A thought about the Music Process®

Prophet V Synthesizer, one of my favourite synthesizers ever. Ironically, this isn't about synthesizers, though. You'll see
I'm not actually sure what the most in depth way of saying any of this is. So I'd just like to consider it from my limited lexicon (pun intended, for my vintage reverb fans out there).
But the ways i think of it are like this:
Writing / Composition — The act of actually conceptualizing the music, composing it melodically, establishing parts for instruments, writing lyrics, etc.
Recording — Capturing any live performances such as guitars, vocals, drums, etc.
Sound Design — Depending on the genre, this may not be a thing. But for me, it's designing instruments from scratch, curating interesting instruments (possibly paired with some effect chains that sound cool), experimenting with sounds and musical phrases independently of a song's context, etc.
Production — Kind of a blend of the first three, but a sort of higher level of polish is involved and often involves taking each smaller idea and concept to a interesting and pristine level. Usually includes stuff like instrumentation as well.
Arranging — Deciding where all the elements go, when they come in, how they make their exit, etc.
Mixing — Using tools like EQ's, compressors, saturation, and other tools to make individual tracks/instruments/sounds work together in the context of a full song and establishing a distinct sonic style for the instruments and track as a whole.
Mastering — Taking a full mix of a song and doing similar things like with Mixing, except instead of applying these ideas to individual tracks, you're applying them to the song as a whole. Often this process involves trying to reach a target loudness for the song as well as make it as compatible as possible with other platforms, devices, and listening situations.
A lot of people think of these things as separate. In a lot of cases they are.
However. That is not how I do anything, actually. Most of these things, aside from mastering, sort of blend together for me. The writing process may yield sound design ideas, or vice versa. And I always find myself mixing while arranging and writing. And this sort of blending together of the parts of the "music process®" is common for independent musicians these days.
Traditionally, different roles are taken on by different people. Even one role can be taken up by multiple people; most bands do various parts of the writing and composition, while other engineers help with recording, production, mixing, mastering, etc.
Most independent musicians that find themselves taking on many or all of these roles usually admit to not enjoying most of the utilitarian, engineering aspects, and prefer to emphasize their passion for the abstractly creative part of the process (namely writing, recording, and sound design.)
I do every single aspect of my music, and I like it that way. I know that if something sucks, it's all on me and nobody else takes the fall. But if something is good... Well, that's all me too. And I'm super proud of that. But where a lot of people in my sort of position usually loathe half of the entire process, I shall confess—
—I really really really REALLY love the engineering part of everything. I love problem solving with my equipment and learning new things about it. I love trying to figure out how to make new musical ideas work cohesively with things. It's even harder for me than a lot of other people because I do as many genres as I can get my disgusting little hooves on. Engineering ideas and concepts shift depending on the genre, and so everytime I try something new, I also have to learn how to produce, arrange, mix, and master for it. AND I FUCKING LOVE IT.
Of all these things, though, the thing I really really adore the most is mixing. I usually don't do it as its own process; mixing usually is a part of the song creation process for me. It's like another aspect of sound design honestly. But I love fixing things in sound that doesn't work as it should properly. I love trying to figure out how to get all the tracks to fit together and feel coherent. AND I LOVE. THE TOOLS.
This is why I even wanted to discuss any of this. I love exploring and learning EQs and compressors and all sorts of things. I honestly want to talk more about it and use this space as a way to just ramble and maybe share my love for this stuff with people who have no idea what it is or no idea why to care or even find themselves intimidated at the thought of the engineering process.
I have a hyperfixation with audio dynamic compressors. I always warn people that if somehow the conversation we're having is steering towards engineering, specifically compressors, that they have to be super careful or else I won't shut the fuck up. I love them so much.
They all have so much personality and always have their own sound. That's the point.

HOW CAN YOU LOOK AT THESE AND NOT HAVE YOUR CURIOSITY PIQUED?? AUGH. I love the VU's (the meters with the needles) so much and they often are what define a compressor's visual vibe to me.

If you think about these tools like art tools, right. Different styles and brands of pens, pencils, markers, pastels, charcoals, clays, etc, all deal with the same basic concept and all attempt to fulfill a particular aspect of the process. But you also know that the differences between styles and brands are often huge. Despite all attempting to do the same thing, you know which ones will get you closest to the ideas in your head fastest depending on what the idea and situation is. Audio engineering tools are like that too, especially compressors.
