So baffled by the fact that Wikipedia lists Hozier as a baritone. Like just because he doesn't sound like Justin Bieber or any other teenybopper ass white boy doesn't change the fact that that man is cleanly belting C5s on the regular. He rarely ever goes below D3 too. Tenors are allowed to have richness to their voice

I need someone to give me one good reason why the Contralto voice type is so ignored, hated, and given literally NOTHING in the world of musical theatre.

In terms of vocal type, is Michael Crawford's singing voice best described as Counter Tenor, Lyric Tenor, or something else entirely?
I’d describe his voice as a lyric tenor.
It is a high and light tenor voice, but to be a countertenor he’d have to constantly sing in falsetto, which he only does on certain notes.

So someone got me on my bullshit. And I'm just gonna put this out here for the masses. HUGH JACKMAN IS A BARITONE. He shouldn't be playing tenors cause he's voice is deeper than a tenor and it sounds so fucking strained.
This is Alfie Bowie singing Bring Him Home. Hear the clarity and ease.
Whereas here is Hugh singing something I think he sounds good on. It's just a little lower, and honestly, Curly is still a tenor role but a much more manageable tenor role. You don't hear that strain he has while as JVJ.
Compare to Hugh Jackman singing the same song. You can hear from the beginning that he is STRUGGLING. You can hear the tension in his vocal cords trying to get up that high.
Another song he sounds good on. And again, a manageable, old school, tenor role.
He may be a tenor in golden age shows, but musical theater nowadays wants insanity from it's tenors and he can not unfortunately provide it. He's a modern baritone and people need to realize it.

I have a question maybe you can help with me with. I’m not musically trained and I suppose that makes me an amateur singer. However how would I find out what range I am? I don’t have a the slightest idea what I am. I say because I’m female but sometimes singing alto is difficult a friend said I’m contralto but I’m not sure what I could be. Any thoughts on how I could figure it out?
I’ve got a little tip that might help!
But first, please remember that classifying someone as soprano/mezzo/contralto is tricky, and it’s not just about vocal range. It’s easy to be misclassified—for example, some people are told they’re mezzo because they can’t hit high notes, but that’s often due to a lack of technique. After proper voice lessons, they might discover they’re actually sopranos. Similarly, dramatic sopranos are sometimes mistaken for contraltos.
However! It’s natural to be curious about your voice type, and that’s okay! The key is not to label yourself too quickly or get stuck thinking “omg, I’m a soprano, and I can’t sing this, this and this”. Singing should be fun, and it’s hard to enjoy it if you’re constantly focus on what you can’t do. If a song is too low or too high, just change the key and have fun!
Sorry for the long intro, lol, but I felt it was important to mention this.
Now, as I said, finding your true vocal range can be hard if you’re untrained, but you can always give it a try! Start by finding your chest voice range—this is a register we speak in. Don’t think of it as singing, think of it as speaking. Try singing something low (even something as simple as Happy Birthday) and see how low you can comfortably go.
Next, let’s check your head voice. This register is tricky because we don’t use it in daily life, so here’s a fun exercise: pretend you’re… a vacuum cleaner! (I know it sounds strange, but it works, and it’s also great for developing a head voice). Sing a melody on the “OO” vowel. If your voice breaks, you might be in your middle range, and this is normal (many untrained or beginner singers describe the middle range as a hole in their voice). Keep going higher to see if you can find your highest comfortable note.
You have to stay totally relaxed during this! Tension won’t help. If you crack, that’s okay! You won’t hurt yourself!
Also, it’s normal if you can’t recognise the note you’re singing by ear! A good tip is to download a guitar tuner app—it will show you exactly what note you’re singing.
This method will help you discover your current range. If you can reach a high C or B, you’re probably a soprano. If you can’t sing higher than F5 but you can comfortably sing as low as E3, you might be a contralto. If you’re somewhere in between, you could be a mezzo. Also, consider the timbre of your speaking voice—light and high sopranos tend to speak in a higher pitch, while lower voices and dramatic sopranos often have a deeper speaking voice.
I hope that helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Musical theatre eah headcanons because my post about the musical in fairy’s got talent got some attention.
Part 1 soprano’s
Apple: this is canon (and obvious) “…Apple’s high, pure soprano…” (the story book of legends by Shannon hale chapter 17). She’s probably classically trained or something. Also the fact that she wakes Raven up in the morning with her singing… she is that obnoxious soprano (from the obnoxious soprano)
Cupid: Cupid would be a whisperer. She would sing so quietly. Her falsetto would be inaudible but I think that Justine would probably help her become more confident in her singing.
Lizzie: more of a belter but she also has a very clear and strong falsetto. Also in my head Lizzie is the #1 theatre kid. Like in wonderland she would just burst into song and any given time and that was normal. She also probably annoys the shit out of duchess with her karaoke all the time.
Meeshell: I mean this one’s pretty obvious. Do I just imagine her to sound like Jodie Benson… yes. Also can we talk about how in her webisode her singing was horrible? Idk if that was some sort of joke that went over my head but yikes…
Farrah: she would have a pretty decent range. I think that she would be more on the acting/dancing side rather than singing. I think that she wouldn’t have any tone. Her singing would be like talking.
Kitty: I think that she would be a pretty good singer. More in the mezzo range but still can sing soprano. She just wouldn’t take it seriously. But she does take muse-ic class canonically.
Holly: I don’t she would be a bad singer she just wouldn’t hold a candle to Lizzie or Apple. She would have a pretty strong voice but she would have difficulty singing on key.
Nina: I think that she would have a unique voice. Her voice is probably better suited for solo singing than choirs but she still does good for group harmonies.
Bunny: ngl I was contemplating putting her in the next part as an alto and saying she just speaks high in her register but then there’d be way too many altos. Alto or soprano she would be a very shy singer. Lizzie would have convinced her to try out (or ordered her).
For those who don’t know soprano is a voice type. It’s the highest voice type.

I was trying to fancast an Arcane muscial with @lullabyes22-blog and I ended up realizing that one of the things that makes David Tennant such a perfect fit for Silco is that they both have that thing where their voices are simultaneously deep and thin? You kind of get the sense that Silco was supposed to be a tenor whose voice got fucked up real bad by smoking and stuff, while David still has all his high notes he just gained an extra octave on the bottom once he hit middle age

Those "just found my voice type!" ads annoy the hell out of me because girlie that is not a vocal range problem, it's a breath support problem. Also you're lying down.

My vocal range goes from around C3 to around D5
I’m not counting those once in a blue moon notes like G5 or A2.

Ever listen to your pets’ voices and try to sort them into vocal sections? Like:
Cat: *Meows*
Me: Ah, yes, she would be a sweet, youthful-sounding mezzo or soprano, with a voice that resembles the pre-2000s Disney Princesses’.
Other cat: *Meows*
Me: And he would be a contemporary tenor that you’d find in 2010s musicals and onward.
Dog: *Barks*
Me: And that one’s a bass.
