Violet’s Winter Bird, Tiki Inspired Cocktail at Virtue Cider
We debuted ‘Violet’s Winter Bird’ last Saturday, it sold well. I had a lot of fun developing this one. Rare Tea Cellar flipped me a sample of their Tropical Spiced Clementine a while back. After tasting it, I thought that it would make a pretty delicious Tiki cocktail with the right cider. I also love the color and the violet froth. The Aleppo pepper on top gives it a slight spicy kick.
Above is Charlie Mosterd making the cocktail. He also shot & edited the video for IG. In addition to working behind the bar, Charlie will be helping shape the content for our farm.

Starfall in Autumn
Eris x Rhysand’s sister!reader
Summary: based on the prompt for @starfallweek “characters a and b realize they won’t make it to Starfall. They make the most of what they have to celebrate”
Warnings: pregnancy mentioned as a plot device to keep us in Autumn 🫡, Eris being down bad
Upon your engagement, you told Eris that you wanted to incorporate Night Court traditions into your life here in Autumn. One such tradition included attending your home court’s annual Starfall Ball.
Your favorite night of the year, bringing Eris along to spend the evening with your family. The first few years were tense, and while your family is far from accepting him with loving arms, they do have common ground they can discuss and safe topics for all parties to avoid any fights or arguments.
Usually Eris would spend most of the evening with you or Lucien, but a few years ago he and Nesta began an annual traditional chess match. The two were quite evenly matched, the both of them ignoring everyone in concentration.
This year, however, you were stuck in Autumn, unable to get dressed up. The one night of the year you donned Night Court attire, instead staying in comfortable slippers and a simple black dress.
You were close to your due date, the next heir of Autumn in your womb, and they were much too large for you to winnow comfortably anymore. An unfortunate fact you discovered two months ago on a trip with Lucien, your brother in law suffering the consequences of your motion sickness.
You and Eris made the decision then on no more winnowing, and the Night Court was simply too far away to travel by carriage or horse this far along in your pregnancy.
So the two of you stayed behind, the crisp air, faint smell of apples, and the red and orange leaves doing nothing to soothe the homesickness you felt deep in the pits of your stomach.
Autumn didn’t celebrate Starfall - you couldn’t see any of the beautiful colors that fill the night sky here, not a trace of starlight anywhere.
Eris held your hands as you sat on a blanket, the crunching of leaves as your body hits the earth. You watch the sky as you feel your mate’s warmth next to you.
“Er, what are we doing out here?”
“Patience is a virtue, my love,” he replies, kissing your hand.
“Since when have you been so concerned with being virtuous?”
He leans up, a hand lying across his knee. He looks so relaxed when you knew he had been anything but. Eris was incredibly experienced in caring for babes, having helped raise all of his brothers.
His least favorite part was always the labor. He’d pace outside of his mother’s chambers, his father nowhere to be seen until after the ‘inconvenient part’, as Beron described it. His thoughts would lead him to the worst conclusion, preparing himself to lose his mother, the only softness he’s ever experienced in the world.
And now he was crippled with those same anxieties about you. He swallows those fears down, saving them for later. Now was about you.
“I’m preparing to be a father, dear, I have to put on a front at least.”
He pulls out a bottle of apple cider from the basket next to you two, along with two glasses. He gestures the bottle to you, and you nod. He pours your glass and hands it to you before pouring himself a glass.
You hum as the cool liquid slides down your throat, leaning into Eris as he wraps an arm around you.
You breathe in the cool autumn air, a faint smell of bonfires in the distance. You watch the stars as they twinkle, reminding you of your childhood, of Starfalls past with Rhysand.
Eris senses your nostalgia through the bond, and tightens his grip on you. You notice a few other fae in the clearing, bringing their own blankets, snacks, and children.
“I thought the Autumn Court didn’t celebrate Starfall?” You ask, eyes finding Eris’s amber ones in the dark.
He exhales, the movement of his chest rubbing against you, “we do now.”
Your gaze on Eris was interrupted by a large boom on the other side of the clearing. You look for the source, assuming you’re under some form of attack, until the sky lights up in beautiful shades of red, shining so brightly against the night sky. The red scatters across the sky, fizzling out, making way for the next boom, this one followed by a green light display.
“What is this?” You ask, unable to look away, never seeing anything like it before.
“Well, during the war we were experimenting with new weapons, and one of our scientists invented this powder. We’ve only been able to use it for these big, beautiful displays.”
“Truthfully, they’ve been sitting in storage for years. Beautiful, but not very useful for the war. When we decided on staying here for the holiday, I was trying to find ways to make the day memorable for you.”
You pull your eyes away from the display in the sky, Eris’s pale face lit up in shades of green and yellow light. “Er, you big softie,” you choke out, tears threatening to spill out at the gesture.
It wasn’t the Starfalls of your youth, running around with Rhysand or Cassian, the Illyrians flying you into the stardust until you were covered in it.
It wasn’t your childhood, it was new. And perhaps this would be your children’s childhood - starfalls spent under the manufactured displays, so different from the real thing, but beautiful in such a unique way.
He inhales through his nose, trying not to take the bait, but he knew you were right. He was still rigid and untrusting, but you had smoothed out so many of his rough edges over the years.
“I am what you have made me, my love.”

