This is. Hmm. Decidedly more orange than I was anticipating, I thought it would be more of a medium brown. This is definitely more terracotta than cinnamon to me.
However! It does drape beautifully, almost feels like a heavy silk crepe. Not at all as flimsy as I thought viscose was going to be. I have confronted my prejudice, realized the error of my ways and am grateful for the opportunity to adjust my views.

Giving muted carrot vibes but it works I think. it's going on the inside anyway, who cares.
As for the wool, I finally washed it! No machine washing this time, I gave it a not-so-gentle soak in the bathtub with laundry detergent and hot water. I walked all over it, whacked it a bit for good measure, but that didn't achieve much besides making the fabric less stiff.

pre wash left, post wash right.
This is fine as I wanted to preserve the twill diagonals and overall rough look, and didn't want to felt it. I finished it with a lanolin bath, which did improve the softness of the fabric immensely.

back in 2022 I made a sewn board binding of an Uprooted typeset I received through the annual @renegadeguild exchange in 2021, typset by Æthereal Press. In 2023 I received another Uprooted typeset through the exchange, this time typeset by Wild Woofs Press, so I decided to make it match the first one.

ends: 100gsm eco-craft oatmeal
spine: linen/viscose natural cloth backed with paper
cover: 4/0 Pepin (2017 Art Nouveau) of dubious weight over 160gsm Canaletto 20% cotton & acid free bookpaper and 1mm board
the breakaway spine came out much better this time (I have done a lot of breakaway spines at this point! practise may not make perfect but it does correlate with improvement). I did have to re-sew the textblock because I forgot to sew on the boards, but luckily I realised this before I glued the spine, so it was no big deal to cut the thread off and sew the block again.

EA: Water Walking
NRG: generates many high viscosity bubbles in all directions. Not lethal, but definitely annoying considering they're basically floating balls of glue/tar
Size
EA: Perfect Size. Is always naturally the right size. Door frame too low? Naturally becomes shorter. Crowd blocking his view? Instantly becomes tall enough to see over them.
NRG: Theres only one idea, but its kinda mid (Elasticity). The only other one is shrinking so much, temporarily, that the user can essentially teleport. Think kinda like Ant-Man with the Quantum Dimension, only less "hey here's an invisible microscopic world" and more "lemme shrink so much that I can just blip from one building to another one nearby." idk theres no good options I feel
Propulsion
EA: Propelled Punch. Can launch propulsive energy with physical moves. Think MHA Air Force
NRG: Bound and Rebound. For a time, they will propel themself off of any surface. Like a pinball. Horrifying in tight spaces.
Figment
EA: Never Alone. Whenever they're alone, no they're not. At least one clone is with them if theres no one else around (that they known of at least, won't detect hidden people)
NRG: Me's A Crowd. Makes a seemingly infinite amount of copies. He makes a few copies, which each also make a few copies, etc. Think MHA Twice Sad Man Parade
Balance
EA: naturally well balanced, always lands on their feet, difficult to trip up, etc
NRG: Imbalance. Those around the user become very unbalanced, like they have sea legs.
Decay
EA: Unstable. Objects they hold are naturally more brittle. Think reverse Fusion EA
NRG: Vaporize. Everything within an inch of the user is decayed. Floor, walls, life, etc. But only within an inch, otherwise this would be WAY too powerful, especially for what's already the most lethal element in Ninjago history! (Sorry Destruction and Poison, you've been outdone.)

Size: EA- This seems hilarious on a first glance but can you IMAGINE the life improvement that would come from this jgfhdgsds NA- I kinda like the Elasticity idea! It's kind of like changing your size without changing our size, in. way! But there's also nothing wrong with temporarily blipping to another dimension either jhgfds
Propulsion: EA- Nice! And fitting! NA- That DOES sound horrifying. I love it!
Figment: EA- Also horrifying! But maybe comforting for them to some degree (also I totally forgot what figment was for a sec hnnng) NA- ...and of course, taking things to the opposite extreme! Though there's not a whole lot we can do with this one to begin with, so this is probably the best route to take
Balance: EA- Yes! Precisely what I'd been thinking xD NA- And again, the inversion! Which I also like!
Decay: EA- "EVERYTHING I TOUCH DIIIIIIES" NA- Yeah man this really is like if Destruction and Poison had baby lmao
I also would like to see more from those other elements before making any sweeping claims about them!