Before computers, these were exclusively analog. Each compressor designed was uniquely flawed in it's own way. Once computers dominated the music making process, compressors went digital. For a while, people were excited to finally make digital compressors that were mathematically perfect. But we actually discovered that it killed the life of a lot of music as a result. The imperfections of analog compressors (and other audio equipment) is what made them unique.
Even if each one does the same thing, they all actually feel very different. And I just get so excited about it!
If you've come this far and actually don't know what an audio dynamics compressor is, that is impressive you stayed with me this long. A compressor in music is basically a device that allows you to manipulate the dynamic range of audio. That is a long winded way of saying you can take a sound and make the quieter parts louder, and the louder parts quieter. Or. You could do the inverse (called expansion). That, itself, is also a long winded way of saying: You can use compressors to make sounds punchier, or smoother, or more controlled, or more present, or more exciting, or beefier, or other descriptors in that vein. You can take a weak sounding kick drum and give it some actual punch and presence. You can take a vocal recording and squish it so that it's really up front and full of energy, helping it to rise above the other instruments without just turning the volume up.
Compressors are so important, that their use and application has — very early on — defined styles of music.
Here's an example where I create different dynamic feels for a drum track using Pulsar's 1178 VST Plugin. I won't describe how it sounds to me, I'm sure you can think in your own way about how the compressor is changing the sound!

UK technology and electrical retailer, Currys, is leveraging Salesforce solutions to support its omnichannel transformation plans. Co-op has extended its trial of age estimation technology into five of its stores in partnership with Diebold Nixdorf and Yoti. The pilot – which is not facial recognition and does not retain or store images – now sees Co-op testing out Vynamic Smart Vision I Age Verification, a new Diebold Nixdorf solution that uses Yoti’s age estimation technology, in five of its Manchester stores, including one located within its Customer Support Centre where it first tested the tech last November. UK big four supermarket Asda is set to deploy Salesforce technology as it looks to give “a 360-degree view of its customers, providing personalised and tailored experiences that will revolutionise the consumer grocery experience”. Leveraging Salesforce’s full retail suite, including Commerce Cloud, Service Cloud, and Marketing Cloud, Asda says it will create a cloud first environment that “gives its 18 million customers one connected and consistent experience across every channel and device, no matter where or how they choose to interact with the brand”.      The initiative comes as the business separates from Walmart.  J.B. Hunt Transport Services and Waymo report that the latest development in their collaboration on autonomous trucking technology will include a pilot delivering goods for the former’s customer Wayfair. This will span six plus weeks during July and August and take place along the I-45 corridor between Houston and Dallas, the location of J.B. Hunt and Waymo’s original pilot nearly one year ago. It will be the first in-depth transportation of home furnishings retail freight between J.B. Hunt and Waymo Via (the company’s autonomous Class 8 trucking unit powered by the Waymo Driver technology). 3D Cloud by Marxent is partnering with Kingfisher to roll-out new 3D visualisation, planning, and design tech across a number of its banners. Schnellere Autos dank Turbo-Power, eine neue Marke im Kreis der Wettbewerber, so viele neue Fahrer wie lange nicht mehr sowie ein Kundenteam – die DTM 2019 wartet mit einigen Neuerungen auf. Bevor die Saison in der kommenden Woche am Hockenheimring startet (3.–5. Mai), stellen wir die wichtigsten Neuerungen in den Bereichen Sport, Technik und Veranstaltung kurz vor.
Fünf Rookies: Gleich fünf Fahrer geben in dieser Saison ihr DTM-Debüt, darunter sogar zwei talentierte Südafrikaner: Sheldon van der Linde (BMW) und Jonathan Aberdein (WRT Team Audi Sport). Bei Neuling R-Motorsport/Aston Martin sind zwei der vier nominierten Fahrer Neulinge: Ferdinand von Habsburg aus Österreich und der Brite Jake Dennis. Ein klangvoller Name bereichert die DTM: Pietro Fittipaldi aus Brasilien, Enkel des zweimaligen Formel-1-Weltmeisters Emerson Fittipaldi. Jüngster der fünf Rookies ist der 19-jährige van der Linde, gefolgt von Aberdein (21), von Habsburg (21), Fittipaldi (22) und Dennis (23).