Appalachian Traditions from my Father
My dad and his relatives came from the Netherlands, however, when they arrived in America they settled in the Appalachia's. Many of my relatives on his side still remain in those mountains, and thus, continue practicing the rich traditions of one of the oldest mountain ranges. Here I will document some of those old-fashioned remedies and superstitions:
Remedies:
To cure a fever take a bulb's worth of garlic, and a few layers of the largest onion you have on hand and wrap them in a cloth as if you were rolling up dough to cut fresh linguini. Sinch each end with a piece of twine. Take a hammer and with all your rage beat the cloth into a pulp. Once the contents are sufficiently mashed tie the cloth around the wrists, right over the pulse. Leave the poor man's poultice in place until the fever reduces. It should take effect in around an hour.
Headache bandages were one of my great-grandmother's go to remedies to enjoy during a nice warm winter night after a long day of hard work. It would take away any symptoms of a sore head swiftly. First, grab one or two paper bags and cut them widthwise into long, thick strands of brown paper. They should be long enough to stretch across the front of your forehead and onto the sides of your temples. heat up some apple cider vinegar so that it is warm but not hot. Drench the strips of paper in the vinegar like you are making paper mache. Then, apply the strips onto your forehead so that it is thoroughly covered and pat them down with a washcloth. Cover the strips with a headband or bandanna so that they do not drip onto your hair or face, and leave in place until the soreness is gone.
Throat salve is a cozy drink we used to make to sooth a soar throat. First, combine the juice of one lemon with a cup of water. Boil the lemon water on the stove. Once it is boiling add a tablespoon or two of honey depending on your own preferences. I typically add two as it cuts the sourness of the lemon, plus the honey is good for you. Boil the mixture until it is all combined and serve hot in a mug. You may garnish it with a lemon slice to make it feel fancy.
Sunburn Soother is a simple thing to make. Begin by picking some fresh sage, and lavender if it is in bloom from your garden. Get about two cups of water boiling, and add the herbs. Boil it until a strong tincture is made. Make a similar tincture out of black tea too. I usually leave both boiling until there is just a bit of liquid left in each. Get about a cup of fresh aloe (or bottled, either works so long as it doesn't contain alcohol) and combine it with your tinctures. Once thoroughly mixed apply to the sunburn liberally as needed.
Vicks Vaporub is a cure all as my granny says. Got a cough? slather it on your feet and cover them with socks before going to bed. Anoint yourself with Vicks while doing the sign of the cross to cast out and protect from evil. Congested? Rub it under your nose and on your chest. Going near a decaying animal carcass? shove some in the openings of your nostrils to prevent that god awful scent. Need to fake cry at your enemies funeral? Dab some of that good ol' Vicks Vaporub underneath your eyes. It can even be used to oil a squeaky door. If you don't have a jar that is older than you and somehow still full, go buy one on amazon! Vicks is the gift that keeps on giving.
Superstitions:
Minding your own business is a powerful thing in the dusk draped skies of the Appalachian forests. Whether you hear your name called out on your evening walk, or seeing your neighbor walk to his barn late at night, keep your head down. It don't involve you now, does it? Whether you believe it's a cryptid out there ready to strike, or the moonshiners up to their hobbies, leave them be. Live and let live is the word of the wind, and thus is the virtue of Appalachian life.
Is your ear itching? That means someone has spoken your name. Pay attention to which ear is tingling. If it is your right, they are speaking truthfully about you. They may even put in a good word. However, if it is your left, they are spreading gossip and speaking ill of you. If this is the case, carry a sprig of rosemary on you until five days have passed since the last tingle of your left ear. This will protect you from any ill will sent your way.
The pillows of the dead often contain a wreath of feathers known as an angels crown. Often, it is believed that they signify your loved one being allowed into heaven. However, if you find one in the pillow of a living soul it may signify that their time is near. That is why it is so important to fluff your pillows each night, as you want to break up any budding wreaths before they lay claim to your life.
Drinking alone is never acceptable. Whether it is tea or scotch, be sure to pour a little out on the ground to quench the spirits. I always keep a small clay figurine by the kettle to give a drop of tea to in the morning. Drinking without offering some to the nearby spirits could upset them.
Iron nails can be strong protective amulets. Whether you nail them into the corners of your bedroom or fashion a cross out of them, they provide strong protection against malevolent spirits and evil forces. Superstitions around iron from Appalachia are quite similar to those spoken about in my post the magic of scissors.
Witches marks are said to protect your home from malicious spells and witchcraft. They can be easily fashioned out of sticks by making a five-pointed star with sticks and strings. Place this above the entrance of the home to ward off evil.
While many of these superstitions and remedies are shared around the world, my dads family from the Appalachians continue to practice these folk practices, and thus they remain a strong part of the culture in such an isolated and harsh environment. Many folks from the Appalachian mountains continue to practice folk healing and magic due to the isolated nature of many parts. They take care of their own, you know? The mountains provide a unique environment where the woods truly have some unique powers. While I myself do not reside in those hills, my ancestors on his side did and I continue to practice their ways to connect to them and their homeland. I fondly remember my trips to visit family in the region and the unique culture that fosters there.

