saturation, contradiction, and visual conflict. Just like your brain after two decades of dopamine-fueled collecting.

🌟 PAINTING 1: Narrative Breakdown

Arale Norimaki crashes into the frame like a chaotic memory you forgot you had. Porco Rosso floats underneath—nostalgic, melancholic, untouchable. Between them? A geometric interference that says: “You thought this made sense. It doesn’t.”

🌀 Childhood meets surreal logic. 🌀 The innocent and the cynical collapse together. 🌀 And suddenly, you don’t know what to feel.

This isn’t anime nostalgia. This is emotional noise, visualized. It’s not cute. It’s overwhelming—and that’s exactly the point.

🚨 PAINTING 2: Cruzcampo, Baby Shark & Other Headaches (Human Evolution)

Let’s list the ingredients: 🟢 A beer brand. 🔵 Baby Shark graffiti. 🔶 Mickey Mouse pointing—accusing, looping. 🔸 Anime faces filled with erotic confusion and emotional static. 🔴 A screaming red cartoon skull. 🟡 A bird that doesn’t belong here. And in the middle? A thick stripe of silence. (Too blue to ignore.)

It’s less “composition,” more psychological report.

This isn’t a visual narrative. It’s a moodboard of your digital existence. What you scroll through. What you consume. What consumes you back.

💬 Why This Isn’t About Art Toys (But Kind Of Is)

Because Art Toys aren’t just collectibles. They’re artifacts of the same pop invasion these paintings expose. They’re the physical embodiment of:

🧠 Fragmented identities 🎨 Mass culture reappropriated 💣 Playful forms used for deep psychological warfare

Collectors who understand Art Toys don’t just collect vinyl. They collect impact. They collect reflections of a culture spinning out of control—the same one VIOLA paints, cuts, and rebuilds.

So no—these paintings aren’t Art Toys. They’re what happens when the same aesthetic tension breaks free from vinyl and spills onto paper.

They don’t play. They attack.

And yes… they belong on your wall. Just like any toy that dared to feel too much.

Don't worry, you and me won't be alone no more.

A more photorealistic illustration of Viola (the larger kee) and Sunbeam (the smaller kee) comforting one another.

This illustration gives a better indication of what kee integument is like. They are covered in feathery, insect-like scales, which tend to stop growing on areas with scarring. They also have a naked patch surrounding their mouth and eyes. Their eyes are highly mobile and chameleon-like, but are not capable of independent movement. Like terran animals kee use hemoglobin in their blood, giving their exposed flesh a pinkish hue.

Both Sunbeam and Viola have some amount of facial scarring but Viola's is more extensive. Viola's left tympanum (the crescent shaped structure behind it's eye, used for hearing) has damage which makes it hard of hearing on that side and predisposes it to infections.

Here's a couple of in-progress pics showing my original sketch and preliminary shading. Also some marginalia. I did this whole piece in Procreate on the ipad.

It was such a joy to be able to work on this show, I'm so excited for everyone to be able to watch it for the first time! It's such a sweet and heartfelt story, but also jam packed with action and amazingly detailed minis 👀