PAPER DOLL by Mel Calero
If Borrasca was unusual, then this one is niche. Shout out to alumni of the Sims 2 Story Exchange, for whom this will be a blast from the past 💚 If you had a popular fantasy or legacy series on that platform, I probably signed your guestbook or gave you benes on the forum at some point. God, I'm getting old.
PAPER DOLL was one of the works of fiction published on the official Sims 2 website, which was shut down in 2009 by EA causing the loss of thousands of uploads. Unless authors were particularly diligent in backing up their story uploads on other platforms, most published stories died with the website and are no longer available.

Thankfully, some forward-thinking souls had the sense to back up a selection of the uploads before the website went down for good. These can be accessed here. It's where I rediscovered PAPER DOLL, which was peak fiction to me when it was uploaded c. 2007-2008.
The beauty of the Sims 2 Story Exchange was that text uploads were accompanied by illustrative screenshots from the game. PAPER DOLL was one of the more stylised uploads to the platform. The custom content might seem crunchy now, but at the time it looked premium (given we were all on XP or Vista graphics). Realistic skins, eyes, hair and outfits were very much the trend back then. The author (melcalero) had a eye for aesthetic and style that holds up.

Anyway, it's a reading experience I hold dear and a story I wanted to archive physically. I made the decision not to include any of the game screenshots, out of consideration for my printer cartridges, but I included all published text with some editorial changes (spell checking, consistency revisions etc). It's technically unfinished (was a part 7 shared off the Exchange?? I could be misremembering) but part 6 rounds off the story nicely enough.
PAPER DOLL is a dark romance set in Japan, featuring both American and Japanese characters and a marriage of convenience/fake dating plotline. It's of its time, but I remain fond of it. There's depth to the network of relationships between the two leads and supporting characters.
My decision to pursue borderless printing for the sake of style near broke me. I had to print single sided because my printer can't handle duplex and borderless printing. Between that and a series of misprints, there were more discarded pages than properly printed sheets overall. The edge-to-edge background graphics turned out well, but I'd be wary of doing it for another project.
Garamond 10pt for the body text, and the iconic BLEEDING COWBOYS for all title and heading text. The finished typeset is about 260 pages long and in the ballpark of 60,000 words. I went a bit nuts on vector graphics as you can see, but it's in keeping with the original version's aesthetic. Cover is bound in uncoated viscose bookcloth, while the textblock is printed on "cream" A4 printer paper. I'd hoped before purchasing this would be closer to an off white colour. I now have too much of this paper, so it'll likely feature in future binds despite being A Vibe 🍊

I made a few mistakes on this bind, but I think an improvement in skill is noticeable too. Most conspicuous is a rip right at the edge of the front cover, which I can't do much to address. It kinda works with the grungy title font so I'm not that pressed about it.
The bookmark ribbon was an afterthought and added after the headbands, which I don't think is industry standard. I quite like my scene kid pink 'n' black headbands, plus the vinyl layering I did for the cover titles and illustration. I was still chugging along with adhesive vinyl but the application went better than previous attempts.
Lastly, I attempted to trim the textblock with a chisel. The chisel was in no way sharp enough when I started out, and even subsequent sharpening couldn't rescue the edges. They are even, but remain decked in places. I don't hate the result, but it took wayy too long and left me with repetitive strain which took days to heal. I might try again on my next novel-length bind, but I'm considering investigating if a local print shop will trim text blocks for a nominal price.
Anyway, 'scuse the long post. I was enthusiastic about revisiting an old favourite of mine. Plus it's worth talking about old, dead websites that evoke nostalgia. On the off chance melcalero sees this, I'm more than happy to provide them with an author copy if they reach out 🌸