Aston Martin: Die Luxus-Sportwagen-Marke, Dienstwagen-Lieferant von James Bond, tritt erstmals in der DTM auf. Gesteuert wird das Projekt aus der Schweiz: R-Motorsport startet unter der exklusiven Lizenz von Aston Martin mit dem Aston Martin Vantage DTM. Das Projekt von R-Motorsport wird von der Vynamic GmbH verantwortet und operativ geleitet. Dieses Joint Venture von der R-Motorsport-Muttergesellschaft AF Racing AG und der HWA AG baut die DTM-Fahrzeuge. Das Team R-Motorsport setzt vier Autos ein. Team Principal ist Dr. Florian Kamelger.
Kundenteam WRT: Die Strategie der DTM-Dachorganisation ITR sieht vor, dass neben den Werksmannschaften auch Kundenteams in der Rennserie antreten sollen. Das belgische Team WRT macht den Anfang und setzt zwei Audi RS 5 DTM für Fittipaldi und Aberdein ein – ein echtes Juniorteam. Die professionelle WRT-Mannschaft von Ex-Rennfahrer Vincent Vosse (BEL) ist eine seit Jahren etablierte Größe im internationalen Motorsport. WRT hat unter anderem bereits den 24-Stunden-Klassiker von Spa-Francorchamps gewonnen.
Motor: Die signifikanteste Neuerung an den Renntourenwagen ist der Motor. Die neuen, effizienten Vierzylinder-Turboaggregate mit zwei Litern Hubraum leisten rund 610 PS und 650 Nm Drehmoment. Das zulässige Leergewicht der Autos wurde auf 986 Kilogramm abgesenkt. Nie war das Leistungsgewicht (1,6 kg/PS) eines DTM-Autos geringer – folgerichtig präsentiert sich in dieser Saison die schnellste DTM aller Zeiten.
Push-to-pass: Per Knopfdruck am Lenkrad kann der Fahrer die Leistung kurzzeitig um ca. 30 PS erhöhen. Der Kraftstoff-Massenstrom-Restriktor gibt dann für jeweils fünf Sekunden mehr Kraftstoff (Aral Ultimate 102) frei, was dem Fahrer das Überholen erleichtern soll. Die Benutzung von Push-to-pass ist auf zwölf Aktivierungen pro Rennen begrenzt. In den letzten fünf Runden oder sieben Rennminuten darf das System unabhängig vom Abstand zum Vordermann (ansonsten: maximal drei Sekunden) eingesetzt werden. Es kann, muss aber nicht in Verbindung mit dem bekannten DRS (siehe unten) verwendet werden. Im Qualifying ist die Benutzung von Push-to-pass untersagt.
Heckflügel und DRS: Der Heckflügel der DTM-Autos des Jahrgangs 2019 ist zwar 520 mm breiter als der Vorgänger, verfügt allerdings nur noch über ein Element. In Verbindung mit dem geänderten, nunmehr flacheren Heckdiffusor verringert sich der aerodynamische Abtrieb der Autos. Das DRS („Drag Reduction System“) ist nicht neu. Ein pneumatischer Klappmechanismus des Flügels wird auf Knopfdruck vom Fahrer aktiviert. Die gewünschte Kettenreaktion: Verringerung des Luftwiderstands, Erhöhung des Topspeeds, Verbesserung der Überholmöglichkeit. Eine Neuerung gibt es allerdings beim Modus: Während nach wie vor das DRS nur verwendet werden darf, wenn der Abstand zum Vordermann maximal drei Sekunden beträgt, können die Fahrer ab dieser Saison – außer dem Führenden – in den letzten fünf Runden DRS unabhängig vom Abstand zum Vordermann einsetzen. Im Rennen darf jeder Fahrer das DRS in maximal zwölf Runden aktivieren.
Neue Frontpartie: Aufgrund der neuen Zwei-Liter-Turbomotoren und ihrer Ladeluftkühlung wird die Luftführung am Vorderwagen grundlegend verändert. Dort, wo bisher auf der zentral platzierten Kennzeichenfläche das Logo von Serienpartner Deutsche Post angebracht war, ist nun eine größere Öffnung für die Kühlung. In der Motorhaube sind die Kühlauslässe signifikant größer als noch 2018. Zudem verringerte sich an der Front der Überhang des Frontsplitters um 90 Millimeter.
Startprozedur für den Fahrer: Ab 2019 fällt eine Starthilfe weg. Bisher konnten die Fahrer ihre DTM-Autos während der letzten Sekunden vor dem Start „vorspannen“, das heißt: eine elektronische Arretierung des Bremsventils via Schalter am Lenkrad sowie optische Hilfen (Dioden), die den optimalen Schleifpunkt der Kupplung anzeigten, sorgten für einen nahezu perfekten Start. 2019 kommt es auch beim Start stärker auf die Fähigkeiten der Fahrer an. Eine kurze Reaktionszeit wird ebenso belohnt wie der geübte Umgang mit der Kupplung.