on returning
was thinking about the intricacies of reisz being a [nemesis spoiler], and defined how that... works exactly. added some new rules for my playthrough too.
(TL;DR in red)
i didnt canonize my old returned one idea right away bc unfortunately my brand of autism makes me care about canon compliance with my own oc stuff-- i even decided to be extreme abt it with the ghostie's account for fun: 98% of the actions i take in-game + the descriptions given to me are canon whether i like it or not! i worried that'd clash with the possible canon about returned loved ones & being resurrected, info i do not have access to. (if there is even any tbh. from what i gathered the aftermath is pretty vague?)
...but then i realised that the FLPC, by virtue of being the FLPC, is already the most specialest blorbo ever. the canon + logic surrounding death, wounds, and healing thereof doesn't apply to the FLPC the same way it applies to NPCs.
so. technically. going by my own rules. being a returned one it's not actually that far-fetched???¿¿? it's a way one can explain why the FLPC Cannot be permakilled. all FLPCs are, by the end of the day, mechanically immortal. well then. whatever. (cracks knuckles) let's go all in.
the ghostie, none the wiser: I'm here for a good time, not a long time! me: lol
wait, but the FLPC still dies!
they do indeed! going to the boat is the very proof of that process. the FLPC is sturdy as all hell but still gets lethally hurt. here's how I'm reasoning it: the magic only kicks in when the body falls apart. (also i think the boatman simply can't row them to the far shore bc of it lmao.)
it's less of an invulnerability thing and more of a phoenix thing: you moult away your damaged shell and come back to life to a fresh healthy body regenerated anew from your own remains.
(i was uncertain whether to make it so the damaged parts get entirely rebuilt or if something is left behind. since there apparently are hijinks in which the FLPC leaves behind body parts ill cover my bases)
this was how reisz was able to carry so many scars for so long. this is how they lived for almost two years with multiple sequelae of traumatic brain injury that, although diminished with time, never went away. they survived with their normal metabolism (being buried alive ended in a boatman ex machina, so they didn't smash their head in enough for their brains to spill all out. but they were very close. in evolution it was rather unclear whether the ex machina happened as well or if we simply finally starved to death).
there was no need for the cider that remade their flesh & imbues their cells to get to work, which is only when something extreme that would permakill anyone else happens.
like being torn to pieces by a zee-monster.
(before & after status illustrated below.)
tfw you lose part of the identity you didn't even realize you had, rip.
hence my new rule! :D reisz' body gets soft-reset every time i get them killed too dead. i enjoy drawing scars on characters that lead dangerous lives, and reisz abruptly discovered they quite cherished the ones they used to have (each one was a memory after all: the trajectory of their short-lived life), so that's some low stakes Consequences for me to be mindful of. hehe.
design-wise am gonna miss their anisocoria though 😔 the mismatched slit pupils made them look so silly
aside from the whole uhhh reviving from your own gore thing, rei gets a few bonus freak vitality points that could be suspicious when you look back knowing there's something... off about them, but would raise little alarm on its own. they:
heal much faster than other people, often skipping the inflammatory response stage altogether (i.e. the FLPC being able to go from Agony and Desperation to Scratches and Bruises in a matter of a few actions, leaving no consequence whatsoever)
build tolerance stupidly fast and can't Actually get drunk (or hangover) for long. same with drugs :(
have never been sick. not a single cold. (just bc i genuinely dont remember a single mention of the FLPC getting sick? food poisoning is a whole other thing, and even that is rare)
a completely broken, mayhaps even missing, sense of fear. which in hindsight? explains a lot about the way they live their life.
these ^ are mostly from extrapolating what supercharging your white cells with immortal juice could result in, but there's an extra:
that weird fondness for bones & skeletons that makes them impulsively bring home whatever abandoned body part they come across? it stems from the fact that. well. reisz Was bones. reisz might not remember but the body always does.
#typing all this as a ref for myself tbh. technically a first draft. might have to tweak the mechanics as i find out more canon lore info#the whole evolution storyline gets a whole other narrative angle with them being Like That which pleases my brain a lot lol.#its a good thing that monster didnt destroy their head or else they'd get back from the boat memory wiped again i think#memories arent a biological/tangible part of your brain to be restored that way...#nemesis spoilers#fallen london#fallen london oc#the twilight phantom#chainrambles#originally i just made them have an inexplicable fondness for bones bc i needed a logical justification for the FLPC's inventory lmao.#what does someone that does Not deal in the bone market need 52 huge ass jurassic femurs for. why do you keep 8 random human arms rei.#sure 15 of these headless skeletons were gifts from the embassy but why did you carry 8 severely decomposed corpses home.????#pleased to have found a Lore Answer for it now. theres a Feeling in their chest when rei comes across these sorts of abandoned dead things#this is where their empathy went apparently