Period sex

Dear fellow menstruating people who have or had sex during menstruation. I have gone down a rabbit hole: I am currently taking part in Kinktober. One prompt: (Day 17) period sex.
So I wrote a story – using the 'trope' of blood as a natural lubricant. During my research I often read that menstrual sex is more pleasurable because of the 'extra lubrication'. I was editing my story and everything I wrote just felt wrong. So I read some older stories about this trope. Problem: I can't agree with them. Firstly, my personal experience, and secondly, I am an engineer. So let's try to science/engineer the shit out of it: There are basically two problems here 1. Periodic flow is a good lubricant 2. Extra lubricant from period flow improves sex
1. Technically, lubrication is used to reduce friction. When you need lubrication for specific purposes, you have to consider the many specific properties of the lubricant (e.g. density, viscosity, demulsibility, etc.). Normally, the wetness of an aroused woman is enough to reduce skin-to-skin friction and make the encounter enjoyable. She has the perfect density and viscosity for this. (Dry sex is no fun, e.g. sex after removing a tampon).
A good artificial lubricant for sex is designed to reduce skin-to-skin friction over a long period of time (no drying out, stays where it is applied). Water, for example, might seem like a good idea, but no. Mainly because it has a very low viscosity (it also promotes corrosion, but that's not relevant here). Anyone who has gone down a water slide knows that skin contact on the slide slows you down. You can even get stuck. The water is pushed out from under you and you have high friction. (That's why I don't like sex in water - but that's another topic.) I quote my old professor: "Water is for cooling, not for lubricating" - to be fair, that was said in a different context.
The 'period flow' is basically just normal blood (which is actually watered down compared to the blood in your veins) and some of the cervical mucus that needs to be flushed out. It's not even a perfect emulsion (if you use a menstrual cup, you may have noticed that the consistency is quite uneven). To be on the safe side, let's take the properties of the worst component of this imperfect emulsion: Blood. It behaves like water. And (I repeat) water is not a good lubricant.
2. When a woman gets her period, there's some additional lubrication to her natural wetness (when aroused), but it's minimal. Period flow is often overestimated. It's a total of 60 ml (we could calculate an hourly flow), but let's make it easy and estimate a constant flow of the whole amount for a whole day, so 2.5 ml per hour. Or half a teaspoon per hour. This is really not a lot of 'extra' lubricant (and we have been very generous in our calculations).
Now we put the two together:
The problem now is mixing them. When you mix lubricants, their properties change. Ask petrolheads about motor oil - you'll get a free lecture. Or ask my old professor: "Mixing lubricants reduces their performance".
When you have sex during your period, two types of lubricant mix together. The natural everyday lubricant (perfect lubrication) and the "period flow" (poor quality additive). This reduces the overall quality of your lubrication during your period. Basically, the blood makes your vagina more watery. This means that sex during your period has more friction due to the poorer quality of the lubricant. A little more quantity might compensate for the poor quality of the mixed lubricant, but don't count on it.
Conclusion:
At best, sex during your period will be like sex at any other time because the amount of extra blood is so small (but maybe the thought of it will turn you on and make you wetter), at worst it will just hurt because of too much friction.
So, if this were a risk management scenario: to be on the safe side, use lubricant.
Sorry if I destroyed any kink fantasies.
Full disclosure: I haven't found any scientific papers on the lubricating properties of period flow vs. natural lubrication, (just a paper on whether women like having sex during their period) but please let me know if you know of any.

Liquid Computing
Delta tricked Beta into drinking Powerade. While there wasn’t a terrible outcome, there wasn’t a great one. Let’s just say I had to clean up something best described as Liquid Metal.
I decided,l to examine its properties, even though it made me feel weird. It turns out this material is actually useful! It’s a sort of liquid state drive, allowing storage of digital media. How it works, I’m unsure. It doesn’t change renders under a microscope, it isn’t flammable, and it is about as viscous as water. It also doesn’t seem to freeze at low temperatures, although its viscosity increases.
An interesting effect occurs when the material absorbs data: it becomes more solid the more files it contains. At maximum capacity (about 256GB per liter) it hardens completely, becoming strong enough to ignore TA2. I am thinking of creating some molds of useful tools and improving my equipment, so I’m planning a craft store trip for tomorrow.
When I reintroduced Beta to the hardened material, they were able to reintegrate to themselves. They also had access to the data I stored within. Most of that data was a copy of Remington-Gede’s manuscript. Beta seemed to find it interesting, and is now attempting to output it. Since they don’t have a word processor installed, it has been… interesting and noisy.
In other news, Alpha now has sunglasses, and they are working with Remington-Gede to try and reproduce the Neo Dodge from The Matrix. The two of them have gone a little wacky from movie night, but I’m glad they’re bonding.