Kamera statt Innenspiegel: Die Kombination aus Sicherheitskäfig und Einheitsmonocoque, die den DTM-Fahrer umgibt, erhält einen neu entwickelten Knieschutz sowie eine Feuerschutzwand zwischen Getriebeeinheit und Cockpit. Die Sicht nach hinten durch einen herkömmlichen Innenspiegel ist aufgrund der Schottwand nicht mehr möglich. Stattdessen kommt eine Heckkamera zum Einsatz. Das rückwärtige Bild kann der Fahrer auf einem Bildschirm sehen, der sich dort befindet, wo sonst der Innenspiegel hängt.
Rennformat: Während 2018 noch die Renndauer auf 55 Minuten plus eine Runde angesetzt war, wird nun pro Rennstrecke jeweils eine feste Rundenzahl angesetzt, der eine Renndauer von 58 Minuten als Orientierung zu Grunde liegt. Neu ist auch die Möglichkeit der „Nachspielzeit“: Nach einer Safety-Car-Phase kann der Rennleiter das Rennen um bis zu drei Runden verlängern. Die maximale Renndauer ist allerdings auf 70 Minuten begrenzt.
Markenwertung: Für die Wertung zur Markenmeisterschaft werden 2019 die erzielten Punkte der jeweils vier bestplatzierten Fahrer eines Herstellers aus den Qualifyings und den Wertungsläufen addiert.
Zwei neue Rennstrecken – eine davon altbekannt: Der DTM-Kalender weist gegenüber 2018 zwei neue Rennstrecken auf: Zolder und Assen. Das belgische Zolder, 1984 Austragungsort des ersten Rennens der DTM-Historie, gilt als Geburtsstätte der DTM und zählte in den 80er- und 90er- Jahren zum Inventar der DTM. Sein DTM-Debüt gibt Assen in den Niederlanden. Der „TT Circuit“ ist seit Jahren fester Bestandteil des MotoGP-Kalenders und stellt mit vielen schnellen und mittelschnelle Kurven eine echte Herausforderung dar.
Gemeinsames Rennwochenende mit SUPER GT in Fuji: Bereits beim Saisonfinale in Hockenheim werden SUPER-GT-Fahrzeuge, die ebenfalls auf dem gemeinsamen „CLASS 1“-Reglement basieren, außerhalb der Wertung im DTM-Rennen teilnehmen. Im November kommt es dann nach Saisonabschluss zu einer Zugabe: Auf dem Fuji Speedway tragen DTM und SUPER GT ein gemeinsames Non-Championship-Event aus.
Rahmenprogramm: Die DTM bietet 2019 die Bühne für viele weitere attraktive Rennserien. An den ersten sechs Rennwochenenden der Saison trägt die neue W Series, in der ausschließlich junge Frauen antreten und gefördert werden, ihre Rennen aus. Ebenfalls sechs Mal bei der DTM dabei: Die beliebten Porsche Markenpokale aus Deutschland, Benelux und Frankreich. Die aus dem vergangenen Jahr bereits bekannten Tourenwagen Classics sind 2019 bei fünf DTM-Veranstaltungen zu Gast.
Freier Zugang zum Fahrerlager: Der Zugang zum Fahrerlager ist erstmals in allen Ticketkategorien im Eintrittspreis inklusive (solange der Vorrat reicht). Fans erwartet ein wahres Festival: Im Fan-Village laden Food-Trucks und ein buntes Unterhaltungsprogramm zum Verweilen ein, bei Pit-View und Pit-Walk lassen sich die DTM-Teams bei der Arbeit aus nächster Nähe über die Schulter schauen.
Ein Top-DJ bei jeder Veranstaltung: Die DTM-Dachorganisation ITR GmbH erweitert das Unterhaltungsprogramm an den Rennwochenenden. Nachdem 2018 internationale Top-stars und DJs bei ausgewählten Veranstaltungen im DTM-Rahmenprogramm auftraten, soll es in dieser Saison an jedem Rennwochenende ein Konzert im Fan-Village im Fahrerlager geben. Der Zutritt ist für alle Ticketinhaber frei.