9 People I'd Like To Know Better
Thanks for the tag @antariies! :D
Last song I listened to: something on classical radio
Favorite color: hmm, I think I would go with peachy pink
Currently watching: I don't really watch shows, I watch Twitch for pleasant background entertainment. So right now it's Cider Spider, the guy who made a viral and endlessly quotable series of FFXIV meme videos involving a very angry lalafell. (note: I don't play XIV at all, nor do I want to.)
Sweet/spicy/savory: I have the spice tolerance of your average white person. The other two are in a tie.
Last thing I Googled: a Discord conversation made me think of an old classmate, so I decided to see if she's on social media at all. No dice, but I hope she's doing well!
Current obsessions: I have a rotation of special interests and IRL fashion is at the front right now. Honestly, I have to give GW2 credit for helping me build and describe my own aesthetic sense.
I have not been in the loop about this tag game either, so I have No Clue Who To Tag but uhhh hi @astralarias @friesian @khorren @evilpol @nyoka-gorefell @miragecounseling @virtue-of-justice @cerus @elderdragonapologist
(oh hey cool I think Tumblr is only letting people tag 5 at a time :/)

PROMPT 9 from napowrimo.net
Like music, poetry offers us a way to play with and experience sound. This can be through meter, rhyme, varying line lengths, assonance, alliteration, and other techniques that call attention not just to the meaning of words, but the way they echo and resonate against each other. For a look at some of these sound devices in action, read Robert Hillyer’s poem, Fog. It uses both rhyme and uneven line lengths to create a slow, off-kilter rhythm that heightens the poem’s overall ominousness. Today we’d like to challenge you to try writing a poem of your own that uses rhyme, but without adhering to specific line lengths. For extra credit, reference a very specific sound, like the buoy in Hillyer’s poem.

By Dawn's Early Light

I liked this one quite a lot! Which somewhat surprised me, because it is a military episode through and through, we're on a cadet training camp and the murderer killed one of the like board of director guys because he (the murderer) is such a hardcore military guy and wants a strong army to be trained here but the victim wanted a college instead. Like I'm on the victim's side here, fuck the military and all that, this really like "the military are an unproblematic good for the nation" angle shouldn't be and isn't my shit, and tbf the one that's expousing that virtue is of course our murderer after all, so like yeah. But no it's got a lot of good sleuthing from Columbo and nice characterful moments for the decently sized cast that the episode follows, although it's mostly about Columbo, our murderer, and a young rebellious cadet boy that the murderer is trying to pin things on. What's interesting is this isn't really an episode where Columbo has his suspect right out the gate, Rumford (the murderer btw) is like very cooperative even in spite of the attempted framing of the cadet boy, he and Columbo actually get on pretty well, with Rumford having a lot of respect for Columbo. I like noted down for myself that I wanted to remember to mention the scene wherein Rumford asks Columbo if he has a first name, A) because that's funny and Columbo says "yeah I do" and then doesn't tell him it, and B) because it leads into a moment wherein Rumford just genuinely like opens his heart to Columbo about what the uniform means to him and how he wants to be able to retire to his garden and take care of things but his ideal for the country is more important than that. Yeah it's nationalist as hell but in the context of a character in the fiction for this show from the 70s it was compelling, you know? I did like the overarching background narrative of the cider brewing although I will say while it was a net good to tie that into the gotcha I think the gotcha itself is rather weak, like it's a lot of "he said/they said" type stuff that doesn't really feel like it implicates Rumford all that strongly. Not a bad gotcha at all and not one that like ruins the episode or anything so damning but really just not far enough for how much I enjoyed the rest of the episode.
#columbo#28.2.25#i think this might be the only columbo episode i watched this month i'd have to double check