Aston Martin Vantage V12 Zagato ganha versão Speedster
Celebrando 100 anos, o construtor de carrocerias Zagato continua exercendo fascínio em muitos consumidores ricos pelo mundo. Atualmente em parceria com a inglesa Aston Martin, a empresa italiana lançou em conjunto o Vantage V12 Zagato no ano de 2011, vendendo então 150 exemplares de forma quase imediata.
Inspirado no Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato dos anos 60, o atual Vantage V12 Zagato ganha uma atraente variante conversível, chamada simplesmente de Speedster. O termo é utilizado também pela Porsche, que recentemente relançou o 911 Speedster para fechar a geração anterior 991.
Exclusivo e caro, o Aston Martin Vantage V12 Zagato Speedster deverá valer ainda mais nos próximos anos, já que apenas 38 exemplares serão construídos. Hoje, um Vantage V12 Coupé da Zagato vale US$ 1 milhão como usado, mais que o dobro do preço de 2011. Então, é de se esperar que este roadster valorize ainda mais nos próximos anos.
O Aston Martin Vantage V12 Zagato Speedster será feito pela AF Racing na Suíça, através da sua controlada Vynamic GmbH e cria assim a submarca R-Reforged. Será a primeira vez que essa empresa trabalhará com a Zagato Milano, embora faça parte do time que desenvolveu o hiperesportivo Aston Martin AM-RB 001 “Valkyrie”.
O conversível é inspirado no Vanquish Zagato Speedster, tendo motor V12 5.9, mas ainda não se sabe se com os mesmos 510 cavalos e 57,9 kgfm declarados em 2011. Com 4,572 m de comprimento, 2,000 m de largura, 1,300 m de altura e 2,642 m de entre eixos, o cupê tinha chassi e carroceria de alumínio, mas com gaiola de proteção em aço.
O Dr. Andrea Zagato, diz: “Os gêmeos Aston Martin V12 Zagato Heritage da R-Reforged são uma homenagem excepcional à nossa própria herança. Eles são os mais belos Zagatos projetados retro-future (neo-clássicos) para serem produzidos”. Vendidos através da nova submarca, os bólidos – o cupê também voltará a ser produzido – adotarão uma designação diferente: Aston Martin Vantage V12 Zagato Heritage Twins by R-Reforged Coupé ou Speedster.

2 FTSE 250 growth shares that could make you rich
After I last recommended JD Sports Fashion (LSE: JD) in March, the company’s share price went gone on to reach new all-time highs and deliver an astonishing 13-fold increase in just five years. But in more recent months, the shares have suffered a remarkable turn of fortune, shedding more than a fifth of their value since May. With many popular high street retailers currently in a slump, could this be the perfect time to sell up?
Rapid expansion
The Lancashire-based retailer and distributor of branded sportswear and fashionwear, today reported another record result for the half year. Pre-tax profits soared by a further 33% to £102.7m, compared to the £77.4m posted for the first six months of 2016/17. Total group revenue came in at £1.4bn, a 41% improvement on the £971m achieved a year earlier. The news sent the shares soaring 9% higher by late afternoon.
The FTSE 250 group now boasts more than 1,200 stores worldwide and still continues to expand rapidly. During the 26-week period to July there was a net increase of 40 JD stores, of which 12 were in the UK and Ireland, with a further 23 in mainland Europe. A similar number of net new stores is expected across mainland Europe in the second half. Further afield, the group opened its first stores in Australia and added two more in Malaysia.
Bucking the trend
The business’s robust performance of late seems to be bucking the trend among high street retailers, and I have no reason to believe this won’t continue. So far in the second half, trading has continued at similar levels to the first six months, and the group now expects year-end sales figures to be towards the upper end of market expectations, currently in the range £268m-£290m.
I see the recent share price slump as an opportunity to buy at a very opportune moment, with the shares now trading at a very reasonable 15 times earnings, falling to 14 times next year.
Partner of choice
Another London-listed mid-cap firm that I believe has excellent growth potential is UDG Healthcare (LSE: UDG). Over the years, the Dublin-based healthcare services provider has grown to become a leading partner of choice for the global healthcare industry, delivering commercial, clinical, communications, and packaging services wordwide.
The group continues to expand its footprint having committed no less than $200m since the start of the financial year to the acquisitions of STEM, Sellxpert, Vynamic, Cambridge BioMarketing and a US packaging facility. A strong balance sheet should leave it well positioned to continue with this acquisition strategy and deliver further growth.
UDG’s shares have performed well since I last recommended them(also in March), gaining around 20%. But even at a lofty 31 times earnings I believe they still represent good value given the prospects for further long-term growth.