BACKGROUND:
Nina grew up in a chaotic home with a strict, controlling mother and a father who made it clear he had wanted sons. Her mother, with her military background, always needed to know where Nina was, while her father treated her more like a soldier than a daughter.
He never cared about her being fragile or needing affection. Instead, he taught her how to fight, defend herself, and never take crap from anyone. Makeup, crushes, and typical childhood fun weren’t part of her life.
She turned out a bit of a tomboy, and she was fine with that. She’s blunt, speaks her mind, and doesn’t care what others think. With her tough upbringing, a career in law enforcement seemed like the perfect fit—she thrived on adrenaline and chasing down danger.
The one good thing from Nina’s childhood was her best friend, Marlana. She would follow her anywhere and stand by her no matter what. So when Marlana planned a spring break trip for their friend group, Nina was all in. But what was supposed to be a fun night of partying quickly turned into a nightmare.
They unknowingly stumbled upon an organized crime scene, and before Nina could process it, she was watching Marlana clutch her injured brother in shock. That night changed everything. Suddenly, they were on the run, hunted by dangerous people, which eventually led them to Hiraeth.
Nina never felt strongly about Vice or Virtue, but she followed Marlana without question. Now, she’s taken on the role of a bodyguard, willing to do whatever it takes to protect the people she cares about.

I want somebody to walk around the mall with on a rainy day, staring at the mirrored ceilings and discussing the virtues and flaws of 80s design. I want someone to dress up in needlessly elegant outfits with and play scrabble for hours on end while sipping sparkling cider from plastic dollar tree champagne flutes. I want someone to get lost in the deepest corners of an antique store with, losing all concept of time and forgetting the outside world. I want to be understood, if it's possible.

Menopause, Sex After 40, and A Helpful Hunk: Navigating Women's Sexual Health
In the journey of a woman's life, navigating menopause and embracing sexuality after 40 can present both challenges and opportunities. As hormonal changes take center stage, understanding how to maintain a fulfilling sex life becomes essential. Here, we delve into the realms of hormonal shifts, intimate discomforts, and the role of a supportive partner in enhancing sexual wellness.

Hormonal Changes and Life Events:
Menopause, a natural phase in a woman's life, brings about significant hormonal fluctuations. Estrogen levels decline, leading to symptoms like vaginal dryness and decreased libido. Life events such as childbirth or certain medical conditions can hasten these changes, impacting sexual desire and comfort.
Diminished Interest and Intimate Discomfort:
It's not uncommon for women to experience a diminished interest in intercourse during menopause. Moreover, pain and discomfort can accompany sexual activity due to vaginal dryness and thinning of vaginal tissues. These factors can contribute to a reluctance to engage in intimacy.
The Role of a Supportive Partner:

In today's modern world, patience is indeed a virtue, especially in the realm of sexual intimacy. Fortunately, there are ways partners can support each other through this journey. Quality lubricants, estrogen, and testosterone creams can alleviate discomfort and enhance pleasure. Moreover, finding a partner willing to prioritize foreplay and stimulate the mind can make all the difference.
The Importance of Communication:

Effective communication is key to overcoming barriers to intimacy. Women should feel empowered to express their needs and desires openly with their partners. This includes advocating for activities like cunnilingus, which can provide pleasure without penetration, thereby reducing discomfort.
Holistic Approaches to Sexual Wellness:

Maintaining overall health and hydration is crucial for sexual wellness. Incorporating hydrating fluids like water into your daily routine can improve vaginal lubrication. Additionally, incorporating natural remedies like apple cider vinegar and papaya into your diet can enhance vitality and libido.
The Role of Massage:

Lastly, prioritizing self-care through regular massages can have profound benefits for both physical and emotional well-being. A soothing massage can relieve tension, enhance relaxation, and foster intimacy between partners.
